First off: welcome to CA! (lol funny cause I just registered today)
Anyway, i like your chairs the most, I would recommend some life drawing and stuff where you dont use a ruler (cant see much difficult in using a ruler hehe). This is a decent start and you just have to keep going, its all about practice but im sure you already know that!
I look forward to see more :) (how about you start with hands? :tihi: )

I took your advice Anjo and did some life drawings. Just some hands and some horns I bought at a sidewalk sale for a hat rack. I also found an old blending stump in my room, so i decided to try it out on the cup and ball.

Welcome! Try out a couple of round things with the 1 and 2 point perspectives. or a whole word. I'll get some examples drawn up and show you some basics. Okay I got a little thing to explain finding center and mid points which will be helpful for more complicated things. It is for 2 point perspective. Hopefully this is some help.

And here is another thing that may help.

Thanks for the tips ludwrathjd! I got two pages up today. The first is some quick sketches I did at a restaurant. The second is some more hand studies that I don't think came out very well.

Keep practicing all that you learn. Perspective is a fun place to start, but it can become a rut that doesn't offer much advancement if taken alone. (I was stuck to perspective drawings for the longest time.) So it's good that you've begun drawing a variety of things.
Check out http://saveloomis.org/ above all I'd recommend 'Figure Drawing for All It's Worth' It will get you started on the figure and it also includes a number of perspective diagrams that you'll be interested in.
Keep at it man, you're on your way.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
revender- Actually, I got a copy of "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" a few days ago at my library. I hadn't had the time recently to read it much, but I did a proportion study from the book today since you reminded me. hmmm...I think I made him too thin from the waist down. I'll do another tomorrow.

I definitely made his waist too small.

I did another loomis study today. I think I got the proportions down a little better this time, and I inked this one too. I also did a quick sketch I was thinking about for a logo/signature. I've trying to come up with a good one for a while and this is the best idea I've gotten. Any Ideas?

More Loomis. I got a little tired of proportion, so I moved onto gestures. The top row is just trying to get a feel for it, and the two on the left of the second row are from the book. The rest are from reference except for the one in the bottom left.

you doing some good things man. looks like you were studying vertical dimensions of the form. Also study the horizontal dimensions too, that is hip, head, leg, and torso width.. etc.
also, way to practice using vanishing points and various perspective.

Sweet! Three replies! I'm moving up in the world:^^:
Tigermilk- I probably should be doing more life drawings. I'll get around to it one day.
LoveHateWar- I gave someone an idea? Nice.
incolorinred- Thanks! I'll probably be doing these studis spanned out over a while. (mainly because I'm too much of a procrastinator to do them all at once.) After I finish Loomis I'll move on to the anantomy of individual body parts.
Ugh... These turned out terrible. I should probably be doing all of the views on the same page. I have got to stop being so lazy. I'll probably post more again tonight if I get around to it.

Went out and sketched some stuff. I did it in pen, because I thought it might help me make my lines more confident. I kept forgetting I was using a pen though and kept trying to shade like a pencil (I should learn how to crosshatch), so it came out a little wierd, but it actually helped a lttle. I'll probably do it again sometime.

Heya, checking up on ya. Nice vertical proportions on the last study. One thing to keep in mind when drawing from referance is to draw what you see not what it is. That means, dont draw from memory or what you think something is, draw the shapes, lines, and values that makeup whatever you are looking at. It may help you to start drawing that way by drawing simple shapes like cylinders, rectangles, cubes or whatever shape you may see in the object; combining them to make the form of that thing. Hopefully the sketch in the link helps you understand. I used eliptical spheres mostly for the hand 'cause the hand is mostly plump and round, its not detailed but it is enough to get across the form of a hand.

Recursive_End- Thanks!
ludwrathjd- Thanks for the tips! That actually helps alot. After seeing that I decided to practice on some more hand studies made from simple shapes. #2 is just a cleaned up version of #1. And if #4 and 5 look wierd, it's because their someone elses hands. #5 is also wearing gloves. Eventually I'll probably do this to help with gestures.

Good hand studies, the bottom one on the last page turnd out really good. Maybe try going larger with these and putting in some of the anatomical details (tendons, muscle groups, etc.). Keep pounding on that basic figure construction too. Good job catching your own errors!

