Concept design of a crazy looking fish. This fish make Paranas look like gold fish.
Its sculpted with scupy, super sculpy, green sculpy and black sculpy. All mixed together to acheive this color.
Check back soon to see the colored version.
Please let me know what you guys think before I bake this bad boy.

I think this is a great piece of work...lives up to the title.
Before baking I might think about smoothing the lines under the jaw. The lines for texture don"t seem to be smoothed enough to flow as part of the skin, it seems like it was scratched.
Does that make sense or am I the only one?

I understand what you are saying.
what I am trying to acomplish with the bottom of the mouth is to have it look like tough leather like skin that is textured and has lots of cracks and folds.
Like I said, I am not done with it yet. I still have some minor work as far as detail and smoothing out.
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it.

hope you dont take offence from that :)
looks like something that swims in a pond not deep under the sea.
its amazing that a creature looking like that could survive the humans.
hope you show more of the progress. coloring and such.

Pretty sweet. Is there any way to make the teeth sharper? Or can you do that once it's baked with a file or something?

Well, here it is. I just painted it today. I think this was the fastest sculpture painting I did In my life. I think I rushed it a little bit. The colors look off a bit because of the lighting. I hope you guys like it. If you dont I might just have to repaint it.

I really like the metallic look.
It would look kool if you had more pink flesh tones in the mouth and under the neck.
But I guess fish don't look that pink inside ???

well... its nice, but it could be better...
i think a orange/rubyred for the main body, with blick spots would be good for this fish! but thats my oppinion...

I like it overall, but I have a few crits that may or may not help out, it's meant to help though.
I love the sculpt, but the paint is just a little too bland as compared to the complexity of the whole thing.
That may sound harsh, but I think that with a little more time painting it, I think you'll have a real winner here.
To me, it appears like you did a base coat only, I know it's not, but you actually have a good base coat
going on there.
If you took some acrylics and made a nice watered down 'wash', using lots of different colors that go good
together, it might come to life more.
You only want about 5%-10% color to come through, so don't make it too thick, washes are best thinner.
Think of flesh, or meat, and think of something deep in the ocean that is really scary.
If you used a wash of a medium to dark purple, sprayed clear on it to seal it, then continue on with other
washes, each one sealed to make sure you don't 'wash off' the last wash, it'll come to life.
Use a yellow wash...
Then a brown one.
A pinkish colored one, and so on.
Use the colors of your choice, I'm just trying to suggest some.
Save each wash, then give it as many washes of the same color on top of another...
Like for instance, if you just gave it a brown wash, then a pink one, try the yellow one again over that, then
continue that using the different colors.
What you will end up with will be a 'living' creature, it will have layer after layer of coolor that looks as though
it is alive, 'cause you can't really tell how it was done.
It's kind'a hard to explain, but if you play around with it, I think you can really make something here.
Also, since you spent so much time sculpting it, which by the way is a pretty good job, you should at least
spend enough time to paint it as realistic as possible, or paint it a single type color like a bronze.
In my opinion, a bronze wouldn't fit the sculpt, but it migh look better than a "quick paint job" as you said.
You probably already suspected that it wasn't your best, or you wouldn't have mentioned that you'd redo it. heheh
Maybe you don't like to paint, but the little things like the eyes and things you might not notice, take away
from an otherwise very interesting sculpt.
For details like that, buy a set of the Opti-Visors, or the cheap brand that Harbor Freight sells, you can have
those on your head and work really close when sculpting small stuff, and painting small stuff, or very detailed
stuff, they're really worth it.
The teeth could be yellow tinged, at the base of each one you could add a brownish red, that would bring in
the creep factor.
The mouth, as has been said is needing something, it lacks the life that it needs.
Again, if you add colors to it, like reds, yellow tinges, and purples, and a heaveier wash of a dark reddish
black, it will set off the mouth and really, really come alive.
Make the eyes seen better, add a darker area around the eyes, not black, but maybe reddish, with a blue
tint, or make it up.
Slight colors 'barely' there is the key.
Most fins are see-through, so you could give it an illusion that makes it look that way.
Make them grayish/yellow, and with the contrast around them being more colorful and slightly darker, it
will give it the appearance of it being more transparent.
Paint each fin spine a darker color too, that will not only add to it overall, it'll add a lot more depth and realism.
You could also add a gradient that goes from a greenish to an orange in the soft fin parts, from front to back.
Also, although it doesn't make any sense, all taxidermy places always use a high gloss clear on their fish,
I know, underwater they would *NOT* (EDIT) be shiny, but in our minds, we think "shiny", it not only brings life, it enhances
the color overall too, better saturation, the shinier the better too.
I know this is a lot, but for that sculpt, you'd be cheating yourself if you didn't give it a proper paint job, and
as long as I have been watching this, you'd be cheating us too.
I mean ALL of the above in the best possible way, just trying to help, and these are just ideas, and who's to
say they're good ones, it's just that I hate to see it end here, it's much too good to leave it as is.
That's an opinion anyway...
heheh
Thanks, and I really like what you have done though.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my fish.
I really love the ideas that you gave me.
I had a vision of the final fish in my head when I started to paint it. I have the tendensy to rush through my artwork when Iam so excited to have the final piece. I also was running out of air for my air brush...lol. Not make anymore excusses but I will try to repaint it soon.

