Video recording of you painting...

I always see these videos pop up where you get to watch the artist paint a painting from start to finish in painter or photoshop, yet I never hear about the program used.

Kinda curious, anyone know of what this program is? And, if there is a mac version or comparable application?

Kinda want to record myself painting something for shits and giggles. :)

Well, I think Painter and OC have that capability built in (at least the latest versions). So you can play back every brushstroke afterward. If that's the same thing you're talking about...

Not sure about PS though. I'm sure there must be some way though.

Inkscape also has similar capabilities, of keeping a log of all actions taken then allowing the user to play it back, but unfortunately while i may be able to use that feature right now, it doesn't work under Windows and has been disabled in all the official releases.

But they are working on fixing it up for the next release. =)

if the program itself is recording,
you likely arent going to see your mouse cursor move over menu nbars and what not.
i've seen video where you can actually see the artist go to their desktop.

i used to have an NEC monitor that had all sorts of input and output terminals.
i could just hook it up to a vcr and record anything on the screen.
i'm sure the pros use a similar, yet digital, process.

I've seen people using Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/products/studio/whatsnew.asp) but I don't think it supports Mac.

I managed to find Snapz Pro X v2 (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/) for osx. Tried it out for a bit and was pretty pleasently surprised with the result. Only problem is no matter what the file is always over 100 megs. :S

I just made one of a PS painting. It was fun until I realized it was 30 minutes and 151 MB! Way too huge of a file for my crap.

As for reducing the file size and speeding up the playback, get VirtualDub. (http://www.virtualdub.org/)

Free video editing package, I usually just put a video filter on to reduce the screen size by half, and set the speed and keyframe options to play back faster and drop in-between frames, select a codec with good compression, and re-compress the movie. They still come out fairly hefty, but with a little tinkering you should be able to get it down to a decent size without losing too much quality or detail.

I use Camtasia too especially for it's playback and zoom capabilities. The Techsmith algorythm isn't bad either.
Fraps is used by a lot of people around the workplace as well but it sucks compression wise.

bbscreen recorder is by far the best one i have tried. camtasia and the others chug and could be smoother in recording. bb is seamless in comparison.

Camtasia is supposed to be working on a version for the Mac, but they've been at it for some time now... :(
