I fear there isn't enough variation inbetween the topics lately. I understand that the ideas are rather limitless but
Massive black & Messenger of death have a similar "themed" topic in certain ways
Just the same as
Swamp Beast & Tentacles could be similarly "themed" as well. I feel like my submission for the swamp beast could easily fit this topic :/ but anyway, I have too much work to do now which is a good thing so I shouldn't be bitching but I just felt like there should be more "original" topics.

I don't think tentacles and swamp beast are alike very much. Tentacles are really pretty open ended, and i can't think of any swamp creature that has tentacles. Also the messenger of death needn't be black, nor massive. A messenger of death creature wouldve been extremly white for me. I need to start doing these things.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/vrd/tentacle.jpg
Concept: This cold blooded, subaquan beast, likes it near the warm vulcanos. It feeds mainly on birds and fish, but could devour anything it walks/swims by. If the prey isn't dead it will use its poisonous tentacles and jaw to kill the prey. It would also use it's tentacles to capture birds flying away.
If the prey is too big for it to swallow, the Female would chew it in smaller pices and store them away in its cave for the smaller ones.

Hey Fozzy, yes, we have never ending imaginations so the possibilties for this topic could range in the 1,000's and up, I just felt like bitching :D partly because I guess I wish the topics were more wild instead of the word "tentacles". I shouldn't be complaining though since I haven't really had the time to submitt anything worth while lately.

Nice! I like how the attention is pulled towards the eye. Maybe the tentacles could be arranged in a way that supports the composition even more, maybe a spiral, or having some a bit "smoothier" and not so jiggsawed. But take that with a grain of salt of course :)

The Mudwah
It lives in the swamp waters of X4f and eats fish for the most part. Sometimes when the hunger is too big it will catch prey from dry land aswell though. It digests its food by liquifying it from the inside via a poison that comes from the thorn in its trunk. humans aren't advised to go near waters where it resides as it seems to have developed a taste for manflesh recently.

Tentacles of the Deep - There is a tale that is whispered in hushed voices by viking seafarers that brings an icy chill to even the most seasoned veteran of the ocean. It is the tale of the Tentacles of the Deep. Few sailors survive their encounter with these bizzare creatures. Those that do survive, mention that the tentacles appear only in the heaviest storms, when the waves are at their strongest. The creatures burst from the waves, wrapping themselves around the helpless ship, shattering it and pulling it under to the deepest depths of the ocean. No one knows why the tentacles strike when they do, or why they choose the ships. Some say they are summoned by a vengeful god of the ocean. Others believe that they are not seperate creatures at all, but the tentacled arms of a massive undersea creature that has not yet been seen in full. In either case, the tale of the Tentacles of the Deep cause even the bravest sailors to keep a white knuckled grip on the rails of their ship.

In the deep swamps of Hungalo, there lives a snake-like species that is often mistaken for legendary monsters in stories passed down through tribal generations. These monsters, often described as having a numerous amount of tentacles and killing any moving thing in it's vicinity, have terrorized tribesman for centuries. It wasn't until recent, that the mystery was finally solved.
The species resemble a cross between a leech and a large snake. The females will migrate to an area of swamp that is known for a porous material and will attach itself to lay eggs. Many females have been known to attach themselves to the same spot, often confusing anyone nearby into thinking they have spotted one of these legendary monsters.
The most interesting part of this creature isn't the creature itself but a rare, yet desirable, mushroom that grows off the top of this porous material while the females are attached. Many tribes value it because of its effects it has on the human body. Most die trying to get it.

