OLD:
Hello everyone, my name is Daniel, I live in Minnesota (USA). I’ve been drawing, with the confidence that I can improve, since mid February of 2005. That’s about the time when I got my first sketchbook, a comfortably small, 70pg , 9x6. This is the first page:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/revender/1stfirst.jpg

I have since finished that sketchbook and moved onto larger ones. I’ve been meaning to post a sketchbook for quite some time, so I’d like to include a ton of pages from the last few months, however, I do not mean for this to be a “dump”, so if it’s too many images please let me know and I will make it a smaller selection. I’d be very interested (not to mention grateful) to read your comments and critiques of what progression I’ve made, as well as the places where I’m having trouble.

What I’d like to gain from posting an updated sketchbook is the advice and motivation to improve and the encouragement to try new things. I would also hope that this will help me to interact with the community more.

The following are from imagination, photo reference, master works, and observation.

Comments and Critiques are welcome, thank you.

I like your figure drawings - the people, more than the fantasy. Are they done from life or from reference photos?
And the shadowing on the skulls is really good as well.

revender
January 5th, 2006, 12:53 AM
sochap, Thanks for your reply and comments. The skulls are copied out of a book by Joseph Sheppard "Anatomy: A Complete Guide for Artists (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486272796/qid=1136437453/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-4203099-8966245?n=507846&s=books&v=glance)"

The figures vary from observation to imagination to photo/master copy. If it looks really rough and gesture like (crappy-for even gestures) then it's observation. If it looks rough and sort of inarticulate it is probably imagination. If it looks more polished it's either master copy (reference) or other photo reference.

I took two life drawing classes last summer at MCAD (http://www.mcad.edu/). I'd love to take more, I just don't know where to look, there is one at a community college this spring, but I'd like to find something more consistant until I go to college full time.

Hy revender,

it`s Jan van Yorck, to see what`s going on in your brain.
I see you practice anatomie constantly.
The anatomie of many of these figures seems very naturalistic, I think with your fast anatomie style you are directly on the right way.
I would be very interested of some worked out characters to see what`s your favorite style and imagery.
My favorites here are the skulls and the sitting act of the woman.
I like these fatoutlined charakters, they remember me at the "jugendstil" pictues.

Good work, espacially the versatility of themes.
Stay creativ and keep on searching for inspiration.

anymale- I'm glad that you see improvement. I really want to develop in figure drawing.

Tigermilk- I will continue to study, thank you for commenting.

JanvanYorck- Thanks for you coments. I have never really spent much time developing a character with mutliple sketches. In my next post I will try and have some more developed characters with various sketches.

Thank you all for stopping in and posting.

Sorry for the gap in posting, I had finals this last week (after getting back from winter break... :[ ).

Here are a few pages; Imagination, Museum observation, and book / master studies.

Great revender! I can see improvement in your work already.. Keep up the studies, but try and utilise what you've learnt in your own work too... When you are doing rendered work, especially the fist image in the most recent post, try and look for the proper values of the light and dark areas so you get a better contrast..

keep it going...!

Nice stuff here, I like the anatomy studies and your various ways of describing form. I really dig the plane descriptions in the middle one:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/revender/2-7-2006.jpg

Now, for some constructive criticism. I think you can vary your lines a bit more in some pictures to lead the eye around more and bring focus to important areas. Also, I think the lack of backgrounds/environments for some (heavily) shaded drawings flattens the work and alters the values. For instance, the profile head to the left of the sheet I linked to above feels rather flat compared to the middle statuette.

That's it, keep it up bro! :)

Zelaron- Thank you for your comments. I have been using a mechanical pencil most of the time, because I'm so lazy when it comes to sharpening, but I'll try to push myself to use other pencils so that I can develop my line variation. I'll also try to put my figures into some sort of environment or context.

Hi everybody. I'm posting from QuakeCon 2006
I drove the three past years, but this year it was a tough choice: Don't go or ride a bus. The bus trip turned out fine though, my biggest worry was my computer, it arrived safe and sound.

This is my 4th year to attend QuakeCon. It's smaller this year (BYOC is about 1800) but it's been a lot of fun. I've played the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars mp beta three times so far :$ .

Here are some pictures.

In line, drawing.

Hi Ferg, thank you for the comments. QuakeCon is a lot of fun, I haven't regretted going a single year. If you can get to Texas it's well worth it. I also have a copy of RTCW/ET Platinum Edition signed by all the guys from Splash Damage (developers of ET and the upcoming ET:QW), but I got that at QuakeCon 2004 for free. :tihi: I'll go ahead and scan that too, why not?

Here are some more drawings. One is on a napkin I used while at my brothers wedding and the other is a page of self portraits. At the moment I'm struggling with my hair, I figure the sooner I lose my hair the quicker I'll be able to accurately draw my skull.

It looks like you have a very strong commitment to learning, you're definitely headed in the right direction.
Just a small advice: watch the features placement on your heads.

entdroid, thank you for your kind words. I know that a number of my features, especially the eyes and noses..and mouths :tihi: , are placed a bit wonkers in relation to the rest. So I will try to especially give some time into examining whether things look right before I move on to another drawing.

Here are are some more! The gestures are from at a mall (I work in a cell phone store--don't hate me! :^^;: ) I am awful at gesture drawings and now I thought that I'd do them regularly... so that I'll improve. What a thought? Any suggestions/comments on process or what key things to try and capture first (ex. spine->outline/mass, always include feet?) would be greatly appreciated.

Other than figure gestures, I've done a few pages of facial gestures. They didn't turn out too great, but I'm satisfied to get the practice in.

Comments and critiquing are strongly encourage! (thanks!)

