This was part of my Visual Dev Class portion of Super Thursday. The assignment was a rendition of Fahrenheit 451. i was part of the "PROPS and Vehicles" group..which was a huge change for me...
Our Design influences/motifs were based primarily in
50's streamline...and primarily on the works of Raymond Lowey....
this is the Beetle/Jetcar Design and color by me

Our Group (Props and Vehicles) was charged with the primarily design of the infamous Mechanical Hound......the original description of the hound in the book apparently was written by the same guy who designed the overlord....the hound in the book had like 8 legs and underneath each foot were 8 smaller spider like extensions...a total of 64 little legs....
We decide not to do follow that aspect of the design...anyways.....Our instructors wanted the hound not to be scary in the typical big teeth sense..he wanted a more refined image of horror...we went with an insect like frame and an adjusted hockey mask like face...the primary designer of this rendition was Yeong Hao (i think i spelled that right?) with input from the rest of the group and instructors
and the painting was done by me.....

you have rendering talent no doubt about it.
But since I am an avid classic VW Beetle fan and owner, I have to ask if this is what it is to be a jet car of? if it is; then you might want to add some elements to it that make it recognizable as a beetle and not a 50 Ford, or Studebaker. the chrome bullet nose looks identical to a Stude or Ford.
or just change the name, that might be easier. because the illustration is cool.

ugh...design by commitee...How scary...Still, my compliments to Yeong Hao on the cool robot, and your paint technique is pretty nice, although I would suggest losing the residue yellow in the background. Is there any particular reason Yeong Hao couldn't paint these himself?

Sean: i asked Yeong if he wanted to paint it...but he declined....so it was up to me.....i believe that Yeong added that yellow "glow" im pretty sure i didnt paint that i didnt paint that in....could be wrong tho....yea it was a real challege workin in a large group.....but i guess that was the point of it...a small taste of the real world...

Mong: dude i wasnt keepin secrets!! u saw this at super thursday....anyways those ideations i did blow....but wat u gonna do when u only have 3 weeks to get everything together for Super thurs?
Mcotie: in the book the Jet cars are refered to as Beetles....im pretty sure that it wasnt referencing the VW....but i did try to incorporate the VW's "dome" like roof in the design....the nose i got from a 50's mercedes i believe....? i could be wrong....gosh its bothering me now...i have the picture of the car in my head.....now that i think of it..couldnt be a mercedes....ill find out..

The forward orientation and round shape of the eyes on the Hound bother me. A swept-back predatory shape might fit better. Think streamlining, like a 40s or 50s locomotive.

predators' eyes are on the front of their heads, prey have eyes on the sides/swept back, so that they can see danger better....

phu - you missed free beer night at lucky baldwins! glad to see you posting these. i'm surprised you haven't said that your group was heavily art-directed. get the rest of your group to post their stuff... the firetruck you guys came up with is pretty damn cool.

How did I miss this thread?
I love the Deco designs for the beetle and stomach pump.
Amazing designs.
I would have really like to see the hound in that same type of 30's vibe though.
F451 is dear to my heart. For a HighSchool project I chose to illustrate this book. I've always wanted to go back and see how I would approach that project now.
Are there designs for locations or the flying bug thing at the end?

Adam- didnt know that...the thing about predator eyes...but what about sharks? or are their eyes slightly forward too?
Seb- Yea i know, we were heavily art directed, but honestly that was only on the fire truck..and maybe on the hound......but everything else we just had to bash out...towards the end..we just didnt have anytime for art direction......and i really didnt feel like going to Baldwins...after Jess' party...dude...did he make an ass out of himself again? u know who im talkin about...
plam- thanks...when are u going to post more of ur stuff?
nekokaiju- Yea i agree with u on the hound...we had some designs that were alot more inline with the other props and vehicles...but they werent accepted..for some reason...and we were running out of time!....
You should go back and try to design some of that stuff...its alot of fun...especially if u dont have to do it for anyone else...some of that stuff is just so cool...we were supposed to design the futuristic match thing...that supposedly could be lit over a million times...
Yes there were designs for locations and characters and entire scenes...not to brag but i think our class did an awesome job...considering the amount of time we had..
Seb was part of the Environment group...his group did some awesome stuff....
Hey SEB post some of that stuff man...
