heh, i was gunna post some ideas of i'd come up with so far, but photobucket is undergoing maintenance...... oh well, i'll edit them in here later

anywayz, the point to this post was to say that anyone is welcome to post their WIP's if they want to, but they are certainly not mandatory

cgfuller64, your welcome to join if you want, keep in mind that there won't be any "special consideration" for you entering late. that being said there is still heaps of time to get an entry in.....

that brings me to the question of judging.....?!? i'm still pretty new around here, so.....umm.....what do you normally do for judging things such as this?

thanks

EDIT: heres my WIP's, so far just ideas....

Ok Guys, here are some wip shots. Ignore the darkness at the sides of the pencil images. The paper I drew my sketch on is larger than my scanners image area so there are some scanning issues that show up when I bump the contrast to see my bluelines.

So far I'm extremely happy with this piece. I'm trying some things I've never done before. For example making custom texture brushes. (Huge thanks to Mike Corriero for his tutorial!! :teeth: )

OK on to the images

This is an initial scan about halfway through my penciling stage. I laid down the basic form with non-repro blue pencil and then went back in with an 2H pencil to tighten it up.

And here are the finshed pencils...

Once I had the linework scanned in I began working on painting the image. Never having used the texture brush I started painting with it first which I now realise does not work so well... :^^;: So I switched back to a normal brush and started laying down my color planes. I've noticed that my edges are usually kind of hazy when I color my images so this time around I'm using only a hard edge brush and blending with the smudge tool (which I'm still getting the hang of...)

Now that I had the head about where I wanted it, I moved on to the torso. This area has less surface detail than the head did so I may have to go back and do some more work on it once I get closer to the end of the project...

Anyway that's where I'm at as of now. I know what your thinking, he doesn't look very tribal. But rest assured he will be "tribal-ized" once he has been rendered. Besides I'm still trying to decide what kind of culture to base him on. The initial impulse is to go either Southeast Asian or African with the feel. However I'm thinking of maybe bringing in some other influences to make something more fantastical. I'd love any to hear anythoughts you guys might have.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As for you guys posts here are my suggestions if you are interested...

Styler - Good start. I can see you have a vision of what you are wanting. It appears that you are doing a "tribal" character in the modern sense. I like initial tattoo ideas. You might check online for some reference photos or look into some tattoo magazines for ideas. Another option would be to research traditional tattoo designs and then modernize them.

Kronos - I don't know which idea I like better. The guy withthe Kopesh swords is a cool idea, but everyone loves monkeys. :P

cgfuller64 - I like what you have so far. The only thing that sees odd at this stage is the sword. It has some weird angles in the blade and it's flat texture sticks out quite abit compared to the rest of the piece.

Keep up the good work guys! :teeth:

HOT DAMN CRØW!!!! i really like the look of that!!!! the arms i think are especially awesome, thanks for showing you process aswell, blue pencil is wicked!

right, obviosly, i gotta get my ass into gear and get somthing together....
this is still really an idea, but i think i'm going with it....
being the one who made this thread, i don't know if i've kept this "tribal" enough..... but i don't care.....SCREW YOU ALL!!!!

cgfuller64, i like how this is coming along, that sucks that you don't have a tablet, but it seems to be giving your work a very unique style. bet your begging for santa to bring you a tablet though....:teeth:

can't wait to see everones, this has become a bit bigger than i thought it might, GREAT!!!!

also, anyone know how we judge this.....heh, anybody?

It's tribal enough for me so far. I'd look at your pose a bit though. His left foot looks like it's going to hook on his right leg. (Don't worry I have that same problem all the time :^^;: )

Something you might try is have a friend pose for you or as a back up you can get a full length mirror and pose yourself.

As far as judging goes I'm not sure, this is the first I've joined. Maybe you could send a mail to the moderator of this area and see if he has any suggestions.

Would've wanted to do this, but since I am not even home, it's too hard for me to create anything that can be called finished.
Guess it will be for another time.
Nice stuff CRØW.

THis is as finished as I think it's going to get. I like some parts and I hate some parts (especially the weapon) but Oh well. I learned a few things doing this piece which is the best one can hope for I think. :)

And santa was good to me...and at my age that's rare, I've had extra time to make the naughty list.
