Along the Gangster Genre:

State of Grace - Gary Oldman is great and the final scene in the bar is a work of art.

King of New York - Christopher Walken & Lawrence Fishburn MAKE this movie

True Romance - Funny, exciting, great dialogue. Sammuel L Jackson's shortest role.

Resevoir Dogs - Greatest dialogue in film.

Visual:

Brazil - Terry Gilliam is a master of environments

The Mission - Great story, excellent settings in the Amazon

I'll think of more and post later.

"thirteenth floor" is pretty much great.

well, the alien movies (not no. 4 obviously) but you should read the books. they're so much better... (and i mean not the usual jump in quality between book and film)

umm... pulp fiction of course. basically everything tarantino. jacky brown is superb.

cityworker: i watched the film in class, my lecturer has a habit of showing us quirky diverse films. i studied music for a while, and the music as well as the narration were so meaningful, its kinda hard to explain. the appreciation, the longing, the disgust expressed of the main character's voice was top notch. i cant really put my finger on it, but i think its most probably the quirky laughter of mozart...lol:D

cityworker
April 17th, 2003, 01:57 PM
lol...
I think F. Murray Abraham did a fantastic job in portraying a man who hated Mozart so much, but at the same time acknowledged and respected his work. I think that film defined the word: jealously perfectly. That laugh was icing on the cake.:D

Goo
April 17th, 2003, 02:04 PM
i dont know if its truly jealousy. at first it was admiration, then envy, then jealousy and bitterness. but in mozart's last moments, the feeling was a bit muted. there was nothing save for the conductor's frantic scribblings of mozart's dictation. you could see the passion. perhaps there was a slight tinge of regret on the part of the conductor when mozart died..but thats just my guess. love the part where they made mozart conducting the piece with real orchestra playing in the bg, whereas the conductor could only hear the 'bom boms' of mozart.

yeah, and the part of the narration,"a little circus monkey", and showing mozart as a boy bindfolded and perfroming like a circus monkey..:ahha:

Well they both flopped money wise, but Red Planet was actually a pretty fun movie while Mission to Mars was utter crap...

Right...
I dont care if you like Anime or not, these films are great for outstanding storytelling alone.

Jin-Roh
Spirited Away

While I like Akira, people who arnt really into anime wouldnt enjoy it I dont think.

Smeagol71
April 18th, 2003, 08:50 PM
I agree with Tyboogie and probably most others on this thread...whether you like anime or not, go to the source.

SEVEN SAMURAI!

But I have to disagree with Toaster. I just saw Sprited Away about a week ago and was completely dissapointed. While it was gorgeous to look at and very visually captivating, the story was almost non-existent and hung by a mere thread the whole movie. No sweeping themes, no twists, not cohesion. Sheesh, they didn't even throw in any fairy-tale cliches'. I mean "No Face" was floating around in the background and a "main" character for 3/4 of the movie and I dare anyone to fully explain what his purpose was as a character. Really a dissapointment.

But, that's just my opinion. I'll have to come up with my top ten...gonna' have to think about this one for awhile.

o_O

You went to a kids movie looking for twists and a complicated story?
Not all good stories have to be intricate and enigmatic.

Also note that I did not say it had the greatest story, although I still think it had a very good story for a kids movie,
Storytelling is using what you have very well which is what it did to a t.

(This is also just my opinion.)

Another good 'bad' movie:

Red Sonja (it even has Ahnold!)

When the love interest is about to develop and Sonja plays hard to get: "If you only yield to a conqueror, prepare to be conquered!"

Lol.

Another one of that calibre is in Terminal velocity ( O_o ) : "Why is it that everytime a girl walks into the room you start thinking with your little head"

Blade Runner has not yet been mentioned i believe.
I have another one:

>>> The Fly <<<

Once upon a time in the west. If you got some time on your hands and have a not restless butt.

BTW the Great Escape is fun to watch

Edit: I vote for Lono's as the best list. But no Bill murray for me. Ok, Ghostbusters but thats childhood sentiment for me (remember playing it on the C64 with that incredible music tadadada dada... dadadadada... ) (woops - sorry ;/)

Erik
April 19th, 2003, 01:40 PM
BTW: is it just me that gets bored to death by Quentin Tarantino? (Except Pulp Fiction) I mean, just shouting Fuck a 100 times and shooting around a couple of 100 kgs of 9 milli rounds does not make a good movie in my opinion...

I notice a tendency in my own preference for movies that have no or minimal shooting/fighting/etc in the sense of violence and gore just to have violence and gore. I can't stand car chases anymore and i really really really cannot stand this anymore:

END SCENES where the good guy gets insanely beat up by bad guy in derelict factory/power plant/wh'ever whilst the bad guy explains his narro plotline in depth - the good guy finally wins.

Here three examples to counter my own preferences:
1. chase: Bourne Identity. Now that is a chase ;-) and Goldeneye - the chase with the T80 is just absurd.
2. end scene: ok this one's crappy. Blade runner
3. shooting: Leon. That is how it is done.

So i'm confused or looking for originality/quality or something ridiculous as that...

kaini
April 19th, 2003, 01:43 PM
@Lono: haha man, yes I'm a retard sometimes. I just can't stand stuff like Spiderman, LOTR, Titanic etc, ahh man you know what I mean. Oh and your list is fine btw.

so basically your saying that every movie thats not made in japan is crap? ...I do ?

