Serren, Transdimensional Dragon Hunter

Serran is human, but from an alternative dimension, so there’s some oddness about her that you can’t quite place.

She is controlled, manipulative, treacherous, vile, cunning, a murderer and a technophile, loving all sorts of technology with a special love for Jules Vernish mechanical aparati and gadgets. She views pretty much everyone else as a tool of some sort to be used or exploited for her own ends, including her employers.

Physically, she’s roughly about mid height (about 5 ½ feet), slight of build, with pale skin, though not albino. Her features are not ugly, but not unpleasant to look upon either. She typically wears an authentic WWII American Bombardier’s Jacket, and often wears a necklace or belt made from dragon teeth (small ones).

Okay, wow. Another record breaking round people. 73 entries. Unbelievable. :x

However, I do want to point out a couple of things this round:

there were a *number* of pieces that I came thisclose to not including but decided to let slip by, and one that didn't make it at all.

Who they are is irrelevant.

However, I want to note that this will be the last time I'm nice. TOO MANY SKETCHY PIECES.

Push yourselves and finish the work, otherwise from here on out it will not be included in the voting round. I'm sorry, but I've got to be a hard case on this. The rules are posted at the top of every round. Please review them.

Cheers, and good painting!
~Oreg.

ALSO, if I missed your piece, misspelled your name, included your pic but not your name, included your name but not your pic, I apologize - just PM me and I'll take care of it.

If it's not too much trouble, could you maybe PM the people you were thinking of cutting. :[

Man there are a lot of entries I like, but in the end it was a very tough desicion between Hurricane and m@.
In the end I voted for m@., but if I could I would have voted for both. Really nice charachter designs on both, love the gear, and the presentation.
Runners up were Johanni and goran.

sve: great expression and how she twirls that necklace! It looks sketchy and there are some proportion problems but very nice! I would have liked to see this more finished though.

Good stuff people, really. There are so many entries and they look really cool.
Thank you Oregano for organizing this : )

holy shit!

so many entries, there's no way to crit them all.

favorites include sinix, oregano, and r m.

but i'm voting for m@ on this round. such a good image, the character really comes through. the rifle is outstanding, and the pants. . . .man, those pants, they just take the cake.

Sinix - your style is getting clearer and clearer with every pic i see from you. good way to be recognizable. it rocks.

magicgoo and standing - i think you both tie for scariest looking chick, but standing, i still think your's looks too much like a dude.

andrew ley - if your's was more finished i probably would have voted for it. it's a great start, but it just screams "more please".

bluefooted - that's just awesome. is it digi or really watercolor? the only reason i didn't go for this one more, is that it doesn't really say "dragon hunter". to me it seems more like "dragon friend".

posh - a hottie as usual. great image as always, but i'm not crazy about those hand things.

good work all around, glad to see so many people participating. :yayca:

Notes have been sent out. If you were going to get one, you'd have it by now.

Good idea.

Thanks,

73 entries?! that's insane. Voting will be very difficult, I'll definitely need time to decide.

Good job all!

That was near impossible to choose but in the end I had to give props to Doven for the top notch linework and strong take on the charactor. Her expression and the badass rifle put it over the top for me.

A list of faves-

Sinix- All kinds of style.
Poshspice- Wonderfully rendered as usual.
bluefooted- Love it! The dragon looks like a stagepeice suspended on strings in front of a BG. On one hand it's very cool look but on the other it deviates a bit too much from what I imagined for the char.
FridayEve- Great expression. I wish you had finished it more.
Johanni- Very cute.
lukavi- Great entry yet again. Nice butt too.
Oregano- That turned out great! The composition could be tightened up a bit though.
JonnyAwesome- It's a shame you didn't finish this one. Great comp.
magicgoo- Hahaha. Love the hair. The steaming dragon-head is a nice touch too.
Jakkas- Great rendering and color choices but the composition is too flat. Not enough sense of distance.
Al-x- Pretty much what I wrote for Jakkas. Nicely done.
m@.- Tight! My only problem with this is it looks too much like a model wandering down a runway. I suspect you could have pulled off something far cooler if you had picked a more obscure/visually interesting ref.
Main Loop- Looks great. I love the speargun- Great idea for a Verne-eske gadget.

Sorry, there are some other really nice entries but I've run out of steam...

Xgabo - you get my vote this week for your dynamic solution. The gesture is fine and the development of the dragon (in terms of rendering) is raw and expressive. The fire is a bit on the comic side, but I still dig it.
There were so many hot entries, that this took a long time to decide upon.
Posh and Sinix - sweet ass entries.
But my numbe 2 choice would have to be for Bluefooted. Can you please turn those into posters so I can buy one?
Great job to all!
Cheers!

Umm.. holy shit. There's like 30 more entries since last time I checked. This is gonna be tough. Great contest all around, now to comment on my personal favorites:

Andrewley - never disappoints, you captured the theme well.
bluefooted - I love the style you went with, the colors, the textures, everything fits well together.
bumskee - pretty straightforward, love the getup.
hunger_artist - I really like your style, just push it to be more dynamic.
m@ - wow, nice to see you pop in with something awesome. My only crit is with the gun, the forward handle&trigger seem somewhat strange.. might be better without or something.
well, there's 20 more that I'm loving too... can't figure out who to vote for. I think the greenshirt is calling me, I'm gonna go with bluefooted for this one. Great job.

