I gotta develop some characters for a musical here in Vienna. In addition to the studies and presentation drawings (coloured) of these characters the client wants some moodboards with the stagebackgrounds as well.
How do you charge for work like that?

1 million dollars (does the Dr. Evil pinky-to-the-mouth thing)

no no, seriously. I've never done freelance, so I'm no expert. But if I were in your shoes, I'd estimate how long that would take (1 month, 2 weeks, etc...), and compare that to my monthly bills. If it's a 1 month project, charge them 1.5 times your total monthly bills, and a little extra so you can put some money on the side. So if it's 1 month's work, and you bills amount to $2,000 a month, charge them $3,000. At least you got your butt covered for that month.

Don't know if that's a smart way to do it....

Honestly, i figure the exact amount of time it would take me, add an hour then charge a flat rate of the exact amount that would be paid to me if was being paid hourly. Then i do the work in half the time, because i love flat rate work. :)