This is a good start, but as others have said life drawing and studies will really elp yu get better alot faster. Observational drawing quite a bit different from conceptual drawing tho. Like ludwrathjd said, draw what u see, not what u think u see. Doing exercises like blind contour drawing, seeing negative shapes, etc will really help train ur eye for life drawing. Betty edwards book is pretty good for learning those type of exercises. For conceptual drawing though, uve gt to understand construction and be able to break the object your drawing into simple geometric shapes. Anyway keep it up

I wish I had something better to show, but I guess thats what I get for eyeballing it. I should work on seeing my mistakes BEFORE I ink something in. By the way, am I making my images too big?

Hmmm.... been a while since I've had any replies. Today I did some cake slices from some different angles to try and get better at perspective/size without using a ruler or checking distances. The second page is some more hand and foot studies, and I threw in a crappy and quick first SP because if I can't draw myself I probably won't be able to draw anyone else. I'll spend more time on the next one, because just about the only thing I got right on ths one is the hair. Expect some eye and mouth studies too because I have no idea what to do with those.

The eye ball looks really neat, it also works very well compositionally (for me anyway). On the other sketches your ellipses look a bit wobboly, check out the ellipse drawing tutorial at http://www.drawthrough.com/. Kitsu- Congratulations! You were the first to spot the Beatles referance! I would give you a prize, but I don't have one. Thanks for the link! I should work on circles more.
guggenmaneuver- Thanks! I'll get a scanner one day, but I'm a little low on cash, (TV broke, had to get a new one). Would it be better just to get a cheapo scanner, or set up some kind of stand/lighting arrangement for my camera? because my camera has a better resolution then any scanner I can afford. I'll paint one of my pencils when I draw something worth painting, and expect more proportion/gesture studies.
Anymale- Thanks for the comment!
I had my first art induced breakdown today. I was trying to study for midterms and practice foreshadowing at the same time, and my brain imploded, so I scribbled in PS for a few hours to cool down. The first page is my unfinished studies (still rubbish), and the second/third are the PS scribbles. The first is a life drawing of a water bottle, contour, about 10-15 min. Second is just a flow of thought scribble that started out nothing like this. I might finish the second PS one, cause I kinda like it. I also have a cold. Hooray for today!

Cool stuff! The eyeball looks a little flat, but I like the surreal composition! AS far as eyes and mouths go, I think the best way (apart from buying a book on it..:\ ) I think, is to look at your own, and at other's. So basically I see you have some solid skillz with the ruler. The anatomy, it's tough I know, but maybe if you bring in what your doing with the buildings into the figure, it would help transition you to organic figures, we are build like machines so maybe pushing that to the extreme will help you understand better the motion of a fluid figure. I like what your doing with the hands, spacing out the sections, more of this type of studies will help you, I think.

I like your sketches from restaurant and foreshortening practice. They look very promising.
I suggest constructing some big composition from for example chair, two boxes, white sheet and some smaller elements like pots, bottes, fruits. Then you can draw this on big format (at least A3). This way you can do long strokes and your line confidence will improve very quickly as well as proportion sense.
Might be boring but it helped me a lot :).
Keep it up!

Farvus- Thanks! Draw big to build line confidence, got it. I'll get some A3 paper sometime, or maybe I have some. Well, I'll add it to the now very long list of things to do.
I drew a tree and a plant today, along with some line practice with a brush pen you should just ignore. I'm kind of angry though, because the camera didn't pick up a lot of the detail in the tree, and I spent a while on that. I really have to get a scanner.

Wow, month 1 is already over. ONWARD! :pirate:
The first for today is from me playing with a vector/animation program over a sketch I did in school. It didn't come out so well. The next is another project for school. I had to construct a stool with negative space in between vertical lines without drawing an outline first. I don't quite see the point, but it's a fun challenge. Obviously it's only half done. The last is a quick setup for a PS piece I might finish tomorrow. There are too many problems right now to name.I could do it tonight, but I choose sleep. I kind of feel like I've had a bad drawing day the past few days. Hopefully I'll bounce back soon.