[LEFT]Myoceum Occulimortia, more commonly known as an "Eye Vore", is found in or near the temperate oceans of Kloxxi 4. These amphibious parasites dine exclusively on the eye and optic nerve of their host. Eye Vores typically reach a maximum length of 1.25 meters and may live as long as a millenia. Typically ingested as eggs by large aquatic filter feeders (usually A full grown Jonke Slinthera(their favorite host) which can grow to as long as 8.5 kilometers and has twenty two pairs of large eyes(+/- 42 centimeters each). They hatch in the digestive tract and begin the journey to the optic region of their host. Once there, they bore through the sclera (optic wall). By utilizing the consumed scleral proteins they synthesize a gelatinous dermal coating that negates any immunosystemic reaction. Immediately following the excretion of their coating, they enter the vitreous portion of the eye, where they will remain for up to two years eating everything within the choroid membrane sans the ora serrata and the cornea. They will travel eye to eye repeating this process each time until the last eye at which time, they exit the host via the cornea. Upon exiting they begin their reproductive cycle. They are hermaphroditic and may or may not mate with another individual. A single vore typically produces six to eight thousand eggs per clutch. The eggs are equal in density to their aquatic habitat and therefore travel freely within its range. Notably, much of their diet consists of nerve protein which they primarily use to generate new cerebral tissue and subsequently neural pathways. Thus, adult vores are typically far more intelligent than adolescents, however the true extent of their intellectual capacity is as of yet unknown.

Same for Underwater Deep Sea Creature, too, actually. Lots of people (including me) did tentacle based creatures seeing as the topic was based off of the Giant Squid video. Its okay....I didn't have time to do last weeks (darnit!) and its looking like I wouldn't have been to do this one too. Seeing as I am pretty much SICK of tentacles after my last two paintings, it makes it easier to deal with. ;)

A Canver duck falling foul of the giant Skeel Worm, the worm is ingested by many animals (usually fish) in egg form however it will only develop in the gut of migratory aquatic birds, the worm will remain relatively small untill it senses a long period of flight followed by the impact of a water landing. After the bird has made its move to a warmer climate the worm will use the abundance of food to grow extremely rapidly, the results as you can see are unpleasant, the worm will digest its host using the enzymic muccus on its body then swim off to find a mate.
The Skeel Worm is named after it's discoverer, who was unfortunate enough to have one of these creatures in his gut, luckily a hot salty colonic caused the animal to vacate his body.

Tsoglydon (sog-lee-dawn)
The tsoglydon is an unusual type of creature. Living in the darkest of subterranean tunnels and dungeons, it feeds off anything it can scrounge. A sore sight of bumpy tumors and a mass of tentacles arranged in no apparent order of form, accept that the mouth always resides on, or near the top. Slow moving, it can catch prey by surprise with it's amazing elasticity, and pin-point accuracy. Multiple eyes randomly placed across the top of this mass allow 360 degree vision. Highly resistant to cutting and bludgeoning weapons, the most effective attack is with fire. Hyper-sensitive to light, the tsoglydon tends to contract its form into a close-knit mass for defensive purposes (as depicted).

Tentacle Snake: Solitary creatures, the tentacle snake is found in light forests with plenty of shrubby undergrowth, which it uses for cover. Each snake claims a territory of an area spanning 5 - 7 miles square, and, as the animal ages and grows, it will eventually fill the entire area with "extensions" of itself in the form of heat-sensitive tentacles. To the casual observer (and any hapless animal that may be wandering through the area), these tentacles generally look like harmless sticks and logs laying on the ground. But the unfortunate prey that happens to brush up against one will find itself caught and dragged into the center of the snake's territory, where the head and body are located. The snake itself is toothless and simply swallows its prey whole, with the help of small, tentacle-like appendages located around its mouth.
The snakes themselves vary in size, but larger specimens are surely large enough to swallow humans and deer-sized animals.

Locks of the Forgotten God
Long ago there was a seperation in the land of the gods and the deity Baga turned against the others. With their combined efforts, the gods of justice and law managed to seal Baga in the deepest circle of Hell, burried beneath the earth. Despite all his rage, Baga could never manage to break free of his prison because the gods burried him too deep. The only thing which managed to reach the caverns of Hell was his hair, flailing wildly at anybody foolish enough to pass by, eager to sustain his bloodlust while still trapped in his eternal prison beneath the earth.

