Digital Painting and Resolution

I'm still a little confused about it all.
What resolution do you guys use for digital art if you're not planning to print? And what if you are going to print?
I know 300dpi is considered 'high resolution' but scanning at this res produces pretty large images that are hard to work with, and some people seem to prefer to go well beyound 300. What is a good res to scan at? Ofcourse, none of this is for professonal level stuff, just home use.

i scan at 800-1024dpi, or lpi. depending on how good i want it. At resolutions like that, i can count the individual fibers in my paper. The downside is, it slows your computer down to a crawl. What i would do is scan at a high resolution, save a copy, and then scale it down a whole bunch to a workable size. That way theres less loss of quality, while retaining the size flexability you want.

Ok, i've just done some more reading about resolution on other sites.
