Well, Ill try to make visible to myself and to you some sort of evolution in both perception of realworld and confidence of stroke.
My main inspirations for this SketchBook are going to be, in no particular order the sketches of Egon Schiele, Phil Hale, Kent Williams, Klimt, Dave McKean and Lucien Freud.... All of the sketches are going to be from real life and most of them in the london underground...

The first ones are the ones i did 3 or 4 years ago and some ive done in the past month.. between periods i did a lot of 3d and no drawings whatsoever.

i thought the cats and the last guy were really nice. nr.s 3,4,5 and 6 are abit too close for me to warrant such big exposure. if you want them to work as a series, i would make them a bit smaller and post them two next to each other.

keep it up

Nice start to your sketchbook, I can really get a feel for the Schiele influence in some of your figures and some of the faces. I liked the twisted figure sitting in the chair. The detailed figure against the plain almost cartoonish chair is a nice touch. The faces have some great expressions in them. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for stopping by my thread and leaving such cool comments, I haven't updated in a week and I'm inspired to get crackin' again. When I first looked a the gouache hand study I didn't think anything much, but when I came back to it and stared at it and looked at the subtle use of browns and the reds in between the fingers, it spoke a little more to me. As a study goes, I like it. In the couch oil study, I like the soft glow of light, it makes for a comfortable scene. Her upper leg seems a bit big, but then again, maybe that slight exaggeration is just what this needs. The papaer sketch, I really like. Your line has a stiffness to it, but in a good way. A stiff flow, if that makes sense. I like the arm and the fingers, this all has character. can't wait to see the newer works.

Heyas Mad,

Cheers mate!!! I loved the term stiff flow youve used and i wish that if someday i have my stroke evolved i can still keep that term visible in my work.

Ive done a few sketches today:

That guy is seriously asleep and you can see it on his face. The perfect model. Everytime I try to draw someone they are always moving around. I think you're doing a good job with capturing the expression with the least amount of lines, this one really works.

Just love the squished guy under the lightbulb, I think I'm in that 'room' more often than not :). That woman on the bottom has a kind of ogre pose going on. I like how you echoed her curly, knotted hair in her nether regions.

Man, what you do with line...most excellent.

Hey man thanks for droping by (over at my place), and leaving some crit.
Now; lets talk about your work.... you've got some wicked stuff going on.
That Handstudy and some of your first pics, remind me of the Wiener session (Egon Schiele, Kokoschka...) love it. And that guy squeezed into that room whith the bulb on top, is very interresting samewell cuz you were expressing some idea of yours. Would like to see more of these.
I have to dissagree with most people in here about sleeping guy (#12),
to me he looks kindoff like he'd be koncentrating real hard on actually sleeping. Perhaps its the high contrast off the lines that makes him look almost agressive instead of peacefull and quiet.
Oh, well...so long...

Well, I'd be happy if you posted everyday because I'd have something cool to look at. I checked out your links and was very impressed by your art and photos. Some of those photos of the brick houses would look great as ink drawings or in watercolor. I like all of your undergound sketches. The shaking of the train adds something to them, I think. I like the nervousness that it gives off. Some of the drawings that you have remind me of something that I would see in Heavy Metal; maybe that the Kent Williams influence. Some of his comic stuff from Epic magazine and Heavy Metal were just brilliant. I see some of that in your sketches. Keep on posting!

Hey Mario - its cool to see you here - your wolverine is one of my favourite 3d projects on the net.

Nice sketchs - some of the ones without ref look a bit flat but I really like the loose heavy lines you are using - gives a lot of character and sense of movement.

Most excellent batman sketch. He has this WTF?!! look on his face. Great. A nice little added touch is the zipper; combined with his expression that just adds to it, well, to me anyways.

I agree with Nutter about not too many happy faces, but who would be crammed on a train for an hour or more? Besides, sometimes those grumpy faces are kind of interesting to draw.

November 23rd, 2005, 05:47 PM
Hello guys,

Andrew, Thanks for the words on wolverine:) and i totally agree about the flatness on some of the sketches. So much that my main focus now is to get rid of it. thanks for the eye opener.

Nutter, Thank you. i want to get those lines flowing:) and yeah, i really prefer the sad/introspective ones.. and its not hard to find them. Thanks:)

Mad, Hello my friend, thanks on the batman:) On the sad faces, i dont think it would interest me doing a happy expression... the person wouldnt call my attention.. unless is some sort of desperate smile or something lol PS. Great sketches youve posted man wow!

