CHOW 10:
Asteroid Miner

Prospecting the belt is a lonely job for Merideth, but when it pays, it pays big.
(think of a 22nd century prospector, maybe a lone wolf, maybe part of a small crew, searching among widely scattered orbiting rocks for that mother-lode nickel-iron 'roid that'll bank mega-credits and get him/her back on station for few months... anywhere but out in the Big Lonely...) -- further desciption provided by masque

I was 15 mins late :teeth:

Edit: ECS has my vote although I don't think there were any poor entries for this round. Everyone had kickass ideas.

And Thanks Oreg for including my piece.

ok cool thanks.. are you going to reset the voting or leave the current votes as is? either way it isnt crucial, espec if youre still doing the multiple vote thing

I really enjoyed this design challenge. Great job Oregano! :)

I have to give my vote to Rascar. I don't know why but I just love his design. Though ecsdesign's entry was a dang close second.

Can we vote multiple times?

I voted for rascar, alot because of the rendering and presentation.
Good job everyone!

My Vote was split between Yutani and ecsdesign, I ultimately chose the latter.

I went for ecsdesign because of his punchy design and the atmosphere of it all. :teeth:

Rascar Capac got my vote though i have some crits on the face -- rendered too softly given the crisp, graphic strokes of most of the rest of the piece -- and the stance -- with her left foot extended and toe pointed, heel up, it seem a bit balletic for such a character and the mass of the suit. maybe something closer to a classic contrapposto would have worked a bit better?

ecsdesign's entry was also solid but the intense light source seems out of place unless depicted specifically as artificial (the sun would be very small & dim in the Belt or Oort cloud), and the drill/device seems to generate a huge amount of debris for its size, it breaks the otherwise good sense of "real future tech." the landscape also seems to perhaps borrow a lot from Armageddon, nothing wrong with that other than the film was utter dreck and used a comet to stand in for an asteroid :P (just kidding, though not much).

i also like the Jules Verne-ish flavor of Fes's piece, though her anatomy seems a bit strange --maybe an adaptation?

Oregano: just noticed this poll isn't public. is that intentional?

Close contest thus far. And we have a whole week of polling left to do!

You're right - I totally rushed it on the feet and the toe/heel thing does look very odd and unnatural....it stands out like a sore thumb (pun intended...)
I should've spent more time and rendered out gravity boots or something.

ecsdesign's entry was also solid but the intense light source seems out of place unless depicted specifically as artificial (the sun would be very small & dim in the Belt or Oort cloud), and the drill/device seems to generate a huge amount of debris for its size, it breaks the otherwise good sense of "real future tech." the landscape also seems to perhaps borrow a lot from Armageddon, nothing wrong with that other than the film was utter dreck and used a comet to stand in for an asteroid :P (just kidding, though not much).

I didnt even read the rocks as flying debris but just tiny floating asteroids as part of the BG...maybe its because its kind of dark on my screen and I just noticed that he's drilling.
As I said before, I really like the mood, the design, composition so he gets my vote

RC: the stance is really well done, nothing seems rushed or anything like that, just seems to be a tad out of character. it's a very strong piece, great use of color, and for a pic rendered in a lot of silhouetted shapes, it conveys a great sense of mass and "roundness." that's why it got my vote (probably should have said this up front).

looking back on ecsdesign's pic, i can see the intent of BG asteroids now. i guess my knowledge of astronomy informed a different impression, since the light source seemed very local and the "belt" of rocks thus looked like drill debris. also, asteroids are really very widely spaced, so much so that few if any would be visible one from another, given their size, average albedo, and separation. the extremely densely populated asteroid belt is a Hollywood goof, like sound in a vacuum.

happy new year..

regarding the bright light source in my image, it was less about actual astronomy and more about exposure and a device for mood. The rocks floating in the distance are suposed to be the belt of asteriods. I guess the jutting rock was a little cliched.

I though Masque had a unique take on the idea, i really liked his blurb. Rascar had a great piece- nice execution, i just felt the face/hair let it down a little. btw, cool shinpads. Fes had a nice fantasy feel about his piece.

I voted Rascar Capac because his work came the closest to what I had in mind when reading about an asteroid miner called meredith. And his style was very appealing.

Ecsdesign was very, very close.

Hmmm... no. It's not. I thought I clicked the little check box thingie, but curse these old (well, moderately mature? Adult? Myopic) eyes, I seem to have missed.

I wonder what I *did* click.... :x

My vote went to Masque - brilliant perspective, and very nice all around piece. Fes and esc would have been my second and third if I would have voted for multiple pieces...I forgot that was an option.

Well done to all who participated.

I voted for ecsdesign, I just fell in love with the edges of the bright reflection in the helmet. When it's this tight between great entries, that just settles it =)

Good job all of you!

Rascar Capac got my vote. Great graphic style. Fes was a close second. Very imaginative costume and enviro. IMHO the outfit just seemed a little to light and blousey for a miner.

Nice work everyone.

Sundance, thank you for the vote and the comments, and thanks also to the (unfortunately anonymous) others. ecsdesign, i can't tell where your vote went but no matter, i appreciate your comment.

this was a good ChOW round, with a good variety of approaches to the brief. well done, all.
