ROUND #3
-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------
Serren, Transdimensional Dragon Hunter
Serran is human, but from an alternative dimension, so there’s some oddness about her that you can’t quite place.
She is controlled, manipulative, treacherous, vile, cunning, a murderer and a technophile, loving all sorts of technology with a special love for Jules Vernish mechanical aparati and gadgets. She views pretty much everyone else as a tool of some sort to be used or exploited for her own ends, including her employers.
Physically, she’s roughly about mid height (about 5 ½ feet), slight of build, with pale skin, though not albino. Her features are not ugly, but not unpleasant to look upon either. She typically wears an authentic WWII American Bombardier’s Jacket, and often wears a necklace or belt made from dragon teeth (small ones).

I'm confused by the double negative. "Her features are not ugly, but not unpleasant to look upon either. "
Does that mean then that she isn't ugly, but isn't pretty either. That's how I read it, just want to clarify.
Awesome topic though! These have just been stellar Oregano!

I was looking for creative ways to say she's "plain Jane" >:| :perv: :S

It means what it means, shes not ugly and shes not cute, meaning shes inbetween and easy on the eyes although shes no miss america, shes average. Not that I will probably have the time for this but I would go for the girl next door type of look, where she has a certain attractiveness through an average look to the everyday man but sexy in a unique humbled kind of way. pfft.. I think the Nyquil is hitting me, im gonna go to bed.

I think the confusion came as what says "Her features are not ugly, but not unpleasant to look upon either. " is meant to read as not pleasant instead of not unpleasant (?)

no, they have it right. if you say not pleasant that means icky, unpleasant would also mean icky. but not unpleasant means hey, this bitch is ok looking.

Jules Verne??! Google is my friend...Man, I love how different the requirements are for each round. Like there is no set pattern for the art brief which makes it unpredictable. Props to Oregano. I tied up Andrew and Scum in my basement so they won't be posting first this round...

Since 'the accident', experimental restructuring has further outcast her from society, and survival instincts force her to become a hunter. With a custom made hook, she's the ultimate lure. Extremely agile, this young terror attracts a victim and thrusts her hook deep towards crucial organs. Basically, Serran > dragons.
With her mechanical alterations Serran can no longer fit into her grandfather's Bombardier's jacket, but insists on keeping it by her side.
Anyway, been trying out new rendering techniques...
EDIT: Also, Andrewley... your painting rocks my socks; in fact, they just exploded off my feet.

Yo peoples,
I got some pokes to join in on one of these. Got a day off on sun, so I decided there would be no better time to do it. It is just a quickie, but I really love this chow thing soooo,,,,,, I really wanted to participate. I see A lot of the ones already posted are more worked up and colorful,,,,,,,, but I guess I am stressing the participation part of the whole thing and I don't thing it will really be a competitive peice. Had a little trouble incorporating the flight jacket the way it should look ( puffy and big, hehe) so I really took liberties with the part of the description that said " authentic WW2 flight jacket". I just settled on wanting the char to be more lithe and athletic looking, and that sort of forced me to show her belly and stuff,,,,,,,
Hats off 2 andy ley, that girl looks so much like the description, it really could predate it. Love the style.
Sunny, nice,,,,,, I like what you did with "looks a little off, but is hard to place",,,,,,,,,way to put a dragon in it, too. cheers
Neoknocker, sweet, I really hope you slap some color to it, it is a swell graphite rendering.
4thangle, lots of emotion and a great palette. Love your little blurb as well, good luck.
So here it is, I will be posting the wip in my SB (hence the signature @ the bottom) thread if anybody is interested in it. :rendered: All in photoshop, time spent: about an hour and 45 minutes (for now) EDIT and another hour or so for the new version..
******************************EDIT**************** *********
Serran, the dragon defiler. This gruesome and vile woman hunts and kills the most docile and rare of all animals, the flying wurrums. In a cunning bit of beurocratic contrivance, she travels trans-dimensionally and thru time to avoid tarrifs and poaching regulations set up to allow the dwindling numbers of the terrific giants to replenish itself. She has stolen top secret weapons technologies from multiple dimensional time streams, always killing the inventors. Her weapon of choice is an energy shift "hard light" gauntlet, which she wears on her left hand. A dour and unpredictable temperment often leads her into situations where she is obliged to use her dimensional-hopping abilities to hamstring possible competition and wildlife agencies' efforts to curb her bloodlust. She is wanted for the pre-murders of up to seven gamepark wardens, all killed in their cribs before they ever fulfilled their time/fate arcs. If seen, this treacherous, baseless maniac should be shot until dead, at which point the corpse shall be partitioned and destroyed in turn.