Todays:

She was perfect. i loved the way she seated and the way she was dressed.. i did like 6 sketches of her alltogether in 6 different poses. When i was doing this one she noticed me.. and that was the interesting part: She noticed me drawing her, looked at me for a moment, smiled, and came back in pose so i could finish the sketch. fantastic.

Hey man, it's great that you take advantage of the daily train rides to do these cool expression filled sketches. At least that girl was comfortable enough to let you sketch her, usually people get all nervous and look away. Thanks for letting us know that that was a book she was reading. That's was funny. This is fast becoming one of my favorite stops. See ya.

Ey Mario, thanks for dropping a note in my book. Love the looseness of your sketches, makes em lively, be careful that they don't become cluttered up though. The cleaner pencil drawings are ok, but miss the life the loose ones have. You could try and combine both techniques, think more about how you place your lines, but keep your hand loose and sketchy.

Hey Mario, what a twisted collection of sketches this time around! So, is that top one a commentary on Brando? If you'd have shown him in his later years, he wouldn't even be able to see either of his creations. Well, not with a lot of help, that is. I like the older scribbled Brando, it has the weight of years in his expression. Your fat aristocrat is similar to sketch I did last week when I was playing around with a humorous take off on Titian's Venus Of Urbino. I was going to call it Venus Of Urbana, or something like that. All of your figures have such character in them and they all have a story to tell.

Haha excellent - I think between you and me and anyone else out there, the phantom of the tube artist will have to start taking some sort of shape in the consciousness of Londoners. Though I draw pretty much exclusively from information when on the tube, as I guess I'm not 100% confortable with the confrontational aspects of drawing someone in front of me.

I love the sketches, extremely fast and vibrant, capturing the lines quite simply. Definitely something I need to try and emulate when drawing from life - when I go for the accuracy i tend to be a bit slow and laborious. But yeah, we both get compared to Schiele one way or another I notice :)

The imaginative pics are a little flat, it's true. It seems to me that perhaps you''m gonna make a leap in the dark here and wonder if you've been to one of the big art schools? It seems to me that the art school way of teaching is often kinda the opposite of the guys who grew up reading comics etc. For those presented with models every day, there seems to be less need to form a really strong mental model of the human body, they work from reference almost exclusively. Whereas for me, who got no exposure to life models and do almost everything from imagination, I guess I pushed myself harder to memorise. Maybe this isn't even true, but I guess I'm just interested in what's going on there - your ability to capture the face with such speed is really great.

Anyway dude, but great to see you out with the uk lot one time - stunning stuff!

Cheers

Fred, Thanks man!! I think Brando rocks too!!

Mad, Heyas man:) Haha thats for sure man. he was really fat at the end.... Did you post your titians variation?? id like to see it. and yeah i agree this last update was a bit on the sick side. Thanks for the comments man Keep making me post more mate:)

Heartbeat, Thank you for your comments:) the cats are from life yes.. i had to leave him (luke) with my aunt when i moved to london... Brazilian cats are not allowed here.. I miss him a lot:S

Dirty, Cheers for the comments mate, I didnt know you also sketch in the tube..are they anywhere around here? (CA)

I agree with you guys when you say my mindsketches are flat... and i think it is because im more used to sketch from life indeed.. i never did any art schools and i started drawing when i was 13 because of Mcfarlane's green goblin... but a few years later i decided to go from life and never looked back.. so probably my imagebank is empty. Also, i understand ( did a long time ago) i dont have any talent for drawing and i am okay with it. what makes me carry on doing it is the pleasure i get from the process.. especially on the tube... I work with 3d fulltime and there is nothing more solitaire and boring than being a cg operator... drawing from life puts you face to face with people and thats a bliss...

Ive visited your sketchbook a while ago and it is amazing. I wish i could have the same skills and talent you do. thanks for visiting my SB mate. On Passion Pics, yeah! its an amazing place man. im loving it. let me know about anything on that eh?

Todays:

I like coming here because your sketches always seem to have something to say, no matter how quick or small. They're interesting these faces on the train. Talent wouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind when I look at your work, it's skill. You have it, it may be raw and unrefined, but you have it and the process is what it's all about and the fact that you enjoy this process shows in your sketches. Sometimes finishing a piece is a letdown because it is finished, so you are a true artist my friend.

