Hello artists !
In my inner hole I'll post as much of my sketches as possible.
I'm still learning alot about sketching, and I'm currently checking out Loomis's books for reference.
They are a big help for me.
Hope I can please some people with my sketches some day,
but I mainly hope to learn from the CA.org artists.
Here they come !
These are all studies of the human form I did in the last few days.

The last one with the pelvis bones hit me differently than the rest. I think that it would look cool in color with a dark background. Just an opinion, of course, but it shows a lot of character. Keep on with those anatomy studies.

Pennington - Thanks for the comments penn, I appreciate !
Heres another, I put some more time into these.
They still lack volume, though it was mainly a studie of the muscles, no excuse though. Need to work on it harder.

Very interesting though :-)

So I got a li'll bored working on the muscles and desided to make an awesome character.
Only it didn't really turn out as awesome as I saw it in my head, hehe.
The perspective seems wrong and the legs are, well, ...crappy.
Overall, I don't really feel the character concept works either.
Wasn't gonna post this one first, but here it is anyway.

I'm defenetly gonna update with more anatomy soon.
ParkerD - Thanks for the comments ! Lol, I wish I could make a living out of it, but then I'd have a loooong road ahead of me. Thanks for the kind words though.
Mario !! - Hey, thanks for the feedback mate ! The Arm studies are actually all pencil. Yeh, I know, I was really insecure working on that female character.
To tell the truth, and this is quite embarressing, it actually started out as a male character, lol.

Just used the mirror for a little reference.

The bottom two sets of faces are great. The one on the right becomes this wall of eerie floating faces, like twisted and haunted ghosts out looking to scare up some business. I can see a little Egon S. in your stuff as well as Mario's. A lot of expressive faces.
Jens
November 28th, 2005, 05:36 PM
hey hypro, cool stuff in here :)
you got these muscles to look really shiny and neat :)
I recently started doing anatomy again as well, I think it's usefull to learn where the muscles connect to by heart and also their function.
I see you see your own mistakes, like you pointed out yourself that the legs of that lady character were wrong. That's a really good thing. If you see what's wrong yourself all you can do is to practice untill you got it the way you want it. If you don't see your mistakes on the other hand, well then your just lost. Use both sides of your brain to learn how to draw :)
Doing quick sketches like that is the way to go, but make an effort to get it right. If you just do these without putting in any effort it'll take longer to improve (i should take my own advice).
So where in Belgium are you? School? Work? Anything :)

Mad - Hey thanks for the comments mate ! The Egon comparison is a great compliment man! I know the artist, but I never really thought about it. I do see it in Mario's sketches though. Thanks again for the feedback!
Jens - Wow ! Thanks for the feedback man. Yeh, working on anatomy is very interesting for me, It's something I force myself todo, it's always a bit boring starting on it, but after a while it gets really satisfying as you learn a lot.
I do see mistakes, I see most of my sketching's are mistakes, lol.
I'll take your advice and try putting more effort and thought into my sketches, even the quick once.
I'm a real big fan of your sketchbook, it's been such an inspiration to me and it's great having you reply on my sketchbook.
I'm from Belgium > West-Vlaanderen > Duinbergen (aan de zee).
I've been doing freelance 3d jobs for a bit over a year now, and just started to get really interested in sketching and 2d in general. So I try working at it whenever I can (and for a freelancer, that's alot :-)
Anyway, enough babling, more sketching!
Heres another page of portraits!
Oh yeh, and I put some hand studies on there to, real quick sketching on these.
http://www.onedollarfred.be/Sketchbook/SK_Fred_05_016.jpg
And to bore things a bit up, more anatomy.
The quick sketching seemed to pay of, as I was able to sketch this leg in half the time I did the arm studies. (it might be noticable).
Gues the portraits got my hand warmed up.

Ooh, more creepy haunting faces now complete with haunting hands. I don't know if you mind me seeing those faces as haunting, but I get a kick out of them; I find them to be very interesting. The calf on the leg muscle study is way too short. Actually, the calf part looks ok, it's where it goes down to the achilles tendon that needs lengthening. Keep up the good work.

I see you're going through the cult "loomis muscles" face for CA newbies :) and they're beautiful, better than mine when I started. I love your crazy faces too, although I do think you should keep it a little cleaner. On your muscles you have a really neat style with nice lines, but your faces have too much distracting lines.
For the hands make sure you: 1. have reference 2. Get one of the Bridgman books if you don't already have one. They're great reference and very interesting in theory.

I seem to get the same results when I do buildings, too. i'm never happy with them, so I guess I need to do more. I like the concept you have going on here, though. You should try to finish it, tighten it up some. So, is the city encroaching on the land or the land encroaching on the city?
Hypronost
November 30th, 2005, 03:34 PM
Mad - Yeh, main problem is finishing. The mattesketch is very unfinished and the buildings are just quick lines.
The city is on a lower plain than the forground plain. It's not that clear, lol.
Doesn't really mather, just practice. More (and hopefully better) will come.

Thanks for taking the time to checkout my SB. I see that you have been working on improving your anatomy. Great work first of all, your muscalature sketches are very well done. I have no crits other than to tell you to keep sketching every day. But I do have a suggestion that has helped me. When I get bored of sketching from my mind I often find photo ref's of interesting poses and attempt to sketch onto paper. To me it's an interesting way of seeing how your mind translates what you see from real life images. Anyways keep at it, I'll be visiting again:)

As I was looking at the top sketches i thought that the woman's proportions looked good, but maybe she needs a few more curves (it is inspired by Frazetta, after all), but then when I got to the bottom one, I didn't feel that she needed it so much. She looks good. Maybe her right thigh could be a bit longer at that angle. You'll post further developments, right?

good to see someone who is studying so many and especially so fast, but maybe you should go a step back and try to make some clean, clear and patient study. just to make sure you get a feeling for the pencil too, because your lines are very fuzzy and without this your drawings would be much more "true". go for quality, not quantity.
but keep them coming!

This is super-duper, I can see some huge progress between the updates.
I see that the drawings from May 12 went pretty well, and that's what improving is all about in my opinion. I like to call them 'checkpoints', meaning I study and study, then do a more finished-like drawing so I know where I'm actually going and I can compare them to my previous works.
No criticism this time really, just keep at your studies and draw after old masters or other artists whose works you like. I got my favourites and I try to channel their styles thru myself sometimes.
Just keep at it show some more updates! doylex

Heres some more ink stuff. I'm not to good with the pen.
I'm trying to loosen my lines and studieing key facial lines.
It's all a bit messy and I need alot more practice for sure.
Heres some from this afternoon and tonight.

Nice anatomy going on around here :)
And hey thanks for looking into my SB :) Since you were so kind, I'll return the favor and say something about your faces. It's great that you do so many of them and you did and will learn a great deal from it. Just keep the structure in mind and everything will go nicely. I'd suggest though, that you draw some portraits from ref inbetween. Can be SP, some girl from a photo, whatever. With learning from the real deal, you'll train your sense of structure, lighting and your eye!
Keep it up!

Nice head studies in here. Building the head from different angles is something I still struggle with and I think continuing to work like you're doing will be invaluable. I'd recommend a bit more variety in the types of faces you're doing, try some younger and some female too. And the pen is not looking too bad, a little messy but the lines have a nice flow, I think a bit more practice is all you'll need here. Keep up the nice work :)

Wow, you seem to be a pretty fast learner. Love those scribbly pages, anatomy studies and everything else is coming along nicely, too. You know, I was thinking about this thoughtful and right-to-the-point crit, but all I can say is keep going, you´re doing well.
