Jon: Thank you~ I've drawn half a page of fast cubes, but haven't scanned it in yet. Will do when I've drawn some more!
Josh: Thankye, deary~ In my next unit I can direct my work moreso towards concept design, wheee!
Franilington: Haha I used to do that in college if I could, but with the project briefs I had for the last unit I couldn't really do that. Anyhoooo, here be the goodies...

NARRATIVE
"Once Bitten, Twice Shy" by Aesop
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/obts1.jpg
A house was overrun with mice. A cat which discovered this went there and caught and ate them one by one.
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/obts2.jpg
These continual losses scared the survivors into their holes, where the cat could no longer get at them. So he decided that he must entice them out somehow.
He climbed up the wall, hung himself on a peg, and shammed dead...
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/obts3.jpg
But one of the mice, peeping out and seeing him, said:
'It's no use, my friend; I'll keep out of your way, even if you do turn yourself into a sack.'
FASHION:
Only showing some sketches...wasn't fussed on the final pieces.

REPORTAGE:
Went to Covent Garden to do some sketches/research/stock up on art supplies
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/r_sb.jpg
Here’s the sketchbook I made using paper ripped out of a Fabriano sketchbook that was given to me, amongst other materials, for this course.

Think that’s it from the stuff I actually scanned before handing it all in. Would’ve gotten it back today but they wanted to make copies or something.
Anyhoo, cheers for stopping by and if you have any suggestions/critique/free food, hit meh! :D

Those spheres look nice! I also like the pose of the girl but I think she has some anatomy errors, especially in the shoulder/neck area. Try to search for a reference with a similar pose and go from there :) And I wouldn't use pure black in the shadow areas, but this is just a wip and you probably knew that :)

Hey Quicksilver! Always good to see a fellow AIB member around. Brush pen FTW indeed! I really like your use of it where the strokes goes from a dry look to a wet stroke. The cat and mouse pieces has some nice complimentary colours. I think on the first image you could define the cat's form better. Its mostly the edges thats the problem it seems to be on the same plane as the other parts of the cat. If you could paint some of the edges so that it has the illusion of going further away (maybe soften the edges and have the values change towards the edges like the spheres) I think itll look a lot better.
Looking forward in seeing more! What course are u on btw? I might drop by sometime. See ya!

"some very naomi brush pen sketches which look nice" - yay~ :3 Thankoo. Erm, yeah, I had to pose for the second one which is probably why it looks like me, though I did try to void that ^_^;
Bones Weep Tedium: Cheers~
Anthriel/Juhani: Thank you~ Will have a play around with the shoulder area, though I think I might just need to lift her left (our right) shoulder up a bit.
Just calibrated my screen and nooooow I can see what you mean about the shading - will fix that. Yay for better colours!
Diphalia: Thanks!
Tom: Chaaars, was nice catching up a bit earlier :)
Prophet: Thanks :) Aye, I'm in AIB too - I'm in my first year of Illustration, but have been offered to go up a year....dunno if I will or not yet though. Haven't you lurked around the UK thread from time to time? Why haven't you come to a meet??! :P
Bendragon: Heya, cheers for the crit. Makes sense....will think about those things more in future work (I prefer to leave old pieces be instead of re-working them. I'm studying Illustration in the room opposite the Arts Bar?

Hey! Very nice observational work. As usual, your penwork is very strong. It would be great to get your imaginary stuff towards the level of confidence and solidity u show in your referanced work. A method I find helpful in this area is to do some master study (of who ever u want to gravitate towards) and then try and reproduce some work in that style (so that it looks like the artist your studying actually drew the pictures you just produced!) in observational work... then from your imagination! Personally I find this technique very helpful, though its quite a tough challenge.
Annnnnnnnnddddd... That skull is fantastic! The values helps the drawing read. The lines follows the contors. Very solid study! Would absolutely love to see more drawings at that level!!!!

Bendragon: Thanks~ Yeah, studies are easy to do 'cause I just draw what I see, but I need to up my understanding on everything to get my imaginative work on par :S Well, that's what my time in uni is for anyway! Haha.
Ah, good advice - I'll try it out :) Was actually thinking about doing Master study earlier, but painted this instead [scroll down].

hi Gnomey, i think her left eye ( our right) is still placed a little high,so i think the cheek at that part is a little wide because of that, i also think that maybe her eyes could do with a little more suggestion of form. The septum looks better like that i think, but i think it could possibly need to join a bit smoother to the top lip? im not sure. Hope that Helps Gnomey, looks like it will be a nice piecem :)

Nice work again! I think in the middle piece the character grows more narrow as you get to the bottom. Not sure if this is intentional or not. You could probably add some curve to the legs like you did with the arms.

