This isn't bad, and while the black solids are helping out with forms, the hatching isn't doing such a great job. There are large tracts where there should be different values descibing curves and folds, but we just get steady consistancy, indicating no such thing is happening, which really flattens the image.
The anatomical irregularities are also a bit of an issue. The eyes are enormous and the torso seems rather short, even given the foreshortening.
It's not bad, but as a hatching exercise, I can't say it's a tremendous success.

I can see what dogfood's saying about the hatching, but it really doesn't bother me too badly.
While the hatching doesn't help describe the 3-D forms very well, it DOES present a strong graphic image which I think is quite successful.
I agree that the eyes are a little too big, and also the gun in his hand is not reading very well. Hope you keep posting!

this working well. i would look at the angle that the viewer is looking at him and the size of his head. hatching is good when some white is left in. and there is minimal white. but i like it. totally different from what i do so i can't complain.

The lack of feet is distracting. If you have an entire figure sans a little teeny part of the body it seems really unfinished.

OK, by earlier brief comment was due to the fact I am a photobucket rookie.
Now... Let me start off by saying i'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I love this site, especially the sketchbook sections. Those guys have opened my eyes...and isn't that what it is all about? What you see? Anyone can drag a pencil across a paper. It's observation that separates the levels of talent out there.
That said, I'm just getting back in the game. I started drawing again two years ago after a fifteen year break. Had an epiphany a couple of years ago... I follow politics closely.... I'm a news junkie. Given my past hobby of drawing, I thought I'd become a political cartoonist. Until then, I had never picked up artistic pen. I searched a few art message boards for pointers and found conceptart.org. None of my previous work would be appropriate here. I have posted a few of my cartoons at drawingboard.
Dogfood and emily...thanks you're right about the eyes...BTW, it has since occured to me to break up lines in my hatching. I don't know why I had to draw these long solid lines throughout.
street... thanks
necro...maybe you'll like the final version better

since you have quite a bit of white in the water you might consider just a little touch more white on Jack there. a bit on the headband, some maybe on his shoulders, sleeve and the handguard. hatching is a pain and takes patience when using it to this extent. I think you've done a good job.