Heck! How on Earth can you pick ONE winner from 73 entries? It's next to impossible! Such an amazing turnout with some outstanding pieces here. I was actually thinking of doing a crit on each one, but sod that; I need to eat occasionally...

It's a tough call, but I'm going for Bluefooted. The subtlety of linework here is gorgeous, but it answers the brief well, she has a nice cynical expression and the mechanical dragon is fab! Also it's a lovely illustration. But if there was a second and third place on offer, for me it'd go to M@ and Johanni. M@'s is beautifully rendered and presented. She has a superb detached expression and the lighting works really well. I notice you gave her Dragons teeth earings too! :) And Johanni's is very different. She's almost an albino, and is wearing some appropriate 'George and the Dragon' armour. I also like the way she hasn't killed the dragon, just captured it.

Again, incredible turnout. Could it be girls are more fun to draw than male characters? Surely not... ;)

Damn, that's a lot of good ones. :)
My vote went to Sinix, I like the dynamic look you gave her, lean and tough.

Hurricane: Cool outfit, tough she could be a tiny bit prettier for my taste. :)
Andrewley: Amazing how much you got in with the short amount of time you put in. If this image would be a little more finished you would have gotten my vote.
Oregano: Nice image, and weaponery. Her right leg feels a bit weird still, although it is much better now you've shown the whole leg. Also is she flying or jumping of something, makes me wonder.
m@: Great outfit, though maybe a little to pretty for the description given. Great pic nonetheless.
Bluefooted: Great style.
Fridayeve: Great style too.

Keep it up everybody!

Holy crap - no wonder dragons don't exist any more - great round guys n gals!!

I usually try to vote on design rather than rendering but M@ rendering is just too stunning to ignore - it helps that his design is also great - he gets my vote

Other favourites include - Sinix, Posh, Bluefooted, Lukavi, Bumskee and Nacho.

Well done everyone!!

Again a CHOW I didn´t finish in time ... but my THunderdome piece was more important for me ;)

Anyway this voting is - as stated above - quite difficult. I´m just mentioning some favs and then try to give someone my vote ...

Andrew Ley very moody piece and I love her face. definitely one of my favs even if I don´t like the staff/weapon very much

Kiriko Nice clean design. I´m always in for some nice cellshading

Poshspice yeah, that´s definitely your work - I liek the "Smaug-Slayer" insription. She´s a bit too pretty for my taste regarding the description though

bluefooted very nice design and execution. I like the idea of the mechanical dragon and I´m always in for some good liework - definitely one of my favs

hurricane She´s really giving an alien feeling and tere´s a good mood going on. I would have liked a litttle bit moe reference to the Vernesque gasgets - most things she wears are quite hightech

FridayEve Very nice piece - I love the gadget and the overall victorian feel. definitely a fav of mine. I´d maybe would have liket a bit more rendering - the pic has quite a sketchy feel for me

Johanni Not much to say - absolutely a fav, great idea and I like the character very much. not sure about the gothic armour though

R_M Another fav - goes into the same direction as Johanni will be hard to chose between these

Azrael I really like the concept idea with the power from the dragon´s head - imo the best idea in this contest. This shows really good inventiveness. A bit cleaner drawing and some more practise in the rendering would be fine but I think you know this.

m@ Yeah you´re right this piece is crap ... nooot. Really great mood and nice expression. Wit R_M and Johanni imo the three best pieces in this competition

Craig Houghton A very nice face that fits the description very well. The design itself doesn´t convince me as much but I like the piece overall very much

There are so many good entries I could blather about but unfortunately I have to work. The choice was for me between Johanni, R_M and M@ and it was a difficult one. I finally voted for Johanni because of the uniqueness.

Whaaa. so much coolness. Hard to decide! My favourites are Andrewley (as usual, I love all in this!), Sinix (great design and style ), and bluefooted.

I voted for bluefooted, the style is so nice and I really like the overall feel.

Props to Poshspice and lukavi, great pieces. And to everybody else for showing up and producing a finished piece!

Choosing is a bit overwhelming. Different aspects are great for everyone pieces. Hadn't seen m@'s before coming into the voting thread and first impressions were :x 8) . So I had to vote for you! I was thinking about oregano, jakkas, sinix brandish and fridayeve too, but m@'s just did it for me. Congratulations to everyone though, what an amazing round!

Voted for m@ this round - just got my eye! Love the execution of the pants, they look leathery, and the colors ovarall are just the right tone to give a sense of realism. Her whole outfit is original (except for the WW2 leather jacket of course), but sticks close to the guidelines. Diggin the focus - out of focus effects that a photograph would take. The antique styled rifle is a good touch. One thing I would have liked to see was more gadgetry on her, something with lights. Still, the concept comes really close to the description. :)

Wow, this was an AMAZING turn out and a very long and hard decision. In the end, I voted for Oregano. I thought his piece just captured everything in the description and the fact that it was stunning to look at. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that she was floating or jumping without something to jump from. But I quickly let that go.

Very closely behind him were 3 others that I was almost sold on: Hurricane, Jakkas, and M@. All great works from everyone else too.

Damn much entries this time *pooh*

and a lot of technically well done images.
I'll hold back my crit :)
chose m@'s Serren. Cool helmet and dragon skin (?) clothing and teeth accessory on belt and trouser leg. The weapon is not really what I imagine under 'Jules Verne-ish', but cool though.
She has the (to me) most appealing "oddness that you can't quite place", while many entries display oddnesses I can place quite instantly :) . Furthermore she looks cold enough indeed to have those kinds of characteristics and attitudes described in the task.