I haven't sketched the Titian version, yet. I have all of these little sketches on little scraps of paper that need to be realized. I just need a little push now and then.

I see a little Kent Williams in those last figures. Cool. At least that guy text messaging sat still long enough to sketch, that was awful nice of him.

ucci - just dropping in to say im checking this stuff everytime. love the scratchyness and i personally like the flatness popping up every now and then. its a real different style from yours but i went to this massive hokusai exhibition and i really liked how a lot was mixing illusion of 3d form with graphic 2d flatness. anyway - keep it up man.

Mad, Thanks for the nice slap in the head buddy. In one hand you have the pleasure in the process and in the other hand you want to make a good enough work so people can compliment you and admire you.. it is a contradiction in a way isnt it? If the pleasure in the process was all i needed i wouldnt be making this SB... I also need you to look at my work and talk to me. And in the long run, the best of it is the friends i made. thanks a lot man.:):)

Very cool man, you never disappoint! That lady at the bottom looks very tired. I think you captured that perfectly.

I agree with what you are saying; it's kind of a double edged sword being an artist sometimes. I struggle with my ego from time to time, but it's true; we all need the attention. But it also helps us grow as artists and people too, I think. And at the very least, it's entertaining as all hell. Talk to ya later, pal.

I think I may have found someone that works slower than me! I can see why you prefer loose sketches because of your work. That wouldn't have occurred to me. That's ok, keep giving us those sketches however they may develope.

Wow.... sooo much new stuff in so short a time.
(Despite work, family an all)
You seem to be traveling by tub a lot ;)
It's so exciting watching your scetches. Some are good. Then you stumble over something that is (which is more important, even damn interesting / provocating/ original). That not being enough, from time to time you do something, that also reveals that you have quite some knowledge on anatomy and a vivid sense on phsychology samewell. That's like a slap across the face. Like; gotcha...didn't think I could come up with something like that, did you. (Specialy last update)
(I often leave a "whish list before coming to an end at a crit" (I never expect it to be followed by........but....ehm, you could tell Santa, perhaps he'll grant me the pleasure of seeing some customized
marriouccies........) Anyways, what I'd like to see till crismas, might be some more stuff done with colour pencils or gouache or something.....
(I'm so selffish, I should go and think my life over again...)

Hello Guys,

Tensai, I can feel that im a bit more relaxed with the drawing compared with when i started this SB.. Thanks for the support.

Mad, Heyas Buddy:) Thanks!!! Thats good to hear. ill try to keep focusing in that type of sketching:0

Blacky, That was really inspiring... dont know what to say. thanks! ive been to your SB just now i loved the pink series. also your painting WIP. i was going to post a comment on yours but couldnt quite come up with anything after what you said to me here... give me some time to think about it.

Todays:

Spent the day doing nothing and then decided to do my favourite comic book char Lobo, mainly because the way Biz did him.

a bic pen version:

A 30 minutes PS version:

http://www.cgsalad.com/traditional/lobo_PS_www.jpg

After this PS painting i realized 2 things:

1 - I have a long journey into academic painting.

2 - It is not the time to do that.. only when i have a solid drawing.

Thank you for looking.

Oh, what the heck, jump right in, get your feet wet. Or at least your fingers full of paint. If you keep putting it off, you'll never do it.

Having said that, I like your digital painting. I like the background, except where it gets to the bottom. Is that a skull in the upper right corner? Or maybe just a happy accident.

Hypronost
December 4th, 2005, 04:31 AM
I agree with Mad, you should just jump right into it.
Any experience you gain now will teach you something, no mather what the result.
Just like this painting will have helped you with the next.

I like it alot, although it's a bit dark and could use some more highlights and mayby stronger midtones.

cheers

Mad, the painting made even more evident that the drawing is bad.. ill keep trying to improve the sketching for a while still. and yeah:) it was an accident.. cheers buddy:)

Fred, yeah man... it way too contrasted.. i need more experience in the mid tones to keep it balanced. thanks for the critcs..

That one of your wife is pretty good for three minutes. The forearms don't look quite right and she looks cranky. Was she perterbed at you sketching her? Just kidding around. It's a good sketch; it has emotion. And even with the last two, they capture some character in their body language.

