There's alot of really good submissions here, congrats to everyone that participated I'm glad that I found this after coming back from a 6 month hiatus, what a treat. It was hard to really choose any one of em, cause there's at least 10 favorites.
I voted for Oregano's piece because when I think of Degenesis i think of character interractions, and that's what visually moved me. It truly belongs in the world of Degenesis.

For me it came down to Amishcommy and bumskee
hard decision to make. I love the detail in Bumskee's face but Amish had a nice direction for his mystic's clothing(fur skull and etc) and feeling to it. I like the touch of snow.

Was back and forth for awhile, went with bumskee in the end. I really like what you did with the head, and the overall piece has a nice feel.
Other shortlisters, codakromek, jakkas, hurri, andrewley, and alot of others are extremely good.

November 27th, 2005, 04:39 AM
I voted for solorpower. Extremely good rendering, I liked the charachter design very much. It has an epic feel which I think adds freshness to so much "degeneration" going on in this round ;)

I flaked this time around because of too much turkey. oops! Great entries everyone! This is the first time I'm seeing of them all, it's a lot to take in. I voted for whoami's because it got my attention right off the bat. I really liked the pencil style and um, really it's just exactly what I was thinking had I done one this week. Also, Hurricane, Bumskee, AndrewLey, Oregano, and JakkaS really impressed me this week.

i think codakromeks was the most striking visually but bumskee's fit degenesis the best.. the problem i had with his is that he doesnt look old enough.. he looks like a grizzled late-30's or so.. i went with amishcommy's cuz it was the best one that came close to the idea in my head of this caracter

November 27th, 2005, 05:46 AM
voted for oregano, also because hes one of the few who drawed with graphite...whats kinda sad, but thats the way it goes.
i think you catched the feeling for a spiritual leader quite well and it seems to fit in the world of degenesis which i know at least a bit.
wish i could have done my entry, maybe next time.

Loads of really awesome entry's this time. But for me i thought Bumskee's went best for me. Its damn well painted but to me it seemed great Degenesis style, and the characters expression and stuff is great.
Great entry's from Jakkas, Hurricane, Al-X, trollboy and Bwkeough. Good job everyone.
PS. Its PHATandy* you spelt it PHARandy in the poll Oregano.

I voted for coakromek, there is something in the way he rendered the
grapite version that clicks for me, something about the olds chamans
expresion looks really life like, and the garments and desing looks
really well, some how it the one that looks the more mmm... belivable to me,
Nice work all around, Ill be back for more of this goodness :D

Hurri was in a league of his own this time. But lots of good ones nevertheless.. (and i forgot all about the deadline. lol, i suck!)

There are so many great pictures here and a lot of the also rans did a great job of translating the brief and pushing their abilities.
Huricains piece was the best picture by a country mile but I could n't vote for it as I didn't feel it met all the requirements.
Also I must be missing something as Oreganos never even made my top 5 although I loved the way he laid his character down ( I'll be useing that myself one day) I realy wasn't convinced by the rendering. His line work was nice though.
csteingart was a close second for me as I realy felt he'd gone for it convincingly but for covering all the bases I went for bwkeough.
Honouable mentions to:- morbidhumor, goran, solorpower and of course myself.
Rob
Thanks to those who voted for me. 2 votes for a first attempt, maybe one day I'll see my name in lights.

Great entry's everyone!
Oregano, you may want to take mine down. it's not complete enough to be called presentable, and does'nt live up to the rules of no heads or busts. I did'nt get a chance to get a proper scan, and I'm making things look a bit unprofessional. Sorry to waste your time like that.

coakromek - wicked, loved seeing the juxtaposed mediums, ya got my vote
bumskee, JakkaS - awesome

my vote to oreg-it just fits perfectly in every aspect. from the dirty look to the small ornaments.
good job all of the others.
in response to the one crit from the original thread:
i had read throughout the degenesis book before doing that pic and was probably too influenced by marko. could've done more with the shading i guess, and i still have to learn how to get in more believable clothing and ornaments.
AmishCommy
November 27th, 2005, 11:18 AM
voted for Codakromek (you fucked up his name) cause i liked the overall design and execution, and i loved the fact that the dude showed age without the use of facial hair. the rest of us pussed out and went with what's easy

November 27th, 2005, 11:48 AM
My vote is for Oregano. It's the character concept and the inventive pose Johand take in the pic. And my laud for the final choice of graphite!
AndrewLey, bumskee, jakkas, hurricane, coakromek - yours are also great. But I missed the charme of pencil ^^;

OMG - LOL I'm sorry man. :x It's fixed.

Fixed Codakromek's name.
Interceptor, I actually liked the blue pencil work, and there's enough of the character to qualify. Don't worry about this time. There's a lot of really sketchy pictures in this round, so I think we'll let it slide. But if you do it again, I'll send the Mad Chef after you! bwhahaha :madchef:

A fairly complex character to depict this time 'round, I don't think anyone really nailed all Alaric's qualities and characteristics, but Codakromek's came closest for me.