Usually, I can narrow it down to a couple, but this one was hard to do that!
Great job to:
codakromek Very awesome colors! I really liked this one!
xgabo Great action and the look was incredible.
Posh As usual, excellent work.
Bear65 I really liked the overall composition, but I wish she would have been more "finished"
Lukavi I'm in love with that design. Very fairytale-ish.
Oregano Great work and I loved the background with that huge "balloon" airship thing. Cool!
Magicgoo I really loved her hair in that one!

So many many others, I just don't have time to praise or crit. My vote went to Standing. The entire design was awesome. Her face, costume, expression and the giant dragon behind her. Personally, I would have like to see a little more blood :) but that's just me.

Great job to all!!! This was really a lot of fun!

So many great entries, fierce competition... this CHOW business is crazy.
Andrew, Posh, Bluefooted, sinix, nacho, hurri, Oreg, johanni, lukavi, Jakkas, A-lx, shadoman on and on and on. But M@, My God... <3 I couldn't stop staring. The colors are wonderful. Beautiful design and the lighting is top notch, the simplified details are wonderful too. Amazing work. You get my vote. Please enlighten us with your process. I know I'm not the only one who would love to see a tutorial. Great stuff all around everyone.

This was difficult - really :x

It came down to about a million entries, so I'll just list them here:

Kiriko: beautiful design - love the almost art nouveau style, but I wanted to see her from the front :(
Sinix: fabulous, wonderful gesture and rendering, I can really feel this character, wanted to see more details
poshspice: got a real 'tomb raider' feeling from this, nice
FridayEve: so original! love the hat, really nice rendering, too
Johanni: Love this sooo much! her evil little elf face is perfect, beautiful style, too
lukavi: you know you're good :P Wonderful design, love the wings that are too small to carry her big bootey
R_M: love it - wonderful rendering on that jacket and her skin, she is one freaky chick
buzz3d: love the light in this, nice design, too
oregano: Wow! beautiful character and background, original idea as well
JonnyAwesome: wonderful dynamic piece - great composition and rendering
poise very original - I love the little details on her boots and clothes
standing: Yikes! She is certainly not attractive, but what a great character, nice background, too
Al-x: Gorgeous job!!! love that old-school fantasy rendering, good character
Craig Houghton: wonderful sense of character - conveys a lot of emotion, she's very well-realized
shadoman: original and fun, this one just looks super neat!
M@: beautiful, fabulous rendering, her jacket seems a bit out of place, though, considering the rest of her outfit
Main Loop: love the character! Just about perfect, really well-rendered too

So, I finally narrowed it down to 5: Sinix, Johanni, lukavi, Al-x, main loop

And then I voted for main loop, because that entry seemed to fit the description and ideals behind the character best... but it was an incredibly close call.

Oh my god.........................

what a turnout .... so many great pictures... So .. hard .. to .. choose...

My favs from this bunch are:
Jakkas- Creates an awesome sense of environment with the mountains. Introduces some new gadgets, and the colors really top it off for me. Awesome piece.

R_M- Awesome colors and love the helmet. Pose is unusual and pensive too.

FridayEve-Colors and unique design. Makes me wonder how the wep works and what its used for. Different details on the char unifies the piece.

M@- Wonderful rendering. Love how the backround is blured like a photo. Also love the gun and how beefy it looks, bam. Face threw me off however.

Sinix- Loooove the design. The goggles and gear in general remind me of starcraft for some reason. However i love it, even without backround context it takes me to another world.

Bluefooted- Colors and lines amazing. Im missin her wep tho. I feel like she doesnt give the impression that shes a dragon hunter, like if it hadn't been the topic, i wouldnt have know that she is. Beautiful.

Standing- Love the musket and the backround. That giant dragon is amazing. Love it. I think the only thing that turned me off was the face. Good work!

Loved lots of other entries, too many to mention and all for different reasons.

These CHOWs are awesome, provides such inspiration/motivation to get better.

Such a great week in this challenge’s short history, I had to give it a proper tribute. So here we go…Things I love about every entry.

Sunny - Love the toughness and battle-worn look. Nice nip slip too;-)
AndrewLey - Love the efficiency and mood. Nice Jules Verne touches. One of my favs.
4thAngle – Love that you seem to have captured a moment in time here…that weapon is cool looking too.
codakromek – Love the eerie green glow, and the 3D display

