ROUND #5

-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------

Johann Alaric, Mystic
Background character
SETTING: DEGENESIS
SUGGESTED MEDIA: Graphite :needle:

Johann Alaric is a mystic, living in the urban ruble of the world we know today. He is somewhere in his late 50’s through late 60’s.

He is a healer, wiseman, guide and council elder for his tribe, who dwell someplace in northern Europe, possibly near what was once known as Warsaw. His is a world of snow, ice, concrete, metal and brutality. *

Could I get some clarification on the term "Background Character"? I assume that it simply means he's not a major role, but someone who is in the background as far as characters go...but I'm double checking just to make sure.

Don't be turned off because you can't speak German - that's not the focus of this week's character. However, clicking around the Degenesis site *will* give you a feeling for the world that our man Johann dwells in, and that's the important thing here. Look to the visuals, not the text.

There is an english section of the forums on the Degenesis website, for those information hounds who want to know more about this world that Johann lives in. Here's a few key parts:

Obviously the visual presentation of the character is paramount, but are limited verbal expansions OK? I have a short backstory (just a few paragraphs) that helped solidify Alaric for me that I'd like to incorporate in the graphics. Is that acceptable? Though I wrote the backstory before finding the English Degenesis posts (making a few assumptions based on the excellent illustrations on the main site), it still fits fairly well with the core concept.

Seeing as how a good portion of my COW entries had text incorporated into the picture, I'd be a hipocrit to say "no".

Feel free to include it, but don't forget to keep the focus on your artwork! :perv:

"SUGGESTED MEDIA: Graphite" - So, I don't have to use it? I suck in Graphite drawing. Oregano?
That's correct. It's suggested, but no points lost if you don't use it.

I threw that in as a little extra challenge for those of us who really like pain and suffering because Marko is such an unbelievable graphite illustrator. I thought it would be fun, and a good excercise for us to stretch ourselves some.

So, no. You don't have to use graphite.

You gotta kick out the .. . graphite.... ?

oh yeh.. first CHOW.. first graphite piece.. :D :D

Anyways... for me this is like a personal best.. i really like how this came out for me, all senses of it - pose may be a little stiff, and the feet are the only bit that sucks for me.

http://www.andydesign.co.uk/best/CHOW5.jpg

Description:
Also known as the 'fisherman' for his noticable headgear, Johann is one of the founders of the Korun Rebel clan, tucked away within Warsaw. His tribal home and HQ is the stoney wreckage of the abandoned Warsaw Town Hall. The most recognised piece of his attire, being the Ram skull staff, is said to hold his magical and healing powers - glowing green when the erie powers flow. Attained during a battle in a dark winter Warsaw from a Skull bearing Physchonaut, the rams skull has become a symbol for the Korun Rebel tribe. Although growing older he looks strong to the untrained eye, but the skulls magical properties are a burden on the ever weakening old man, as he passses under the skulls curse... soon the old man may become one of them...

:)

Anyways,.... this is about 3-4 hours work (good for me) and im defintly looking forward to everyones entries :D :D

maybe a guest appearance by marko :D :android: :donk:

Since weve got time.. crits would be nice if i can change them and stuff :)

Hey Phat,

Nice quick entry, but a few thoughts, if you'll allow them:
1. that thumb of the right hand - try doing that pose and tell me if it's comfy cozy.
2. lose the text since it's not aiding in your design whatsoever.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!

Incidently, just so's y'all know - I'm actually not doing graphite on this one. Mine will be digital, but b/w with a touch of color here and there. But will also feature line art, which I don't often do in a finished piece.

Just so's y'er all prepared and such. Can't go'n hav'n folks freakin' out an' hav'n heart attacks er nuthin'.

btw - PHATandy, that came out real nice.

Juan, I agree with neoknocker, its rendered beautifully, great details, and the facial expression is excellent.
He does look tremendously epic though, the pose is looks very heroic. He may not look degenerate, but I don't think its necessesarily something negative, in fact I think it brings freshness to the topic.

The border is a bit distracting... maybe a simpler one could work better.

Anyways take what I say with a grain of salt, you have more experience so feel free to kick my ass :P

Hey Broken - do me a favor - study your feet and tell me what side the big toe is on each foot. I know your character is shamblin' along (aka walking) but he looks as though his achilles have seized up on him thus causing the heels to rise up and walk on just the pad of the foot.

Really good challenge this week.

I meant nice drawing bwkeough - I got your avatar crossed with Oregano - oops!
Redehlert - Thanks fir the idea - I've roughed in some highlights on the side of his ugly mug and now the picture seems unfinished without them, so I guess that they were meant to be! Good crit and suggestion.
It is a floppy hanging from his belt - I figured that perhaps in teh future, obsolete technology might still hold some resonance or idea about knowledge and so the disk is totemic, rather than practical.

