oh wait, here's another one...
I did both from scratch without looking at anything at all, and made my own color palettes for both..
perhaps that's why i think they look crappy, but my gf says they don't, so i'm trying to prove her wrong, so tell me what you think...

I am going to ask you what you think before I say what I think.
So what do YOU think of it?

i already said what I thought, I thought? lol.. umm I think the first one looks like complete shit and i was just messing around big time when i did it, just to feel around, the second one, which i did before i did the other one, i actually spent time on, and I guess it looks OK....... I don't know I hate most things I do and get frustrated that I can't keep up to my expectations.. =P

ok now you did =D you say you think they look crappy.
The way I would say it (in my own constructive way) is "they could use some work"
Your girlfriend is never going to be your best place to go to get the truth.
Not gonna discourage you, because I saw on your website that you are going to school for this. But if you want to get better you are going to have to put a lot into this. And from these 2 drawings I would say some more effort is needed. I am guessing these didn't take you very long, do 1-2 thousand more of these and then see where you are.
As you can see from some of the other guys around here, the ones you can cry because they are so good. They are the ones that did the 1-2 thousand.

I'd ditch digital media until you grasp the basics. From your website, it appears that you have fairly good ideas, but little to no practice behind your work. The flash animations look very rough and rushed.
I'd suggest studying heavily. Its great that you are going to school for this, so I'd definitely utilize what you have in front of you....a place that TEACHES this stuff. Get some books. Draw from life. Practice 1000 times a day. Otherwise your career in graphic design isn't likely going to pan out properly.

I was in your same position like 8 months ago...just starting out now knowing what the heck I was doing. Draw constantly from life...really really really critique your own work. Walk away and then come back and look at it...turn it sideways...look at it in the mirror...it will look off if it is. Keep pushing...if you want to be good expect at least 2 years of solid hard work before you see any pleasing results...just the way it is...not for the faint of heart.

Yeah, waht they said, draw people, draw people, draw people! Also, from your flash movie on your site I see you could improve by watching movies, and looking specificly at seeing how they are composed, how action leads the camera, keeping things on thirds, cutting fast to show action, ect...
But, you are in a great place to be in, try to absorb as much info from your teachers as you can, put the time into your work, and have fun!

MCM speaks teh truth... and he's living proof.
Everything you must do, must be drawing. You must eat, sleep, drink, piss, and breathe art.
If you saw The Matrix... think of how Neo views the hallway after coming back to life (in the end of the film). He sees everything as the matrix... and you must see everything as drawing... I believe it was said that the only difference between artists and regular people... is that artists see things in a certain way -- like Neo in the hallway viewing the matrix before him.
Good luck dude, it'll be a rough, but fun journey :)

It's crap! It sucks! Don't quit your dayjob!
Ok, now for an example of constructive criticism...
You're right that the first one is crap and it shows. It looks like it's supposed to be a hockey mask and somebody put it in the microwave and then lopped the top inch or two right off. The eye sockets are malformed and the edge is dented far too much.
As for the blue guy, he's poor in comparison to the professionals on this board and I would tear them a new one if they posted something like that now as a finished piece because I expect them to be better.
However, he is good for a first try and not looking at anything. I do like the fact that you seem to have a strong sense of lighting. He definitely shows some inventiveness with shapes and a general understanding of how a face looks (two eyes, a nose that's longer than it is wide a mouth and ears, etc.).
If you want some good things to draw, I highly recommend thoroughly exploring the reference thread on this forum. It's incredible and I can't stop singing their praises. Also, if you want to draw human(oid)s well (including their faces), you need to know the rules of how to do so. For once you know the rules, you can learn which rules can be bent and which can be broken.
If your thinking is systematic or logic-dominant like mine is, I would recommend finding a copy of both Dynamic Figure Drawing and Dynamic Anatomy... both are written by Burne Hogarth. I've found them immensely helpful. My portraits alone have improved enough since reading them that they are worth their weight in gold.
There. I'll probably get called out for being mean, but critiques usually hurt the first hundred thousand times or so and I hate it when people are only nice during them. If people are only nice and supportive during a critique, they're not telling you everything they're thinking and that is WRONG. It shows their lack of sincerity in trying to help you learn and denies you what you need to know to get better.
Hope that helps and feel free to ask more questions.
Chris