Hello

Dirty, thanks. i prefer the long necked one because of the wicked pose and because the "model" moved from the position, looked at me, and then got back into it so i could finish. it was very kind of her and im sure she did it on purpose cos she had a half smile going on afterwards.

Mad, thanks. yeah she was a bit tired it was almost bedtime. cheers:)

Baki, Thanks. and yeah the anatomy is not quite right and the light is coming from everywhere.. i hated it..

Hey dude, really nice sketches. Like the line sketches a lot - you have very nice control over you linework. When shading using cross hatching try to use less chaotic strokes. Although they work fine for showing form they can be confusing when it comes to showing texture. Like the faces you've drawn - you can see the form very good but the cross hatching suggests that they are made from some thick clay.

As a huge Biz and his interpretation of Lobo fan - i can say that the resemblance in the inked drawing is huge :) And the coloring looks sweet too.

Keep it up.

Har, har... I was just being lazy. Am at work right now and anytime I try do draw, I can't resist comming back to this site. It's addictive.....oh,...we were talking about your new update weren't we?... I like last image a lot, but what are those flowerthingies supposed to be ?(I know its her cloth, but could samewell be some drapery or sth. ) Can't distinguish iris of her eye eather. Were's she looking at, is she dead? I like the one above a lot too. Especialy the S-shape of his body which matches to his facial expression. His Tatoo's really funny too. Concerning Alice and some other ones, I think you should darken background behind figure (only on one side), sort off like you did at 2nd from top. About first guy.... that's what a sleeping person looks like. Good job (I criticised some other sleeping dude earlier) Very woby, soft lines and relaxed facial expression. Concerning those stars you drew behind Alice in Wonderland (she looks real old), I don't think they go with the way you drew the rest (too cartoonish/ simplified), again, some dark background, enviro, might have helped (specialy to enhance figure /outlines)
Thanks for noticing that I'm trying real hard on being a cool kid in my posts ;)
(I got two friends (semiginiouses(from their point of view) that can crit anything into rubbish. That might have been an influence on me.)

Hey Mario, interesting update (as always). I like how on that first one the guys head has the same texture as his fur(?) liner and it seems as though they merge together. Alice is funny and that would look good in color. Old Alice is looking a bit mannish, I don't think that I ever saw her portrayed that way. Keep the odd imaginative stuff coming. Is your ever fear having a bad tattoo and long fingernails? Just kidding, although it is weird that those two aspects stood out for me. And how can I resist something that was Klimt inspired? Now, that would look good colored. See how many sketches that you have that would be interesting to develope further with color? I agree with Blacky that this is an addictive thread.

Hey guys, Im still sketching everyday.. something that happened to me 2 days ago:

I went for a photoshoot with the actor Im gonna be modelling for my next job.
We sit all together, me, the actor Ben, the producers Miles and Stef… I go:
“Ben, I know you from somewhere…”

He goes:
“Yeah man me too.”
me:
“Where from? Passion pictures?? some pub??”

Ben:
“Nopes”
Ben:
“I know!!! I was in the tube one day.. and you started sketching me didnt you? You were wearing shades and I thought - Oh this guy is sketching me.. how do you react to that?”
And instantly I remembered!! I did a sketch of him cos he had a very interesting face. Indeed
Go figure how those things happen. Im just happy they do… Wish they would happen more often.. Its the closest to magic we have in this grey world of ours.

Updates to come for sure my friends.

all the best to you all.

SMITHERINES, Thanks man.. but its not style.. its simply I dont interfere with the way the drawings come to me.. the way i draw them, they stay.. No correction and very litle conscious attempt to be precise. I am precise all day long working with 3d already:) but i definatelly will start dedicating a couple of hours to the study of anatomy and proportions. thanks man.

Reminds me of Lucian Freud somehow (http://www.cgsalad.com/traditional/painting_02.jpg).
Nice paints (out of nowhere)
Detail on faces is great in camparisson to the rest, thus making heads look out of place somehow. That effect is emphasised on that one (http://www.cgsalad.com/traditional/painting_03.jpg). When I see the head, I have the impression, its neck should be there, where shadow drops down. I like your pallete and the atmospere in those, although there's little of interest (focal point), except for atmosphere, on last one though.