Serpian- Thanks! It is a lot easier with a scanner.
More stuff from art class. The first is the finished boots. I'm not satisfied with how it turned out, but seeing as it was due two days ago, I don't quite have a choice. The second is just another exercise I don't really get, but kind of liked. We had to take 8 coat hangers and throw them on the floor, and then draw them the way they fell. I also fixed up yesterday's doodle. I'll do basic values tomorrow, because once again, I choose sleep. I should also get a ref for the gun, because I have no idea what I'm doing with that. I think I might be out of this bad drawing area soon, so I might go back to gestures/proportions/hands etc. to get back in the swing of things. Good thing I have a long weekend. :teeth:

Kitsu- Thanks! Now I just have to work on the details/shading.
Forgot to update yesterday....or do anything yesterday for that matter. So today I decided to work on that outline I've posted for a few days, and in the end basically completely stared from scratch, because there were so many problems with the outline. I've lost track on how much time I've spent on this, and there are still a million problems, but hopefully this will become my first finished piece.
Any crits on this are highly appreciated, I need all the help I can get. Also, if anyone has a ref of a gun in this position, I haven't been able to find anything. I am also addicted to BAGeL Radio (http://www.bagelradio.com/). If you like Indie/Rock and sometimes some Techno/Hip-Hop, this is a must see...or listen. Wow, you've been doing a lot while I wasn't looking! The gun wip is looking good, it looks like things are in the right places, I can see where things are going as far as the values go. All it needs is a little more time and a few more details put in place. Speaking of details: googlage (http://images.google.com/images?q=looking%20down%20the%20barrel). Couple of decent picks on the first page, probably some more further in.
The other (numerous!) sketches and studies are also looking good. On the sketch of the guy's back and profile though it looks like the hips have 'fallen down' a little. The forearms have also streched to get the hands where they belong. Lately I have been drawing a lot of ovoid shapes to help place the ribcage and hip regions, it might help you to see whats too skinny/fat/far appart etc.

So tired. Tiny update on the gun wip. Messed around for a while, trying to take the shadows and highlights further, because my crappy blending technique seems to leave me with a lot of blurry grays. Still can't fix nose. Heres a before and after. Tell me which you like best. (please) More tomorrow, after I get some sleep.

Sorry for no update yesterday, had alot of homework. I decided to start my first serious SP today. I cheated a little and took a photo referance and scanned frequently so I could see it right next to the ref. I was surprised how little I knew about my own face (I mean, it's not like I don't see me everyday), considering it took me five tries to get anything even close to right. It was nice just doodling for the fun of it again. My sister came home from college to visit today and brought some ink and brushes. I spent most of today messing around with them. The only thing worth posting is a little wash practice. I was trying to imitate Enrico Casarosa (http://www.enricocasarosa.com/), but it became painfully apparent that I don't know how to do washes. heya, followed the link from your sig ;)
its nice to see the progression in your work so far with both anotomy and perspective, thought of couple of things you might want to try for line confidance, to help produce stronger cleaner lines, using general objects can help lay out your structures, squares, circles and similer at the base layer of the drawing can help give a feel of where everything is going to be for when you start to get more into the piece.(use a soft pencil ;D)
and the other, although it might sound a bit daft is scribbling :D
litterally just a page of lines or marks for no purpose, repeat strokes to get a feel for angles and strengths, get used to the flow of the pencil on the page without actually trying to produce anything from it. it quite relaxing too, just let the pencil do the work :)

Those loomis studies are looking nice. In my experience, though, knowing the names of muscles is far less important than Mister Loomis makes it out to be. That's just me, though. If you actively discuss/critique such things on a regular basis, I'm sure it's more worthwhile.
Those chair contours are looking lovely. Have you been studying from 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain', perchance?
I like the FF9 drawings, too. I used to draw those characters all the time when I was a youngin'. The concept art in that game is great.

I know exactly where you're coming from! I've been less emphatic on my studies in the last week or so. I'd say it's good for you. Drawing for fun, without reference may not be as good for progress, but chances are you'll draw a lot more if you find it to be a blast. Besides, if you can't keep art fun, what's the point? Keep it up, I'd say. It's a good thing.
Sorry to hear your sketchbook is lonely. I'll try to drop in and offer insight whenever I can.

