well some people may jump straight to the idea of chicago, but its more open than that ;) showing wind with banners dust leaves hair etc, can help but isnt neccesary, maybea jes a description on why its windy, and maybe giving its some cool positioning and justification. :) enjoy

hello there!
first time in an EOW round.
here`s my entry:
http://images5.theimagehosting.com/windyCITY.jpg
concept:apostolus and arbustus.
in the year 2230 the great city of apostolus and its twin town arbustus was firmly earth-bound. after a huge cosmological catastrophe in which earth gravitation lost alot of its "appeal" (sort of speak), the gigantic twins got airborne (due to bad terrane and lousy
foundation and plumbing work..) and drifted apart
and out to the unknown.
3 years of horror and uncertainty had pass untill the good people of arbustus finally reached a technological breakthrough - to a point they were able to control the "drifting" and turn it into "navigating".
not much later the cities were joyfully reunited again,
and the tech` was taught to apostolus by its long lost brother.
the "windy cities" as they`re often called, currently resided nowhere and everywhere.

In the years 1450 of New Empire era, the excisting empire split into two because of a rebellion in the outer solar systems.
The rebels, also known as The Democratic Union of Freedom (DUF) escaped farther away from New Empire space and habited the less known solar systems.
The planet Niezes was chosen as the capital of DUF, the planets strong winds made it ideal to devolep wind power to process safe and pollution-free energy.
Because of the 274 mega-wind power plants surrounding the city of Niezes, it came known as thw Windy City. Many of the DUF citizens claim that the strong winds in Niezes demonstrate the superiority of their ancestors and the strenght of democracy in their union.
For now, the Democratic Union of Freedom and Niezes has stood free for over 357 years without any New Empire harrasment.

chuck, mate - nice pic. Interesting "catastrophe". The description posts a lot of questions. Nice stuff. Sorry, I can't offer any critiques. It looks sharp.
sept13 - Good pic. The perspective on the arms is off. The lower right one and the upper left one particularly. Their extension should coincide with the curve of the yellow windows. Also, I'm kind of wondering how far this thing goes up and down. Maybe if there were another in the background. One more: The white is too consistent. It's shadows should change hue, and maybe it's highlights too. Nice job.

Thanks auden, that's the sort of crit I was sort of looking for. Well, it's my third digital painting this far, and I'm doing my best to improve my works each week, unfortunately that still ain't a good excuse for a bad perspective :D
Anyways, too bad I am too busy for the rest of the week that I can't really go back and clean up the mistakes. Next time I'll do better.

Built as a monument to the success of the newly founded Boldran Democracy which ruled the seas with its large navy. "The Windy City" as it became known, was erected over the ocean between the two Boldran Capitals. The clever use of internal cabling allows the structure to withstand the dangers of the wind and merely rock back and forth without any damage being sustained. Though some unfortunate visitors often complain of "Air Sickness" and do not enjoy their stay in the town

roight, thats not too many entries, now theres two things i can do, i can A: close it by the deadline and move onto a better topic, or B: extend the deadline to allow for more entries. Wuddja think?
Happy Camper
December 10th, 2005, 08:14 PM
I think you should close this one as normal then start the next topic with an extended deadline. Participation appears to be down in all the activities so I'd say its just this time of year. Since everbody is going to be busy have the next batch of topics as fortnightlys or monthlys untill participation picks up again.

nice work Hideyoshi, thats great detail, though maybe a bit more atmosphere could really bring it to life.
Red Rook: you may as well close it, i think Happy Campers right. Though hopefully you can keep running at least fortnightlys.

Astralopolis
A floating city; it uses huge fans and vents to hover over Earth and generates steam power from consuming water vapor from clouds. The city is self sufficient and environmentally friendly.

No time to work on this one, I'm too busy drawing robots. A little time to admire, though.
Hideyoshi: That's really beautiful. I'd love to get a look into your process there; I tend to get lost in all the lines whenever I try to draw that complicated a scene in perspective.
Romance: That's not crap, maybe you just need to take more time to refine it more. It's a cool idea and I love the colors.
Conundrum: Very evocative, great idea and good composition. The left half of the arch, if you could rotate it so it falls off the side rather than the corner of the page, would really improve things I think.
Chuck, mate: Love the clouds + the atmosphere.
Sept13: I'm not quite getting yours. I really like the ships, but I think they need new colors, the white is making them really stick out and actually look unfinished.

The city of Ab'Jarim sits atop the pinnacles and cliffs of the Narij desert. It's massive windmills utilize the severe wind conditions to provide pumping action for the water wells deep below the dry surface, while the high rocky walls provide protection from the dangerous desert creatures.

Red Rook - I say move on. If people aren't feeling this one or are busy, then just give us another. I'm rearing to go.
Conundrum - Really nice clouds and colors, but the city itself is just too loose for me to get an accurate idea of what's going on, or what it looks like.
Hideyoshi - Nice pic. There are some little inconsistencies with the perspective, but it reads well. I'd like to see some similarities developed between the buildings and the sailboats. The boats are very traditional, while the city is very futuristic. It kind of makes the boats seem like an afterthought. I also think more windmills could be added if the city uses them as it's main source of power. But nicely done.
romance - neat city. I really like the blue in the thrusters. I'd like to see more form and variation given to the buildings. There are so few lights on, and the buildings themselves seem just like cones of metal or plastic, no windows, ornamentation, or anything. And you put maybe a little too much atmosphere on the rear propeller. Makes the city seem unusually deep for what we're shown of it.

Stick to regular deadlines. Keeping the competition on schedule ensures its longevity, even if some weeks are not as well as attended as others. If you move the dates around, folks won't know when to look for the next topic. Working within the constraints of the weekly deadline is also part of the challenge.
I'm guessing most folks are like me, I only have time to do 1 or maybe 2 of the weekly competitions at any given time and I'll choose the one that I find the most interesting.
My entry will be up in a couple hours. :)

thx everyone! thx auden!
romance: If you care for a few crits: The scale issue isn't really addressed to in your pic. Listen to what auden says! :-) Break up shapes and carefully place details. Plus, always use straight lines when it's about architectural stuff. It prevents the pic from looking wonky. The lighting, colors and mood are nice! Well, your creatures and characters are damn good so it's just a matter of time and practice before you score at enviros as well!
Yo, Nuclear, looking forward to yours!

Here is my take on the windy city
http://people.uleth.ca/~andrew.melnychukosee/portolio/windPlanet.jpg
On Euterpe the Wind always blows in one direction. Sometimes it is so strong that if a houseing were to be exposed it would take damage. So people built their cities under large superstructures that are streamlined against the wind. If people want to travel on this planet they do it with a environmentally safe way. They take floating air ships with sails going in the direction of the wind. If they go against the wind. They have to take electric trains.
