View Full Version : Do you have art hanging in your home?

I was just thinking about this, because I just realized I had none at all - no prints, no posters, none of my own kindergarten sketches. (My first published work, "Bird Standing", was printed in my grammar school yearbook. I've been fighting to get the rights back ever since.) Do you guys decorate your pads with art at all? Even if its your own, or prints of old masters, movie posters, etc, I'm curious.

I have a crapload of posters in my room, everything from spiderman posters, to warped tour posters and stuff. My living room has a pastel portrait i did when i was 16. And then theres a couple random paintings and a painting of my great grandmother.
My old house has all the art. My uncle used to paint so he had everything all over the place.

I have alot of my own works hanging in my house (my wife tells me which ones i should keep) and last year i started trading with my friends, so i have a small, but growing collection of cool stuff from them and a few of the famous danish "big dudes" bought cheaper than normal from the galleries i work with. Looks pretty good.

My parents actually have an old painting of my dad up as well. Supposedly, its all mine when they're gone. Woohoo.

But actually, I meant you guys specifically, not your parents and families. I was wondering what you, as artists, have chosen to decorate your rooms or apartments or studios with.

We have mostly original art, mine, my bf's, my friends', my mom's and since we exhibit other people's stuff in restaurants, we have their stuff lying around as well, we try to hang them when we have space. I also have Brom calendars:^^:

I've a crapload of oils that I've done (several not hung yet), a few photos that my grandfather took (he was an amature photographer during the 30's/40's, and then a Naval Photographer's assistant during WWII in the Pacific - got some cool shit there), a piece my mother did, a Micheal Whelan poster (The White Dragon) and a Todd Lockwood print. Oh, and a 1985 Ventura County Fair poster. And two large hand made Thai fans that a client gave me years ago.

I think that's everything.

Oh, and of course, a ton of kids drawings from my two boys.

I rarely hang my own art... given that I rarely paint traditionally anymore.

I do have one framed piece of art on my wall, among the Totoro wall scroll and catfish poster...

...and animation cel from The Last Unicorn. Yeah baby!

I would like to get more art prints on my wall, but the posters from the MFA are so damn pricey. I'm saving for a Sargent coffee table book from there anyway.

"My home is my Domain. I put up what I want, where I want it."
Well let me backtrack a bit. The house is off limits for me. No posters or paintings of any kind on the walls. My sons do have every swimsuit model poster on their walls though.

My shop, where I do paint has plenty of stuff though. Frazetta posters as well as other artists. Some of my own stuff too. I also have sketches, drawings and wips taped to some of the walls and doors. A private little world I can sink into at times.Quite inspiring and peaceful.

I have one oil painting ( copy of Pieter Claesz's " Breakfast with Ham", ) and one pastel landscape. I'm planning to have more. Have a lot of dear to me small statures, interesting boxes, decorative stuff. Mine- no, hehehe, even framed some, still, no desire to hang them. I'm hanging only the art I can look at and never get bored.

my bedroom is wallpapered in old movie posters (60's mainly, chosen for visual appeal over movie quality) and framed silver age comics, my livingroom/studio has 2 of my own paintings, a Berkey prelim, some framed drawings, and a framed copy of the New York Herald (April 15th, 1865) with the headline "Important: The Assassination of President Lincoln" that cost me less than a peperoni pizza. Used to have a Geof Darrow drawing too, but I gave it to a friend before I ever got to hanging it.

i have a number of works, mostly just pretty pictures but there are a few of interest that were recently inherited. An oil by Karl Heffner (look him up) which is pretty cool, a watercolour by William Wyld, a number of screenprints by my aunt who is a cool printmaker and a couple of landscape studies by my uncle who's a painter. also there are 5 portraits of family and relations (2 of which are boring as hell). Of course, these are all my parents' rather than actually mine. i just have friends' drawings and paintings that i've got through exchanges for my own drawings and paintings.

some day i'll find a bag of money sitting, unwanted, in the street and i'll go buy loadsa cool stuff for myself

The walls in my room have been completely blank ever since it was decorated last summer. I've got the frames, I'm just too picky on what to put up.

As for the computer room I have two chinese scrolls with something like "Keep working towards your goal" or "Work hard and you'll be rewarded"....I should get them translated, lol.

In thr living we have one landscape oil painting (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/oilpainting.jpg) and a 4-piece slab thing. I don't know what it's called, but it's decorated using shells.

http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/4piece.jpg

My dan bau (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/danbau_close.jpg) is decorated in the same way.

I want a mahogany cello with such details - my mum said we could probably have it made in Việt Nam.

More (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/shells_front.jpg) shell (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/shells_back.jpg) stuff! (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/shells_close.jpg)

It's so beautiful...

I am officially jealous of both Dan and Irene. Dan, is that the original Foster demon painting? That's got to be my favorite piece I've seen in the last few years...

Got myself an Ash Wood print on the way, a few Dave McKean posters, and an assload of Giger pictures ripped out of calendars.

yup,
it is.
and i agree, one of my favorites.
as i mentioned to fellah,
the scan really doesnt do the original justice.
the thing that kills me is that the scratches in the demon's chest are actually real scratches.
the paint builds up around them, making them truly dimensional.

Yes, you are right. I am ashamed. :nohope: I moved some paintings around when the Spectrum show was in town and I have yet to organize.....Now, where did I leave that hammer.....

Seriously - there are few artists that equal Berkey.

Dan and Irene's art collection makes me want to cry. And I know there's much more impressive one's out there.

Until the house finishes getting built, we're not hanging any art (living at the inlaws). Before we became gypsies, we had a number of my originals hanging, a sculpture from my uncle we received as a wedding present, a few watercolors from my wife's great aunt and a few framed prints of Monet's that my wife picked up in France (not my taste, but I let her win on that one...) My studio is a relative hodge podge of stuff I like, from Michael Whelan calendars to an Art Adams poster to a Waterhouse print... I try to minimize the amount of stuf I hang in the studio-- enough to get inspired, not so much as to get distracted.

Spiderman Plates (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/superfightingrobot/spiderplates.jpg)

Harry Potter poster (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/superfightingrobot/HarryPotter.jpg)
