Similiar to the "The Kola Superdeep Borehole Project" where scientists attempted to drill as deep as possible into the earth's crust which started in 1970
and ended in 1989, the project was resumed in 2012 with far more interesting results than in the former attempt. After intensive drilling for months they
stumbled into a hollow space with a cooler temperature, once they sent a team down into the hole the team at the surface got a mindblowing transmission.

"It's.....it's a tree..it is absolutely massive!!!"

Once the news spread it took the world by force, scientist's were scratching their heads trying to figure out a theory for the odd placement of this "tree",
religious foundations refused to believe it at first and later on started to call the place "hell", "underworld" and started to quote old writings.
Until today the "Underworld" which it is called by the public is not solved yet but research is still under way.

BRIEF: Your assignment is to design a scene from a new Level of Tomb Raider (I hope you have heard of it.) This would, of course be a huge stretch for me since I have never played it.

REQUIRED:
Some specific goal object, and he route to it should be obscured and obstructed. The deadline for this round is solid as it would be in a realworld situation. The resulting Environment should look like it belongs in the world of Tomb Raider. So I guess some research will be necessary.

Required elements:
Two choices. One Less traveled.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

EOW 117: Final Burning. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=167700)

BRIEF: Marine Battle in the time of the Napoleonic wars.

REQUIRED: Battle, Ships, Ocean.

Possible reference Materials include: Hornblower novels (Forrester: 'Captain and Commander' or all the novels of Patrick O Brian.

The ships should be researched and any one who makes the flag on the mast fly the wrong way will be summarily eliminated from polling.

Fantasy elements are acceptable as long as the time period is clear. Your entry can be combined with your CHOW entry, in that if you can include the character as part of the scene that will be fine. All Chow and Eow rules still apply.

You have three options with this contest:

a) Do a more illustrative piece and combine CHOW & EOW and meet the requirements for both contests in one image (a battle on a quarter deck, for example)

b) Do two illustrations seperately, one with a naval battle, and one just with the hero, CHOW link here. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=166407)

-or-

c) Only do one of the two - you don't really need to do both, but it'll be more fun!

EOW 128: Final Burning. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=176462)

BRIEF: The second section of T.S. Eliots' poem "The waste land" The imagery is incredibly evocative. I am asking not for the incredible detail and specifics, but for the feeling of the scene.
II. A GAME OF CHESS

The Chair she sat in, like a burnished throne,
Glowed on the marble, where the glass
Held up by standards wrought with fruited vines
From which a golden Cupidon peeped out
(Another hid his eyes behind his wing)
Doubled the flames of sevenbranched candelabra
Reflecting light upon the table as
The glitter of her jewels rose to meet it,
From satin cases poured in rich profusion;
In vials of ivory and coloured glass
Unstoppered, lurked her strange synthetic perfumes,
Unguent, powdered, or liquid—troubled, confused
And drowned the sense in odours; stirred by the air
That freshened from the window, these ascended
In fattening the prolonged candle-flames,
Flung their smoke into the laquearia,
Stirring the pattern on the coffered ceiling.
Huge sea-wood fed with copper
Burned green and orange, framed by the coloured stone,
In which sad light a carvèd dolphin swam.
Above the antique mantel was displayed
As though a window gave upon the sylvan scene
The change of Philomel, by the barbarous king
So rudely forced; yet there the nightingale
Filled all the desert with inviolable voice
And still she cried, and still the world pursues,
'Jug Jug' to dirty ears.
And other withered stumps of time
Were told upon the walls; staring forms
Leaned out, leaning, hushing the room enclosed.
Footsteps shuffled on the stair.
Under the firelight, under the brush, her hair
Spread out in fiery points
Glowed into words, then would be savagely still.
REQUIRED: Connection to the poem, in visual reality and evocative power. Good luck.

Here is a link to the rest of the poem if you are curious... fair warning, more of it may appear on these pages: A Game of Chess. (http://www.bartleby.com/201/1.html)

EOW 143: Lothlorien POLL
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=189770

BRIEF: EOW 143 Lothlorien

From J.R.R. Tolkien:

During the Second and Third Age of the Sun, the Elf-realm in the Golden Wood to the East of the Misty Mountains, was often called Lorien, but its true name was Lothlorien, and its history is told under that name.

The fairest Elf kingdom remaining on Middle-earth in the Third Age of the Sun was to be found in the Golden Wood just to the east of the Misty Mountains beyond the Gates of Moria. It was called Lothlorien, the "land of blossoms dreaming", which was also called Lorien, "dream land", and Laurelindorinan, "land of the valley of signing gold". In this wooded realm the golden-leaved, silver-barked Mallorn trees grew. They were the tallest and fairest trees of Middle-earth and upon their high branches the Elves of Lothlorien, who were called the Galadhrim, or "tree people", made their homes on platforms called telain of flets.