Kiriko – Love the design of the suspenders and belt.
Commander Obvious – Love the pensive expression.
xgabo – Love the action! Bad ass hair as well.
Sinix – Love the brush strokes and subtle blue lighting. Like Andrew, great simplicity in the rendering and especially around the legs and feet…I dig it.
Poshspice – Love…everything about it. Cool gauntlets. Smaug is in serious trouble! Btw, how’d you win the week’s challenge WITHOUT the lethally hot babe?
Bluefooted – Love the style. Your work always makes me feel warm and fuzzy insideJ
Goran – Love the angle and rendering, especially around the face.
Hurricane – Love the colors and her gear. Nice idea with her “pet” too.
Antilight77 – Love the hair. Nice decapitation too.
Artdwx – Love the dragon and the reflection in its eye.
Liam.c – Love that she radiates that bad ass aura.
FridayEve – Love that it screams Jules Verne. Great job.
Bear65 – Love the looming shadow.
Bumskee – Love the look of that sleek leather. Cool pistol too.
Nacho – Love the values and especially nice attention paid to the jacket.
Carnifex – Love her facial expression. Nice boots too.
Yaso Kuuhl – Can’t see the image right now, but I’ll edit this if it pops up later.
Prehistoric – Love the dress…reminds me of dragon scales.
Young paddy1 – Love the backpack apparatus. Cool shoes too.
Sve – Love the mischievous take on the character.
Gloklund – Love the little details, and the liquid nitrogen was a great idea.
Thief – Love the feel of this character. Feels like robin hood or something of that ilk…cool.
Barts – Love the attempt…though next time you’re gonna need a bit more.
Doven – Love the sepia tones, fun expression, and nice cleavage. And are those tiny scales I detect on her hip and calves? Interesting…
Purb36 – Love the black widow hourglass.
Johanni – Love the cute bow and medieval armor..great contrast there. Great entry overall.
YAdam – Love the mood…very creepy.
Hanuka – Love the original take. Is she filming her exploits for Animal Planet?
Lukavi – Love the coolness that oozes from all your entries. I wish I could put my finger on it, but I can’t…I just love the style. Fingers crossed that pants like that come back into style one day.
Drawnblud – Love the color scheme on her skin tones.
Hsman77 – Love the serpentine composition
Wobb – Love the friggin’ jaw bone around her neck. Teeth complete with gums…nice!
Sady – Love the whimsy of it. Would’ve loved to see a better scan.
R_M – Love the Captain Nemo helmet…great entry.
Panda – Love the detail on the Jules Verne weapon.
Moraisins – Love the teeth around her belt.
Buzz3d – Love the splash of orange…simple and highly effective. Great image.
Oregano – Love that as boss of this show, you’ve taken every single entry into a kick ass finished painting and set a standard for the rest of us. Love that she is bald but still sexy, and the air ships in the background are damn cool.
JonnyAwesome – Love the lasso contraption.
Hunger_Artist – Love the unique graphic look.
Princeofhappiness – Love the pair of peg legs.
Cseingart – Love the samurai take on the character.
Magicgoo – Love lots here, including the freakish hair and kick ass jacket. Mucho coolio.
Azrael – Love all the little Jules Verne touches and the giant head on her back.
Nordmark – Love that she looks slightly nerdish…but with a big ass machine gun touting rocket jetpack on her back!
Teigrob – Love the humor.
Poise – Love the face plate and flowing cape/skirt thingy. Some fabulous details on the legs and boots as well.
Panagos – Love the weaponry and cool dragon-scale outfit.
Jakkas – Love the red hair and matching red pants (again dig the scales). Nice steam powered wings too.
Brok3n_spirit – Love that you weren’t afraid to do your own thing with the character.
Fractured1 – Love the spooky green eyes. Nice pose too.
Avatar – Love the harpoon gun…Completely, dead-on Jules Verne. Sweet dragon design too.
Solorpower – Love the hair, and the weaponry is fantastic.
Bwkeough – Love the design of that weapon. Looks like the gunpowder ignites the dynamite tied to the spearhead…or something similarly bad ass. Nice chest plate.
Neoknocker – Love the brutality. The hair also…you can never go wrong with blue hair.
Kakee – Love the poor dragon.
Standing – Love this one in all sorts of ways. The outfit, weaponry, and gear are all crazy-cool, and you’ve nailed the Jules Verne angle. I also like that her face isn’t beautiful as in a lot of the other entries. Solid solid work.
Al-x – Love the pants, and the dragon-design of the helmet.
JeffZNY – Nothing to love here. Half-assed crap. Do better next time, you bum.
Brandish – Love the design of that helmet. Overall, an original piece.
Firefly – Love the binoculars…very Verne. Would like to see more contrast on the scan.
VirusArtist – Love that gun, very nicely designed.
m@ - Love the beautiful rendering. Highlights include the sky reflecting off her helmet, the subtle texturing of her pants, and the wonderful patterns on her gloves and rifle. Another one of my favorites, great job!
Craig Houghton – Love the cigarette holder. Nice overall presentation as well.
Shadoman – Love the purple glow, and the danger looming in the shadows.
Main Loop – Love the composition and feel of this piece. The apparatus she’s carrying is perfect and great work on the face.
Morbidhumor – Love the look of satisfaction on her face. Some cool looking ships in the back as well.
Bengonzalez – Love the wings…great idea and well executed.

Well I think that’s it…hope I didn’t miss anyone. Great work all!

Lots of nice entries. Starting to see some nice work, but looks like some are having anatomy issues. Keep at it and you'll get it. I voted for fractured because his/hers was the closest to the vision I had once I read the description. Sinix and m@ were nice, but I thought fractured best showed the concept. Nice work

Well, obviosly the usual suspects threw down some tight work on this one. AdrewLey, Sinix, Lukavi, Oregano all showing their usual good form and kicking my ass. I am pleased to see some awesome posts by some new faces in these exercises.

Hurricane, M@, Jakkas, Al-x, Bloofooted and a few other I'm sure I missed really making this competition top notch. It's a shame that we can only vote once.

Thanks all for kicking my ass.

I'm voting for m@. Even though her hands are a bit HUGE.

