Okay, I was wondering if someone could help me out. I've looked everywhere, including all over this forum and I haven't really found what I'm looking for. This weekend I am going to Boston to look at a couple colleges. I have heard really bad things about the AI schools (though as hard as I looked, nothing speciafically about the New England Institute of Art), so that's becoming really not even a consideration any more. I'm also looking at Emmanuel college... I'm not really sure about it being a Christian school and whether that'd really make a difference or not, but I really haven't heard too much about it and pretty much nothing about it's graphic design program.

I live in Rochester New York and I really don't want to go that far away from home let alone to Cali. I'd really like to find something around Boston or New York.

This is what I've looked at:
FIT - Doesn't really seem to have a graphic design program?
RIT - A good possiblity I think if my grades are good enough to get accepted.
Emmanuel - Again, really don't know much about it.
Boston Institute of Art - The real problem I see with them is the portfolio they require... they want pastel darwings, and things like that. I have a good deal of digital art, but not as much Ink/Pencil/Pastel art. I didn't have the opertunity to take a lot of art courses in highschool.
New England Insititute of Art - The program looks appealing to me anyways, heard horrible things about it though and that you really have to push extremely hard to get anything out of it when everyone else there doesn't care, and the price is high.

I guess that's it... if anyone can fill me in on just one of these school's or suggest some other ones, I'd be much appreciated. I'm getting kind of scared to tell you the truth. I'm in my senior year I've kinda just confirmed that graphic design is what I want to do... although I read another thread here where some guy said you'd be better off doing some general job like accounting for a living which was kind of confidence shrinker. Anyways, thx.

I'm currently living in NYC. But I am from Ithaca, NY.

I've been reasearching like crazy for the past two months and here's what I know about NY schools.

FIT - They have a graphic design program. And from what I hear, it's pretty good. Basically, since it's a huge fashion school, you get a lot of people looking at you when it's time for graduation. So jobs are good after. I know someone who went there for GD and she works at like Disney or Pixar... straight out of college.

Purchase College (SUNY) - Great school. Cheap, too. They have graphic design... but you'll apply to the Art+Design program, and focus on Graphic Design. It's great because you get a good variety, you have to take all of the core classes and everything. Plus, it's pretty easy to get accepted into. If you get rejected, keep bugging them until they let you in... that's the trick.

RIT - I guess they accept around 75% of people with portfolios, so don't give up hope.

School of Visual Arts in NYC - This seems like a great school. I read that they have the best computer systems/technology and everything. This is probably my top choice if money wasn't an issue... over FIT.

I really know nothing about Boston, but if you do please let me know! I am interested in applying to schools in Boston, too.

Forget what that guy said. You think Peter Saville or Neville Brody or Milton Glazer or Mike Mills or Saul Bass thought like that?
I say go all they way, and if you fail, at least youll fail miserably! I dont wanna be 60 thinkin "coulda shoulda woulda". And besides maybe that guy was crap, and in 3 years time you could be the next big thing!
I read a really good inteview with Mike Mills, where he said that part of what made him so big is the fact that when everyone else got a regular job and gave up when money got tight, he rummaged the change jar for nosh cash, all while he was in great debt. For quite a few years. Now hes the hottest shit.

Keep the faith!

And I meant the guy in the other thread, not Gavin! hehe

Have you thought about the midwest? Not as far as California but what about Columbus, Milwaukee, Kansas, Chicago, Detroit or Cleveland?
