ROUND #9
:right: PLEASE CONSOLIDATE YOUR WIPS AND FINALS INTO YOUR FIRST POST.
:right: CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL.
-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24th – give or take.
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------
A BOY, A CLAUS, AND AN ELF
Timmy’s world has been destroyed.
Timmy won the world wide competition for the much coveted trip to Santa’s Workshop. His entry, like the billions of other entries from the world over, was why he wanted peace on earth, what he’d do if he were the President of the United Nations, and why wired hair dachshunds are the best dogs in the world.
Upon arriving at the North Pole, Timmy found that “Santa’s Workshop” was, in fact, an industrial wasteland of name brand products being mass produced by megalithic multinational merchandising subsidiary companies handed no-bid contracts by Santa, Inc. Items "crafted" in Santa’s sweatshops hadn’t seen native workers in years, the workforce having either been imported from warmer regions or, in most cases simply outsourced. The native elf population was all but forgotten, disenfranchised and living in hovels, getting drunk on eggnog and selling black market “candy” canes just to survive on the seedier edges society. Santa’s Village, the sprawling metropolis of loose morals, iffy ethics, high prices, and merrily twinkling Christmas lights, loomed over all.
Santa had sold out.
--------
Chose one, two or all three characters:
1. Santa the Sell Out
2. Timmy, just off the plane.
3. A displaced Elf worker.
-------------------
Happy Holidays everyone. Be safe, be creative, and have fun.

wow. 3 characters in 1 round...
worries,worries,worries.
-if i do 1 - that`s no good. no one here will do JUST 1, common...
-if i do 2 - that`s no good either. if i do 2 why stop there? why didn`t i do 3?
-if i do 3 - that`s no good also: 3 characters+ the deadline+ my day job + the missis & i "quality time" = poor executed works due to lack of hours in the day.
plus - what will be the poll judging process?
i mean - how could a "1 santa+1 elf" be judged appose to
a "1 timmy+ 1 santa"?
or "1 elf" appose to "1 santa+1 timmy+ 1 elf"?
also - how come there always happen to be a shit-head with a camera wherever a disaster or a terrible thing is occuring?
(damn humanity is just a huge latrine.)

Chuck, you worry too much. and that worries me :nohope: :teeth: It's like a McDonald's combo pack, pick whichever combination works best for you!
ParkerD, I actually did see the Santarchy news item on cnn, but believe it or not, *after* I had the description down for this. Besides, there's not much of a connection between Santa rioters and Santa the Sell Out other than that they wear red and are both grumpy grinchy ways of dealing with the over commercialization of the holidays. *But*, I did, briefly, think about changing the description.

Some great stuff coming through! Ho ho ho! Chuck, mate - first you made me laugh, and then I got a strange but pleasant sensation when I saw your second pic! :)
Don't think I'll get anything done for this weeks topic. Last Man Standing is taking up my time and I want to get something done for the Puppet thingy as well, so I'll watch happily from the sidelines on this one!

Jska, I really like your progress shot...especially the addition of the "wired haired dachshund". Your Santa kind of reminds me of my dad...creepy.

Really great Tiegrob! I like that a lot (especially the wiener dog). I'm very jealous of your jaw dropping line quality :jawdrop: .
I've called mine done too...I lost about four hours work on it this morning, and then got banished to my Neanderthal dial-up...so that'll do it for me.
Edit for extra crits...
Trollboy: I think the beret is great! Makes Santa look a bit militant, but now he's got down to business, so that is a great take on it. The only crit I'd have on the composition is the skyline, of course if they are at the airport...the factories maybe that far off. I look forward to seeing it in color...if you were going to do that...
Azrael: I really like the mood in your piece...makes me think "Santa gone Kingpin of Crime". I'd try to reduce the size of his hands if you can...right now it looks like he could fit his entire head in the palm of his hand. I know you are doing some dramatic foreshortening, but it just seems a bit much to me.
Azrael
December 23rd, 2005, 08:43 PM
Thanks Sundance. I was going for the Kingpin feel so I appreciate the comment. The original sketch had two elf henchmen standing behind to his sides, but I couldn't find the time to render them. He also had hair at one point but looked a little too much like Kenny Rogers.

Dude that comment almost made me fall out of my chair. Glad you knew when to fold 'em, he's much better sans hair.
JEFF! That is a sweet elf design...very nice!

@sundance: Thanks for the crit. i didnt know what to put in for the environment... so i went with that kinda lame skyline. I need to work harder on my environments. I do want to colour tho, and with not much time left, i'll probably leave it.
I like the evil elf in your pic, with the sharpened candy cane weapon. I think you can improve on the hands tho. their anatomy if off. also, santa isnt looking at the elf, but just in front of it.
@Jska: No crits for you. I think its really good. Cant wait to see it finished.
@tiegrob: I really like yours so far. The only crit i have is the railing on the ramp. Maybe with colour it will look different, but right now it has that growing out of timmy's shoulder effect. maybe if it ended before him or continued on the other side? Anyway i hope you have time to colour it
Teigrob
December 24th, 2005, 01:34 AM
Thanks Sundance! Line quality and animals are about the only things I'm good at...
Sorry Trollboy...no colour. This was last minute! I'd correct the ramp thing too - good observation! - but unfortunately, me and the drawing are in two different places. >:| Next time. And next time I'll colour my pic just to show you all what a lousy colourist I am! Honestly guys, my skills as a colourist go as far animation and that's it. I ain't no illustrator, and I never claimed to be.