It was tough. Sinix almost had my vote, too. Great entries to EVERYBODY who participated. Unbelievable originality in every piece!!

Thanks Bluefooted, im glad (and kinda surprised)you chose mine over the others.. It was really hard not to vote for you, you were my runner-up (went for Posh's).. m@. was #3 in my opinion, but im not mad at him in 1st place..
Yeah, I try to go with the description as much as i can, just as practice for the real world, since its going to be expected of me anyway..

eeeek.. talk about awsome entries. :)

I had to flip a coin between m@ and bluefooted. Both brilliant and stylish, nice execution, attention to details... I ended up going with bluefooted. well done to both of you for pulling out such massive entry.

Some of my other "WOW" factor entries

AndrewLey, dude you just rock.. brilliant colours.

Sinix, your style is really coming along nicely, love the style and your imagination.

Posh, :) eeek awsome.

FridayEve, nice atmosphere, very loose but awsome lighting.

Oregano, love it dude, her expression is sick. :)

Lukavi, you know your stuff. :)

allright.. narrowed it down to 4... sinix, bluefooted, friday eve and johanni.

Sinix because the style creates so much energy... love the design too.. sadly not steampunk enough.

Bluefooted, because I love that mechanical dragon and the overall style.. it looks like some kind of poster from the 19th century.. VERY cool.

Firday Eve, because ofthe colours, the design and that mechanical transdimensional gadget... she looks like clockwerk orange would have played in the victorian age.

Johanni, because the pic is stunningly beautiful and simple.. love the style, the design of her gear and basically evrything about this one...

in the end I went for friday eve... althought the pic is missing a dragon, the character just grips me evrytime I look at it.. I dont know if its the clothes, those gadgets or the stance, but its AWESOME!

as for evrybody else... I know I said it before and I'll repeat it 1 million times, if I want to: YOU FOLKS ROCK!!! best round yet. Too many amazing entries to mention without me passing out from lack of sleep!

cheers,
Etienne

Wow to many great reponses to the topic, here ! I took my time, but it was a great moment of my day, with all that great stuff ! Congrats to you all ! So, here some of my favorites: Nacho, Bumshee, Friday Eve, Hurricane, Goran (great point of view, man !), Bluefooted, Phosphice, Sirix, Andrew Ley, Buzz3d, Lukavi, Johanni, M@ (awesome piece, lights are great ! It's stylish and elegant, wow !), Brandish & Poise...

At last my two favs are Bluefooted and Johanni !
I simply falled in love for that two pics, gorgeous, refreshing and poetic. It's reminds me a lot of things, from some Victorian illustrators (as Sir Tenniel) to some japanese's ukyo-e. If think that you Johanni are a fan of Amano's work (maybe bluefooted too ?). So it was very difficult to made a choice between you two, folks. I voted for Bluefooted cause ... well it's very hard to tell precisely. But I dig the tones and the composition for the perfect assimilation/integration of all this influences. Plus the textures, it looks like the old woodcutting illos. So charming...
That's all.

So torn between so many great entries... Couldn't decide for awhile there between bluefooted, sinix, m@., lukavi, JonnyAwesome, and oregano. I could probably list more favorites if I really took my time, but why bother! There is too much awesome here!
I ended up going with mainloop -I'm in agreement with bluefooted, simply great atmostphere, as well as a character that fit the description to a T.
And thanks so much for the props morbidhumor!

bluefooted gets mine, just love your illustrator's traditional style... makes you stand out from the myriad of photoshopped works. lovely composition and a great costume. tight design and pretty lines. top stuff.

also loved sinix: the shape of her weapon is really great.
andrew ley once again impresses too: you just get better and better!!
m@'s was nice: i almost went for it for the lighting but its just a bit too vague in places. the gun rendering is great and i like the really clean look you've achieved. it certainly stands out from the crowd.

This time I voted for Standing. I think his design fits to the description. And I like the idea with slain dragon in background. But Oregano, Al-x, R_M , nacho, bumskee, hurricane were close. Too many great designs and paintings. Why do we have to choose only ONE!?

Poise.
She's evil. She's Jules Vernish. She's white and blond.
She's the best.

Moved to voteing area... more people will see my comments that way I'm guessing. I'm a newbie to the CHOW, :bashful:

JAkkas: beautiful colors!
Jonny awesome: great composition,
Oregano: nice colors! I was thinking of putting airballoons in my peice also.
Poshspice: oh man you are very good! Her cigar kicks ass!
bumskee:really cool concept, she looks like a nazi.
Sinix: I can imagine her running around dodgeing the dragon with her skinny ass legs, haha, really nice man!
Bluefoot: seriously just beautiful! And I like her pose,
Doven: the colors are really working well I think. I like the simplicity.
Johanni: man she is so cute! I don't really beleive she killed that dragon she is sitting on, but you never know she could be one of those complex sweet quiet people that just snap!, great work!

This round really turned out good! you people kickass, and this was my first CHOW, haha it's like I got slapped in the face, a few times, lol.

I would have voted for M@, but she wasnt only ok to look at it, she is hot. Had the attitude tho. And there wasnt enough of that Jules Vern techno stuff. But she was my favorite as far as pure look.

I gave my vote to Drawanblud due to the attention to detail and style of coloring that I liked. But mostly because it met the desing as a whole.

I thought Andrews was very nice and his style is authentic

Gorans perspectice and monocolor put it in close running as well for me.

to many pieces to post on. Way cool ya'll.

