Hey, I'm a Newbie, and still getting to grasps with manga and character designing.
I spend more time now copying things and just randomly doodle.
My site isn't up yet but maybe in a month or so...And it'll contain the range of characters I've designed for a game Idea I had (never to be made of course)
I study AS Art at school which I'm leaving to go to Art College to do AVCE Art, which I had a unconditional offer for. In the future I wish to do Concept/Character Design Degree and the same goes for a job.
I've been pushed in this direction by a few people and some of the college. Although I enjoy doing it none the less...but I still have a long way to go till I'm half as good as most of the art I've seen here.

Well not the background is done to the pic. It's just a design I done for a Gambling Pumpkin person, some small poorly done sketches round him for minions and small detial. In a bit I'm going to re draw it and do the small detail a bit better. Any Crits are welcome maybe someone can take me under their wing (adopt a n00b...heh)

i have a few questions before i give my opinion.

first, i am unfamiliar with AS art. so i ask, what is that? .. and while i am at it, what is AVCE art?

terms out of the way. i dont think you mean offer when you say an unconditional offer dont mean to rag on you about grammar and words, usually i dont even notice the flaws, i just happen to and it was kinda funny. :p

i am guessing the sketch you are keeping is the largest one in the center.

he looks okay i suppose, nothing about him implies he is a gambler, i am sure you will add something, or you may not.

if you are going to design a character - or draw up a character sheet - i advise you show more of the character and dont put him in a pose. id show his front, side, and a pose. unless you are satisfied, you should develop him more, in my opinon you should.

the cuts that make up his features need a little work, so that the perspective implies the correct form of his pumpkin head.

some more advise to you would to study your anatomy and form sketching techniques, especially.

AVCE and AS are Advance Vocational Certificate of Eduction and Advanced Sudsiduary, They Come after Key Stage 4 Gerenral Certificate of Secondary Education and Before University. They are optional whether you want to do them of not and at school they do ask for Decent GCSE results.
I had the unconditional Offer (as in sale or asking is someone wants something /bad analogies) I could fail my AS's in Religious Studies and Art and still be accepted into the College.

Thank you for you comments and I appreciate what you said about the Design Sheet although this wasn't a design (my fault again) but a sketch, of an idea that I had (not particularly original I know) Nothing more then a minute of recording an idea of shape for memory.

Heres a second attempt on A4 but I only got and A4 section of it scanned.

Need to sort of some things and then I'll probally CG it.
I'm Kind of stuck on ideas to hint at the fact he likes to play with Chances. Other then the Gamblers/Card Dealers Jacket and Shirt (meant to be western style-ish) and the Cards on his back.

Heres a few others The samurai I'm not to proud with, first attempt and just could really design a intrestingg armoured outfit. The Swords are sketchy and are meant to have a ivery and Red Dragon head on the Handles, the sheild is meant to be small, clips on to back or something for use of the second sword. I'll have to design the handles a bit larger and then srink them down to size.
The Second is Peridot, A Gem, I'm quite pleased with her I totally redesigned her clothing last night.
