concept:apostolus and arbustus.

in the year 2230 the great city of apostolus and its twin town arbustus was firmly earth-bound. after a huge cosmological catastrophe in which earth gravitation lost alot of its "appeal" (sort of speak), the gigantic twins got airborne (due to bad terrane and lousy
foundation and plumbing work..) and drifted apart
and out to the unknown.
3 years of horror and uncertainty had pass untill the good people of arbustus finally reached a technological breakthrough - to a point they were able to control the "drifting" and turn it into "navigating".
not much later the cities were joyfully reunited again,
and the tech` was taught to apostolus by its long lost brother.
the "windy cities" as they`re often called, currently resided nowhere and everywhere.

In the years 1450 of New Empire era, the excisting empire split into two because of a rebellion in the outer solar systems.

The rebels, also known as The Democratic Union of Freedom (DUF) escaped farther away from New Empire space and habited the less known solar systems.

The planet Niezes was chosen as the capital of DUF, the planets strong winds made it ideal to devolep wind power to process safe and pollution-free energy.

Because of the 274 mega-wind power plants surrounding the city of Niezes, it came known as thw Windy City. Many of the DUF citizens claim that the strong winds in Niezes demonstrate the superiority of their ancestors and the strenght of democracy in their union.

For now, the Democratic Union of Freedom and Niezes has stood free for over 357 years without any New Empire harrasment.

Built as a monument to the success of the newly founded Boldran Democracy which ruled the seas with its large navy. "The Windy City" as it became known, was erected over the ocean between the two Boldran Capitals. The clever use of internal cabling allows the structure to withstand the dangers of the wind and merely rock back and forth without any damage being sustained. Though some unfortunate visitors often complain of "Air Sickness" and do not enjoy their stay in the town

I am up in the sky, sailing above the grand cityscape in a sky-streamer and all I see is beyond words. I spot tiny cars, the huge wind generators and as one of the passengers beside me nears my ear to talk to me I hear....

...coz the fu***** wind’s too strong...

Astralopolis
A floating city; it uses huge fans and vents to hover over Earth and generates steam power from consuming water vapor from clouds. The city is self sufficient and environmentally friendly.

The city of Ab'Jarim sits atop the pinnacles and cliffs of the Narij desert. It's massive windmills utilize the severe wind conditions to provide pumping action for the water wells deep below the dry surface, while the high rocky walls provide protection from the dangerous desert creatures.

Felsefetis - City of Singing Winds
the City in the Clouds, Capitol of Winds, and City of Singing Winds - so many names for just one city. This City is full of Artists, Musicians, Philosophers and…birds. This small city was found on the top of a hill. Citiziens call this place City of Singing Winds because it really sings. Strong wind blows into the big pipes, tubes and sounds are coming from the caves placed below the city. Many philosophers and people of art visit this place, while looking for peace, harmony and inspiration.

On Euterpe the Wind always blows in one direction. Sometimes it is so strong that if a houseing were to be exposed it would take damage. So people built their cities under large superstructures that are streamlined against the wind. If people want to travel on this planet they do it with a environmentally safe way. They take floating air ships with sails going in the direction of the wind. If they go against the wind. They have to take electric trains.

Edit:

I want to give an honourable mention to bwkeough, who mixed up timezones and sadly didnt get his image in on time, so you cant vote for it, but atleast its up here: http://nand.net/~keough/sketchbook/windy-city.jpg
"Prince Corvus Vultarii had been standing on the veranda since before dawn. He watched the sun rise and the wind begin to scour the sleeping city clean. Only the utmost sky-flung towers of the royal families were yet visibile from the damp night-time clouds. The acension vote would begin in only a few hours. How many of the lordlings were loyal to his cause? Only time would tell."

Props out to Jakkas. Nice sense of mystery and wonder. well done. The scale from the birds to the city is a bit confusing. It doesn't look like the city is big enough for people. And it's nitpicky, but the spiral walkway doesn't look like it connects. It just looks like rings, but maybe that spacial confusion is what you were going for. don't know. I think it almost works for it.

good work everyone, i voted for auden100 because i really liked the design of the windmills. As well as the nice composition, although i think its worth avoiding a square aspect with environments as i find them more striking if they're either wider or taller.

I voted for DepleteD's illustration. I liked what was done with they imagry and the monochromatic approach. I do have to say though, I felt that auden100 and JakkaS were high on my appeal. I too had windmill's in my painting however, due to certain unfortunate circumstances, I was unable to enter. Great work by all! Almost too hard to choose.

Auden100, thx for comments and critics. I know, I’ve messed up with those birds. I still learning and for now I suck in this kind of painting. This is my second attempt to make environment concept.

Hideyoshi in my opinion your painting is the best (so many details), but Chuck had better concept, and finally I voted for his entry.

Btw, thx for any comments and votes!

wow - no bad entry again :)

Chuck, mate - I think you get my vote for well thought out idea and nice artwork.

Sept13 - I liked the idea, but your architecture needs lot of mending.

conundrum - nice idea. I'd like to have seen the city itself cut bit more clear.

Hideyoshi - your my second runner up. this artwork is stunning. How long did it take you?
Minus-points for this is typical you and I see no fresh ideas...

romance - nice drawing, especially the colours

auden100 - I think, that was my concept, too, when I thought of entering this task ^^... and you made a very good impression of the dust.

jakkas - great artwork as usual. lacks of perspective, like auden already said. But the birds are so cuddly ^__^

depleteD - I wouldn't like to live there ^^'. Nice idea and good choice of colour, me thinks.

bwkeough - I like your scene. Hope you don't mix up time zones in the next round ;)

My measly 2cents.

My vote went to Hideyoshi. I simply liked the technical side of this work. The twisters added a nice dimension.

I like audens Idea and think if it would have been just a tad more finished, I would have voted for that one. I loved the idea though.

Actually all the ideas in themselves were good this round.

Jakkas, I agree with zeitwolf on the perspective. Something to do with scale. But if I knew what I was talking about, I would be able to explain it:P

Sept, again, great idea. I thought the whites, just were to dominant. made the entire picture look to off from the rest of the colors.

i went with auden 100's illo -- not the most polished but consistent in style, good capture of desert colors and landforms, and a very believable concept (although the access ladders, scaffolds, whatever must be on the lee side of the columns, right? ;) )
