Margaret, the Retail Gigagiant Wherehouse Checker
Suggested Theme: Humorous

Margaret is 35, works insane hours at the local Retail Gigagiant Wherehouse Store somewhere in the U.S. Midwest, and just wants to do two things: Write a novel, and take a vaction. Without her family.

She has survived Black Friday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)) – stood her ground against the onslaught of the Christmas-Sales-Crazed-Customer hordes where many of her coworkers broke down in tears or just quit on the spot. Her store manager is very happy, but she’s just exhausted after working a 16 hour day after getting up at 2am and is still expected to cook dinner for her vestigle deadbeat husband and four screaming kids (1,3,4, and 5) after getting home late to their doublewide trailer.

Wow. Not a lot of entires this week past. We'll see how you guys like round seven. What few of you had the cahonies to enter did a fantastic job. Extra brownie points all the way around to you guys.
----
Bear65, you threw me with the guest entires, but I think I got them correct. Make sure your friends join CA as soon as they can so we don't have the confusion the next time around.
----
As always, let me know if I goofed something - I'll fix it as soon as I can!

Cheers,
~Oreg.

had to go with Standing. among the caricaturish pieces, i feel it has the most engaging and multidimensional expression. interesting POV, too.

anyone else seeing Helzon's color work as very dark? i thought it was intentional with his Mortimer, not so sure with this subject.

Overall, I thought everybody did a fantastic job. A few C&C's below. I look forward to seeing all your next entries.

I voted for Jska's entry. The character stood out as the most heavily caffinated and most needing of a vacation. The apron is great! Having it crammed with all her gear really helps form her personality; (busy, enthusiastic, organized). Great entry, keep em' comin'.

Rosco - Thought it was great. Wish it was coloured.

Chuck,Mate. - Great colours and animation. Just wish there was more detail.

4thAngle - Kinda creepy, well done though. Background should have been cleaner.

Poshspice - This is my runner-up pick. Great rendering. I really like family photo as well.

Xpose - This needs some work. It doesn't show that she's tired from working a 16 hour shift, nor does it feel finished.

FridayEve - Great rendering. But I don't feel any humor in this entry.

ParkerD - I would have liked to see this cleaned up and colored. Is that a camel-toe? Extra points for that. :P

Masque - Dude, what happened? I was anticipating a masterpiece. Oh well. Next time.

JakkaS - Great rendering and funny, unfortunately I thought it didn't meet the character description. She looks like a 1936 German Olympic Swimmer :)

Bear65 - This is a great entry. I thought the rendering could use work though. Why is the husband in the fridge? If he was really deadbeat, he'd make Margaret get his beer.

ChrisGrim - This entry just doesn't quite match the description for me.
She looks younger than 35, and with a body like that, there is no way she gave birth to four little vermin.

Solorpower - Nice attempt. It looks like she is getting into work. I would have rathered see her in leaving.

Helzon - I was really looking forward to seeing this one finished. But too me, it just doesn't feel complete in its current state. Feels too dark and unfocused. I get drawn to hers knees before her face. I do like the lighting from the Xmas lights though.

Jabberwookie - This could have looked better a bit more cleaned up. Also, only half of her is showing - doesn't meet the CHOW requirments.

Standing - Fantastic entry. Second runner up. Great empathetical situation. Her feet are HUGE! and she could have looked a bit more tired.

Doven - Good sketch but it doesn't meet the character description at all.

Alan Atwood - She looks older than 35 and the rendering could have been better.

Antilight77 - The bag is too bright. It shouldn't be the focus of the picture. As well... she looks like she's 70!!!! Bound to happen though in her situation.

Stay gold,

-Rob

romance all the way. Brilliant caricature and great palette. I love that even the watch and shoes are too small for her.

Holy crap a vote! Thanks :D

My vote went to Romance, I love love love the style and she looks oh so depressed and just wanting to daydream her way out of it all. Close runner-up goes to Poshspice, I love her personality and the rendering is awesome as well.

Can't wait for the next round. Bring it on Oregano!! :)

I voted for Standing. I think Marge has just the right fed-up sort of expression there, plus great viewpoint.

- sorry Romance, I'll admit mine coulda been better. I sort of ran out of steam on this one since I just don't work so well away from home. In my defense, I think I at least got the tired, trashy, and 35-ish part of the descript down okay.

My vote is for Standing for this wonderfully comprehensible facial expression and the perspective.

Posh was good to and
Fridayeve looks like you could see that lady in any Walmart in the US

My vote is going to FridayEve. It really seems like a character study of a real person. Romance is right, it doesn't have the humor that a lot of these have, but I don't think that was part of the brief. She really looks like she can't wait to get home and cool dinner. :P

Great work everyone. Wish I'd had time this week.

Photobucket wont let me. I deleted that pic from my account, renamed the finished one as the sketch and uploaded it but for some reason it still came up as the sketch. Here's what the finished version looks like though.

man this was tough to decide. I was toying with going with Romance becasue i really love the character in his painting, but i eneded up voting for Posh bacasue it had all the elements of the brief along with a badass painting. (love the photo of the kids)

romance got my vote this week, but it was a tough foursome to decide on. runners up: posh, jakkas and helzon.
romance: your character is just too much, man. if i ever find a woman with a shirt containing that many buttons, i'll be running in the opposite direction! she looks so wistful that it allowed me to wonder what she was wondering, ya dig? by not putting in all of the other elements (kids, husband, book writing, vacation) you summed it all up in her expression. bravo!
posh: most complete story (eg elements), but must say that romance's posturing and mood removed the need for the elements thus his slightly higher ranking. :)
jakkas: like romance, you had some nice caricature-like distortion, but i never thought of the guy bringing the flower....thought of him more like a beefy redneck asking 'where's my beer and pot pie?!?' not some little fella. :)
helzon: your character and development was so much fun! i must admit i was diggin' it more as line art than as color, but a solid entry none-the-less! that elf is just too damn funny.
cheers!

My votes going with Romance! Top work! Love it.... I'll try and do a crit of each piece sometime! Great contributions from all and sundry! :) I would like to have seen more entries personally... sigh...

Helzon
December 5th, 2005, 01:12 PM
Romance: Yeah I agree with you...it was really rushed. I thought the circle behind them would pull your focus to them as opposed to her knees.
But I see your points.

Red: Thanks bro! A blast to draw...but again, succumbed to the siren's call of horrid colors :no hope: Monochrome pallete and grayscale values...here I come.

Ultimately though the choice this week went to Posh. Silly tight again..and the colors handled with far more diginity and
care than I could even begin to muster.
Here's to everyone that submitted...my hat's off! Also, Rosco, Chuck, mate, romance and standing...made this a truly tough
decision. Great showings!

there were some great entries on this one.
lots of styles lots of skills.
but ultimately romance just did it for me.
dunno....the colors are awsome, the rendering and style are
brilliant, and the stance and face of this poor lady just screams:
"ho lord...i can`t take it any more...the long hours...the stupid, stinking, whining, maggot people...the ass-hole boss o` mine...my shitty life...i`m gonna get me a gun."
:)

I voted Fridayeve because that picture just tells so many stories for me. overall really not that diverse since most of em went for the fat sulking look
