View Full Version : Does being an artist automatically make you a softy?

I was talking with a friend from school who, when talking about relationships and such, told me she saw me as the "artsy emotional type" and not a "hardened player" (implying my roomates).
True, I do seek a loving relationship over a lustful one, but how does this relate to my artistic ability? I was thinking about this a little and most athletes I know around here tend to be "players" just sleeping around while most artists I have met are in long term relationships. I have seen one or two in each group doing the opposite, but the majority here fit that.
We aren't that predictable, are we? I hate seeing such a thing STAMPED on artists in general, or anything sterotyped to us at all.

Dude,
Based on the way you say you live your life, it sounds like your parents raised you right. Don't get bent out of shape for having a reputation of being a nice guy. And pay no attention to labels other people try to place on you.

your friend has stereotyped you according to an antiquated notion of what an artist is.
don't sweat the labels and generalizations, that's something that you'll never escape. IGNORE IT they're nothing but bullshit.

Right now I don't see a reason to. But I agree, your parents obviously did something right, so don't sweat it.
Besides, when Johnny Dicksaroundalot is rotting from AIDS or whatever, and you're happy not rotting, you'll be happy.

I play the guitar and draw, and it's not because I'm trying to attract women(or men). I'm also an emotional guy, damn I fit the stereotype. I don't agree with that stereotype though, since people do art for a whole lotta reasons. Lots of different types of people can draw, paint or whatever.

Ok speaking of stereotypes what would you put me under? I'm play football and I wrestle for my local high school, I'm in the top of my class academically(e.g. I have almost straight A's, damn I have to pull up that B in Honors English), I'm in Pre-Calculus as a freshman, play guitar, take music theory, play D&D, draw, paint, have been programming since I was ten, and am pretty good at just about all sports.

Distracted.
In order to be a good artist you have to be focused. Usually you end up sucking at sports because you don't have enouph time if you're doing art.....if you're a good artist......basically the kids I grew up with thought artists were fags and sports made you a badass.
I was surfing my butt off, and not doing art....because I enjoyed surfing more.
Obsession plays into it too.
I took 3 semesters of Calculus.
I think I draw good......but now I suck at sports, and I wanna get better at art.

I dont get that misconception about all artists being softies...
I know more artists who are ready to beat the crap out of any living creature on this planet when they are disturbed, than artists who live the life of a tortured soul feeling sorry for their own asses.
The only ones not fucking around like rabbits (wich are very few) all claim to have a reason for "just being friends" with the type of girls any man would hump in a milisecond:
"no time, no motivation and I have better things to do"
... meaning that these guys barely sleep and spend most of their time training their artistic skills/ working.
So from my experience, I'd rather think that being an artist makes you more of an obsessed psychopath or a womanizer than a complete sissie...
just my oppinion ;)
Cheers,
Etienne
P.S.: I count myself among those obsessed psychos ;)

Hahaha, ooooohhhh yess. >=) Though I haven't been that bad lately.
I do agree that being part of too many things can be a distraction. I personally could never really stick to a sport (even if I loved it, like tennis) because I'd rather sit down on the grass and draw than to run about on it. So instead, I go to the gym or exercise at home (noone has to wait for me that way).
And as for being a softie......maybe....I dunno - I've never had a bf. -_-
You guys should consider yourselves lucky - girls are (or seem to be) more attracted to arty types than guys! >__<

I think theres definately a difference between an artist and your every day joe schmoe. Us artists see things differently, and notice things other people rarely notice. We thrive off of aesthetics, so, i think that really has a major impact on who we are. I dont know if that makes us soft or hardasses, but it definately makes us who we are.
My thoughts are that there are certain kinds of people who have their lives cut out for them. All my life I've been independant, introverted, and generally quiet. Sure, I tried my hand at pretty much every sport there is, and sucked out loud at all of them. Social physical activity really doesnt excite me. I prefer solo-activites, like bowling, or parkour. OOH, ideas: Perhaps theres only two types of people: Those who enjoy physical activity, and those who prefer mental catharsis. Or, perhaps the division is people who prefer to interact and be part of a team (social/extrovert), versus those who fly solo(introvert)? This would answer alot of questions. Myself, I prefer mental activities, by myself.