Lono
April 19th, 2003, 02:43 PM
kaini: ok, so maby was too quick to jump down your throat. :D
yah,, i agree with you about Titanic,, and spiderman was just ok, but not great in my opinion. i did however love LOTR though.. i dont think theres anything wrong with a very well done adventure movie. especially one with characters and a universe as compelling as LOTR. now i wont be going to see The Core any time soon.
But,, to each his own.
i guess i misenterprited what you were saying in your last post. sorry..

the reason i made the Japanese comment is because the only movies you listed were forign.. i was being a smartass.

OK so some "different" movies NEED to be added to the list. Here are a few that are off the beaten path and worth the rent:

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover (UNRATED VERSION) - Bizzaro film designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
The Krays - The brothers from Spandau Ballet (80's band for those scratching heads) Playing the true story of nasty gangsters in Engand.
Love & A .45
Barfly - Mickey Rourke as alcoholic/poet/writer Charles Bukowski.
The Big Blue
Cripple Masters - OK, One of the funniest Kung Fu movies I have EVER seen. It is so bad I had to watch it 2-3 times.
Raging Bull
Drugstore Cowboy - I DARE anyone to drink any alcoholic beverage whenever they say "Bob".
Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness - Ash is my hero.

I'll have to look in my collection for some more.

A lot of films I really like have already been mentioned. Here are a few more I think are worth checking out:

The Reflecting Skin
A disturbing film by Philip Ridley about a little boy thinks his neighbor is a vampire. This gorgeous film was made to look like an Andrew Wyeth painting. It isn't on DVD as far as I know. Check it out if you find it on VHS. I would love to see them release this widescreen on DVD.

The Man Who Wasn't There
The Coen's offbeat take on film noir. Excellent script and characters. Plenty of great plot twists. Gorgeous black and white cinematography by Roger Deakins.

Heavenly Creatures
Still my favorite Peter Jackson film. Inventive camerawork and direction, great script and performances. The longer, original NZ cut is the only version out on DVD right now available in widescreen. The shorter, international cut is Jackson's preferred version (I like it better, too) but it, unfortunately, is currently only available in pan and scan. (Write Miramax!)

Seconds
This John Frankenheimer classic from 1966 is like a feature length version of a Twilight Zone episode. Features great creepy black and white cinematography by James Wong Howe. Its kind of a sci-fi /thriller /drama about an old bank president who pays a secret organization to get his youth back.

Following
Chistopher Nolan's 16mm feature debut is a great example of no-budget guerilla filmaking. I personally liked it better than its larger budget followup Memento. Great twist ending.

A Sign From God
Greg Watkins' quirky indie comedy loosely based on real life experiences of frequent collaborator Caveh Zahedi. About an eternally optimistic indie filmaker having a really, really bad day trying to keep it together with his girlfriend. If you like this, you might also enjoy these Zahedi/Watkins collaborations: "A Little Stiff" and "I Don't Hate Las Vegas Anymore"

Henry Fool
Hal Hartley's strangely funny story about a garbage man who is inspired by an ex-con to write poetry. Not currently on DVD, but you might find it on VHS.

One Hour Photo
Robin Williams put in a suprisingly creepy performance as a one-hour photo developer who develops an obsession with a suburban family. Mark Romanek directed this unconventional thriller which features a really excellent visual style.

It is waking life. thanks!

I just bought pi and I liked it. I had seen it mentioned here, and had always wanted to see it. It's a diff. type of movie, which is good, and I enjoyed the independant movie feel it had.

Gracias, gorditos! ;)

oh, yes... mary shelley's frankenstein. (this movie rocks, especially cuz robert deniro is frankenstein)

I'd have to go with:

Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Red Dragon
SE7EN
Fight Club
Snatch
Virus (awesome gory robots.)
Tears of the Sun
Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket

(edit)

Oh and Pi. it's about a mathematician who, i guess, wants to find all the numbers in pi, and then he starts to take speed and other drugs to keep himself awake, then he starts hallucinating. like there's a part where he sees a brain sitting on the subway tracks, and there's a train coming. then, he pokes the brain with a pen, and then he's inside of the train. then he pulls out and he's on the tracks and it's closer. creepy.

Hey. A freind of mine just made me watch really good French movie called "Le Pacte des Loups" or "The brotherhood of the Wolf." It's a sort of monster movie that takes place in pre-revolutionary France . A royal Taxidermist and his native American partner are trying to hunt down a creature that's been terrorising a country side. The story might sound familiar but it's very original and full of really strange twists and a great creature design...and Monica Bellucci.

here's the website.

jwo; You're one of those people who let the rave scene in the Matrix reloaded ruin the entire movie for you, aren't you?

You liked Brotherhood of the Wolf... Okay. that's a relief...Wait! You didn't like the the Reloaded!? :moon:

When will people realize that the only thing you need to make a good movie is kung fu? We live in such backwards times.

The 'rave' scene in the Matrix did ruin part of the movie.

As did -for most people- the monologue of the Architect.

Nonetheless i've seen it 5 times now and it is a good movie. The depth in the story is more hidden than in the first one though. I like all the hints and the omens within the movie and for revolutions. The story can go many ways from here.

Well... it's still a good movie.

Not good: X-Men 2. Even with Famke Jansen. It has its moments but also parts that are very weak and obvious.

I agree with cityworker; I never get tired of watching 'Goonies'...

...I also put 'Labyrinth' and 'Neverending Story' at the top of my list. I love 80's fantasy movies.

I am also obsessed with the FIRST 'Matrix' movie. No, not 'Reloaded' or 'Revolutions'--those two sucked stinky ass and made me lose my faith in the Wachowskis altogether.

And yeah, 'Run Lola Run' as well as 'Life is Beautiful' are my favorite foreign films, though I never get to see that many of them. I like 'Shaolin Soccer' too--hilarious!