Cool, Responses! Thanks everyone! I had a week of nothing there.
afgal- Thanks man! Keep at it yourself!
Monny- Thanks for the tips! I should really block more things in with basic shapes. (don't know why I never thought of using a soft pencil for that.) I do the pages of lines every now and then, but not as often as I should.
Ryn- Thanks Ryn! No, I'm not reading 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain', should I be? I've heard about it alot. FF9 does have cool costumes. I found a few days ago and decided to give it another whirl.:teeth: Hmmm... perhaps "get rid of" was too strong, because if I didn't feel any obligation, I'd be too lazy to do anything, but like you said, if it's not enjoyable, why do it?
I actually went out and drew from life today! Didn't go very well.
I spent more time looking for people than I did drawing them, and even then they kept moving. (apparently people don't like it when you stare at them too long.) Hopefully I'll do more tomorrow, and sorry if these are hard to see.

Hey Joe!
Nice SB! I just flipped through from the start - You have really improved over a short time. Your last anatomy studies look great, as do the Peer Project exercises. You've been getting great advice here.
I would offer that you really examine a piece after working on it. Where did you have trouble, and why? What did you do right, and why? What could have worked better? These things can help you see your path to improvement.
Let's see some more work on your SP with the gun. Keep it up!

Good update. I dig the polar bear skull ink drawing. It's good that you try to draw every shape with single line. Try also to vary the line thickness. Heavier and closer to viewer objects/edges have thicker lines. Also those that are in shadow.
In every drawing you should see objects as 3d shapes. I mean sphere, cyllinder, box, cone and so on. In other words everything should have it's volume. Some objects are of course only close to primary masses but you can distort them in every possible way. For example Rupert T. Roach could be made of stretched sphere and few flat cyllinders for the upper part of body.
My advice is to draw loosely some 3d shapes (like HERE (http://www.ar.utexas.edu/blood/images/volumes1.jpg)) and construct something from them later. Third step would be to draw just anything from but with volume :).
Keep it up.

Yes, you should definately look into it. Well worth the time/money. At first I had discounted it as only being useful to absolute beginners. But it offers a lot of insight into why we draw like we do, what causes us to make mistakes, and why practice is helpful. It's really an invaluable read, I highly reccomend it. I bet you'd learn quite a bit.

hey cup!
this (http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d109/cojcpm/021806-glasses.png) is in fact looking much better. (sorry it's taken me a little while to get back in here to check up!) It's funny how if you get one aspect of the drawing DEAD on, then other parts that aren't quite as good are forgivable, ya know? This page (http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d109/cojcpm/022606-jack.png) is definitely my favorite ... It reminds me a lot of this artist Raymond Pettibon's comic-ish panels (http://www.ikonltd.com/artists/details.cfm?ArtistID=10&AutoArtID=94) with some text written on them. it's really a lovely combination. This is looking goooooood (http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d109/cojcpm/022606-pol.png), careful with the pen work.

Once advice, avoid pressing too much with your pencil. And keep your distance from your paper, try to keep an overall view of what your doing so you can more easily see your proportion errors.
Anyway, keep practicing :)

You have a good amount of sketches in here. Keep working on those anatomy studies and if you havent yet, start doing some figure master copies. I think some more studies of light and value would help too. You have the right idea with the guy holding the match and the green ball, but could be pushed farther. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I don't know what I caught, but it sucks. My brain is currently non-functional. As a result, taking matt's advice on the master studies probably not a good idea. Everything is off. Thge first is a sketch and the second is what came from a real try. It's from a da Vinci piece.

March 16th, 2006, 08:52 PM
Yo Cup! Thanks for commenting on my sketchbook, thar. I just skimmed through yours, and I really think you're making a lot of progress. The only specific advice I have is to look at some of the proportion rules and really practice them until they become second nature. That's pretty much how I learned-a torso is x heads big, so on, so forth, drawing that until it just comes to you. You're making great progress, and I'm glad to see you working in charcoal (I just love the stuff, hehehe.)
I guess if I could offer some general advice, I'd tell you things I've only recently learned myself. Two of the most important things to an artists growth are confidence and fearlessness. It's absolutely VITAL that you are not afraid to fail or make an ugly picture, and when it comes to making art, it's necessary to learn to just...do it! If you want to draw something, just be confident that you can if you try, and don't hesitate or try to make things perfect from the get-go. After years of inactivity I've learned that 1000 bad drawings will net you a lot more successes than one good one will!
Well, even if you knew these things, I guess it can't hurt to hear them again. All in all, great sketchbook! I love to see so much progress like this. Keep it up, I can't wait to see more!