Brutha Mario returned! So, how have you been? We're all still here and then some.
These digital sketches are nicely done, but they look a bit fuzzy in some of them and I think that the contrast could be pushed a bit further, more like in the 5th one. 2,3 and 5 are my favorites and it took me a bit to see the flowers in the shadows on the one. It was a neat effect, like they slowly emerged in front of me. cool stuff, I hope you post more often.

Woah man, I like those digis a lot :)

I always loved the speedy-impressionist-sketchy feeling in art. I'll keep an eye on this sketchbook for sure.

I also see you made some major improvement. Keep up the good work.

November 5th, 2006, 07:53 AM
Mad, my friend, thank you for the always pronto reply. I totally agree with you about the fuzziness and the contrast.. Im trying hard to not feel scared bout the stroke I put in so Im lil by lil leaving the airbrushed brushes for some more agressive ones.. this new batch will show a bit of improvement on that i hope. (let me know eh?)

Pesmerga, Thanks a bunch for mentioning a trace of improvment.. that is so important to hear!! thank you so much.

Ok for todays main dish I have 2 portraits of my wife and a freemind portrait.

the first one is thinking of Bacon.

The second one is looking at a photograph my wife took of herself a few years ago and the brush used there was my first artistic brush created in PS:)

the third one is just a study on non- airbrushed brushes.

Hope you like them

saludos muchachos and muchachas

mario man, ohisashiburi!
nice to see something of you again. it has been a long time since i've seen your book.
i like how you're playing with paints and some of the digi ones are cool
http://cgsalad.com/sketchbook/10.jpg
but i have to say they can't touch the analogue ones. like this one for example;
http://www.cgsalad.com/traditional/painting_03.jpg
i hadn't seen it but man, it looks absolutely wicked - it has this very nice character to it.
hope you will show us some more soon.. and that you're doing good.
take care,

Tensai, Thank you so much for the wicked Welcome back:) I totally see what u mean of the digi versus analog. and I agree in a way. now I wish I could have the same boldness with colors I have with digi in the analogs ones.. Ill try:)

2 more digi PS sketches.. really bad ones but necessary:

hmmmm
liked your traditional paints and pencilworks way more. pencils where light and easygoing.
last picture's colours are kinda muddy and dull. They look like it where a strugle to paint em.
Some deffinatelly are really nice though, whith a strong phsycologic appeal.

Hey Blacky,

thank you for the frank comment. I apreciate that. I am trying to get more familiar with colors and strokes using digital and hopefully the traditional gonna inherit the new knowledge.

Just bought painter today, it will be with me soon.

This next one was done in artrage, the latest version using very thinered oils only.

Tensai, my friend! Thanks a lot!!!
I am having a hard time trying to control everything (lines, colors, bending etc). I will try to do a few paintings without expression but rather technical like those fine inks I did a while ago just to see what happens. The eternal doubt between going full expression and full illustration...

Nice times twice (http://www.cgsalad.com/sketchbook/17.jpg)
kinda flat, too much unnecessary detail (http://www.cgsalad.com/sketchbook/16.jpg)

M@'s brushes really made the last one prove advantages of digital medium. Great execution too.

Nice, dude. Though try and make a separation between the amount of texture in the background and the amount of texture in the foreground. Or at least use less contrasting colours in the background, so that the eye has a chance to rest in the non-focal areas.

hey there! thanks for your kind words in my book! really like what i see here - especially the fast and loose sketches. the digis are coming alonmg great, the last ones have this almost "sculpted" feel to it that i like a lot. in the last one, maybe the chin area is slightly too short - but i enjoy how you played with lights and shadows in that one. keep them coming! cheers,

hey there, love that "underground-saturday-sketch". despite (or maybe because of?) some anatomical issues, it shows a lot of character. i think, over all your linework is getting a lot more confident in the last few posts, so that's great! all of them have a very dynamic feel. hope to see more soon, happy holidays!

madplanet

hey Mario,
The pencil sketches look good and I agree with what Stine said about anatomical issues. But, I think that's just it with your work whether it's a sketch or a more detailed painting is the character that you bring forth. For me, that's what is so appealing about the stuff that you show. I think I could recognize an "Ucci" face just about anywhere, ha, ha.

I really like the two faces of the bearded guy. Love the expression and I think that you could push these even further. And if I don't type to ya over the weekend, have a great holiday.
