The Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin, voicing strong criticism of Christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally.

$55 bucks says the fundamentalists will claim devilry to be at work in the Vatican and proceed to denounce the Pope.

The pope is Palpatine in disguise!!!
Ok on a serious note. I've been looking at this whole ID business and I just found it funny.
1. Heredity and Genetics was actually discovered by a vatican scholar!
2. Darwin proposed evolution, natural selection. It was deviant from the creationist context as we all know. IIRC Darwin was also partly influenced by the studies made by the Vatican regarding heredity and genetics.
3. Fast forward to today, genetic science enables humans to manipulate life to a degree.
4. Because of THAT ABILITY TO MANIPULATE LIFE, creationists find ammo to feed their ID theory.
Quite amazing really. And funny at the same time. I guess evolution goes both ways....some evolve to advance, others evolve to track back to things we discarded before.

-The pope is satan in a fancy gown, but I don't always disagree with him and such is the case here.
-Only I think it would be better stated in the spirit of epiphenominalism that, instead of creationism and evolution being compatible, which here implies that there is some inference to the other in the doctrines of each, they simply do not conflict.
-It's like the mind and the body or the digital and analog, they pretty much function autonomously without interfereing with each other, allowing an all-encompassing reign in their respective realms of activity. Yet there is still room in our conceptions and logic for them to both exist.
-Or I could be wrong, but unfortunately we'll probably never know.

This is how it starts, people innocently talking about Evil Popes and Intelligent Design. Before you know it, "WHAM!", eight page, pointless argument about evolution.
Ye've been warned!

("Pft! Who listens to the Village People anymore?")

Oh my! Next they'll be saying that the Bible isn't really the word of God, but actually a compilation of short fables written by a popular Jewish children's author in 140CE.

I believe people came from a monkey's ass, and that we evolved from pond scum......and I believe God did that deliberately to teach us humility.
I also believe that for every day God created the heavens and the earth that was a 2 billion years. God created the Earth in 7 days. The Universe is about 14 Billion years old from start of the Big Bang....sounds right to me.
The Bible claims Adam was created from clay. I hardly see too much difference between that and evolving from pond scum.....and Adam was created on the 8th day by the way.
That creationism thingy just makes us sound a little too special. Personally, I think people should be pegged down a notch or two.
In actuality I see alot of parallels between Genesis and Evolutionary theory.
I also believe that your beliefs have no more merit then my beliefs and vice versa......because you can't prove it one way or another.
And I don't believe that God put all these fossils on the Earth to confuse us or doubt our Faith.....I just believe clues were left around for us to discover and make us realize how complicated and amazing things really are.
Modified quote.

I think somebody at the Vatican read my thoughts on evolution....hey, leave alone. I like my little delusions.

Pope John Paul also supported evolution, but as far as I know never went so far as to denounce fundamentalists because of it.
Go Popes!

Bwahaha. Just give them 200 years more and the church will be atheist.

Tihihihi. But seriously it's not THAT pointless. It generates unintended comedy!

Yes that was shown in the evolution of trilobytes. Except that in this case it's intelligent de-evolution and natural self-selection.
On another note: Fundies denounce the church anyway so it's not like it makes any difference to them what the church says. Fundies will always spout out ignorance and stupidity.

As far as I know, evolution has been taught to be true in Catholic schools for quite a while. But, God had to get the ball rolling. Their belief is that they can coexist without compromising core beliefs.

I dunno if Darwin ever said that Evolution explains the beginning of life. But it definitely clarified the reason why there are species.

Evolutionary theory doesn't try to explain the origin of life. Since it requires life to be present for evolution to happen, the actual genesis is out of its scope.
Besides, we all know the FSM did it.
