I was considering photography as a major (or atleast a minor)
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the Photography programs offered at Ringling, Sheridan, ect?
Or are there any schools one would recommend for photography?

I would also be interested in knowing this, and further more, what schools would go so far as to offer scholarships on photography alone? This would actualy be an inquiry for a friend of mine, a natural talent for photography but shes considering alternatives to art school because of cost.
You would have my thanks as well for any information on this!

Also, what do they look for in a photography portfolio, or what do they prefer?

I've heard that Rochester Institute of Technology is pretty good. I've also heard that Parsons School of Design at the New School is pretty decent.
As for the portfolio, my guess is that they look probably that you have a grasp on some of the basic concepts like the theory of the thirds. That you have a natural eye, capture great colors, interesting subjects...
I mean, for a basic portfolio based on one of my photography courses, these are the types of photos that my teacher liked the best:
Bicycle wheels (2 or 3, photo of just the wheels), a really nice picture capturing a shadow, experimenting with depth of field (3 objects in a row, focus on one), experimenting with shutter speed (taking a picture of a bicycler and focus on him as he's riding by, and then focus on the background as he rides by). These are just some basic examples, and basically just based off of what my photo teacher enjoyed the most... just to sort of give you an idea of what he would probably look for in a portfolio.
Also--- I think it's a very good idea to have a 2 photos side by side in your portfolio, one showing how say the bicycler was in focus, and then the other showing how the background was in focus... I think they'd love that, and would appreciate your creativity. Plus, you're experimenting, I'm sure they'll love that too.
I don't think Photo is that hard of a major to get accepted into.
Just make sure your stuff is presented very neatly, and your slides look perfect.