4 hours, eh?...what for? The whole idea and concept phase included i guess, but i don't think it took you hours to draw and color your entry...
And what br0ken_spirit said: Main focus is the creature not the letters :)
Nevertheless i suggest that you sit down and work more nad more and more on your artwork...that's what you and your art need...look at other images on this board, observe how they render...regarding light/shadow, colors, tones, textures...watch the details, where can i put details? What's important on my creature, how can i make it believable, realistic or whatever you want to achieve...
So...work further on your artwork...push yourself, don't believe your mind, when you think it's finished...it's far from that...go!

erm... the main problem is is that I don't do any more than this because I do not know how, and cannot see what else to do. Being 17 and not having any useful imput from Art and Graphics teachers does not help. It definately took 2 1/2 hours, I was probably exagerating :P it takes me ages to do anything, it took about 2 hours to colour it not knowing how to use photoshop well and all, If I did it in pencil I would have only taken an hour at most. I see other peoples work here and although they are all brilliant I just cannot see how they are done.
One is small because it is smaller than the other :P
Can I ask why my entry for the last COW was accepted when I personnaly think it is a lot worse.
Well I've got to go to Chemistry now, other wise I would probably rant some more :P

All i said wasn't referring to COW...it's more about your skills in art general...you have to improve your skills not your COW entering level or whatever...and you have to look at good drawings and learn from them...don't fool yourself with saying "i can't see how they do it"...look and try do draw the same silhouettes...look and try to apply the same colors...just copy for the first times and you will learn something...of course it will look horrible compared to the original, but you have to start and get out of your lazy mode...
Don't look at how many hours you sat on your work...no one cares for it and you shouldn't at least...

Cique, go to this site: www.saveloomis.org
Download those books, for a strange and fortunate twist of fate, they are completly free to download, so don't pass up the oportunity. They are also out of print if I'm not mistaken.
Read "Figure Drawing for All its Worth" and start doing every excersize.
You last C.O.W. entry clearly portrayed a creature, this entry the creatures are relegated to the text, which is occupying an enourmous space on the image.
Get the Andrew Loomis books. You won't regret it :)
EDIT: you could also or instead get the ones by Hogarth or other authors I guess, the point is get studying material. Also draw from life a lot. You can start a sketchbook in the sketchbooks section to get feedback and keep track of your studies.

cool returning to your old avatar, it burnt into the mind of many members, because it's unique...
I checked your site (the first time!) and wow! Very cool animations you have there, though i didn't understand them mostly :) Congrats on your work...keep it up! Actually i thought your avatar was always painted, but then i saw at your site that it's actually a clay figure :)
Great!
btw the last movie "ball" didnt load for me...
Hey Foz!
Please note - that avatar (as listed in my signature line) just looks like me. I'm giving props to rednosestudio which is not me, but someone I really admire. My web site has zero animation, just medical illustration and design (and sorely needs to be updated). Sorry to burst the bubble, but again, I'm just giving credit to Red Nose Studio for the avatar.
You'll have to write to them about that 'ball' movie. :)
Hope you still love me.

Tentacle Creature Design
This alien creature burrows under the surface waiting for prey. When the prey is close enough the tentacles surround the victim and direct it to the mouth for consumption. It is also an excellent predator on land where its tentacles act as legs for surprisingly swift mobility.

Jellian or "Whip of the Stream"
Inhabitors of tropical esturaries, the Jellian capture all forms of marine life where the intertidal currents hit land. A paralyzing sting from the myriad of tentacles at its base allows this small creature, measuring .5 meter (roughly 1.6 feet), to survive and thrive in their habitat.
The male Jellians make themselves look foreboding to any attacker by inflating their air sacs to suggest larger eyes belonging to a large creature as well as for mating.

Slow but very reliable, the odafrangian sea-snail provides not only transportation but also marketable products for the itinerant traders of Malistocca: intense red and indigo dyes, eye-jewels, and, of course, the renowned blue leather made from the creatures' shell-skin, coveted for its toughness, durability and suppleness.

The Tentacled Warrington (named after the town where it was first discovered) is a vanishing species. Only Liverpool, Newcastle and Ednburgh have them in any numbers. These unpleasant creatures make the early morning rounds of back alleys, bus stops and pub doorways looking for their sustenance of human organic waste. Using their sensitive tentacles, they probe and consume puddles of urine and vomit, hoping for a morsel highly infused with alcohol, their favourite treat.

