Nice work dude.. but I have to say that the first piece does appear to be a notch up from the later two. The forms are nicer and definitley more accurate as opposed to the others.. they lack anatomy wise.
Sorry for the standard advice, but you as with me and most others, its to the learning board you go!!
Keep em coming, I like what you have and I know you will be producing some top shelf work in the near future.

yo chris, sorry i havent replied in a while.. .ive been really busy with projects and shiznaz, as you know. i think the samurai is a cool drawing, but i dont like the color selection or the style you colored it.. .i think you have a lot better colored pieces than that. i really dont like the guy below him (no offense), i just think that overall its a weak drawing. im not really feelin the design or the way you shaded it.. . it looks like somethin you would have done in 10-11 grade. im diggin the alien type dude below him though, but i think the shoulders are a little out of alignment. just a note/suggestion.. .on quick drawings like this, it might be cool to see a generalized light source, just a little shading to push the image out some (its not really necessary though, just a thought). the comp face is pretty cool, got a few suggestions though. 1. the proportions are a little off 2. theres not a set light source, and 3. i think you should try adding other colors to the painting.. you seem to stick to tints and shades of the same color, when you could be using other colors to really push the values in the right direction, and make the piece more interesting. the mech design is pretty sweet, nice to see something like this from you. its front legs dont look like they would be able to support the body though.. .they seem like they would need a joint or something in them to help with the support. also, you should think more about how the mech would move.. some of the joints dont look like they would have any sort of rotation or function to them. sorry if all this seems really harsh, but i think what you and me both really need right now are lots of REAL criticism, and not just people saying that they like our work. im not exactly sure why, but i think that you are going to have an artistic breakthrough soon.. ... your posts have so many different styles to them and some of the work is MUCH stronger than others, but i think youre on the verge of taking your art, and your style, to the next level. keep it up man.. . .im lookin forward to our drawing session this weekend, maybe i will finally start producing something that im satisfied with (and i ll be able to scan all my shit and finally get to post again). .. .hehe

Okie
In your last post:
1:Robots tend to need more structure to them, pull your forms out in rough straight lines and make sure your visualizing the object as if it where in front of you.
2: Cool one, though her left boot bothers me because the top of it is not in the same prospective as the other boot.
3: interesting, though the pose seems unnatural for a humanoid.
4: good form and style, though the red seems loud, I understand its just a sketch.

metaphysiks - good crits are hard to come by, best way is to give it yourself freely and hope to attract people to your site. Also it usually helps to ask directly what troubles you.
1) Looks good to me, but I'm a learner in markers, too.
2) Anatomy seems to be ok, but she wouldn't want to walk or run in these boots :D
3) reminds me of Star Wars concept art. Looks nice.
4) pose is too static, dress is too red, all in all too flat.
You asked for it ;)

meta, sorry i have torn up your shiznat yet.. .ive been pretty busy lately.
the robots left leg looks funny.. .like its bent in a strange way (unlike the right leg). the arms dont look like they would be functional because there arent any joints. also, you need to work on your values more. ..the shading looks very awkward and forced. ..watch your light source too. on the second one, it looks like you were going for a simple standing pose, but she appears to be off center, making the picture difficult to understand (yeah i know, im being VERY picky). i think the problem is the placement of the legs because both legs arent directly under the body. the design is pretty cool and easy to read, other than the ambiguous thing on her shoulder. the third is cool.. .nice and simple, looks like something out of star wars, but the face is a little off and the eyes are bugging me. the last one (in my opinion) is pretty cool. i like the asainish influence. i dont mind the red, but i think the pink needs to be more pronounced to balance the red out. i dont like the use of colored pencils and markers to color the dress either. if the colored pencils were used over top the markers i think that would work much better. maybe the overall design would be more pleasing if you had some asain embroidery or pattern on the red? just a thought.
as far as the crits go, i know what you mean. i dont get many either. you may want to post your stuff on sketches and doodles.. .i always seem to get many more crits on there than i do in the daily skecthbook. well, back to drawing... .. .

