ROUND #6
-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3RD
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------
Margaret, the Retail Gigagiant Wherehouse Checker
Suggested Theme: Humorous
Margaret is 35, works insane hours at the local Retail Gigagiant Wherehouse Store somewhere in the U.S. Midwest, and just wants to do two things: Write a novel, and take a vaction. Without her family.
She has survived Black Friday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)) – stood her ground against the onslaught of the Christmas-Sales-Crazed-Customer hordes where many of her coworkers broke down in tears or just quit on the spot. Her store manager is very happy, but she’s just exhausted after working a 16 hour day after getting up at 2am and is still expected to cook dinner for her vestigle deadbeat husband and four screaming kids (1,3,4, and 5) after getting home late to their doublewide trailer.

Hello all,
Love the subject. I suppose I will put myself out there first. This is a WIP so be kind, but feel free to critique. (I know the shoes suck...working on it)
Just for future reference is this style too catoony for this website? Still new to CHOW so just wondering.
Thanks

I could, sadly, just get a picture of one my cousins and run a couple of filters over it, you guys would never know the difference. :(
Sadly, doven, that makes two of us, though not my cousins. The topic is a little closer to home than I'd like to admit. :dur:
Doesn't mean we can't have fun with it though.
Or, another option is to do a serious portrait of the people affected. Explore the subject and see what you can come up with. Just because it's suggested as humorous doesn't mean you have to do a humorous piece. I imagine this could be a rather poignant character study if done right.
Cheers,
~Oreg.

When I read the brief I immediately knew I wanted to do a psychological portrait rather than an illustrative treatment -- for many reasons, I have a lot of empathy with the character as I envision her (I could write paragraphs about that, but if you don't see it in the image, it wouldn't make much sense anyway). Meet Meg.
http://www.metrocast.net/~chipartist/ImagePost/MegCHOW6Fweb.jpg
Not my usual illustrative approach (is there a smiley for "radical understatment"?) but very much what I wanted to do with this portrait.
One perhaps odd request of you viewers: If I were to do this in a physical medium I'd do it large, perhaps even slightly over life-size, to force a gallery viewer "into" Meg's world. The only way to do this on screen is to ask you to view the image at 100% scale, about 18-20" from the monitor, the approx. distance from which I worked on it. Will require a largish monitor, and perhaps d/l'ing the image to open in a less cluttered context like the Windoze Fax/Image Viewer.
How 'bout if I say "Please"? :^^:

This was a lot of fun. Funny to see so many people's pieces with similar subject matter, as I'm sure some of us are very familiar with either seeing people like this in the day to day or even have family that remind us of the character.

Yes, I've noticed that too. This is one idea that can be drawn at face-value (hence the similarities), and it takes time and a bit of "creative day-dreaming" to change it up a bit.
For me, I am just r e a l l y short on time this week (and next week, and the week after that, and that...) basically until after New Year's, as I'm sure everyone has plans and things to do this time of year. But I will try to continue on each week! :teeth:

Helzon, that is great! I love her expression and style. If that is smoke above that tuft of hair on the right of the elf, my only suggestion would be to fix the juxtaposition around there. The smoke and hair kind of blend in together too much. Otherwise this is my favorite so far.