Here are a few new pages. I'm posting from a work computer and I was surprised to find that the images in my sketchbook are incredibly bright and high contrast compared to my home computer. :[ I'm a bit worried about that, so if they look really bright/high contrast on your monitor let me know.

I'll have to take a look from a few more computers to make sure this is the exception.

I also gave that swordsman a new head because I was disgusted with the previous one. I went to Wikipedia's list of hats and head ware and just started painting a few dozen of them on him. The result is a combination of a few of them. Giving him something of a Tusken Raider look.

dkounios, thank you for the kind words. Can't say I've heard the word "inspiring" in regards to my stuff before.

Here are some figure studies I did in photoshop. They're from a reference gallery over at www.characterdesign.com ., By doing them I'm hope start familiarizing myself with color.

Wow.. really neat stuff you have here.. reminds me of bridgeman's life drawing studies.

Very good grasp on volume and form.

My computer has been out of commission for a few weeks since getting back from Quakecon 07, so no digital stuff. I was foolishly confident that because my hard drives had held in place in the case, while being checked on the way to Texas, that they would on the flight back. Imagine my surprise at the sight of all the drives flopping around inside the case. :xpld: I was sure that the motherboard and three hard drives would be completely dead. Thankfully the motherboard didn't suffer any damage and despite some squeaking and rattles I've managed to back up all of my art and important stuff off of the hard drives. (I took the cpu-heatsink/fan as well as the graphics card out of the computer for the flights.) I'll be getting a new hard drive (my windows partition was damaged beyond operation) so I should be able to get back to it soon. I'm excited to play Bioshock!

This was my 5th consecutive year going to Quakecon. It was great as usual. I got to play Left 4 Dead, Stranglehold and see the unveiling of id's new game; Rage, along with a demonstration of id tech 5. All were very cool. Not to mention the 3000+ lan. The only bummer is that this is also the first year I didn't get an official "QuakeCon 200(7)" shirt. Oh well, I got a bunch of other shirts and crap.

Spiral Fish, thanks for posting. I have a few Bridgeman books, but haven't worked through them as much as I ought to. The other day my dad gave me a few art books he had found at a garage sale/used book store. One of them was a 2nd print of Bridgeman's Life Drawing. I believe it was printed in 1925. It's pretty cool.

Attached are some heads out of my head. The Bridgeman book and my blitzed face at QuakeCon.

Now that my computer is going I thought I'd fiddle with a few of the previous heads in photoshop. All are done without references, though I did use a light and mirror to work out the light and shadow on the low lit one. The Venus Cow Trap started out as sketches in the CA Sketcher and I wanted to color them. Though at one point I looked at it and at a glance it looked like some sort of rectal explosion. So I chose to make the insect one as well.

I really love you pen lines (pics in the 2nd page) and marker work, Very well done.

In terms of your digi art, you learnt very fast, kudos to that.
Nice anatomy studies too, btw.

I like the idea of the cowtrap, but IMO it looks a tad too friendly :)

Keep it up!

Hey awesome awesome studies you have there! I wish I could paint that well just yet !

this one bothers me a bit http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=193228&stc=1&d=1188267568

I think he needs more to his forehead. It makes him seem a bit like a caveman, slopes back a bit too far.

or it could just be me ....^^

sweet_sorrow, Thank you very much. You're right about the Traps, they're deceptively friendly. I'll do something in the future to demonstrate the bloody gruesome aftermath which results from a cow/beetle-Trap attack. It won't be pretty. >:D

Chiko, Gosh man, I knew the caveman-looking guy was rushed when I posted it, but if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have had the will to examine it and try to work it out. So I made two alternatives, both are still gravely flawed (uh, they look like but) but when compared to the original it's shocking the differences. Let me know which is better and if I should try to improve and polish it. I just hope everything I do isn't as bad and unnoticed by myself.

Version 2 (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v603/revender/?action=view&current=ssenakrad_finith.jpg)

Attached is a whole variety of stuff. I'm desperately lacking in knowledge of color. So I've done three vegetable (culinary-wise(har har)) studies, as well as implementing color in a few other bits.

Aside from the veggie studies, everything is from my head without references. As always, I'd really appreciate critiques and comments. I take everything to heart. Nothing helps me improve the way a little perspective can.

Here's another shovel. The landscape was based off a 3CH theme-- "An Angel dissects an Alien near a river."

Edit: The last image is a self portrait I did a few months ago, I guess I hated it enough back then to not post it.

Here are a few foot studies(?)... they were referenced from photos.

After that is a painting referenced from the first chapter of Krystof Kieslowski's Decalogue.

The final three images; two portraights and some characters, were done from my head.

Here are a few things I did to get out of routine and experiment with different approaches. The caterpillar was done in the CA sketcher. All images were done from mind.

I haven't done a self portrait in too long and this one marks a big improvement from the last one. It took a fraction of the time to complete and looks better.

Also include are some creature heads, with a close up of the one I like best.

Been trying to work regularly. Got some quick designs, heads, lips from reference, another one of those soviet figurines done from observation, and finally a stab at color. I know nothing about color, it seems daunting.

Here are some of the things I've been working on. Mostly a lot of quick stuff. Hopefully the majority of it is readable. I've been trying out different processes for creating the figure thumbnails. Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's a variety of stuff, old and recent.

A selection of Self Portraits. I did a digital self portrait each day for around 45 days, unfortunately these are the best either with likeness or execution.

Some Zbrush sculpts, digital life, and concepts. I've got a ton of recent anatomical studies, but I'm too lazy to scan them.

I really should be studying for my finals, not posting this old stuff. The purple alien I painted over in photoshop, I was inspired by some of the things Hurricane had posted in his thread.

it's really nice to see a thread full of images instead of words