For the most part of the Galadhrim were all but invisible, for they moved about among the high limbs and wore Grey-Elf cloaks possessed of magical chameleon-like qualities. Here the Noldor Queen, Galadriel, and the Sindar King, Celeborn, ruled; and some part of the brilliance of the Eldar-kingdoms of ancient times could be glimpsed in this realm. Lothlorien had one great-palace called Caras Galadhon, the "city of trees". It was a royal hall built on the crest of a high hill where stood the tallest trees in the wood. This hill was walled and gated and then encircled with other great trees. Modelled on the Grey-Elf kingdom of Doriath in the lost Berleriand, Lothlorien was similarily protected by the powerful enchantment.

Galadriel was the highest ranking Eldar remaining upon Middle-earth and by the power of Nenya, her Ring of Adamant and of Water, she cast a spell of protection around Lothlorien, so enemies might not be able to enter and making it visible to the Eye of Sauron. For nearly all years of Third Age, Lothlorien remained apart from the struggles of the other peoples of Middle-earth, but during the last years of the Age, the Fellowship of the Ring entered the Realm. Fleeing the servants of Sauron, they found rest and shelter, and by Queen Galadriel they were granted magical gifts that renewed their strength and will.

BRIEF: Christopher Columbus never set foot on America. It was never discovered! 350 years pass from the year it should have been discovered. It is the year 1842, and a new voyage is finally successful... but what does this new world reveal?

Illustrate a fictional take of the New World at it's moment of discovery. Mayans, Native Americans, Aztecs and Incas were prolific cultures in science, astronomy, math, etc. Envison what their world could have evolved into. Vast architecture/cities, wild inventions, complex society, ancient alien visitation? Be bold and go wild since there's no need to be historically accurate in your representation!

This can be any part of America, not just North America alone. Also keep in mind that it doesnt need to be a coastal setting - they can be arriving into the heart of the continent. Backround stories are optional this week, but a captain or explorer's diary would provide an interesting outlook on your envisionment.

E.O.W. Round 156: Temple at Uppsala POLL
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=207663

BRIEF:

Taken from Wikipedia:

The Temple at Uppsala was a religious center in Norse paganism once located at what is now Gamla Uppsala. Sweden attested in Adam of Bremen's 11th century work Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum and in Heimskringla, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. Theories have been proposed about the implications of the descriptions of the temple and the findings (or lack thereof) of the archaeological excavations in the area.

In Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum, Adam of Bremen provides a description of the temple. Adam records that a "very famous temple called Ubsola" exists in a town close to Sigtuna. Adam details that the temple is "adorned with gold" and that the people there worship statues of three specific gods that sit on a triple throne. Adam describes that near the temple stands a massive tree with far-spreading branches, which is evergreen both in summer and winter. At the tree is also a spring where sacrifices are also held. According to Adam, a custom exists where a man, alive, is thrown into the spring, and if he fails to return to the surface, "the wish of the people will be fulfilled."

The existence of the temple disputed, and there's no historically factual details of what it looked like. There are just two written records - none of the writers ever saw the temple and there are few archaeological records. You can choose to follow the wikipedia briefing or just have at it loosely.

EOW Round 157: LARGE WATER-FILLED KNOTHOLE POOLS IN SOFTLY-UNDULATING TREE-FORM LAND (POLL)
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=209794

BRIEF:

This round is presented by Lord and Caretaker of the DSG, William B. Hand!

The idea here is that this sweeping, rolling landscape is formed not of rock and dirt, but of some ginormous ancient tree-like lifeform whose growth has been horizontally oriented, and has covered the original landscape like a skin. We might see vertical extensions of some sort off in the hazy distance, and maybe some nubby knots that rise above the surface, but dominating our attention are these lovely ponds created by these scattered irregularities. The general mood should be magical and lyrical.

Of course, there might be some little fishes or bugs flitting in and around our semi-permanent pools, and maybe the small figure of an explorer or two just to suggest the scale.

EOW Round 159: The Symplegades POLL
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=213750

BRIEF:

This should be done in any time/setting period except Ancient Greece. You don't have to use actual rocks, but something that represents them. Same with the ship/dove. But you should represent all those elements. Think of the elements of this concept: the rocks, a dove, and the Argonaut's ship as symbolic items. If you choose, you can create your own reinterpretation of 'The Symplegades' but this week's contest is also subject to your own creative version. Any questions, post them!

