It's been a while since I post anything. Here I go again wanting to better my art. C & C are very welcome and appreciated.
The Left pix is obviously pencil drawing; then brought into photoshop to color. The middle pix is the original that I copy from. She's a very cute friend of mine.

I would pay a little more attention to the shape of her head. Checking against the photo, her jawline and her hairline look quite different from what you have right now. Her right (our left) eye seems to have been placed too far as well. But I think you were just compensating for the extra width you have to her head.

i think using photo can be good as long as you know what you are using it for. looking at this i can tell you are copying the picture for the pics sake and not trying to understand the form of the face, and why the values lay across the face the way they do. the piece is good, however i feel it would be excellent if you were more attentive to specific things like bone structure (around the jaw bone), and the form of the eye, and how it is a form. you have painted it flat, and the eyelid when flipped open pushes back skin that creates a thick fold. also try putting down light information before drawing. it helps establish form more. then go back with pencil to support the form. kinda like working backward..............................or not. i hope it gets you to think

Medieve- thank u for the crit.
street_art_305 - took your sug (jaw bone) and went edit the piece. I dont quite understand what u said about the eye lid, > U may or may aware of this but most of asian people eyelids are hidden (cant see them = chinky eyes :). Thanx for the crit. :teeth:

Good work.
For me better with a sholder.
I think the shadow on the face could be little more deep. Need some light on nose and over lips.

That's a sweet portrait. You captured the eyes so nicely. The lips and nose are really cute too.
I think you can add a little stronger highlights on the nose tip and cheek, especially on the nose.
Also, I think you made her right eye (our left) too far out. I'd move it in a little more. The overal head shape is tilting to the right side a bit, you can see that easily if you flip the image.

I believe that the shadowing is really laid down well and it also conforms to the face. However, I do think that there needs to be a bit more of a hightlight around her eyes. If you look closely at the pic you can see what i mean.

damdischink,
there are just a few things stopping this from being a really good piece.
firstly, the tight composition.
even if the painting is just a head, give it a bit more space.
ones eye doesnt "travel" around a composition as freely if it gets caught up in tight little corners.
a bit more space will allow you to add hints of a shoulder.
(even just a line will do)
that shoulder could provide a much needed angle to the piece.
the second is the hair.
the hair is by far the weakest part of the portrait.
the purple highlights look unnatural.
eyedrop the color if needed.
although, the hair may appear to have some hard edges in the ref,
always make the majority of the hair FAR softer than you think.
then, juts a FEW strands will indicate the rest.
the soft edges serve 2 purposes...
the first makes the hair look light and soft.
the second is to make the head appear more round.
(round edges are always softer)
also, pay attention to the clumps.
the hair isnt made up just a billion little strands.
it should be a dozen or so "clumps" with a few strands and stay hairs.
(note the large split from her bangs)
color temperature of the skin is also important.
usually, one wants a warm/cool contrast... even if its super subtle.
your shadows are quite warm,
so i would push the highlights to the cool side of things.
this can sometimes be accomplished with just a single stroke.
a light lavender as the brightest highlight on the forehead would look good.
these are are small crits...
the drawing looks even more accurate in your painting than it did in the drawing,
well done.
the only real "error" i can see would be the shadow on HER left eye.
on OUR right, the white should be a little darker, and you are missing the shadow around the lower right edge.
converting both your painting and ref into b&w may help you see this.
oh yeah,
one last thing ( i swear!)
notice how we see a bit more of her forehead in the reference... its wider.
you dont always need to copy your reference,
though in this case i feel the wider forehead is a large part of her character.
good luck ;)

Here is what I came up with after taking most of the crits. The original and the re-edit is lay side to side for better comparision.

Yeah, I agreed more highlight in certain area. Thanks for the good input.
Look!!!!!!!!!!!!!
U R right; her right eye is too far out. The head is tilting to the right side (I couldn’t it until I lay the drawing right on top of the original pix). Appreciated your times and kindness!

Much better. I would brighten the highlight on her nose just a tad. Well done.