Think about planes and edges. A lot of your sketches are flat. With the figure drawing on the bottum of page 2, the arms and legs arent reading as cylinders. Same issues are happening in your portraits. Head Drawing by Andrew Loomis will help you greatly. Keep on sketchin'

Studies are good. Yeah, planes can be hard to do sometimes, but you gotta do it.. Also remember proportions.Sit back and look at your picture, see what seems to be wrong (cause there'll always be something wrong, I tells ya! :P), and if you're surte of what it is, correct it. This is of course pretty obious, but it really helps to actually do it.

Hey there. You've got some nice drawings here. Just my little bit:
Get the shape right. Once youre comfortable with the line and the shape of the object, think about the light as in: where the light is shining from, and how intense the light is.
Form there, you can start adding the tone and the value to your object. What i keep seeing nowadays is implementation of shadow and light in places which do not make sense, which as a result, makes the object look unrealistic. See which part the light is shining the most on, and parts where there is no light at all.
Keep it up!!!

Thanks amer-nazri! Light, planes, value I know. People have been telling me this so much recently that you'd think I'd listen, so today I did! I actually did a serious figure study. I chose a picture with a little foreshortening because I need the practice, and I set up the anatomy and the planes.

Weird, you updated at the same time as me - down to the minute.
Anyway, the dedication is really standing out. Life drawings of bottles and wineglasses are tedious at best, but you're staying tough. That's good. Maybe try to draw the actual circles that make up the glasses as they go up, to help keep it in perspective. That probably makes no sense, so I can draw an example if you'd like.
Faces are looking good; you're progressing quite nicely. Little crit for the hair though: Stroke single lines with the pencil to make hair look nice, scribbling the pencil back and forth makes it look odd and hastily rendered.
Beyond that, things are looking great, and your progress since page 1 is quite inspirational. Keep it up!

your selfportrait failed on the moment you drew in the place of the features. Check out the third step you posted, flip it horizontally in photoshop. You made the nose to long, placed the eyes to high and the mouth to low and to small, the jaw to round, ear to far back. Sorry if this sounds harsh :) but it's the truth.
Mayby a good exercice is to make some blind drawings. Take a paper and a pencil, follow the lines of your hand, all the bumps. Now draw your hand without looking or picking your pencil back off the paper, while looking the same way you where before. You got to change the way you look at things. A hand doesn't look like the way you think it does. Draw hat you see, not what you think you see.
When doing hannds, ears, noses, bodies, folding it's a good thing to watch for overlapping shapes. If you overlap the shapes in the right way you get depth.
look at this for example (not mine), the way he overlaps his lines in a simple way, but everything works

Whew...I guess I haven't updated for a few days, but you know...family and Easter and all. Hey, At least I have a good excuse this time! It's also always nicee to just think about new techniques, but not be pressed to actually try them out. I think I may finally be getting a slight grasp on this whole shading, form, 3-d object thing, maybe. I also ordered a bunch of Bridgeman books, so expect that in the future. I also may be ink-experimenting in the near future.

These studies are important <> values have limitations <> the most values I think it is practical to work with are 9 most artist use 5 or 7 <> the general rule of thumb is to use a few as possible to get the job done.
When you do value studies of refs. start by using only black and white than do the same analysis using 3 then 5 <> you should fine that you can describe almost everything with a few values.

It's really cool to watch your stuff get progressively better. It would rock if we lived near each other. That would be awesome to get together with someone my age who actually understands the importance of studies. You're going to go a long way in art, man. Hey, maybe we'll meet up in the professional world someday. Well, that's pretty out there, but it'd be cool...
Great stuff dude. I'm looking into the Andrew Loomis, and even some Burne Hogarth you suggested.

Mentler- Thanks! D'oh! That value thing thing is one of the things that would take me forever to guess, but make so much sense once you say it. I suppose the easiest way to increase contrast would be to lower the number of values. Thanks again!
CuriousJoe8- Thanks! Yeah, too bad. Maybe if you at least lived in a nearby state we could go sketching or something, but...yeah...Ontario... Maybe I'll see you at a workshop someday! Good job checking out loomis too, great stuff!

