we started a new medium this week called watersoluble caran dache. they are just like crayons actually. you basically layer them the same way you do with pastels. hope you like!

killing: me too! i really need to go out and do some more oil painting. and you should too!
deth: yeah they are kinda waxy and its pretty easy to get a good tip on them too. james wu is the zen master of color. his stuff is always so vibrant and awesome. he sees colors that i never see. i have learned more about color from him than anyone or anything else.

If you developed this color view from Wu, he's quite a teacher!
I noticce that you use warm on one side and cool on the other for your background - is this a color technique that he teaches or is it from elsewhere? It's just that this color structure is not uncommon but it is so strong here yet it is quite believable and adds to the energy of the piece. Any details or secrets about that?
Also what sort of underpainting or sizing have you used to give the sweeping lines of texture?

...and the luminosity is fantastic! Where are you taking his class, btw? Ah, I just saw it in your profile.... I went there a long time ago... ;) great school!

kellam: using contrasting temperatures for back and fore grounds always helps to pop out the face. nothing really secret about it i guess, heh. as for the texture, i put gesso on some illustration board.