nice work metaphysiks! hey we're not too far from each other. :) I'm actually trying to get a job in tech support in richmond. (crosses fingers)
you're drawings are pretty good, i like the marker work. not much to say that hasn't already been covered.
i really like the robot, except for a few things. his back is bowed like he has vertebrae, but there are no joints visible, no joints in the elbows, and the top of the left leg is curved to much, when i think it should be straight (at least as straight as the right leg), considering it's made of metal. This guy looks like he could move pretty fast if he needed too. :)

hmm.. great stuff! i'll try to say something about each of them. :)
no.1
nice sense of action in this one. his right hand looks a little larger that the left hand. might be just me. his legs are huge! but i think that is the character, not a flaw. not sure about the line of the right side of his chest. looks a little off. might be just me again. a little hard to tell in an unfinished sketch with your over and under exaggerated proportions.
no.2
i would not want to get on this guys bad side. only thing i can really see with this one... i think the right shoulder pad should be shifted forward around the should a little. looks like it's twisted just a bit too far back.
no.3
don't see much wrong with this one. first impression: an armored arisocrat/diplotmat? :)
No.4
very very cool armour and gauntlets. overly feminine waist though.
No.5
alright! another fast guy! :)
the legs on this guy are great. did you take the idea from your previous robot concept? minor detail, in the left leg, the knee joint and hock look slightly twisted away from the viewer. looking at this more, i'm noticing now that there seems to be a little too much perspective in the hip joint. we shouldn't see so much of the front of the joint i don't think. other minor detail, his right hand is twisted slightly too far, showing slightly too much of the back of the hand. man i envy your drawing skill. :)
No.6
damn, this is sweet stuff. hmm... his feet look to be on the same plane, and his legs look straight, but his center of balance is tilted slightly. giving the impression that one leg is slightly longer than the other. man i have to learn to hatch and crosshatch. it's so much better and faster for basic sketches, rather than rendering out every drawing to give depth. i'm learning alot looking at your drawings. :)
no.7
graff writing? i know absolutely nothing about graff, in any way shape or form. i won't comment. :)
no.8
pen work! good pen work! :D samurai! woot! :) hmm.. love the swords, the armor.. left knee joint looks hyper extended.. like his leg is slightly past straight (not an impossible pose, but certainly not as comfortable as the rest of the pose looks) and the left knee-cap is a little off. should be twisted a bit outwards to fall in line with the leg i think. (or you could twist the shin-pad and foot inwards to fall in line with the knee pad, and that might fix the hyper-extension look too. :) )
mad skills dude! i hope to be this good someday! :D
of course, my eye might be a little off tonight too, it's late. if you disagree with any crits, you're probably right. :)

Really nice work here, metaphysiks! I love the way you bring out your frustrations in your characters ("my legs can't support my body!") haha, great....
You were talking early in the thread about tightening up your drawings... my suggestion would be to to place more definate lines.... for example, in the orangey, transformer looking robot, you've got a nicely defined area in the bottom left (the rounder part) where the lines are nice and tight. Bringing that sort of thing into the rest of your painting would be a great start! Also, maybe heighten the contrast.... like in the sketch of the chick on May 14, the part I like most is the elbow. It's a really defined, high contrast area. You seem to really know how those shapes come together.
Anyway, hope that helps! :)

not bad painter studies. the first one doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. .. it kinda looks like it would fall apart when you try to use it. the racer thing is neat, but the cylinders on the side arent aligned properly. i think what these are lacking most is depth. you dont have a lot of values in them.. .convert them to grayscale to see what your values look like. also, the machines lack texture. im not good at adding tecture to digital stuff, but i thought i would point that out. one of lungs recent submissions has great texture in it.. .maybe check it out for some more inspiration. peace out dog

hmmm, i think to make that pose believable, the left hip should be up higher than the right, since she's leaning like that... (that would also bring the knee up to lenghten the shin area that metalwinds was talking about) Or you could bend the left knee.....