Mmm. Mmm, studies.
Everything is looking quite good so far. You're working on your weaknesses. Great.
Only crit I have for now is to control your strokes. Stroke in values 'with the shape' of the object, not just back and forth. For example, on the large, left segment of the pepper, you put in value simply by shading in horizontally - don't do that! Curve your strokes with the shape of the pepper. It helps to establish a form, and stops it from looking so flat. Also, if you crosshatch, try to keep your pencil sharper, and your lines more even, and (sometimes, depending on the circumstance) closer together. On your pepper, for instance, it kinda looks like someone just attacked it with a switchblade.
You're studying dilligently. Keeping everything right is tough, I'm sure you know, but you aren't letting that deter you. Pat yourself on the back, and keep on truckin'.
Serpian
April 21st, 2006, 02:37 PM
I like the studies, and I like those still lifes. They've got good values, but remember to concentrate on the shape as well. I don't know exactly how the garlic looked like in real life, but that one looks pretty darn skewed. But as I said, good values! Keep it up!

Slooooooow down! The hastiness is still shining through. Funny, drawing is supposed to be therapeutic and calming, but I (and apparently you as well) find it to be nerve wrecking. We expect so much of ourselves, and strive so much for improvement, that we often forget to have fun with it. Maybe take a breather before you draw. Sit outside and breathe deeply. Close your eyes. Make a cup of tea. Meditate. Listen to calming music or white noise. Whatever relaxes you, do it. Remind yourself that quality is better than quantity; what good are 50 pages of studies if you rushed too fast to pay attention to any of them? Studies are useless if you can't concentrate and take in all the information.
You're doing all the right stuff, so try to take in more, and sloooow it down.

the human machine is one of my favorite anatomy books; i love the style
your lines are getting more confident -- the calves in your legs seem to be giving you trouble. i believe they are a bit big in comparison to the rest of the figure; also, in the page just posted, the femur looks a bit short compared to the bottom part of the leg.

Got that quote about me off of a Chinese forum thought it was pretty strange<>
BTW you bought the Bridgman books the right way <> the compilation version is not as good <> editors did not understand the material and the copy is not always with the right pics and even some of the drawing are upside down.

Oh boy, I've found a common error. 'Bout time.
You're drawing your legs way too short. I assume you're drawing from the head down (most people do). Quick way to establish correct proportions - use your fingers to gauge the distance from the top of the head to the crotch (I use my thumb and point finger, then space them accordingly). Once you get that measurement, move it to the lower half, making a little line at the bottom of the lower half. That'll be how far down the legs should go.
In case that made no sense, remember that the crotch will, more or less, mark the middle of the body, height-wise. As is, your legs are roughly a head too short.
"Line petting! No! Stop!" Made me chuckle. Hard habit to get out of.
And I am seriously considering buying those books you got. They look neat-o.

You're doing a good job with your push to get things right, studying anatomy (i'm on a bridgman quest myself right now), etc... in your more finished digi paints, i'm a firm believer in developing your image with regards to say 4-8 thumbnails (tiny, like maybe 1-2 inches tall on paper, in your sketchbook...these should be in proportion to your final piece be it a horizontal vertical, or even a damned dodecahedron for that matter...) and then working up your ideas from there into a MORE finished final sketch.... sure, it doesn't have to be perfectly rendered, but it presents your problems to you before you get to the stage of perspective errors and problematic areas in the final composition that aren't thought out so well.
i hope this helps you; you've certainly helped me a great deal with the encouragement!

Oh yeah, that perspective-piece is really good! If you want a heavy feel on the soliders, make them look "fat". Not fat in the sense that the soliders are fat, but as the guy keeps his lenght no matter how much armour you put on him, the final result will be pretty fat, in a sense of proportions. Play with exaggarations. Other than that, good work, keep on doin it!

Okie. You seem to be mostly clearing up some of the proportion problems from before. Legs are still a liiiittle too stubby, though. Just a bit. Still a huge improvement from a week or two ago, though. Arm/leg studies on the 22nd are a bit stubby, too.

Today I made what I think will be the most influential decision of my art to date. I'm moving my studio out of my room.
Two reasons:
1. My computer is too much of a distraction. I spend mre time looking at drawings on CA then I do drawing.
2. I'm going to build a real draft table devoted to art (And the occasional homework). Right now I just draw on my lap because there's ust too much crap on my desk to bother.
I'll probably have a room devoted to art within a week or so!
Didn't get to draw so much today, had an essay. Just studies and stuff.

Both of these are good ideas, and eerily enough, things I've done within the last year or so. Drafting tables are nice; that's all there is to it.
I also moved away from my computer to draw. It's a smart move. I still tote around a laptop for music but sometimes I have to unplug the wireless card because I'm hopelessly addicted to forums. It's a shame willpower isn't enough, but a little boost never hurts. Goodluck fighting the fight.