Nice Standing!
Maybe some ambient light from the skull/staff can reach his face and clothing to provide some more depth and maybe he has some kind of glow in his right hand of a different hue to compliment the other side of the face (ya know, like those faces with blue lighting on one side and orange on the other - very dramatic).

Because my computer is a piece of crap and is about to become a paperweight, I've decided to post my UNFINISHED entry up. I hope my computer will last the next couple of days. It would be nice to finish my entry before it chokes to death on its own corrupted data. Pray for mobo.

Just have to say, awesome work so far. Hurricane and Andrew, my favorites so far.
Hurricane, awesome job with the composition and just overall dramatic feel to it. Lighting and the figures position are sweet!
And Andrew, Just an awesome character design not to mention style of painting him. Really gives a nice feel to the character. And plus I love your painted work.
Oregano its great to see you just busting those different compositions and messing aroudn with painting. I'm impressed just by that. I was going to try a whole scene, but ....I am far from that...very far.

Wow, this looks very promising. CHOW is becoming VERY popular oreg, and these kinds of topics doesnt hurt at all. :D There are some REALLY tight pieces in this round, i espescially like the expressions going on in oreg and interceptor's pieces.

Here's my idea sketch. I dont like it tho, so im starting all over. Pardon the horrible scan.

I tried to make this guy fairly close to the realistic idea of a mystic in the Hindu or Bhuddhist sense. He's clothed pretty lightly despite the cold weather, as an ascetic might be.. hopefully well contrasted with the heavy winter gear of his companions. He is off leading his tribe onto a greater place.. might update with some tweaks but mostly like where this is at, at the moment.

Okay, here's an update on mine. It's been *so* long since I've done a full pencil drawing (as opposed to prep for a painting) that I've forgotten the grace and subtlety that pencil offers. This was fun - thanks to all for convincing me finish it out traditionally! :teeth:

Hello fellows,,

I wanted to post an entry for this one real bad... Thought about it and figured I would do one in digital format and one in graphite....I figured I needed to use any and every possible means to show the character the way I see him in my head. Did the digital one first,,,, I brainstorm better in photoshop than I do on paper. :^^;: After I had an idea of all the forms in the round, I felt better to draw the graphite.

anyway,,, There are some awesome entries here.... standing, andy ley, sinix, jakkaS...oreg (that really looks like degenesis) props.. lots more.

here it is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v198/Brutillus/chow5.jpg

He's wearing an old police helmet with goggles, now a relic of a bygone age. he has his pipe for smoking various substances, perhaps even the "Burn" drug to which Marko refers in his explanation. around his neck is the keyboard from an ancient computing device, which to him seems like an arcane artifact, proof of some incredibly powerful civilization
his face is tattooed with mystic runes, and he carries an improvised hatchet-club and a rare handgun for protection.
sorry if it's a bit rough, kind of last minute.

Oregano: awesome shit, reminds me a lot of Marko's own style. the figures' heads look a little large, but I like the interesting poses and set-up (not just your typical dude standing there)

Nice work, bwkeough, I like the old rifle and the crow on a string(?) the coloring is nice, too

RobHughes : nice clean pencil work, although I have to say he looks like a pimp as much as a shaman.

It' been great getting into this one. I think it's my first COW. Did a few DSG's but I feel it's time to graduate to the big boys playground. I'm strugling to advance to the next level. I still rely too much on what I know and not what I feel.

There have been so many great entries. Marcos AW must be responsible, keep living the dream Marko.

Interceptor Wow, You got to let us see the finished thing.
JakkaS Very well rendered but I just dont belive it. Anatomy issues.
Masque Not quite on the money for me. Just nothing about this sais Degeneris, not the colour, not the setting, not the type, nothing...
SiniX This, on the other hand, is spot on ;accepting his unperparedness for the climate.
Kodakromec I like the wode face but not much else
Bwkeough Youv'e got all the elements right. I realy like this one, In a few years when your anatomy and composition improve and if you keep your eye on the detail and content, like you have in this one, you will be realy good.
whomi Realy good, but you lost me with the claok. It's a cop out and not rendered well enough to be convincing. Still thank you for the IV bag, I missed that one on my brainstorm and added it after I saw yours.
Bumski Too dark. Maybe it's my monitor but I cant read any detail in the dark areas. Your websites the same.
neoKnoker pass
Brutillus Hard to read
Evil Sloth Heavy black line ..eye pain.. & kangreoo on a stick!
Carifex....what were you tinking? I see where you are comming from but I expected more than a reliance on cliched heroic anatomy

Brutal crits for today, regrets for tomorrow.
I like mine best but I have been drinking since six O'clock, Tomorrow all I'll be able to see will be the glaring errors.
My misery will be total.