Alrite mr Physikz, you're sketches are good, you have intermediate understanding of anatomy form and shadow, know your facial features generally. I'm rthinking that you're at the stage where you don't want your sketches to just be good anymore but you want them to be great. I asked you before how much time you spent on these, i was wondering because i think you would benefit from trying to push your pieces further, when you feel like its done thats the time you have to ask yourself..ok now what...instead of 20 minutes on a drawing try working for an hour..maybe even two...this will push your brain past what you already know and into things you dont know and also draw more on your creativity in a design. If theres something in particular you would like comments on point it out...for example i see that you know a little bout eyes, but did you know that the point where your eyebroms begin to slope down is along the sma ecurve as the eyesocket? So if you know where the socket is you'll know where to place your eyebrows..of course this changes with expression as the muscle moves but the socket still providse the structure underneath...

hey man, great stuff. on you're last post, there's a couple issues i've noticed. right beneath his bottom lip, on the left side (our left), there is a bulge that sorta looks like he has something in his mouth on the outside of his gums. maybe he's chewing tobacco though. :) i think it's the oval highlight there that gives that impression.
his ears don't look like they are attached to the head, but i get the feeling you roughed out the entire thing, including the ears, then detailed the face, and just haven't gotten to the rest of the picture yet, including the ears.
last thing, the purple over the eye on the right side of the painting looks a little too dominant. the purple in the rest of the picture is quite a bit more subtle. the purple over that eye could still be more dominant than any other purple in the pic, but i think maybe there is too much of a difference between it and the rest of the pic?
keep in mind this is coming from someone who can't paint yet and knows next to nothing about it. great stuff, want to see more! :) :chug:
P.S. i check your thread every time you post, i just don't always have any crits, being a noob to sketching. :)

Rock on my sketching brutha, your skills are ever on the rise, I do believe you'll be a master of the arts in the mere blink of the eye.
Do me a favour and do more, faster.
Ever tried sketching ref's... say from some standard household mags and spending like 2 mins on each one?.
Think correct placement over exact accuracy. (eg the eyes can merely be correctly places circles)

yes, i agree with wut stephenC and Lukias have mentioned. But if you find that sitting for more than 30min on one piece is more then enough for you (as it is for me some of the time) i find its more efficient to take 10-20min just laying down the basic form for an image (usually on my lunchbreak @work) then i leave it till i get home, now i go back with fresh eyes and darken in and or correct lines. sometimes it helps to have patients, to not force a piece to completion in one sitting. ~_~ your definatly coming along, nice work.

HELP!!! HOW???
Not sure if your reffering to painting when you ask me for help, cos if so then I'm probably not the person to ask.. considering I have painted all of 1 pic's in photoshop ever and that was with dodge n burn. haw.
Anyway, re your sketch work.
As I continue to sketch, more so now than ever and it seems to continualy be going this way.. and that is, as I said, speed work.. I am laying down *some* of my base sketches in like 5mins and then working them as I see fit. Some come to what I feel is completion in 20mins, some 2 hours. After a while you may get a feeling for each sketch, some you'll feel comfortable just leaving it at a semi rendered stage, some just as a line piece, others fully rendered with all the hoo dakies.
As they say, I picture speaks a thousand words.. so the best advice I could give you is.. go hunt jsweets sketch thread, check his amazing minimilistic sketch works. Try it, I am and I think it has already helped me alot..
little tips while I think of them..
--Try holding your pencil at different lengths, forget instant tightness(which comes with holding it near the tip) grip it towards the back end and let your lines go free, uncontrolled yet intentional, use mulitple lines to try find your forms.. amongst the mass of thatched lines you can often find those which work, sometimes better than you might have expected. (In some of my works.. hmm maybe more on the ones I haven't posted yet, you'll see alot of underlying lines that run willy nilly). I'm now enjoyin getting messy, rubbing out, sketching over.. all these new things I'm seeing thanks to getting messy and then re-working, I used to have to have a spanking white page, now I like it to look.. used. A couple of times recently I have rubbed out a pic that I had worked say, for an hour on.. but only rubbed half of it out and left bits that looked cool, asthetically cool, nothing that made any sense. Then I would draw over that area with my new pic and some strange shit would unfold and I get these unintentional, yet very welcome effects and shades.
-- I saw Stephen giving you some helpfull advice re eyebrows and I thought of a couple of handy things that have worked for me. Now these are by no means exact tips, if you will...
Generally someones eyes are one eye width apart, I follow this and it has seen me right so far.
An expressionless faces mouth(or just a mouth thats not expressing anything) will finish with its corners in line with each pupil.
-- Want someone to look relaxed or tired.. or "i don't give a shit".. then increase the height of the eyelid, there by decreasing the size of the actual visible eye area.
--On eyes: Recently I have found that you can construct really cool eyes, almost by spending as little time as possible on them. I literally do a couple of sideways ovals and then over chuck some other semi circles or random shady squiggles. I don't recommend trying to do a complete visable outline of the entire eye, plus the entire iris and then the pupil.. unless you know exactly what your doing and have the patience and presician then its pointless.. hey its pretty pointless anyway if you can get real and real cool looking eyes down in one tenth of the time.
Check jsweet and Wes9000, those amonget others have it sussed imo.
Any questions just ask
(though I may have rambled enough already)
HAppy sketching!