Sorry this is so gross - got the idea when I googled 'Tentacle' and there was a photo called 'tentacle man', with a fellow in a trench coat and some sort of hose trailing from it. Bizarre.

This is my first time posting for C.O.W.,,,
Thought participating in this on a weekly basis should improve my skills after a while...
ok, I really wanted to do more with this (like better texture on the tentacles...plus I tried 4 or 5 times to render a desert canyon scene, but just ended up with a mess, and I imagine the shadow/perspective in general is problematic)...I need to just submit the thing because I've neglected a few other duties.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/brainstorm/creature01.jpg
This tentacle creature lives in a desert environment, stands about 5 feet tall, and has retractable eyes and mouth. For defense, it brings its crablike legs close to it's body to serve as a shield, and its soft body parts can change color to match the environment. I was also thinking maybe the black wart things around its back secrete a poisonous gas that stuns creatures who get within close range.

Illness Eater
We may have just discovered the cure for every known illness. During our expedition to the uncharted regions of the newly colonized jungle world of Soen III, we have retrieved several specimens of a rather curious species. They dwell in murky pools ridden with diseases, as our terrain analysis demonstrated. Surely, through years of evolution, these creatures have adapted to living in the most hazardous conditions, and this developed a very adaptable and resiliant inmunological system. We have studied their cellular behavior when exposed to new illnesses, and they can manage to counter everything. This, applied to human matters, could lead to the development of the ultimate cure.
It should also be noted than the more they develop antibodies for countering illnesses, the more they grow in body size. They also become more agressive and keen. Since they are able to coexist with diseases without apparent harm to themselves, the military sector has shown interest in the possibility of military use of these specimens, using them either to research new bacteriological offensives, or using the specimens themelves as biological weapons.

Bugaloo -
The colorful creature known as the Bugaloo can be identified by its size and resemblance to a turtle, but more noticeably it's numerous amounts of long tentacles that extend from the top of its round back. Bugaloo’s usually hunt at night when the pickledees fly above flashing their blue eyes as a part of mating ritual. The Bugaloo has cleverly adapted markings on its back that it uses to lure the pickledees closer by flashing their distinct mating spectacle of lights and then snatches em up with its tentacles.
The Bugaloo also feeds on various vegetation but its main diet consist of the juicy filled pickledees. You can always tell when a Bugaloo has just got done feasting on the pickledees because they cause its tongue to turn blue from their ink-like filling.

"Nasty Pink"
...This species is an example of interesting animal evolution. When the natural environment changed immediately and the water reservoirs started to shrink those creatures had to adapt to living on trees. Hunted on small birds, monkeys and even insects. This octopus-like creature can wait whole day in hideout for a victim. In this situation their skin is green. But when they see any bird or monkey their skin become pink and they start to produce a sweet intensive smell. They look like an interesting fruit or flower (their body is partially covered with scales that simulate flower petals)...

The Mão do Deus - This large cephalopod lurks beneath the surface of Portugese waters. Its name translates to 'Hand of God' in Portugese (or Sharktopus in Drunk Sailor); a fitting name due to its shape and that victims will often see a bright white light moments before being attacked.
The Mão do Deus' skin near its mouth contains photophores which enables it to create a stunning bright white light. It is still unknown to researchers as to the reason the beast emits the light; some speculate that it uses the light to stun prey, while others just claim it's a freak of nature.
The creature usually reaches the length of 20 metres (from tentacle to tail) and can weigh in at 2000 kgs. They mainly feed off large fish, whales, and sailors. The Mão do Deus' uses its three suctioned tentacles (arms) to grapple or pull under its larger prey or open 'family value' cans of Beefaroni from Costco. This is definitely a terrifying beast from the deep.