Honestly, based on your posts from various other threads you seem to be more of a womanizer than a softy, haha =P No offense meant, but for someone as shy as me, you seem to really flaunt your sexual endeavours, quite openly.
EDIT: Its just seeing them all posted at the same time really seemed like you were using your art to bed women like, weekly, maybe even daily. If you use art to form a relationship and blahblahblah, every few months or whatever I guess you could be a softy, but it really seemed to be a frequent activity for you, drawing naked women and after a few pencil strokes on the page sleeping with them =P

I seriously think you hit the nail on the head. Does explain the massive social differences we see in these groups, thus leading to the stereotyping of artists in general.

From what I've seen, most artists tend to be introverted people, but whoa, put a bunch of artists together and poof! They knatter away like crazy!
Social skills come later - mainly because they're needed by then to get higher up the ladder.

I have 2 cousins one of which is 21 that has cervical cancer, female obviously. Cervical cancer is generally spread around by promiscuity, of men anyway.

So, I don't know if it's a good idea to think of relationships as sexual conquests anyway.

You should be careful about spreading information you clearly don't understand. While I am not about to promote promiscuity, you have taken medical information out of context and lowered it to the level of dangerous and irresponsible "urban legend."
The causes of cancer is only barely understood by those on the front lines doing research and I would hardly consider you an expert on the subject.

The risk factors for cervical cancer are:
Multiple sexual partners and/or partners who have multiple partners.
That's why I put that link there.
Can only go by what I read......besides, I have 2 cousins with cervical cancer. Don't you think this has been scrutinized a great deal within my family?

Don't you think this has been scrutinized a great deal within my family? If you read further down in the "Prevention" section it says:To reduce the chances of cervical cancer, girls less than 18 years of age should avoid sexual activity or always use condoms. HPV infection causes genital warts. These may be barely visible or several inches across.
If a woman sees warts on her partner's genitals, she should avoid intercourse. To further reduce the risk of cervical cancer, women should limit the number of their sexual partners, avoid sexually promiscuous partners, and discontinue any tobacco use. Condoms may help prevent the transmission of HPV.I will admit that multiple sexual partners may increase the risk of coming in contact with someone who could introduce HPV infection but does this prove promiscuity causes cervical cancer? Hardly.
I don't want to minimize what has happened to your cousins and your family but dispensing medical advice without a medical degree is just plain irresponsible.

Artists are usually smarter, grasp more things, think more, and see more things than the common person. What matters most to artists are things that most people are completely oblivious about. i.e. environmental issues, health, vegetarian/veganism, etc. So under the great big scope of the average american, priorities seem to be money, cars and getting laid. And not following these modern american principles, and actually giving a shit like your girlfriend makes you a pussy. And what really sucks is that nice guys finish last. Fact of life that will continue forever.

You might be surprised at how many artists on these forums would disagree with you in a discussion on environmental issues, health and vegetaianism (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57446&highlight=vegetarian).
As far as nice guys finishing last, people who put success and career ahead of all other things like family and relationships often do succeed but pay a heavy price for the priorities they choose.

I disagree. The majority of the "artists" at my school dont fall into those categories at all. We like money, cars, and getting laid. Many could give a shit about the environment or current political going ons. Artists are just as likely to be assholes as they are to be saints.
Generally, I'd think you would see these types of people in groups of artists who are actually trying to act like an artist should act in their minds instead of being themselves. Sort of like the film school geeks who start dressing all in black and wearing berets once they make a film.

"Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)"
By Don McLean
Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.
Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.
Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.
Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.
For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.
Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.
Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...
God, how I hate that song...
Van Gogh would have hated it too.