I voted for M@'s because of the presence he brought with the character. I was also really looking for the weapons to make sense for the purpose of killing a dragon, but also making sure that it matched the character's 'aura'. I'd consider a dragon a very high brow creature and I personally think it deserves a high brow slayer, which I thought M@ brought.

AndrewLey's was my next vote. I liked the look, or lack of, in the characters face and it made me feel the character was thinking and not just posing. Bang up job.

so many fantastic entries!! I was pretty stuck between M@'s and JohnnyAwesome's visually. They both have beautiful compositions, but I am trying to base my votes on whether the artist hits all their marks under the character description. I ended up going for JohnnyAwesome's because I didn't see any gadgetry for M@'s - M@, the piece is still a wowzer. However, I think everyone did a phenomenal job.

jeffzny - thanks for crit'ing all of us! very nice of you to take the time to do that :)

Normally i'm just a lurker... but since i voted i guess i should come out of my shell.

My pick was m@. To me, it best captured the design brief for the character. The Image clearly showed the character from head to foot, which i think important for a character concept.

Others i like were Sinix and AndrewLey. Both very nice pieces, but i found them too sketchy/undefined.

Bluefooted's piece is my favorite of the bunch - it would look damn good matted and framed - but i found m@'s met the criteria better.

Top stuff, almost everyone. Every week it's just too hard to decide. And the variety of styles is fantastic.

One thing that I don't like is that many of the works are not suitable for conceptual character design and there are quite many that don't match the guidelines.
ex. I liked m@'s but she wasn't ment to be attractive...
Standing's caught my eye, but she wasn't supposed to be albino and she isn't techno enough.
lukavi was very close to getting my vote, but eventually it goes to Gloklund's work - I think it's closest to what the task required, with even showing the characters personality very nicely.

Jakkas Masz talent chlopie.

I don't know what possessed me, but I decided to crit everybody. :nohope: If I offend anyone, I apologize - these are meant to be constructive. :bashful:

Sunny - very well rendered and suitably scary looking face. I have to wonder how practical that outfit is though. :tihi: If she had to do any jumping around she'd have some serious secondary action goin' on...ow...I also don't see much influence from Jules Verne.

Andrew Ley - I hate to say it, but she's too beautiful! Excellant example of indicating a lot with spare lines, and wonderful lighting. It's a little too sketchy for me though, would've loved to see the whole piece as developed as her face.

4th Angle - Interesting mechanical limbs, and I love her expression. Can't say I like her brassiere though - reminds me of the 'bat nipples' from Batman 4. Cool sickle! :teeth:

codakromek - Nice lighting! I like the floating screen, but I don't know what's going on with the tentacles and wheels surrounding her hand. Is it some sort of computer? The ear piece is a nice touch though. :)

Jakub Sudra - I like the eagle head backpack and her face is very Native American. Her shorts are too flat looking though - remember to draw the ends of sleeves/pants as elipses. :) Cool gun. :teeth:

Kiriko - I like! (Probably because it's similar to my style) I also like that she's facing away, and her boots. :) Her right arm is a little off though - her tricepts aren't showing enough tension to be holding such a heavy jacket at that angle.

Commander Obvious - That was a difficult angle you chose to depict her head at, and you don't *quite* succeed. Her neck is too long. If that is how she is supposed to be as otherworldly, then it doesn't quite come off that way. Her purse is too cool - can I have one? :teeth: Her hair is very cool too - not too many went the curly route.

xgabo - *wow* That is some wicked flames! Very deadly looking chick with even deadlier hair. :tihi: Nice action pose - though she would appear more involved in what she was doing if she was looking at the dragon.

Sinix - cool style, but again too sketchy for me. It would've been cool to see it developed. Right now she looks like she's 'arriving' from somewhere else, but it's only a hint that could be more blatant imo. :)

Poshspice - Lovely hair - I'm a sucker for long and flowy. :) She reminds me of Angelina Jolie. The gloves are a little too weird for me, but the GUN - 'Smaug Slayer 1000' - that's so cool! :teeth:

Bluefooted - She looks too ethereal and 'good girl next door' to be a murderer, and I'm not sure what her left hand is doing - what is she leaning against to get that position? I love the colours and the dragon is suitably *off* and startling.

goran - I like the angle and the drips of flame. The terminator eye is a nice touch too. What does she need the blade/spear for? I bet she could strangle a dragon single-bionic-handedly. :)

hurricane - I'm always a fan of blue-glowing objects. :) Her left arm doesn't look right though - the forearm is too large and long for her upper arm, and her legs look too big for the rest of her. It's a very nice gun though, and her face is just SCARY.

Antilight 77 - That is one grusomely dead dragon. :) Cocky pose, arrogant expression...nice. Her face and hair are flat compared to the rest of her though, and slightly disproportionate. Nice blood splatters. :nohope:

artdwx - That's watercolour, isn't it? Very different feel from the others. I like it. :) The dragon is very well done, and I particularily like her reflexion in it's eye. Nice touch. Her expression is suitably 'tough'...but more like teenager 'tough' than actual 'murderer tough'. Watch the angle of her right foot too - unless she's double-jointed, that would be very uncomfortable to maintain for very long.

liam.c - Very nicely rendered, though it could use some more dark darks and highlights. One leg is longer than the other too. I like her jacket. :teeth:

FridayEve - my first favourite! Definitely nailed the Jules Verne influence and that gadget she's leaning on is too cool. Whatever it is. ;) Again though - would've like to see it more rendered like her cute, freckled face. :tihi:

Bear 65 - the pose is great! I love her expression and the story this piece tells. I wish you'd time to finish it! :)

Bumskee - Whoever said she looks like a nazi was right - she does! ^_^ Her pose is a little too static though. The gloves are cool!

nacho - Reminds me more of the roaring twenties than Jules Verne, but she is nice looking rather than *hot*, so good job!