"TENTAI"
Imagine yourself being a gitty 16 year old schoolgirl. Now try and imagine you being a lust object for thousands of manga fanboy desktop perverts spread over the world who are obsessed with underaged girls in schoolgirl outfits(technical term;lollicon). One could try and cover up their skin by using a big sweater!? YES, but 16 year old schoolgirls who watch steamy hiphop video's don't like that!! So now there is "Tentai" savior of the virginity of the underaged schoolgirl!!
If you cant get away from your stalker ex boy-friend, loose handed gym teacher or your obsessed kid from science class, just wear your own personal "Tentai". It is firmly mounted around ones waist, and can easily be muffled away under your skirt! When he is needed he will pop up from underneith the skirt and attack the intruder of your personal space. Although the head of "tentai" is not big, it still is one scary mofo! Scary to scum but sweet for your pet or little brother/sister and cute enough to pet every once and a while!
The following pic shows Tentai in action when being nice to a little kittycat.
This drawing is dedicated to Djego(for sharing his great reference library) and Brian (for introducing me to the wonderful world of tentacles),

Romance I really appreciate the feedback I think your right...Thanks for taking the time. To the group in general GREAT ENTRIES! As this is my first entry, and subsequently my scope is somewhat limited, I would still like to offer an outside opinion. It seems to me that there is a lack of feedback(and I'm guilty as well) for those entries that fall in the center of the talent curve so to speak. I'm tryin to say that although I really wanted feedback early when it would have helped I was pretty much checking back on this thread 8-10 a day waitin' for anything that may offer insight and improvement. This is a weekly post and therefor the pieces entered are done so under that pretense so.....I think this is a great opportunity for artists to develop their earlier skill set ( like layout/composition, color scheme, lighting, etc.) I think that if everyone who entered gave a pro and con for each entry including their own, the development curve for all of us would drastically improve and maybe guys like Cique could tag along with more walk and less talk ya know. I again am new here and may be overstepping my bounds, but I feel we'd all greatly benefit from 20 min of our pier's time each week. Thanks to all who have read this far.....
I'll try to lead by example...
-Lady Medusa
Great creature, very unique (I don't think I've seen anything quite like it) and yet it's anatomically sound and is believable.
The color sceme seems a bit odd the blue on orange is too much, it would be difficult for an aquatic animal who is orange to be stealthy in warm(typically clear) water. The only other critique is related in that an environment of some kind would be cool.
-llothcat
Great piece, your style is one of my favorites. Your boundless imagination is evident...the compostion deserves particular accolade...Very well done sir.
The only critique I'd make is that you're nearly blurbless(though funny)....come on gimme a story, Like this tentacled beast feeds on newbie ca artists who talk too much etc......etc...etc...
etc...
etc...! Hee Hee
-Nightfend
Spectacular...great rendering(I like the classic style it reminds me of the old seamonster etchings) Great movement, the piece is very dynamic.
The only thing I'd add is a little fog and some heavy storm clouds to make the waves and the atmosphere match.
Leckronium-
Wow..very clean and very professional Nice job. I wanna know what affects were desireable though hee hee.
The thing I'd like to see is more texturing it kinda looks like an airbrush piece 90% done, texture would make it perfect I think.
-Cique You've gotten your share of criticism and taken it very well, I respect that. Your situation is partially responsible for my long message of artistic responsability here...Thanks. Keep at it man you'll get it...I've been drawing for nearly all of my many years and I learned from reading responses to your post, in my eyes art is about the devolpment of the process and is therefor not perfectable only improvable, enjoy improving don't chase perfection...because it is by necessity; unatainable.
-Youngpaddy
When I first saw your sketch (other than thinking the head looked a bit like my piece) I didn't give it much thought. But you really brought it to life and made me guilty of greatly underestimating you...NICE JOB!
I'd like to see more development of the body particularly the feathers/fur.
-Me
Romance was right it is busy. I wanted to include that background image because its actually the original piece I created as an entry and I spent alot of time on it...the full size/res image I'm pretty happy with. I realized though that I didn't show enough of the creature in it so it became a background. I like the piece alot, but the description was particularly fun to create which is surprising because anyone who's read this far can tell that writing is not one of my forte's(sp...'=accent). I've never done anything like this though and I think its an decent job....one I'm sure I'll go back to work on soon.
To be continued. I don't want foz to close the post b4 I post this, I'm a newbie and I'm not sure if further replies are allowed after he closes it, but I figure I can edit this one for sure.
PS Fozzybar Nice admin job...Thank You