Excuse me.
Yes, of course you may edit your work until you are satisfied with it. I do suggest having your final edits in before 8:59 PST because I start collecting entries then for the voting round. (Actually, I start around 8 or 8:30, but don't tell anyone :P )
IF YOU ARE CUTTIN IT CLOSE, make sure you overwrite your file so any updates are automatic and your final gets in. But I suggest trying to be done before then :)

This one's fun.
Sunny Lovely Dragon and gaunglet. And the face. Crit: I'd like it more techno and maybe more transdimensional :) .
AndrewLey I admire your style and technique (and speed) (and concepts). Sweet details. Crit: I'd like it (much) more techno and more deadly (you want to kill a dragon with that?)
neoknocker Not bad, but it's only a pencil sketch, so it's hard to compare (and you could put some work into scanning it in parts and stitching on computer afterwards. Nice goggles, gun and face.
4thAngle Seems like it would need some more work, but the concept is very interesting. And somehow she's just deadly enough.
codakromek Very nicely painted and I like her outfit a lot. Crit: Too little techno as for me and the image isn't clear enough for a character concept (ex. I like the way you did the trousers, but I don't really know how they look).
As for me: better than the my merchant, but could be better if I had more time (maybe I'll have, but I don't know). I have to pay more attention to anatomy :P . But I'm proud of the gun :) .

general crit for most of you, although they look really cool, a lot of you arent following the guidelines as well as you should.. most of them arent wearing a wwii bomber jacket, nor do they show much "steampunk" influence.. transdimensional can be anything, but jules verne-esque is alot more specific, and the jacket is an essential.. just my thoughts..

if you want visual reference, watch the film adaptions of h.g. wells' "the time machine", alan moore's "league of extraordinary gentlemen", jules verne's in "80 days around the world" or steamboy and wild wild west.. all of these give a good example of how jules verne-ish steampunk designs tend to look..

This one is pretty good;
http://jv.gilead.org.il/
If you click on "The Illustrated Jules Verne" you'll get hundreds of the original illustrations of his books.
The tounge in cheek name for the genre is "steampunk", which is Victorian society with futuristic technology. You can make it a little gothic too if you want.
Look up movies like The Time Machine, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Wild Wild West, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days, Atlantis, etc..
Main Loop is right too, they use if in alot of the Final Fantasy stuff.

I haven't posted here more than once or twice...mostly I just lurk. But I loved this character idea, and by coincidence I'd been collecting neo-Victorian and steampunk themes for my own projects, so I decided to join in. Here's my attempt at Serren:

This one was kinda tough because I figure a woman who is capable of taking out dragons herself must have way more than meets the eye. Transdimensional aspects are difficult to imply unless it is with slightly alien dimensions (such as much narrower/longer features) or with gear. Hopefully the impression is of someone who could be pleasant but doesn't really care about you unless you're a part of her next plan.
The expression and pose were supposed to suggest that she spends a lot of time thinking about the mechnizations of her next hunt. I think she probably needs more weapons to show the tools of her trade but perhaps that will need to wait until I've warmed up more to this exercise.
Strong entries so far but am I the only one having trouble with that word "transdimensional" in this one?