10.) Speedpaint of a mug. Fascinating stuff...

Hey! Observational studies are looking good. Some confident linework especially in the pen and brushpens! Some of the straight lines in your hatching can flatten parts of your drawing - like on the right side of the observational drawing of your sketchbook. My tutor pointed this out on my work recently so Im quite conscious about it recently haha! Varying the line weight and drawing round the contours will solve this methinks.
The evil genie sketch has a more solid construction than your other imaginary work. What ever you trying worked there :) Also liking the still life! Good form and nice hard edges. Will there be more? Looks like a good exercise.
Yay for life drawings! Your quick ones seem to have better constructions than the longer ones. Though its probably cause you switched to a smaller paper size. For the longer poses I think you should approach it the same way as you do for the shorter poses and then refine that short pose drawing with the rest of the time. Gud gud gud!
Quicksilver
January 31st, 2008, 03:03 PM
Thanks, Ben!! :D Yeah, I keep forgetting about shading in the direction of the form until I block it all in with flat lines. Guess I should start thinking before drawing, eh?
No idea what I was going for with the Genie sketch - did it in about 4-3 minutes - but I'm glad it turned out okay :) Now to find out how to do that sorta thing consciously lol
Yah, studies are defo useful, and I admit I don't do anywhere near enough of them. Eep...
Life drawing was great!! Defo need to bring my own paper next time - A5 is painfully constrictive.
Thanks so much for always giving helpful crits and advice, mate. I really appreciate it :)

Hey Quicksilver,
Thanks for dropping by my sb. I think your traditional work is looking great. pretty good loose strokes and I really like those brush pen pieces. In terms of digital stuff just work on your lighting more. I think working in greyscale will really help you. Take a look at that Glen Angus piece you did. You got the values down real good there.
Hey, I really dig those photos and the second photo on the top right.
Keep it coming! You got awesome stuff happening in this sketchbook.
Quicksilver
February 5th, 2008, 06:32 PM
Trashy: Thank you! Yeah, you're right - should defo work in greyscale more, or maybe purely work in grayscale (digitally) until I get my head round values and the like. Dunno why they're so hard for me to sink in :/
Many thanks for the compliments :)

Hey hey! Someones good with the camera :)!
Just to add to the greyscale talk - something I find useful (for digital anyway) is to make a desaturation layer that sits on top of everything else and you can use that to check your value. I think you make it by going into
layers> New Adjestment Layer> Hue/Saturation. Then drag the saturation slider down.
Yup yup, these life drawings are looking better! Liking the line quality. What I really like in your quick poses is that theres some drawing inside the figure as well. I think you can bring that into the longer ones too.
And Happy New Year (for tomorrow)!:mittenbop:

Heya Naomi- really like your evil genie sketch- a brush pen seems to be what you feel most comfortable with :)
Also like the photos, in particular the first one- its a lot more interesting composition i think.
I also like the body worlds sketches- the lines are a lot looser which looks cool ( im a bit of a fan of pen hehe)
Life drawing is looking cool, but i would say maybe watch the faces in some of them

Hey!
As I was saying earlier on MSN, try spending the whole long pose doing the line drawing and getting that as good as possible. I think it's more important to spend the time getting good at that one aspect - which underpins everything else - than trying to achieve a finished drawing which you'll never do in half an hour. Or if you do, it'll be seriously compromised.
Oh yeah, and work on the abstract shape of things before considering the actual anatomy. Because the abstract shape of the entire form contains all the proportions. Don't bother with all that 'eight heads' shit, it doesn't really work.
Anyway, nice one and keep at it. Sucks to hear they don't have any life drawing in your course though - universities suck huh?