From Wikipedia:
"The Symplegades, or Clashing Rocks, also known as the Cyanean Rocks, were, according to Greek mythology, a pair of rocks at the Bosphorus that clashed together randomly. They were defeated by Jason and the Argonauts, who would have been lost and killed by the rocks except for Phineas' advice. Jason let a dove fly between the rocks; it lost only its tail feathers. The Argonauts rowed mightily to get through and lost only part of the stern ornament. After that, the Symplegades stopped moving permanently."

I figure it might be cool to illustrate the settings for this opus written by Edvard Grieg. Now...you can go ahead and stay true to the Peer Gynt vision with it's ogres and the lopping off of fingers if you'd like, or you can go ahead and let inspiration guide your interpretation. What's important is to capture the mood of the music and to represent the title faithfully: a Mountain King's Hall (for that matter, what IS a mountain king?)

EOW 162 :: EOW/COW Crossover - Bridge the Gap POLL
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=219407

BRIEF:

COW/EOW CROSSOVER!

Bridging the Gap

The hive mind. Cooperation. Existence as a singular unit. Seamless collaborative measures for the survival of the colony. Whoever designed our universe was a curiously efficient architect when it came to strange science and the natural instincts of creatures - forming bridges, for one, is a sight to see and an extraordinary “concept" if you will.

COW REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES:

Your challenge this week is to design a bridge forming creature that’s able to work together with it’s many relatives to overcome obstacles, a task no single creature of this select species could accomplish by itself. Think about reasons why the creature would need to build these gestalt bridges. Focus on the anatomy of the creature. Your creature should clearly portray a member of this species, rather than illustrate its bridge-building technique, which is what the Environment section of this challenge is for. However, the environment you have in mind will drastically affect the design of your creature, and how it has evolved to become a competent bridge builder.

EOW REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES:

Your challenge this week to design an environment depicting how this collective effort of bridge construction goes down. There’s a slight dilemma with the crossover aspect of the theme because technically your environment should show the creatures building the bridge. No creatures, no bridge, right? There’s also an additional option in this case: You may collaborate with an artist from the COW contest and use their creatures in your environment.

NOTE:
You’re NOT required to participate in both activities but you’re encouraged to if you’d like to design your creature and the environment it lives in as well.

My creatures are small bugs that build bridges across rivers and creeks in order to transport their queen to new feeding grounds.

To build the bridge they gather all sorts of stuff from the forest: bark, branches, other insects, small logs, and they use sticky slime from glands on their backs to piece these things together. This slim glows bright orange when it hardens.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=223828

Brief:

Earth
Air
Fire
Water (can be ice)

A place where dragons are born... with an elemental twist. Choose your element from the four listed above!

Winner: Moai

Jacobi Hawkeye, treasure hunter extraordinaire, lowered himself into the dragons' nesting caverns. The sight that greeted his eyes was more majestic than even an experienced adventurer such as himself had been prepared for. Yawning fissures emitted strange turquoise light, suffusing the vast space with an eerie, misty glow. Globular columns of rock, shaped by the dragons' own strange powers, rose like solidified smoke from the cave's floor to the ceiling. The columns were honeycombed with irregular nesting cavities, many of which flickered and glinted from the incubation fires within. Several dragons were visible, emerging from their dens and gliding ponderously from column to column. Even those earth dragons, largest and heaviest of the great drakes, were dwarfed by their vast, cavernous hatchery.

EOW 168 :: The Glasshouse That Lived Forever
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=224849

Brief:

A mysterious plague has caused a mass death of most of the Earth's plant life. The eco-friendly green movement isn't doing much to help the shortage of lumber throughout the world. Just one last tree remains.

What species? A mighty sequoia, a gnarled olive tree or something more ordinary? A shrine/temple/museum/stasis field/memorial park has been built, including the glasshouse that houses the tree. This tree is contained in a "protective" glasshouse for a dauntingly bleak, but necessary purpose - to remain for eternity as a beacon of hope, a testament to a legacy of our civilization coexisting in harmony with nature. Survival.

I've noticed people usually tend to avoid depicting interiors so I'd like them to use this topic as an exercise to challege them on an interior with all the organic details, lights, reflections, textures, etc. it implies. Interior view preferred/mandatory.

Winner: Corrick

"Oh I remember it being packed in there, everyone wanted to get a look. Not like they hadn't seen one before, but this one became kinda special, you know? Even with the las-nets and restrictors people would try to get closer... but no one much goes anymore. Of course everyone supports it, with the tax and everything and fundraisers for repairing the holo-glass and token gentech research. Mostly though it's just the old dome everyone passes downtown... We're proud of it though... I mean, who gets to honestly say they have the last tree on the planet... sad, but... who can say that?"