Carnifex - You're getting better everytime I see your work! :) Nice gun, although I'd work on her arm position more. I like the ornaments on her boots - are they compasses?

Yaso Kuuhl - Nice snarly face. :) Her legs look awkward tho - stiff and not quite placed correctly.

Prehistoric - Nice easy pose - by which I mean she looks comfortable, not stiff. Very nice hand on the spear - even seasoned artists can screw up that position. :)

young paddy1 - interesting gun she's got there - and I like the fact that its weight is aleviated by the crane and harness. Her arms look too short for her bod tho.

sve - I've already crit'd you on this one elsewhere, but I'll say again - really creepy look on her face, good job! And the necklace twirling - love it!

Gloklund - I like the liguid nitrogen - what else to fight fire with? I also like the hash marks on her arm keeping score. The jacket could've been rendered more in keeping with the quality of the rest of the piece.

Thief - her hand is not quite right on the gun, and I'm not sure why the guns aren't rendered like she is, I like the white hair, and the head is well done. :)

Barts - Overall, I would've liked to see this more rendered, and to see more of her. Nice expression, but too 'nice' imo to be Serran.

doren - I like your pencil style, and the clouds are lovely. I just noticed the hint of scales on her - nice. She looks very stiff and tense tho.

purb36 - I would've like to see more finished and her lower legs look too skinny for the rest of her, but I like her snarling visage! :)

Johanni - She has such a sweet elfin look about her - how can she be tough to capture dragons? :teeth: I like the armour..and the bow - just too cute! :tihi:

yAdam - Those are some mondo weapons. :) Very dark and creepy. The arm draped across the...gun-whatever look a little odd though. Like it has two elbows.

Hanuka - I find it odd that you didn't complete one leg while completing the other. It throws her off balance. I'm curious about the wheel - thingies. What is their purpose? Good job on her face - definitely not one of the 'pretty' ones.

lukavi - Gorgeous! I especially like the explanation for the steam machine on her back. I have to say though - all of your characters so far have the same look on their face. Also, her arms are too straight. Beautifully rendered as always!

Teigrob
November 16th, 2005, 02:19 AM
Drawnblud - My...that is one thoroughly killed draon. Very nice. I also like her button nose - it's so cute, and so out of place on that hardened face. She is suffering from GDB's though - (that's Gravity Defying Breasts) - might want to tone that down a bit. :)

hsman77 - Nice line of action! Although it wasn't very clear - the first two or three times I looked I couldn't quite tell what was going on. Rendering further should help that. :)

Wobb - The first impression of those rockets was..??..and she's holding them quite awkwardly too. But I like her face and head tilt. Interesting 'hair' she's got too. :teeth:

Sady - I like her expression! Sardonic, too cool for this joint. Her arm is pretty funky though - I can't tell if that was intentional or not - but it's stretched weirdly.

R_M - Nice pose, and while I don't personally care for bare breasts, they are well done with believable weight. The deep sea divers helmet is an interesting touch - is that part of her battle armour? If so, she must be a LOT stronger than she looks, 'cause that stuff is heavy!

Panda - You've got some good glimmering of lighting going on. I would've liked to see her more polished. The gizmo is great, but her hand looks awkward holding it.

moraisins - She reminds me of Domino - think it's just the black patch. :) I like the bullwhip - good for snapping some dragon's nose! Watch your legs though - they don't quite read.

buzz3d - Beautiful painterly technique with her hair and scarf. I would've loved to have seen that continued through the rest of the piece. The legs look rushed.

Oregano - Aside from the fact that I can see no eartly reason why she'd be in that pose in midair, it's very well done! :D Nice expression too! If she's falling, or flipping, or otherwise scooting along by means unknown to us...her hair should reflect some of that movement. Right now it's just...there.

JohnnyAwesome - Nice dragon, and I like the sense that she's on a ship on high seas...I think it would be stronger if I could tell where she was looking though - and for it to be a little more finished - but it works well enough as is. Like to see some eyeballs..:teeth:

Hunger_Artist - Gool graphic style, stiff pose. Her feet don't look like they're on anything and that weapon looks way too heavy to be held with just one hand. Develp this style some more - I like it. :)

princeofhappiness - Oh my...she's lost three limbs and she's still gungho? Who's her Moby Dick?!? I like her jacket..though not exactly a bomber jacket. :)

cseingart - Nice, ninja-ish look - curious how she's just floating there...Her sword is too straight - swords are too heavy for people to hold them straight-armed. Try it - even with a broom - and you'll see what I mean. :)

magicgoo - That's just scary. :x Nice blade...but I don't see how her knee bends inside that metal cover: hinges would've worked better instead of rivets.

Azrael - I love her pose - ready to pounce at a moments notice, on the search...That is one huge gadget on her back though - hope she doesn't get strained muscles..

nordmark - Pay attention to your prespective with those guns: they are off by a bit, pointing in different directions with nothing to indicate they're supposed to swivel. :) Nice hands, and I like her goggles.

