hell?
for me hell is being surrounded for the rest of my life by
stupid-annoying-boring-stuckinthe70s people. meaning - living in israel.
so, do i draw badly clothed ugly idiots with word baloons,
reading : "you paint with a COMPUTER? that`s cheating. it`s not REAL art. the computer do the work for ya..."
mmm?...
Hideyoshi
December 13th, 2005, 04:33 AM
haha, chuck, i bare with you! Don't listen to them!

December 13th, 2005, 07:36 AM
yah, chuck, mate - if this was a challenge about a scene I also would know what to say about hell. But it's about environment.
So pay no attention to those who say earth is a disk and just draw! Draw! XP
Chuck,mate.
December 13th, 2005, 10:11 AM
well....
i apologize for the cliché.
i do.
it`s just that after some amount of thinking and sketching ,
i just somehow always ended up with "HELL the cliché"
no matter how i started it.
so i decided - screw it, no point fighting.
and here`s my humble entry:
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2826/hell_small.jpg
a det.

Hell
The evidence indicates rather that hell is a place essentially of shame, one in which people will have no fellowship or discourse with God. Biblical pictures of flame are clearly metaphors, first because if taken literally they result in contradiction (how can there be flames, yet also darkness, as the Bible says?); second, because as metaphors they fit in with other metaphors (flames and thirst as the opposite of water, which is in Scripture a metaphor for God's Spirit) and also fit a literal experience of shame (think of being ashamed and your face burning.) Furthermore, other descriptions of hell, such as people weeping and grinding their teeth, match with expressions of shame in the ancient world, but not physical pain.

THis one's taking me longer than I thought. Finding something original in something so steeped in specific context is forcing my hand a little. But I bet there'll at least be some last minute participation by a secretive few. You'll have some competition no doubt.
Chuck, mate - I'm missing the correlation between your description and the illo. Your quote says no flame, but instead immense shame. I see lava, but that devil doesn't look ashamed to me. So I like both individually, but they aren't syncing up in my opinion.

Due to the advice of helpful critiques I was motivated to push this one more to a finish. Thanks again.
After ten thousand years of resentment and planning, the dark lord guides his young wife across a frozen lake of ash and through the gateway to his domain. There are demons petrified as gargoyles in the places they were standing at the end of the last Great War, and the glowing script is record of the couple's prophetic consumation and infernal conception of the Anti-christ: the event that will reignite the burning pits of hell.

Tis me, im new in here, well, in this forum; giving my critique to the posted backgrounds:
Chuck, mate. - Awesome man, the lava looks so cool; besides, the columns that bears the ceiling's weight are kooler than anything, if only because one would think hell is ACTUALLY below our homes. Nice lava geisers in the back.
Auden100 - This is so freakin awesome!! The colors look a little lazy; the runes are perfect. Technical question: Is the big beast over the gate a Demon Guard? or is it just another statue? The ceiling is cool, seems like another plane of existence.

Thoras - Lazy, hmm? I can see that. I clarified the description a bit more to hopefully answer your question. Usually takes me a couple drafts to sort out the right wording. Thanks for the crit.

My finished entry
http://www.artofromance.ca/ca/projects/EOW/hell.jpg
This entry is an homage to the film High Plains Drifter. It's a Clint Eastwood film. The town begs for Eastwood's protection from bandits and the only way they'll get it is if they paint their ENTIRE town red and name it HELL.
It's a great film, I highly recommend it.
I hope this meets the requirements.

great work everyone,

As the damned souls filed into their new home for the next eternity they were amazed to find that the stereotype about horns and the devil was in fact true. To the point where he had even used them as a major part of Hell's external decoration.

Thoras: This was on Deviant art ages ago, as was said. (This pic was in mythchan's gallery and was quite popular... you are not mythchan... hmm ) I also caught sight of your battle angel and the difference in quality and anatomy is pretty noticable. I smell a thief...

acctually props goes to masque for making that connection with the battle angel first, I seriousely hope this isnt a case of art thievery, but ive sent a note to the original owner on deviantart. If they are one and the same person then thoras im very sorry, if your posting your own work. However it really looks like your not. Ill be getting confirmation soon.
for interests sake the original deviant art user: http://mythchan.deviantart.com/

Hell got old... people started to adapt to all the pain and torture, ...even... like it. And with humans digging deeper, it wouldnt be long before the firey depths of hell were uncovered. This was the answer, a new realm of the clouds, of the mind. The only torture was that of oneself. The souls were abandoned, filed away, left for an infinite life of regret and self pity.
:dur:
Based on part of a dictionary definition of hell.
"Among ancient Jews, Sheol or Tophet was conceived as a gloomy place of departed souls where they are not tormented but wander about unhappily"
I hope this counts as finished..., I'll begin earlier next week.

Hell. The final resting place of all damned souls.
At first arrival they are tortured by clawed demons—ripping and tearing at the skin until it is shredded from the muscle. Then they move down the Stairwell of Zwellalla into the eternal lake of fire, where they will burn and writhe until time’s end.

The gate of Mugengoku
Entering the eighth hell, the blast furnace of Mugengoku, souls labor through a great wasteland of barren ice. Escape is impossible. Those who attempt are mercilessly hunted by the circling Vajra... winged demons wreathed in flame.

The doomed souls will walk the misty barren land alone. Their guilt and sins from the past will mock them through their journey, tormenting and tricking their minds. They will arrive through the gate of the dead and they will earn their redemption to another chance at life or forever be lost in hell.