Man, tough one. I REALLY wanted to vote for solarpower. The drawing itself is superb, and I love that face. My only problem with it is that it wasn't post-apoc enough/polish enough. Too many traditional north american shamanistic elements, and not enough modern or slavik elements.
Bumskee also had a captivating face. Absolutely love it. But in the end the overall impression wasn't mystical or degenisis enough.
I really like Oregano's in that he went with a more ordinary person...this person isn't any kind of central figure or hero in the overarching scheme of things, dispite his importance to some small group of people. You get a sense of a tribe struggling to make it in a harsh world, not a bunch of asskickers and name takers. However, I'd feel dirty voting for the person who made the topic, especially considering how difficult it was to get any concrete information on the Degenisis world.
In the end I"m gonna have to go with JakkaS. Dispite the face looking too young, I like the overal design of the character. I like the post-modern look to his clothing, the use of a censor as well as the cliche staff, the possibly radioactive sticks in a small pouch at his side, and the solid placement in a harsh and snowy world. And the lack of american indian influence is also nice. Still extremely hard to choose this one, there were so many other great entries.
Wish I would have actually finished mine (although he would have had a cliche staff too) :P

oregano, no prob...thanks for the fix.
I didn't enter until close to the end, and I edited my link a couple of times (trying out different file types)...you must have been collecting links as I was posting, and grabbed a dead link...
suppose I shouldn't wait until the end to post.

Wow ... I didn't even think I would get into voting. Honestly mine wasn't finished, but its an honor to be up there with these pieces.
My vote went to Bumskee, I really liked to mystic mood to it and it was nicely rendered- good contrast and composition as well. It was a close call between a few! I'd elaborate more but I've no time :(
Hopefully this week I will get a decent piece in...

sweet round of entries.
bumskee, got my vote, simple, straight-foreward, and the best if you ask me. thank you maxetormer, nice words!
csteingart,,,,, thanks to you, glad you approve.
AmishCommy,,,,,,, thank you for the vote, also for the spelling heads-up, cheers.
masque,,,,,,,thank you, too, for thinking I did okay! haha. I am surprised I am getting any votes.
my other favs:
standing,, that is what I call post-apoc.
Oregano,,,,,I like the vignette quality. graphite never hurts, either.
andyley,,,,I wish the whole thing fit on my screen at once,,,nice painter look.
hurri,,,,,great use of tone and detail to focus attention, yer the man..
JakkaS,,,,,just awesome, thats all there is to it.
Sinix,,,,,,that looks faster than a speeding bullet, guy,,, really reminds me of yoshitaka amano. bow
AmishCommy,,nice control and loosness,, I might even of liked some of your other versions in yer sb more though, sweet job though.
morbid humor,,,even though it looks like a genetic crossbreed of mikey jackson and a monkey, that face is awsome and full of feeling.

Awsome entries everyone,
I voted for codakromek, very solid character and reflection on the theme!. :) sweet, and right behind were, sinix, oregano and andrewley.
Standing, bRØk3n_sPiRiT, AmishCommy, JakkaS and hurricane, I enjoyed very much.
Also wow! for all the votes. :) hehe cheers,
Oregano, you might want to double check Andrewley's name on the poll.

I've voted Bumskee. It would be cool to see a bit more detail in the costume, because it's a bit undefined in places, but there is an excellent feeling of character and it seemed to fit the brief nicely too... But this was a real close call with MANY others! Great stuff from all!

i went with amishcommy. bumskee was up there, but i just dont see his rendering coming from a 'world of ice'. although it is fleshed out nicely, just doesnt live up to the description. amish came off with what i wanted to do really, and has a great texture feel to it.

I voted Andrew ley. To me his piece best fit the criterea of the contest, many of the other entries seemed a bit on the young side.

Had to go with coakromek. I think his is the most unique vision of the character. Very original, yet still seems like he'd fit in the degenisis world.
Bumskee was a very close second. What a beautiful rendering.

i voted for al-x, i think he got closest to the age and style..
runner up : Bumskee, sinix and Trollboy
!!! CHEERS
bdfoster
November 29th, 2005, 09:12 AM
This was a tough one, but in the end my vote went to Al-X.
Other highlights:
Standing-- lost mental points from me because it was color (I know, I know-- "suggested medium")
Oreg-- The "original" (photoshop) composition read better because, with my natural tendency to read left to right, Johann read first. That placed him as the center of interest with the other two as secondary characters. Now the young guy on the left reads as more important because of the layout. If the graphite drawing were flipped, you probably would've had my vote.
Goran-- nice looking piece but somehow didn't read as "Degenesis" to me.
Hurricane-- Loved the piece. LOVED it! But I can't get past the fact that this guy looks like a deranged wildman with a knife rather than the spiritual leader of a tribe of people. The energy of the piece is killer, but I'm not sure fits the brief.
Andrew Ley, JakkaS, Sinix, Bumskee-- All toop notch in my book. Some were just didn't grab me, some were a little too youg looking, but still great stuff