Brief:

Design a Shanghai of the future. It doesn't get any better than this...

Winner: snatti

From 2050 to 2112, unemployment went up by 70% and the average citizens were forced to move to the outskirts of shanghai. In time, the beautiful city of Shanghai started to slowly turn into another slum in the world...

Through the century, rapid development and advancement in engineering spawned seemingly endless amount of super towers. Concerned about the quality of life from a very vocal public, the Government designated specific land plots to preserve the natural parks that near the Huangpu River. In response, powerful real estate moguls crowded all their skyscrapers into the same tiny spaces. The result? A plethora of 500th+ floor towers that meld and blend into each other.

EOW 170/IDW Crossover :: Secret Society Headquarters POLL
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=226859

Brief:

This week is a special crossover round with the Industrial Design of the Week activity, co-hosted by Pixie Trick. The EOW topic is Secret Society Headquarters while the IDW topic is to design the Secret Society's relics and any other accessories you wish to provide in addition to those items. What the society is all about is up to you, but be sure to prepare a back story to support your work.

No existing secret societies please! I'm saying this with regret because it'd be really cool to see all of your interpretations of an Illuminati monument But I digress, it's not meant to be this week. Creativity and your own imagination both come into play here and it should make for a memorable institution..

To get the most out of this topic it is best to participate in both parts though it isn't mandatory.

Winner: snatti

Story: In 2015 the world stood for the first time under one banner, one nation it was not long before dictatorship corrupted the new founded worldnation and in 2019, the world was controlled by a handful of people who managed to to bride their way to power, but a secret society resistance was formed in ready to fight for the sake of the human rights and freedom, and they are spreading thro out the world ,still they are in small numbers and they keep growing stronger by each day.

EOW 171 :: Ho Chi Minh Grand Hotel, At Sunset POLL
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=227885

Topic brief:
“We invite you to begin your Vietnam sightseeing with Ho Chi Minh Grand Hotel, the tallest building in the world. The Grand Hotel skyscraper is a world-class destination and a testament to how far gravity technology has come. The world's tallest building is completely airborne!”

This week’s topic is somewhat of a continuation of the topic Shanghai in 2112 in the sense that it’s another Asian science fiction setting.

Equipped with a pool, parking lot, and a nice view to boot...the hotel should be located in the sky, with any kind of hanging structure or anti gravity technology, and you are to design a scene at sunset or dawn for a more dramatic feel. Imagine that this picture will define the hotel for an advertising campaign or something that’d appear on an attraction brochure.

E.O.W Round #174: Novosirbirsk, Hidden Submarine Base Under Iceberg POLL
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=230385

Brief:

Exerpt from The Avalon Files, ////TOP SECRET//// Archive:

"When the most secret division of the Navy took command of the first submersible flotilla commissioned in decades, it was rumored that it would be a powerful instrument of the submarine arm. What was to come of this new and mysterious asset to the Naval Fleet was unknown...but what was known was that it would change submarine warfare forever."

Winner: artozi

I decided to make a base attached to a side of iceberg, which is also capable of small movement control, due to huge turbine (propeller). Technique-wise is painted on top of basic 3d mesh (so much easier in such complex geometry). I implemented also a few textures.

I hope you like it,

"Far inside the mystic rainforest, lays a valley that once was the orchard of proud giants. These ambitious entities cultivated a garden whose paths were drawn with prodigious complexity, so as to keep all scents trapped in forever. This prowess eventually made the gods jealous: with vengeful magic, they cut down every tree, tied the ambitious giants to the dead logs, and let wild vegetation regain the valley and turn the blasphemous grove into an emerald maze. According to legend, the maze was so perfectly drawn that it's scent still haunts the abandonned garden thousands of years later, alleviating the souls of the giants in their eternal punishment."

That one was tough! It was the first time I was drawing mechas and an almost naked guy under umbrella I went for showing more interior scenery, and trying to suggest nearby sea, rather than painting it directly. So the action takes place in post-industrial building which is the perfect place to get into the mood of selling second hand mechas. Intergallactical characters strolling around, merchants argueing - selling tension that reminds me of such bazaars I've been to myself.

E.O.W Round #177: Magic Carpet Racing World Cup POLL
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=232976

Brief:

In ancient times, an alliance of sultans and kings set out to create a new competitive sport pitting magic carpet fliers against each other in an all out race of epic proportions. The rules varied depending on the hosting country or region, as the terrain all over the world was wildly different and sometimes very treacherous. Before being abolished as a sport by Badr the Dreadful because he was allergic to carpet fabric, the Magic Carpet Racing World Cup had reached it’s zenith and was truly a fantastic sight to behold during that time period.