"Serren had always been the best among us dragonhunters, and she never stopped hunting, even after the activity was outlawed by the government because of the near-extinction of the common dragon. She was still out there, getting stomped and burned every day, even though she was considered a criminal by the authorities and the public.
I last met her a few years ago. When I asked her about it, she just said 'I have always been a criminal. The law just caught up with it too late.' and laughed her way into the forest, holding tight to her antique whale harpoon. Since then, when I dream about dragons, their roar always sound like that laughter. It haunts my sleep.
While most of us were more than happy to stop hunting and get jobs at dragon ranches, she never let anyone retire her. It seemed she had an obssession about those magnificent creatures, and most of all bout the ritual of killing them. Somebody once told me a dragon swallowed part of her prized Jule Verne memorabilia collection and she wants revenge; but of course I don't believe that. Not after I had seen those fiery eyes."

having trouble with that word "transdimensional" in this one?
Essentially, someone who crosses dimensions on a regular basis.
Because she's not from our dimension, but an alternative "Reality Next Door", she's familiar enough to be human, but has subtle aspects of her that don't quite "click" so to speak - this could be just about anything, but I figure it's going to be to something seen right off. More of an "OH!" discovery.
Hope that helps!
Anyway, I've got to find time to do one this week myself! Arg!

This looks like being a bumper turnout. And yes Jeff, I'm suprised too about the Jules Verne stuff, but I guess there's no reason why people should have heard of him. However, if you've never read anything by him or H G Wells, get out there and do so! This is my first post to this forum ever, so hi!
I wanted her to be be somewhat like a traditional dragon slayer, so she's wearing armour. I also made her face slightly inhuman since she's from another dimension.
I'm thinking she needs to track down the dragons before she captures them, so she needs a bunch of navigation and detective-like tools. She doesn't have any big weapons or anything, she's more like Steve Irwin :) She probably brings weapons when she's looking for really big dragons though.

Here's mine. She's loves steam-powered junk so much she doesn't even mind that the contraption on her back has never worked (not once) in all her dragon hunting career. At least the quasi dragon wings gives her a certain amount of ambiguity while hunting in the wilds. She calls it her lucky charm. Its really just a happy little accident...

hi all,
Again, I love the variations! Very fine work from everyone! here's my attempt:
Despite her ruthlessness, Serren's favorite WWII movie and childhood hero is Indian Jones (wanted to tie in something different, hehe!). Although she lives up to his skill with the whip luring and aggravating dragons, her selfishly dark character leaves much room for improvement.

"Well...uh...yeah."
"What kind of bleeding idiot do you think I am? Look, it's quite simple: dragons are tough, but they ain't smart. Lure them into a tar pit, and they can't get themselves out. Some feather-brained drags try and flame themselves out...puh, they just fry to death instead of suffocating."
"Well...it just doesn't seem sporting-like."
"Why the f would I want to be sporting?? Look, you hired me to kill the dragon. It's dead, I'm paid, and you can just go back to your provincial life, savvy?"

Hi! My name is Serran! I'm 26, female, and from another dimension. I enjoy doing crossword puzzles, long walks at the beach, interdimensional traveling and dragonslaying.
I'm really lonely killing these dragons all by myself, so you guys and gals out there willing to acompany me on my interdimensional journies are most welcome to! We can go for mai-tais or piña coladas later, whatever you preffer. Then you can maybe show me what the nightlife is like in your dimension, I'll wear my dragonslaying gear ; )
Here I'm sending you a portrait of me, done by a lazy artist. See how my facial tattoos make me look like I'm pouting? I'm actually angry if you look at my eyebrows, because the artist was taking too long. Thats my angry face. Grrrr.
Guys and gals interested in this add can reach me at serranthedragonslayer@crazydimension.com
Hope to hear from you and kill a few dragons. Buh bye!

m@, you're kidding, right? That is near-realistic. Love the colors, and that's what is making it look really good. Very impressive!

Holy crap! There's a lot of absolutely amazing entries -- I'll see if I can meet my crit-em-all goal come voting time.

Wow, the last 12-24 hours have brought some of my favorite entries. 73 entries? That's unbelieavable. It almost seems like a crime to have to pick ONE winner. Great work everyone, and especially Oreg...your baby is growing by the week.
