very nice! does the caran dache leave a texture on the paper or is that just the way you made the marks?

thats fantastic, you make me want to go back to school
the angle and placement of the hand make it look detached from your body

Daarken, it's lovely man, the dramatic, moody lighting and colors are great and there's a lot of interesting shapes going on in here, sweet work man.

mindcandy: thanks! you should check it out, its really fun. you can use it like paint or use it like pastels, awesome stuff.
blackhawk: yeah, i wanted some really dramatic lighting and something ugly and gross, heh. thanks! :D
andrew and deth: yeah, the hand does look kinda out of place now that you mention it. i need to step back from my work more often.
pibb: i gesso the surface first so that i can get the cool textures to show through. this time i just used the palette knife for the textures. sometimes i use a brush so you can see brush strokes instead.

Daarken,
great selfportrait page on your site . reminds me of Andrew ;)
I went to the Academy of Art in SF my first two years (1995-97 - i grew up 3 hours north of San Fran) and Those were the best years of the whole college/artschool ordeal. I did my last few years at SVA in New York, and though I fell in love with the city, I think the school sucked and my art suffered for it and I shoulda stayed at the academy. If I ever go for my masters, I think im heading back there. I can tell by your sepia portraits we had the same instructor for the head and hands class.....what was his name...Bill? Does Shannon still teach the beginners figure drawing class?
Aww, fond memories.....
:D