Hi Metaphysics,
These are getting better and better, I like the fact they are not worked up so much. Something you might like to try and its something I do alot is do some really small thumbnail drawings, for instance when I get an assignment I will do 5 or 6 versions of one scene or character, many times I'll get an idea for a final painting from that. It will open your gestures and dynamics up not to mention help with composition.
Good work man

July 27th, 2003, 02:06 PM

meta

July 27th, 2003, 09:31 PM
mr.physiks, haha, i never really thought of the way i clutter images as an ability. I usually don't think consciously about filling the pages but when i fill pages in my book not only am I thinking of ideas but also of just practicing technique. so its not neccessarily that i'm putting ideas on a page as much as just exercising my utensil. I have some pages that are filled just with hatching, straight lines, circles, etc. Just let things flow and don't be afraid to do an ugly drawing. Very similar to doddling in the margins of regular science class notes. and of course,...I just don't like to waste paper, it costs money that i could spend on more art supplies or a good meal.
also fillling pages isn't always a good thing, lots of times i have drawings that are lost under others and all the clutter.

whats up, good to see more sketches. okay, these are for the last 9 images.
pic 1(the girl with the hat): she reminds me of cammy from street fighter in a way. only thing that strikes me as odd is the distances between her eyes and nose. they all seem very stretched out in a sort of triangular way. and do more with ther gasmask guy, he looks cool.
pic 2: cool design overall, although the hands seem out of proportion in relation to one another, but of course that could have been intentional
pic 3: interesting ornate head design. maybe some type of writing or design to push out some parts?
pic 4: ur icon. cool beans.
pic 5: this image grabs my attention the most out of all the drawings. everything you have drawn is cool, especially his head and mask. However I want to see more. finish the arms and LEGS, especially the legs. too many people neglect these very important body parts, myself included.
pic 6: nice line weight here
pic 7: i see a lot of attention went to this drawing, but my question is: what is he doing?
pic 8: only thing that bugs me is how his pecs seem to stop at where his shirt begins. my assumption is that you drew the shirt first.
pic 9: a very nice rendering. the yellow is...loud
What I want to see from you is some more dynamic poses with action, because I know you are capable of it. Quick stuff. Of course when we conceptualize we all tend to draw characters just standing there and that's fine. So do I. But once you get the design down, how about doing some whacked out crazy poses tho? try and tell a story.
anyway, always good to see updates here. keep rockin

hmm..what i notice is that her right breast(our left) seems a little too far over to the left, maybe. also, the perspective conflicts a bit as im assuming we're looking up at her judging from the way you positioned the shoulders. should we be seeing the underside of her jaw some? other than that, the plants and stuff reflect her organic design well. my 2 cents

i like this group of sketches... especially the last one! The legs feel very solid and grounded. In fact, the upper body might be a little too small for such massive legs! I'd love to see that one finished :)

hey guys thanks for the crits. i think that it is very important to make sure that my characters are grounded and display weight, now if only i put them in environments. i scanned these images at different settings so they are a little different. maybe this is why they are not as clear. i may work on the last one still, well see.

iīm diggin that dewd concept-wise very much.
u did a good job with the big speculars to suggest a more reflective surface.
but maybe you could have made that plate material a tad darker or lighter than the skin tone since u worked on values.
i think that would make it even more interesting.
the colors of that painting are also nice. id really like to see an update on that >8)

