ROUND #4
-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------
Mortimer, The Devil's Advocate
NON-HUMAN
If the Devil had a Lawyer, Mortimer would be it.
Closely related to Succubae, Mortimer is an asexual minor deamon who’s will is that of it’s Overlord. Sent to parlay delicate matters of Spiritual Ownership, Soul Use, Spiritual Development and Management, Theological Planning and Soul Collection, Mortimer is a cunning negotiator and loves what he does because he is very, very good at it. And thinks it's fun watching people squirm.
But what Mortimer would love the most is a glass of ice water :^^;: .

Mmm yes... Also, aren't succubus traditionally female?
I assume this is just meant to be an ambiguous character (regarding gender)?
Either way, this topic is great!!

Reading the wiki, it suggests that a succubus is female demon, the male version being named Incubus. But under definition of the Incubus, it explains that in some legends the demon could change its sex at will. It also says that an Incubus would suduce both male and female humans alike. Imo I would define it has having no sex (hense being described as [I]asexual[/I.) but as a character it prefers to be male.

If I was asexual :P I'd probably identify myself as male or female just because it would make things easier. That's how I'd interpret it. The other possibility - that our infallible mod has made a tiny error - is just inconceivable!

Another goodie! I like the sound of this one. More sexual ambiguity... Mortimer sounds like something out of Terry Pratchett.

Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=asexual)
asexual (adj.)
1. Having no evident sex or sex organs; sexless.
2. Relating to, produced by, or involving reproduction that occurs without the union of male and female gametes, as in binary fission or budding.
3. Lacking interest in or desire for sex.
OK, #1 & #3 says that this character, an asexual type, does not care for sex at all, or is not capable of having sex. In nature, animals that are asexual are neither male nor female, but are capable of self-reproduction, so this character is able to have little "Mortimers" running around, eh? - (that is, if "it" was from nature). But theologically, "it" is not necessarily from nature, but from the dark depths of the "unnatural".
Sooooooo. Since there is no clear definition of what kind of "asexual" attributes this character has, even from this vague formal definition, I am assuming that it is up to the artist to decide which way this character will swing. It can't swing both ways since it has no desire to, *BUT* it can swing both ways with itself --- *IF* you follow #2's explaination.
Wierd, huh?
Thanks Oregano!!! :x

OK....this is getting kinda weird.
Either make the character Mortimer in female form, or in male form. If male, I would make him very handsome (if in human form), with slight hints and undertones of an evil nature.
That's just my thoughts. This is a really good topic. It's challenging, to say the least, so all sorts of creativity is open for this one.... >:D

I don't mean to offend any fans out there....but, to me the term asexual conjures images of Marilyn Manson (in some of his costumes). He looks like neither a he or a she. Some men and women in the gothic culture also take on the appearance of neither sex. Try doing some image searches on that. Also, another image of asexual (IMO) is the angel Gabriel from Constantine. True, it is a woman actress, but she wore no makeup, her hair was short and her figure was made to look not like a woman or a man.
Anyway, I'm just trying to help, so I hope I have.....

I think Scumgrinders entry is fine - it meets the posted requirements, and the description very well. My only caveat is that it could be finished out some more, but like he said, he's got to go tackle the COW. The week is still young, so he may touch it up some - but even so, it's fine as is.
the 3/4's issue: well, as was pointed out, none of the character is cut off the canvas - other places yes. But not the canvas.
Otherwise, I think it's fine - Mortimer there looks like the tool of a rather insensitive Master who is used to getting his way to me.
~Oreg.

it bothers me that the 3/4th thing was even pointed out at all, i mean it's not as if he's leaving parts of the char out of the drawing, they just aren't there. anyway his entry looks pretty great as is and even if he did go to touch it up there wouldn't be much to do.
so :p all over hanuka.

