How many brushes are available in the tool bar of photoshop. And how many are used in the painting?

I'm aware of several dozens till over a hundred different brushes for photoshop CS, and the possebility to define/create your own brushes (just go to the help/tutorial section on how to do that)

Yep, there is basically an infinite amount of custom brushes available for PS.

For paintings; however, it depends on what you're aiming for. For most digipaints you can get away with a simple Hard Round default brush.
If you're looking for textures and helpful brushes for quick paints, you can either make your own or download some off the net.