Hey meta,
as promised I reviewed your sketchbook. Man, you have some really nice things going on here, but you're still unfocused. Free yourself of those dominating outlines, don't be so edgy in many places at once. Edges must be used sparingly in a drawing, more to underline a single point within the drawing, than to dominate it. The heavy outlines overweigh the lightness of your sketches. You also tend to overdo things, like weapons and armor. Try to be a little more realistic with your shapes, because your designs will become fiercer this way. I know, drawing allows you to exaggregate everything, but through overdoing your designs, they become childish, cartoony and funny. So, when you overdo a monster f.e., it wont look really impressive but rather like something to laugh about. Look at Lukias sketchbook for example, when he follows up exaggregation in his monster designs, he does it with intelligence, only sparingly and so, that the eye is not mislead into believing that the drawing was meant as a joke.
Anyhow, your work is still solid you just need to explore more.
Cheers!
Marko

Cool new stuff Meta, I'm enjoying your poses alot.
Watch out with that blend stick it can be addictive, it should be used sparingly if someone can tell you used it then that defeats the purpose, sort of like digital vs traditional media or airbrush vs a paintbrush, as an artist you should be able to get the same results through out mediums. Form and structure are the most important everything else is secondary.
Not sure if that was helpful, sure you heard all that a few times.
your sketchbook makes me want to work harder as well.

you got some good things goin on, but your execution is lacking. i think the main problem i see here is your anatomy. because i have the priveledge (or something like that. .) of drawing with you, i know how much you struggle with anatomy/proportions/faces. you erase a lot, but maybe it would benefit you if you dont erase at all. leave all the lines you put down on the page.. .. .think of what pratt taught us that night. i have been taking his advice since then and i think my drawings have improved a lot. doing a lot of reference work might help expand what you know about the human form and how certain muscles move. i guess this isnt really a critique on these pieces you have posted, but more of a general crit.
keep at it

thats messed up. anyway, u are definately right, no confidence in my lines, a problem stemming from a lack of knowledge of the things i am trying to draw. just like pratt said, u cant draw what you dont know. i need to get back to drawing from life. especially the figure. anyway, i understand what you are saying and i will try to work on it.

It has a really nice mood. I like the smoke form the cigarette a lot. His hips seem a bit wide though for a male, even without the holster. His face seems to flatten out around the nose and eyes. Im assuming the light is coming form the top right judging from the highlights on the scarf and right arm(his left). The presentation is there, im just not seeing the form popping out. metalwids is right about the colors. i would suggest trying a different approach of having a dark background on your next piece. the bright white is really taxing on the eyes.

November 5th, 2003, 03:11 AM
Ok, I took it into painter and worked in a light source. Help pop it out with some shadows from a harsh "cowboyish" sun... The light up to the top right makes it easy to folow where the shadow should follow the form.
http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/shadowpractice.jpg
on the image I just built about 3 layers to work in cool colored shadows (your image was warm, and cool colors will fool the eye into thinking it's more dynamic than the shadows really are) :D .... Eacy layer was set to an oppasity of arround 15%, whatever worked.... it's a nice way to lay down shadow becaue it retains the light information that's already defining your forms.
when that was done I took it into photoshop and auto-leveled it to fix contrasts and messed with the color.. I used little color-doge sparingly trying to be tastefull.

i think itīs not so good to start painting with a char on a white bg. if you have some kind of background even if just suggested values or colors, youīll have a better feel for the character and lightning and such.
but dun worry to much for as soon as you have done 10 uīll have improved a ton already.

well, as you know im not a good painter myself, but i ll tell you what i know. i think you get really highlight happy in your paintings. you dont stick to a strick light source enough and it flattens the painting. there arent enough general light and dark areas to make the figure pop out and look real. aside from that, i think your textures are really weak. .. to me, they make your pics look more like a bad jpeg than something you can touch. also, your highlights on the first pic look fake and dodge tooled. my best advice is to read the tutorials and do a lot of reference paintings. i dunno though, i still have a lot to learn myself.

thanks for the good crits, thats exactly what i was looking for. i think a lot of it will begin with understanding how color theory works. the texture thing is definately something i need work on and something i struggle with. i think as far as the unified lighting goes, i should try working from a unified drawing where the light source has already been established.