November 14th, 2005, 12:57 PM
I knew this would happen. My justification is this: The character is supposed to be asexual and closely related to succubae, demons of female form. I looked at the description for a while and thought that maybe most entries were going to be androgenous. Asexual to me is sexless, so it could be either this ethereal being , probably beautiful, which i would relate more to angels, or really ugly and traumatized,
- my entry.
My character has no breasts and no limbs and no sexual organs. It was partially inspired by the song "quote -unquote" by Mr Bungle.
All behold the spectacle
A fleshy limbless rectangle
Sitting on a pedestal...
the Nullo part:
"Nullo" is a shortened form of the word nullification, a catch-all for all body modifications involving significant removal of tissues. For example, castration, penectomy, amputations, tooth removal, and fingernail removal are all examples of "nullo".
Nullo usually goes hand in hand with extreme domination.
so that's my entry.
I did want to add arms at some point just because i knew this would be an issue with some of you but then i decided against it. So there you go.

C.S. Lewis, actually. :) Major, major Christian author from the 40's and 50's. Great book - and QUITE hysterical if you can find the audio book as read by John Cleese! :D Talk about laugh out loud! 'Screwtape' is a higher-up demon writing to his nephew Wormwood, who is trying to prevent his human from becoming a Christian. It's very interesting, highly reccommend it...and that was probably more info than you were looking for. :bashful:

Hanuka, hurricane, somewhat belated thanx for the words of welcome & kind comments.
such great work everywhere on this site, i spend way to much time just browsing.
Zaknafain -- cool malevalence(sp?) of your Mortimer is chilling, would like to see more demonic aspects, though.
hurricane -- love the wings, and now i know where that tie i lost got off to. query: one bite from this thing = a pound of flesh??
Mr. Blonde -- fine technique, good atmosphere, very forbidding. the chiaroscuro at right shoulder is tight but maybe that side of the head needs a bit more of same? i don't quite grasp the form as it is. also, nib or dagger? it's a bit too ambiguous to my eyes.
Mr.Blonde
November 15th, 2005, 10:06 AM
Zaknafain: Practice practice read practice. read. paint. paint paint paint paint. That's how you get better. oh... and paint.
ParkerD: it's too soon to tell, plus, I think Hurricane is gonna give me a run for my money. :) thanks though
zeitwolf. Hrm.. perhaps i have the wrong impression of a succubus. I thought that since this succubus doesn't necessarily serve the function that most succubae serve, it would be alright to clothe it and therefore lose some of it's more obvious characteristics.
masque, bwkenough: It's meant to be a cross between a nib and a dagger. The pen is mightier than the sword, well... how about both? (meant for use as a dagger, but aestetics of a nib)
*edit* i'd also like to mention that my piece is inspired by Jason Manley. And his Night Elf tut (http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials/7714) that I read a while back */edit*

as a creature, that piece is very nice, but i'm having a hard time identifying it as "character" which basically is, what this description demands. it's hard to draw the line between character and creature sometimes, and i wouldnt just define it by anatomy-issues... but at least there should be some kind of expression to "Mortimer", a face maybe, clothing, something that allows communication and reflects intelligence. something defining "Mortimer" as individual person, no matter of what species he/she/it is.

it's not like i'm being the local nitpicker here or anything. i really like that entry as such, but i'm giving him an honest critique and advice, too. that is: to me it's actually a creature more than a character ... no offence there.
solorpower: sweet improvement with this update. background is a bit chaotic to me, but the character itself is well executed. plus i like how you added the ice water-thingy ;)

Gloklund- I love it! That one got my pulse racing. Very cool!
Well, here's my first CHOW. This was really fun. Hope I can do it again.

well, i could've worked on him until the deadline, but here he is.
say "hi" to Mortimer. he's a nice enough old fella for being a deamon and all.

Hey, lukavi, very interesting and surprising for me version of your soul catcher. Very different from what you did before, I think. I love it :). It disgusts me and attracts, and makes me smile at the same time. I'm wondering who will be seduced with this kind of appearance, but maybe it's a moment after, when bumskee ideal beauty shows her real essence.
Great imagination and execution.