Bah, you don't give yourself enough credit. Talent, as far as I'm concerned, is far less important than working hard. Stop cutting yourself short. You have far more talent than most people and you have great worth ethics. That much will go far. So chin up, and be proud of yourself. You deserve it.
Serpian
May 26th, 2006, 10:47 AM
Yeah, what Ryn said. Talent is just a head start. People with talent are nothing without practice. And besides, no-one'a completely talentless.
That neck study is looking good.
And on seeing sci-fi films, maybe it's good that you're unbiased? Working completely off what YOU think is an armoured space-suit. Think function. it doesn't always have to be practical or functional at all, but it needs to make sense. What I mean is, you don't draw a suit which have full heavy armour only on the sides of the character, you draw one that has it on the chest to protect the vital organs. if they're going to be in space, thoy'll probably need oxygen. Again, this needn't be the stereotypical gas-tank-on-back-tubes-to-mouth-model. A belt for grenades and stuff or maybe the grenades are fastened to the arms, so you can just pick one off your shoulder? What I mean is, sci-fi suits can look anyway you want, but it's good to start of with remotely functional ones. Then you can add senseless detail or mega-shoulder-pads that wouldn't be practical in any dimension I know, but look damn cool.

hi
I recommend getting a newspaper or something, looking for figures( the sport section is always a start) and drawing them as much as you can,it should help your anatomy and your overall drawing.
Im sure you've seen artists who get their pencil, hold their arm out straight and look at what their drawing. This is a crucial skill when drawing from life, it allows you to work out proportions and sizes before making your shapes. Try drawing a couch or a table or the room with this method but first finding the size and drawing up a rectangle/square and working within the confines of that shape.
Also spend some more time on your drawings, its a lot more appealing seeing something that has had an hour working on, that a few 10 minutes practices. That said you do have some motivation and you are on 4 pages so telling you to practice isnt going to make you do any more than your doing.
With the digis i suggest you have a look at these

good stuff going one here, sometimes your lines are real nice and clean, but at other times they are not, It might be because you havent "warmed up" but keep cracking at them! also, try to focus on just one part of the body when you are doing studies, otherwise it just turns to mumbo jumbo. Try sitting down for a couple of hours and focus on the arm for example, going through everything its built up of, not just one nose and a neck, you wont get far with that!

White Rose- I got a video on perspective from my library, but I can't remember the name. Lots of good stuff on it on the 'net too. And transition values are the values used to blend two values. It's not a proper name, just what I call them.
Oddo- I should spend some more time on Loomis, I've really only skimmed it. It's great stuff, I should treat it as such. Thanks man!
Wow. I love unconcious sketching, brain-farts, whatever you want to call them. I'm sitting here, I've done just about nothing all day, I'm tired and unfocused, but i decide to pick up the pencil one more time. I drift off...Bam! When I get back this was on the paper. The pose suck and proportions and anatomy is off, but I love it all the same. Let's see how it looks after a good nights sleep.

The bridgeman studies are looking pretty good! It looks like you are starting to pick up some line tricks too -> Like how to use line weight to emphasize your subject, and how he uses hatches to describe form. Remember to close your forms though - when you leave little gaps in your silhouette you make the inside/outside of the subject indistinct and it flattens your forms. Remember that your lines are wrapping around the subject in 3d.
Also on some of your recent from-mind stuff your figures are looking a little flat. Again try to imagine the space around the subject, try to imagine how shapes overlap and how they shrink as they get more distant. Perspective applies to the figure too. Just as a box gets smaller the farther away it is drawn so too does the far leg or far arm of a figure. You might be suprised how far you can push the figure perspective-wise before things get wierd.
Anyway keep trying everything and building your skills. Everything you do makes you better at everything else. You've got a good mix of stuff going so far and that should really help you out later. BTW I'm trying to do another sketchbook thread; you can get there by clicking the happier of the two smilies in my sig.

June 14th, 2006, 09:29 AM
Ok cup looking at what you are working on keep the values to 5 (black and white and three middle values) <> the focal point should include all 5 values as things move back in space use fewer values <> this will create perspective in the value structure.
Thanks for bringing my thread back from the dead!
