View Full Version : Paintings you would loose a body part/pay money to see in person

This came up as I was flipping through a newly purchased spectrum 12. I came across the Narnia painting Justin Sweet did of the Ice Queen/White Witch in her polar bear pulled chariot and thought "goddamn! thats a cool painting. Then when I looked over in the information about it I discovered that it was an 80 x 34 inch oil painting!! Of course its owned by Disney so its probably tucked away in some office or something, never to be viewed in person except by the few people that happen to work around it. :upset:

The other paintings I would sacrifice a body part in order to see are Mucha's Slav Epic. Its hard to go wrong with epic 30 foot paintings.

much as I like a good painting to look at, I don't think there're any I'd lose a body part for. I might cut my hair for another 30 minutes with Waterhouse's Lady of Shalott though.

I would probably give my appendix or tonsils to see lots of paintings. But its hard to pick up a favorite. I've been wanting to see mona lisa since i was like 4 years old tho.

That is a mindbendingly impressive bit of painting in real life and it's big..

I'd choose to lose my fingernails and toenails.

I don't think there are many paintings I'd lose a limb for to see in real life. Though I'd like to meet the artists behind them and it isn't possible for a lot of the artists I get inspired by.

Id give my hands to feel the mona lisa.

In my opinion your retarded if you'd voluntarly amputate yourself to see something.

But its not actually that hard to see the mona lisa.

And is also somewhat of a dissappointment. A4 behind bullet proof glass, crowded about 6 deep of people straining to see it. I kind of looked, and thought, huh, nice. And moved on.

Im still desperatly trying to see more of sargent, because the pissing Musee d'orsi keep having their Sargents in bloody reserve. Its a conspiracy i tell thee. Time to move futher afield me thinks.

Well it was overstated to mean, what paintings would you really really like to see, but can't. Sorry I had to spell that out :dur:

I also enjoying Justin Sweet's work very much. I've seen the Narnia artwork he did in the picture books.
Some of you may also be familiar with Magic: the gathering TCG, he does quite a bit of artwork for that as well.

I've wanted to see the 'Mr Bertin' portrait by ingres for a while now. I'd be keeping my sexy body parts though..

is that one of those digital print on canvas/paintover images he does?

he does a great job of hiding the underlying photograph giclee printed on canvas.

I agree...there are better paintings in the louvre than that one...but considering what time that painting came out...yowza its one of the very best for that time.

I never understoof the big draw to the mona lisa. Like Jason said, at the time, yes, one of the very best. But why people still obsess over it now, I don't get. It's still incredibly well painted, but it persoanlly does not do anything for me.

A body part huh, the only thing I can think of is a finished painting of The Battle of Anghiari by daVinci.

An arm or leg would be a small price to pay to alter the fabric of reality.

Wow, now that is badass. The shrine thing they are carrying looks incredibly well painted. The whole piece has a very open, out door, airy kind of feel, and at the same time holds a giant mass of humanity, awesome pic Profil, I'll definatly look more of this guy up....Ok I just did, this is the guy who did that wicked portrait of Ivan the Terrible having just fatally wounded his son. Killer facial expression. Nice one

That painting was made in 1883.

I don't think they used photo reference then, or very little, which makes that painting even more remarkable.

My father have seen it in reality, it's in the Tretyakov gallery (spelling?) in Moscow. I have some book with paintings hanging in that gallery and there are some other fantastic ones.

I wouldnt give a limb to see anything, but im a Sargent, Bougereau and Velazquez junkie. Also, Mucha's Slav Epics (SOMEDAY!) and some more Caravagios.... Rembreant and Vermeers too... damn there are just too many!