Great sculpt! Two minor crits-- Having looked at smellybug's sculpting howto, he talks about how to get different degrees of opacity in things like teeth-- the teeth on your fish are such a draw for the eyes, to have a little bit of light shine trough them would really make this POP! That may be the "life" that recrisp is looking for (used to make teeth for dentures and such, you'd be surprised how much transparency they have). The only other thing, and this could be just me personally, I's like to have seen the scales rounded toward the rear a touch more. The texture of the scales themselves is perfect, but they look a bit "quilted". Does that make any sense? Looks fantastic though, and I don't think I'll be doing any swimming anytime soon! :)

Hey people,
Thanks guys for the comments.
I really want to repaint this thing but i just havent had the time to get back into it. I wish this is what i did for a living but im a graphic designer and that takes all my time away from all the cool things that i want to focus on. Oh well, have to pay the bills.
Any way. I used some model kit paints and some airbrush paints on this fish, kind of worked with what i had at the time. I know its going to be a bitch to take of all the paint and maybee break some teeth and sharp points on it in the proccess. Does anyone have pointers on how to go about doing this.
i have very little patientce, so lets hope i dont f#$@ this up.

how did i miss this thread? your sculpt is amazing- i love the detail of the fins and mouth.I do like the paint job you've done but i agree with everyone's coments- your sculpt is superior to your paint job and those few extra details would make it perfect, hope it goes well. :)

Man that fish is creepy-scary!
Painting though.. What the person above said with how to paint it... as far as colors go, you may want to look at some deep sea fish...
(I'm assuming this is deep sea - it kind of looks that way with the large teeth and huge eyes)
Fish like these:
http://www.imagequest3d.com/catalogue/deepsea/images/l013_jpg.jpg
http://www.imagequest3d.com/catalogue/deepsea/images/l031_jpg.jpg
http://www.imagequest3d.com/catalogue/deepsea/images/l037_jpg.jpg
If you look, they all have really warm colors in the mouth and then their bodies are as cold as death.
The delima with doing a deep sea creatures (if you want to keep it relative) is that they are in total darkness and therefore, like mole rats, don't have any need for eyes, thus are blind. And those eyes do look cool.
If you want to do more of a vicious fish, it would probably be colored something like a barracuda or piranha:
http://www.johneasley.com/gallery/albums/Underwater/Barracuda.sized.jpg
http://delivery.gettyimages.com/xc/dv1702011.jpg?v=1&c=CFW&k=2&d=74DAE4A9522E9CE516BE9C78A8B33867
http://delivery.gettyimages.com/xc/10050225.jpg?v=1&c=CFW&k=2&d=449109E24F92386B3B194EB83F5C8366
So, in general, really warm color for the mouths, very death-like cold colors on the tops, and some warm on the body (warm belly, too - like you've already done) if you want it to live close to the surface.

that is really awsome man. i love the fine details you have put in. great work all around from sculpt to paint. any chance you could explain some of the armature you having going on underneath it all? particularly the spikes/fins coming off and how much of the mass is actually sculpy. anyway, again that thing is badass. great work!
sakona
February 28th, 2007, 10:50 AM
well, everything that you see on the fish is sculpy.
i used wires and foil paper for the inside skeleton.
i baked the teeth and the fins seperate than attached them to the body.
that keeps me from bendind, puting finger prints and scratches on the detailed stuff. Its imposible to sculpt the sharp teeth and fin while everything is soft.
So, i plan my sculpt and work in stages to make it easier and faster.
