i painted this over the weekend. 30x40 oil on canvas. i really tried to throw technique out the window on this one, and really just concentrate on nailing the right colors and values, and not careful modeling. big and ugly!

xnku: thanks

Lono: thanks. i hate it when that happens.

joel: i use a crazy color palette. i have a bunch of colors i pull from. sometimes i'll use, like 20 colrs, sometimes, i'll paint only with the primaries. really i've found it doesnt make too much of a difference. i think i paint, basically with mud. i only use pure tube color on the moneyshots. using many brushes helps keep me from getting too muddy.here are some of the more useful colors from my palette:
mars black
sepia
vandyke brown
burnt and raw umber
burnt sienna
old holland transparent red oxide lake
persian red
english red
cadmium red scarlet
cadmium yellow deep
holbein lemon yellow pale
cinnabar light
barite green
old holland cobalt turquoise deep
schvening's blue light
ultramarine
prussian blue
old holland kings blue deep
misty blue
violet gray deep
old holland magenta
yellow gray
holbein monochrome gray warm
portland gray deep
and for transparents:
gamblin indian yellow
perylene red
pthalo blue
pthalo green
payne's gray
i dont necessarily use all of these in every painting, these are all the colors in my arsenal. well almost.
oh yeah, and titanium white, how could i ever forget that?

LiL QoH: thanks

davi: danke

stikler999: everything i know about color i learned painting these. i urge you to try. you'll learn volumes. trust me :)

manley:are you teaching these days? tell em, its all about crazy lighting and reflections. learn those things, and everything isnt as hard anymore...well almost.-c36

you deserve a
:chug: for this one!

oh the colors! Did you use a ref photo? or where you sitting on the sidewalk with all your colors, pens and what not? The reflections on the bugs windshild are the bedst!

on the minus.......well the bug doesn't have a license plate, that is so unrealistic!
well it was meant as a sarcastic comment, but now that I wrote it I think that a very tight graphic element in the lower part of the painting would be rather cool..

being a huge fan of beetles, i love this piece a lot. technique aside, it still looks very 'techniqued' to me. the colors, simply beautiful.

el coro - you always manage to surprise me!!! The bug I expected from you was a sort of monster, to see the VW beetle was really surprising.

Jason - just show them el coro's paintings and they sure want to do something similar!

Hey el coro...this is fantastic. You really captured the lighting very very well. It has that spontaneous and loose feel to it man...awesome. Hey did you work off of a photograph or did you work from life on this one...cause I would love to do something like this from life but it would take me too long I fear if I was out there with my easel. If you did do this from life how long did it take you and how many sittings?

On a side note I just want to say man that you have really inspired me to get my butt in gear and learn to paint. You are always working on something and you've made it a part of your life. That's inspiring and encouraging. Thanks for sharing your amazing art with us.

you ever think of trying to sell this to the VW people? you could probably rake in some $$ for it. or is that what the kids call "selling out"? really nice piece, each one you do with cars gets progressively better.

ElCoro,

Thats more than a pretty picture. It's fantastic. Your global light and usage of blue hues on the tarmac and glass is precise. I dig the warm around the specular reflections. It is an absoloute fine piece of work.

How many hours of work did this involve you over the weekend?

Blessed art thou.:)

Yes, yes, more praise...but it's all already been said.

Richard Estes was the MAN of hyperrealism when it was bit in the 70's, but El Coro, I think you beat him at his own game. What strikes me is the life and heat that comes off your canvas. Estes' stuff has always left me emotionally unstirred. Just stunning.

The only problem is that the bug is SO lovingly rendered that the white pickup falls flat in comparison.

Rock on.

I really like your pics of city streets - you find an unexpected beauty in urban surroundings, and that appeals to me so much more than art with 'predictable' prettiness... if you see what I mean :)

Maybe I should go and learn how to paint.

Maybe I can't.

jesus christ! i didn't expect such a response from this one! thank you to all who replied. for those of you with words of support, thanks, it really means a lot to me to get this kind of feedback form the excellent artist community we have here at ca. and for those of you with questions...

bone: yes, i used ref. its just easier that way.

Gezstar: yeah i know what you mean. i love the textures of the city, i find great beauty in it.

Atomick : richard estes? wow. surely you jest. that guys WAY beyond my level. i am humbled in my skills compared to him. thank you very much for the compliment!

lobo: probably about 4-6 hours. i used a lot of big brushes, which allows me to cover a lot of ground fast. but with all the noodling and color mixing, it still takes a fair amount of time.

TARGETE: shit! thanks bro! coming from you that means a lot!

foster: shit, i am humble in my skills compared to you. i only hope that i can come as correct as you do some day. your words mean a lot to me. i want to move east someday, but the bay area is just too enticing. great weather, best weed in the country- ooops. i just let my most cherished artistic secret out...

cotron: i should try. there are soooo many vw yuppies out here. the only probleem with that is that its not a passat:)

goo: its a photo

mindcandy: thanks man. its people like you who keep this forum going. i encourage learning to paint very strongly. it will help you in more areas than you could possibly believe. good job on the oil painting you posted recently. dont stop! keep painting! you have the drive, and ask anyone, thats all it takes.

Paulo: dont jump, man! paint! its fun and theraputic. it keeps me from going crazy and killing people, most importantly.
thanks again to all who replied. you all keep me going. seriously.

then, i cant believe you did that in 4 hours..

i say you just post everything you do in the OOhs and Ahhs section, cause theres just nothing to critisize.

very lastly...is that the barest hint of a license plate I catch on the bug? ;)