Ach! Im no good with words, hope you dont mind me posting an image about it here. Once you followed those steps, you should get a new layer that you could turn on and off to check the values. Something I use a lot, maybe helpful.
The meet really must have inspired you, these recent stuff are looking great! Loving the train sketches. I think your hatching and shading works best when they are following one direction like on the drawing on the left page it really works well. The page opposite has a lot of lines going against each other. Just need to be a lil bit more controlling and selective with them :)
Really Really liking the life drawings! I remeber being impressed during class! Keep it up.
The latest update shows better control of the hatching/ shading. Maybe push some of the values so wee can really tell where the light is coming from. Remember the spheres :)

hey there, u go to AIB, that where i wanna go wen i finsh my course next year.
you life drawings are good but i think you should work on the gestures of you lines, vary line weight. and on your tonal stuff remember to contrast, get the absolute black from your pencil and use the absolute white of your paper.
really nice SB. :)

Spheres, spheres, spheres.....I don't understand how something so simple still manages to escape my mind!!

Alice_: 'allo 'allo! Was nice meeting you in the Manchester meeteroo~ Er nope, don't think I passed my SB around, haha, but yours is cool!

The wip is looking very promising. Could be on to something there.
Your quick poses in life drawing still has better constructions than your longer ones. Looking at the quicker ones, I can see them looking great if they were rendered out more in the longer poses. Take the liveliness from the quick poses into the long ones and then render them out :) The quick studies has wonderful overlapping lines that I really would like to see everywhere else.
Maybe block out the whole figure quickly and draw the whole figure at once before going into refining it. So if youre working on one shoulder, jump to the other one and keep working up all over the figure at once. It'll help you keep an eye on the whole figure.
Cheers for the help the other day! Im actually looking forward to building the site!

Hiya, some very nice stuff in here! Your sketches and studies in pen and pencil are excellent!
I think your digi paintings are lacking some subtle touches of different colors in skintone, which makes 'em look very monochrome. Try some red-ish touches in the nose, cheeks and ears area. Some blue, green, grey-ish shadows. Maybe exagerate it a bit. Also some stronger highlights might work as well.
Just my 2 cents :)

Really enjoyed myself looking through this SB, naomi! I think even in the last few pages you've come on loads, and the life studies are definitely showing more signs of confidence, the pencil work on that last toned one is looking great! I think it was bridgman who tried to capture the form of the muscles in as few lines as possible... perhaps doing a few studies from one of his books would give you some insight into the shading thing.
Love your affinity with jesters too, the thumbs on the last page of the purpley black lady were looking great, would love to see a fuller version of the character from one of them. Any crits I might have had, you seem to be on the way to solving yourself, so nothing much more to add other than keep up the great work!

Hey, wips looking good! Just a few things about values to point out but I thought it would make more sense if I did a paint-over. Hope you dont mind. Youve done a lot of good work on these. But its all looking a bit too gray atm. I adjusted the levels, bringing the the dark areas darker and a the light areas a bit more lighter (uping the contrast really). I think your shadows can go more darker. These dark bits also helps to make the highlights even lighter in comparison. And because the plane is metalic, there should be more contrasts on it. The whole world works in contrasts :) It makes everything beautiful! So for example, if you know youre going to have a foreground element painted in a light value you could paint the background at a dark value to make the foreground element jump out. Youve done it a bit on the plane, where the dark value of its right wing makes the main body jump out.
Theres some nice rim lighting there which helps to define the form. Ive also added a bit of rimlight on the blades just to define it more.
The figure is fine so not much to crit on that.
To summerize - try to push the values and contrast more. Then you can go in and add different reflective lightings to help define all the shapes more and make it even prettier :D
Hope that helps somewhat. Have fun!

the cast shadow beneath her chin feels a little too dark/defined. makes it look like her jaw's got a 90 degree corner instead of a subtle curve into her neckline. i can see you sort of shying away from doing her hands right, so maybe is best to get proper reference. the pose you've chosen really requires accurate foreshortening, or else her arms just look stubby. not sure that her weight is being held right in her hip.. like shes leaning too off balance. draw some bones in a multiply layer and see if it works out? great concepts nonetheless. the character youre working on is a very nice start, makes me think Eldar from Warhammer 40K (geek reference) looking forward to the polished piece! :D

