Hello, I have formally introduced myself once before but it was long ago and I haven't posted much since then so I feel that it is only right to do so again. My name is Bobby and I live in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. I am 16 years old and have been drawing for a while now. I want to start a sketchbook thread on this forum because I think it will force me to draw more and allow me to improve my skills (hopefully). welp, thanks for lookin and please feel free to leave C+C.
Inspiration after reading Beowulf, I wanted to make some happy vilagers lol.

The first guy's kinda funny. Only tip I've got is to study perspective, that's where we all start. For the most part representational drawing is about describing form, and the ability to decribe is dependent on understanding. Be sure to read a lot of different books on art.

Just some quickies during the boredome fest known as school. Oh! and if anyone looking is taking 11th grade AP English then these are the correct answers for this particular Beowulf assignment too! lol

very cartoony faces. i do the same thing with my homework, lol. really, just keep up with your studies and look for solid interest in style, as you vary often in these here.
Would like to see some finished peices.

I am really tired of this comicky style coming out of my pencil lol and I believe (you may correct me if I am wrong) that drawing a comicky style picture all the time isn't doing anything for my skills sooooo I figure i would draw some anatomy to perhaps help me with life like drawing and also proportion. I started with leg studies and I really emphasized the shading, wich really isn't used to show where the light is coming from but more to show me where and how the muscles are formed. Down below it is a quickie Mr. Bush picture (I was intending on putting captions but I feel so depressed about it I dont think I will), I really don't like how it turned out at all but I am posting it and everything else I have regardless because then I can measure how much better my skills have gotten later on in this sketchbook. Now for the featured presentation lol

Check Ernest Norling's "Perspective Made Easy" for perspective. There are many theories and approaches to art, check Niccolaides "The Natural Way to Draw". "Drawing and Perceiving" is an abbreviation of Niccolaides book, along with some ideas taken from a guy called J.J. Gibson. Approach all these things critically, take what's useful and leave what doesn't make sense.
Okay, here's more: These two books have been very helpful to me. R.G. Hatton's "Figure Drawing". It's superior to any anatomy or figure drawing book that I've seen, he basically holds your hand through it step by step.
The second one is "Force: The key to Capturing Life Through Drawing". The theory in this book can be applied to many things: facial expression, folds in clothes. Pretty much anything in life can be analyzed with these methods.

ok great. thanks for the tips. I really haven't done much with perspectives at all. I imagine that since it is quite apparent in everyday life that I will probably get the hang of using it in my artwork or at least creating better compositions with it more often. I will definitely check those books out. for anatomy as of right now, I am using Anatomy for the Artist by Jeno Barcsay. I find it to be really useful. If there are any other book refferals don't be shy to post 'em.
