How do you guys react to younger people who you think are better at you at Art? They featured this 18 yr old girl on tv who's been into Art since she was very young and has been painting since then. Her paintings aren't that crazy but she has a good eye and I feel that she could go far if she received proper training. I also realized that she's more passionate about this than I am. So I have to admit, this gave me a slap in the face. haha. She's only 18 and that talented, when I was 18, I didn't know anything. I have no doubts about my skill, I know I'm good at Art, but I feel that she's better. Anyway, it would be stupid if I let myself down on this, so I will have to move on and be more focused!

I wanna know if you guys have similar experiences.

Thanks!

I have no problem with it. I work with a ton of guys & gals who are younger than me, and they're all better than I am. Instead of getting discouraged I try to learn from them, and I have....a lot. Age really isn't important, especially if you enjoy what you do.

If anything, I just say "Wow" and try to push myself more. I agree with Dougbot, age is only a number. We're all in this thing we call art, and as someone said on CA before, you're never as good, or as bad as you think you are.

there's always somebody better, so what difference does it make how old they are?

patdzon - I have no idea how old you are, but I'm going to be 35 this month ( :x ) so that means that's there are tons of kids out there far more talented than I have a hope of being.

My reaction is confined to hitmen. They're efficient, relatively cheap, and they're versital. Plus, they need little to no instruction beyond "break their fingers for me, Vinny."

The only problem would be that you will probably die sooner, because you are living in the same time line that she is. In other words, your art will be better that she´s for a long time, she might catch up with you early, but only if you slow down. So you are getting troubled about how a person could be better than you at your age.....or how would it be if you had her talent at that age....think about it, and you will find out that that type of concern is ilogical and meaningless :)

Why?, becuase you cant fix it, and becuase it doesnt matter, you are more experienced that she is, and probably still will be for the rest of your life, will she become better than you?, i dont know your age difference, but if much, then you would be probably retired, or become an art director/teacher or just die before she does become better than you.

Truth is, i undestand what im saying, and i cant explaint it efficiently right now, but think about it without the context of what could happen or the feeling of regret and it will come to ya.

Cheer up :)

I hate these people .. & thats also a good reason to never introduce the idea of showing our age beside our username ... & try to avoid them ... I especially hate them when they say .. "uhhh i really hate my quick sketch I did" - when in fact it is in fact something I could maybe dream about being able to do in years to come.

If they are inconfident ... maybe hammer them into the ground .. get them to stop with art .

Sorry bout I see many an artist out there as competition - & the less competition there is - the better IMO :D .

But as Shamagim said ... being older ( ... im in my 20's) .. as could as they may be .. their ideas will be limited by who they are & what age they are.

Im fortunate enough to think that some of my ideas are really cool <grin><massive smack from lots of irretated forumwanderers>

Oregano : "My reaction is confined to hitmen. They're efficient, relatively cheap, and they're versital."

Exactly :D
When I have some more money Ill invest in hitmen to get rid of my competition or invite competition & bury them in the cellar. :D
It worked for the two old ladies :)

i've met a LOT of young artist who i think are better than me.
usually,
we hang out.
we party, and have a good time.
i offer them alcohol, and they get drunk.
i offer them weed, and they get stoned.
then i offer them crack, and they pass out.
and when no ones looking...
I CRUSH THEIR PUNY TEENAGE FINGERS!
crush...crush...crush.

I don´t care.
I painted pretty well when I was 15 - 17 and in that time I wished that I had met anybody who said something like "hey I think you are good, I wanna challenge you". So I had wished to meet somebody like her when I was a teenager.
But earning a living from painting was never an option for me.
(And so I stopped painting when I was 19. It took me too long to get a pic finished back then and drawing comics now and then doesn´t cost any time and it is fun :) )

So I think it is only a matter of self confidence -how good you are, knowing where your weak points are.... and if it really matters to you if you meet somebody who can paint or draw better than you.
It is ok if you see it as a kind of challenge in order to push yourself.

But what *really* pisses me off are persons with middle-level or low-level skills who get some kind of inferiority complex whenever they see somebody who is on a higher level. :nohope:

If she´s 19 and draw like a master... hey man, that´s a cool thing. :)

It stopped me from creating art.

Not necessarily due to younger people, but people in general.

in art there's no age.

think how the old masters must feel.

No insecurities there.

Partly because I understand everyone is born with different talent levels. Also partly because I have a natural curiosity for things and I store a lot of information in my head. How does this even relate....well I've seen A LOT of younger artists who are so much better in terms of artistic ability, but when they're tasked to create realistic designs, they scramble to do some form of basic visual research while I already have a pretty good understanding and usually have a headstart.

In that sense age, knowledge and experience plays a big part.

No reason to discount their talents....and its even better if it spurs you to excel beyond your abilities right now. And don't forget there are tonnes of people who may be talented in something but have their passions lie somewhere else.