Teigrob - You suck. I can't tell you anything, you never listen. :nohope:

Poise - Beautifully rendered, and I like the spikes for heels. Her arms though...the only reason I can think of for someone to hold them awkwardly like that is because of an irritating rash or sunburn...

Panagos - Very nice! I like that she's slim instead of the usual buxom. The sword is held very naturally, but the gun is held too lightly for it's size and obvious weight. Too, the coat is too long for 'authentic WWII bomber jacket' - of course, she only occasionally wears that, so I'll give this one to you. :)

Jakkas - Since lukavi prodced it first, it's unfortunate that others after look like they're copying with the mechanical wings - although I'm sure you're not. It's just the impression. The hands are very well done and I like the harness for the wings. :) I have to wonder though - what self-respecting dragon hunter would show so much bare flesh unprotected from dragon breath? :tihi:

bR0k3n_sPiRiT - As I told others...I'm a sucker for blue glowing things. :teeth: Another sufferer of GDB's though...:tihi:

fractured1 - I like her loose, easy stance, with her hands draped over the spear. Nice freaky eyes too. :x The left hand looks too big though.

Avatar - Very, very cool harpoon gun. Extra points for it being hand cranked! You've got proportions and positioning down pretty good, but clothing needs some more work to get proper folds.

solorpower - I love that dragon! Also very nice detail work on the crossbow & jewelry. My only thing - way too much exposed flesh for fighting dragons - even at a distance. Does she never run through rough vegetation? :teeth:

bwkeough - Nice, sulky expression and I like the harpoon gun. With the other gun - again, her arm is too straight. How could she bring it up fast enough? I like the spurs - neat touch. :)

neoknocker - Cool action pose, would've liked to see more contrast. For such a bright light source, there should be some darks to balance it.

kakee - Cute! She doesn't exactly look like a fearsome murderer though ...and the dragon is more to be pitied. :(

Standing - Nice sneer. :) I like the skirt too - it's just so...incongruous. :teeth:

Al-x - I love the dragonskin pants. That's a lot of bareflesh though...:tihi: Personal pet peeve.

JeffZNY - Pink! You gotta love pink. :teeth: Her hands are a little too big though, and her arm is too long - it'd be touching her knee if it hung down.

Brandish - She looks...disturbing I think would be the best word. But also lost, like she doesn't like where she's ended up in life. The bomber jacket looks more like a parka than a bomber jacket, which works with the overall ensemble. Funky spear. :)

firefly - This look so intriguing, I wish I could've seen it finished. Next time, eh? :)

VirusArtist - I like her expression, the gatling gun, the mechanical hand...I could nitpick her right hand...but I have enough problems with my own hands. ;)

m@ - Wow. This one got my vote - she has so much presence - she doesn't demand it - she COMMANDS it. Just one, little thing...too much flesh...:teeth:

Craig Houghton - Definitely a plain Jane. :) And I like her curly hair. Neck is a little too long, but otherwise a very solid piece.

Shadoman - Reminds me of Halo - the gun blade and platform do anyway. Little things - bomber jacket too long...scars across her leg don't follow the contour of her leg...funky hair though - I like. :)

Main Loop - Nice pose, good expression and curly hair. :teeth: Her left foot is odd though - looks like it's reversed, like I'm seeing the outside of her foot, not the inside.

morbid humor - It's a nice painterly style, and I like the jaggedness of her ouline. My only thing is her left foot doesn't look believable in that pose - should tilt the heel down more.

bengozalez - hey, a hang glider that's powered! Very cool. Nice perspective too. The jacket doesn't look quite right across her arm, but that's the only obvious thing...

ow. My wrist hurts...

Cheers everyone! Excellant round! :teeth:

Teigrob - Thanks for the crits! You put some time in on that! :) Looking back, I'm not sure about the hands either... I think they needed a bit more time spent on them.

I voted for Doven because he seemed to follow all of the qualities of the description and its a really well done piece. :)

A lot of people seemed to make her look really beautiful, when in fact it sounded more like she was more average looking.

JeffZNY and Teigrob: Thanks for taking the time to go through all the entries, much appreciated.
And Teigrob, you're right about the legs, didn't spend as much time on them as on the upper body :(
I should spend more time on the preliminary drawing like I think Lukavi does..

Teigrob Nice colorpalette in your image, clean lines too. Love the dragon.
Wish I could see more of the face of the girl. Pose is a bit strange, looks like she's going to slide of that step she's standing on.

JeffZNY:
Nice Lighting, love the pink. Her face is a bit too oval for my taste and some of the outlines could be cleaned up. The green eye is a nice touch.

OK, thanks again!

WOW this was really really difficult. In the end I choice Standing because of the great rendering and I thought it fit the description rather well.

I was torn between sinix and oregano's entry, but ended up going for oregano.. thought the character really hit the assignment.

I couldn't crit ya'll.. just wanted to say I think (NOT a dis, people.. just my two cents) poshspice and m@ did wonderful wonderful jobs at the character and rendering and light and everything sweet, but I think they missed out on creating the character in the brief.. she was supposed to be "not ugly, and not pretty", but you guys made her HAWT! :D If the brief read sexy badass dragonslayer, one of you guys woulda had my vote :).

Insane round, people! I wish I could've voted for more of ya'll! hehe

peace