Its the mitten-bob-girl-thing-thread! Now I finally know where :mittenbop: comes from :D. I think
I really like the lifedrawins on the other page, looks great! Although something still feels of in the construction at times.
The character design in your last post is very cool, I love it, maybe the values are a bit to close to each other.
In the gangus piece, I think the girl has a balance issue. It feels like all the weight of her pose is going to the right side. Still you did succeed in getting the feeling of the time period. Go Mittenbobgirlthing!:mittenbop:

Hi Naomi, I've been meaning to pop in and say hello for ages. The sketchbook is looking great. Of your recent stuff, some of those Manchester sketches are excellent, with real subtlety in the mark making. With the Gangus tribute, I agree with the comments from Bendragon and Stoph, but don't up the contrast too much. Something I'm seeing is a lot of high contrast imagery around these days, and it's 'shiny', not literally but it's impact for the eyes, whereas lower contrast work can be much more subtle. You can lose the emotion in shadow and light if you over contrast things, but maybe that's just me! Having said that, I look forward to seeing how you add colour to this if you intend to. The character above has a great face and pose. If I was to be hyper critical I'd twist her more toward the viewer for more dynamism. :)

Ben: Good point, will push the values a bit more, but not too much. Cheers for always taking time to crit my work :) much appreciated~
stoph: Thanks for the great crit! Was wondering what was up with her pose - didn't think about checking her balance...methinks I'll have to do a bit of posing to gain some ref. for this piece, haha.
Haven't played Warhammer tbh. That character was drawn after copious amount of hours spent on FFXII so I think that's where the fantasy influence came from.
ekler: Hehe, got a little update. Just some linework for now though until the uni load lightens a bit. Cheers for dropping by again!
Bones Weep Tedium, mysteryofalbesila: Thanks ^_^
Duq: Aaahahaha, yes, tis I! :mittenbop: Yeah, I'm still trying to get my head around values. Think I'm shying away from them a bit so most of my stuff ends up looking grey :/ Thanks for posting!
RandAlThor: Good idea, didn't think of making brushes out of those photos, hah. Duh. Thanks, good to hear I'm getting somewhere :)
Poshspice: Aly!! Nice to see you here, man. Yeah, I agree with the 'shininess' thing - I'm not much of a fan either. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Planning on keeping it in b&w so it stays within the Noir theme.
Good idea about moving the other character forward a bit, will see what I can do.

There seems to be a lack of a finalised dress design (but I'm sure that'll be decided at a later juncture). Nice rendition of lips and crown device. Guess this character will be eyeless due to overgrowth of fringer... :)

Some life drawing. Looking back I realised I somehow managed to get progressively crap during the class :/ Think I switch off during the longer poses, or restrict my movements a bit so I don't end up having masses of time left over at the end. Funny how you don't notice these things until afterwards, eh? ¬_¬'
Oo oo, and there were stages/platform things! So we can stand/sit a bit higher up and draw~ :D Also had a different model today, which was nice, and will have someone else next week. Yay for variety~
1.) Started with quite a few 30-second poses (not posted here), then moved on to 5mins
2.) 10mins
3.) 45mins

Wow, very nice stuff quicksilver. My only suggestions would have to be to 1: watch your proportions and 2: While sketching real things in black and white, try to come off of the black more gradually, or it looks kind of messy. Other than those, your stuff is great. I want to see more! :)

Juhani: Heeeeey man, how goes? Cheers :) I study Illustration in the Arts Institute at Bournemouth (http://www.aib.ac.uk/) (a.k.a. AIB). Though despite that, it's actually based in Poole, but it doesn't take long to get to Bournemouth town centre (which isn't that far from the beach) by bus. The main uni - which covers science/maths/English/Law etc. - is right next to the Arts Institute so students from both places can wander around and mingle.
Hope that helped! It's bloody gorgeous here!!

Good stuff in here. I did enjoy going over the pages of your SB and you did have come a long way since that. The more recent life drawings show a great improvement over your previous work. It's kinda interesting how your life drawings' body types differ from your imaginative drawings. Maybe that would help you in being able to draw very different types of characters.
Anyways, love how you draw the ladies and it's good seeing you working again on that Gangus tribute piece, would be great to see some colored version of it.

Hey naomi! Good life drawings again, keep on going!
I thought that you might study there- I've been looking at the school for some time now since I would like to study abroad. I've also been looking at the Stockholm atelier but I'm still very unsure about what I should do. Would you recommend the school to someone like me coming from a different country? My english is much better than the average in Finland and I can manage with it.

Hey steady improvements there! Very good to see :D
You did better than me that day. I felt out of practice, its been too long.
Anyway... crits! The ink pieces are very good! Lovely confident lines. Theres nice variations of thickness around the hair. I noticed some of the lines however seem to be unfinished. Theres a few gaps inbetween them sometimes. Someone crit this about me a year ago. Its on intercepting lines (i think thats what its called). Its when the lines dont really meet properly and is a bit broken. You avoided my mistake though where I had a lot of the lines meet up and end at a point. Erm... Maybe I could explain that better... Lemme know if you want me to elaborate.
Its also good to see your drawing venture more inside the figure. A while back a few of your life drawings inside the outline much. Imo these are looking better in terms of showing form. I remember drawing a foreshortend limb in life drawing before and finding that drawing the outline alone didnt indicate the angle of the limb. The way I tried to solve this problem was to draw another line inside the outline to try indicate this angle.
Tonal work is looking solid so far. Your handling the hair very well. Thats the worst part for me to draw!

hey nice anatomy studies lately! I admire you brush pen drawings alot! Would be nice to see some loose full colour digitals with strong light sources. Your line quality is excellent though, I was wondering how you overcome that or translate your strokes to digital when sketching on a tablet? It's a big stroke killer if you get me (i'm on A4 tablet at the moment).

K, so I've been looking at my past work in general and my depressing grades which I really can't complain about 'cause quite frankly, I've been pathetically lazy in the past 2-3 years BSing my way through. Soooooo in an attempt to kick myself up the but I'm actually making an effort to draw. As in, no more sloppy pencil marks just to fill up the pages, but actual studies and attempts to draw well.
....Wish me luck!! xD Here's some stuff I've been working on:
1&2.) T-shirt design for fun, to celebrate the end of the first year in uni with my classmates. The back is based on an older sketch you can find here (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=291203&stc=1&d=1201655760).
3.) The photos, samples and initial design of my present to lefran for her 19th birthday :)
4.) A self portrait for an oooold thread I made which was suddenly resurrected. Check it out if you like, it's a good exercise to do: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59601
5.) Think I was ill and couldn't sleep well when I drew this (about 5AM?). Not a 'proper' Bargue study - just a small morning exercise to give me something to do. No measurements made - all eyeballin' :)
6.) Still shots from the classic and amazing film The Dark Crystal. Tried to focus on composition and values, how they change and work etc. but then I got carried away and watched the rest of the film uninterrupted, haha.
7.) Studies of Kira and Jin from TDK, copied from a book based on its concept art by Brian Froud. Bloody amazing guy....
----Ref: "The World of the Dark Crystal", ISBN: 0-8109-4579-7----
8.) It's a Pod person! Or an 'Apopiapoipidiappididiapipob' (p.47)
9.) A character I liked the sound of from Terry Prattchet's "The Colour of Magic", but my drawing doesn't convey anything similar to what I had imagined...Also, when drawing this I was sitting on some grass outside in the sunshine, only to be interrupted by a really strange old man who fell out of a nearby tree and kept telling me he was a genius author and that I wouldn't amount to anything. Nice. o_O
10.) Studies of fish from when I was thinking about jumping in the DEEP end...
11.) Some character sketches, one of which I had a go of rendering without reference.
12.) Painted the cover of my SB for fun. Looks like something from a really girly novel lol.
13.) Photo of the above to put it into context.
14.) Some studies for an illustration I'm working on....
15.) A close-up of the tiger 'cause I'm quite happy with it :)
Thanks for looking, everyone, and cheers again to those who leave comments! All C&C welcome and I'll try and update this thing a little more frequently since I'm jobless this Summer :(
All the best,

The last update is very cool. Some very good pencil renderings in there, and the sketchbook cover is nice to look at. If there is anything to critique, a tiny thing will be getting rid of the outline of the teeth in the lion sketch. It doesn't go well with that tight realistic rendering style and sometimes those outlines can be a bit distracting, especially on teeth. Hope to see more updates from you, keep at it :D

Nice studies there. The animal drawings are particularly good :) Watchout for those hard outlines. Its good in some places but careful not to overdo them especially when the form curves round and travels away from the viewer, like the back of the mouse. The rabbit has good uses of the softer edges. This might be a useful read on the subject:
