you stopped pimpin to make some art? Congrats. I like your imagination stuff and your quick poses, but I think you need to work on your values more to enhance your longer poses. good shizzle man.

Dirty C
November 2nd, 2005, 01:20 PM
hey dude. yeah, reckon gauge might have a point there. tonal studies might be a good point for you to start looking into - monochromatic renderings of, preferably, still life stuff. that'll teach you a lot about observation (seeing where things lie in relation to each other via vertical lines, for instance). Great to see the progression since Prague.

Keep em coming

Good stuff Carnifex. You seem to have proportion issues with hands and feet. You would do well to study a bit on these they help everything else. Hands are great for expressing thoughts. You have like all, improved in Prague. I like n20.jpg even though it has issues. Keep Drawing!

Good lookin' pimp-daddy!

Like dirty_C said, some value-studies might do ya good! The latest COW looks good, but if the contrast was pushed even more, and you lost the underlying lines it would rock!

Keep 'em coming!

ohh loosing lines...that's one of my weakest points. can't work without underdrawing (yet).

BlackGuy
November 3rd, 2005, 12:34 PM
i think most artists use understructured lines, just try to clean them up as much as possible when you're done. I usually lose like 80% of mine in the shading, the rest I try to erase as much as I can with a kneaded eraser.

Nice 2nd sketchbook Carnifex. The zombie sketch you've got is simple but very defined with it's pose. Liking the family portrait too, the family unit's represented by creatures... yes!

mmh i only see the last one

mayby there's a bit too much black in that one

it has some instresting shapes, like on the hands, but the shape on the robe is pretty boring. Remember negative shape is really important. If you would just draw a black silhouette and it looks cool, you'll probably have a cool picture.

If you add design elements like that skull, you gotta make them count. No point in adding a skull if noone will notice it at first glance.

Keep it up man!

hey man ;)

finally posting in your sb hehe. you improved a lot and i especially like the last one (chow). the structure there is more believable.

thats probably a matter of taste... i dont know... i hope you dont get offended by me saying this. imo the biggest drawback of your art is the flimsy , unsecure and impatient strokes. and i think you could improve much faster by really studiing things. but well i allready told you that hehe so ignore me ;)

Hey man! I like the dryad! Also the brushpen stuff is sweet! I'd definately like to see more of that!

I have to agree a bit with sone_one on your shading... If you cleaned it up a bit, let the marks follor the form and such, it'd really bring your stuff up... however..they ARE sketches, and as such they're YOUR interpretation of stuff, so if it's your preferred method, ignore my rambling here..

Mr. Fex, nice work on the ChoW with the saleswoman, it's good seeing finished works. I'm liking the digi. you did of the spider-like creature, the thumbnails too. And as far as younger siblings that don't know any better, you just gotta let'em do what they think's right. They'll realize someday... or another. My brother's the same way with other things, and he's 20! So you just gotta wait, and then when they DO realize, you can laugh at'em all you want. Hahah.

You've pumped out some pretty imaginative stuff since i last visited your sketchbook. Your battle angel certainly looks convincingly lethal, I would define the hilights and shadows a little more, so everything doesn't look like its made from the same material. for example the sword could use some work to make it look sharp and hard.

cheers.

Carnifex
December 17th, 2005, 10:49 AM

Good works. Like the creativity of yours that shines through the greater half of your works.
So far I like the birdy at top the most...
You might want to draw some more from life to make your creatures more believable, so the'd work. I might recomet to give more thought to what image is going to be about, before starting it out.
Those lines might be a bit harsh, cuz you work a lot and are steadily improving.
So long....

Carnifex
December 17th, 2005, 12:22 PM

blacky
December 17th, 2005, 12:36 PM
This would be a fabulos idea. You could also take some different materials along. (not always pencil)
I know I love experimenting with materials, although one should experiment more with what one draws than how or with what materials.
I'd actually like to see some of you earliest posts, if it's still possible. Should be interesting, as I suppose that you've come a long way.
So long...

Carnifex
December 17th, 2005, 12:50 PM

Aquarellbased colourpencils work too. Just go out with em, draw as like you'd do with pencils, and rinse and smear em with water at home. Works in the bathroom. Don't even need brushes for it, just your fingers. :)

Steph Laberis
December 18th, 2005, 11:32 AM
Ah, a fresh new start! Did you kill your old thread though? It's always good to archive your oldest stuffs to see the full range of improvement :)

I like that you're exploring digital color with your pencil sketches, especially the bird on your badge and the neato CHOW chick. As far as overall crits go, particularly with some of your life drawings; there are some cases where you are very sensitive to forms and masses, and your outlines show that nicely. There are many other cases where your forms appear stiff and a little too simple (ovals for calves rather than more curvy forms, etc). It looks to me like when you draw, you tend to focus on outlines rather than drawing through the entire form - even when you shade, your cross hatching is sometimes very flat-looking rather than following the forms of your figure.

I guess stepping up sensitivity in those areas would help. :)

Bugger....

You have slipped aside my watchful eyes and created a new topic!!! Good onion, mate!

I have to tell you that there is many things I don´t like but there is also things that I do like. The female warrior whatever girly (on the earlier page (the one whoses tits you have as your avatar (good choice, young Padawan))) is totally nice! And the guy with the beak! And WHAT a beak!!! Ha ha ha!!! SUPERBEAAAAAKKK!!!

And about your life drawings... So you have made about hundred and these are the best ones? That is great. That you´ve made hundred. Now do another hundred. And so on... What I get from your imaginery work is that you don´t quite have such a solid base of anatomy and 3D-thinking that they pics would stand out. You know what I mean, there is that firmness or certainty missing... Often you also rely too much on the outlines and then the pics seem to stay a bit flat. They have the texture yes but not forms so much... I´d say do life, think what you did there (and I mean REALLY think!) and what you learned and then, same night do the same pose again as a fantasyfigure from memory or looking a bit of your earlier work... I dunno, SOUNDS good. Never done that myself but just started to feast on the idea that maybe... Ha ha, I am tired...

Hey I will come back since my babbling is only getting worse... Tschüss!!!

did you know that you have the second highest # of posts on CA?
You've come a long way since san francisco. Deffinatly try some new matierals doesn't have to be anything messy, try doing some pen& ink or something.. glad to see your playing around w/ color. I'm starting to follow in your example in reguards to keeping up with CA, been a bit neglegent lately. keeping my sketchbook updated & stuff. Your figure drawing is 100x improved... so keep drawing. Who knows what your stuff will look like in another year!

hey thanx you two. didn't expect replies THIS late.
updates will follow in about two weeks because i have no scanner...haven't been drawing that much though. had a little crisis...but because i know that the next workshop is coming (first one to sign up wooo!) i have overcome it i guess...gotta get into the habit of drawing daily again.
chromatic,i'm fully aware of my postcount. though i dunno how it got so high. mindless drooling over other pics i guess. you're right about new materials aswell...i've come to the conclusion that pencil doesn't quite fit my needs anymore. gotta start with real colour soon!
hiipi, take a close look at what's under the beak. if you can tell what it is you win a cookie.

because i'm angry that i don't have a scanner until the weekend, and because i finally found a copy of OPEN CANVAS 1.1 online! now guess what: i did a google search for it,and after tiresome searching i find some random forum where someone has posted links to free art programs (2d and 3d). now guess who that person is? dfacto. that's right,ca has struck again! ahhhh i luuuuurve you.<3
so here's a little doodle to bump this thing back up and to show my love for the program (god, really,it's so awesome!). hope it's not too hard on the eyes on your monitor (because my laptop lightens everything),and perhaps even the wpe works?

Male siren looks asum man, this last digital pice is nice but I feel it lacks
solidity, it need perhaps more deliverate strokes and contrast so that
we can fell the bulk, even if its meant to be a very baloon kinda of material.
I duunno how to explain this on words, try blocking out the main values
in solid color with cero opacy.

I hope this helps a bit, keep on experiment man, and never give up
ill be seeing ya later my friend! :^^:

Nice stuff, I like your creatures and anatomy. I think your shading can be improved. Remember the darkest part of the shadow on the object is where the light tangents the surface so to speak. On the other side of the object usually you have some reflected light. And also this area looks brighter because of less contrast, compared to the very high contrast just where the shadow begins. Thinking about this will make the forms read better.

Yeah man, hell of an improvement. I think the one thing I would say that I can see after taking a quick look at your book, is that your digital stuff looks very digital..Taking a more painterly approach might help you improve the appearance of the paints and also you understanding in general, like lighting colour, etc... Would be great to see the kind of improvement in your pencil stuff in your digital work!

Jens
March 5th, 2006, 01:35 PM
In those two last acrylics you're doing the highlights but fogetting your lights. You're putting the highlights above the shadow color. For example on the zombie tentacle guy, the difference between the brown and the black ink shadow in not enough, you need a color inbetween the highlights and the brown. Don't apply it in thin strokes like the highlights, but find the shape the light makes on top of the form.

That last one is one of your best!

Carnifex
March 5th, 2006, 02:38 PM

actually, i think its about star rating, reply count and nickname :D

you sure improved a lot in time, and you sure put a lot of effort in what you do.And that actually WORKS ;)

actually, some of these works look really cool, while other ones aren't actually worth posting (i'm talking about the enviro layout in post 149)...my suggestion is post less, draw more.Sit in front of your skeches, check them out, burn the ugly ones, burn half of the decent ones and keep working on the rest...i'm sure the ones that survive the process will be the best ones you've ever done.So just keep on posting, it's not about posting here, it's about drawing (i don't get all the bloody replies i'd like to recieve in MY sketchbook! :D)

keep on posting!

hey..
the first disadvantage in ur drawings is the line. your line suffers because it takes you more shots to find the right one. also, keep it fluid and cursive, use a smooth line, practice curves instead of small segments joined together..
also, try to develop some sort of personal rendering style and then start using some more bold lighting and shadows in ur works. see u around .. cheers.

I like the nymph from a ways back. Try putting some more angles into your drawings. The eye recognizes patterns in straight lines more easily than it does in curves. (one reason why you can still recognize objects in cubist paintings)

nice colors in the photoshop...
The blurriness is easily fixed by using hard-edged brushes for the edges...

I like the (life?) drawings from the 20th...the first one's shoulders a bit too narrow... but it reads really well.....

oh yeah.. and in the comic.. I think it was the thick forearms and hands that did it...

kinda, yeah. take a look at these life drawings from prostate sunrise and these few from fellah. - you'll see that a lot of their edges are made using relatively straight and concise lines, and your mind fills in the rest of the curves.

hey, dude! nice sketchbook you've got in here! Nice progress on your figure drawings. Concerning your digital paintings: As you have recognized yourself: All that stuff is waaaay to blurry! try to use more hard edged brushes and perhaps you could try some full-opacity brushes as well so that you can block in those values way more clearly. Maybe take a look at Tuchtens Sketchbook, he uses hard edged and full-opacity brushes a lot.
A few years ago when I used to play tennis, my trainer gave me an advice that you can use in nearly everything you do. Each time when I tended to play that ball into the net way too often he told me that I should try po bash it waaaaaaay behind the base-line. I tred that and tadaaaa, the ball landed exactly right into that damn field. Its the same with painting: If oyu edges are much to blurry, try to make the too hard, so that you can get a feeling to it.

Good luck mate :D

Your definetly showing progress. one thing id crit tho is that you seem to use alot of lines which often creates a messy effect. Id suggest that youd try to first sketch the basic forms lightly and then picking the forms/shapes you find fit with heavier/darker(dont forget light 'n shadow tho) lines.

Hopefully that made any sense :)

Good work + keep it up

didnt drop a line for ages!
you have some nice new stuff here. some of your pencil renderings are quite cool e.g http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b363/siansaar/24-1.jpg
i like that

i can only recommend sketching with a pen, most of your drawings still seem to be unsure, you keep repeating the lines instead of drawing the right line instantly... very difficult of course and i dont say im able to do so :)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b363/siansaar/17-3.jpg
thats what im talking about
but when i started to sketch with a pen it really changed my way of sketching. i did a lot of pen sketches.

Hey, Carnifex! You've gotten a lot better! Like Hurricane said, though... there are too many lines in some of your pieces... Or... the lines you put down don't read as shading, I think if you took some more time and let the lines follow the shape it'll help... some of your shading is a bit... chaotic... The chthulhu-piece (and a few others at the same level of finish) is looking good, though! It's very apparent that you've spent more time on 'em!

Good lookin' out!

Three words. DITCH THE LINEART.

clearly, you have a decent sense of color. You can tell where your light source is, and where the forms cast shadow. This being the case, stop using the lineart as a rule and more as a guideline. Paint OVER it, not under. This allows you a lot more freedom when defining the different shapes.

Your pencil craft has emerged a lot since post 1 and with the ink-studies you do, I guess you'll deal with those pretty well. Nice that you try out things like environments as well from time to time.

Interesting. All your people have very spindly, spirally limbs... reminds me a bit of insects. Dunno whether that's good or bad, just what I see. I'd suggest trying to work either simpler or more complex than you've been working, especially for that comic. You can take it several ways, but it looks like you're mostly undecided right now. I know that that's not real insight, but it's what I got. Go fig.

sup.

If anything really needs work in your sketchbook, it's that you tend to really throw off your balance. Use plumb lines and action lines to generate equilibrium.

I find that the hardest thing in the world is to draw action poses, because oftentimes they're UNbalanced and it's difficult to get them to look balanced anyway.

hey man - good sketchbook - my main trouble which i think you could improve on and would radically change your work, is your thickness of line, and how you are ursing line.

I noticed most of your work has a consitent line thickness and weight to it. And this can make the forms look very flat. Your figure work and actual content is great!!! Your really improving on that.

At the moment in places of highlight there are very thick shading lines - you really want to be going for much thiner and lighter lines here. and i think you will see a great improvement :) Also - really try and work back into the drawings with an eraser for the highlights :)

hope it helps :) keep up the good work(with thinner lines :P)

Some real trippy stuff here Carnifex! I like it, although I must inquire: why does there seem to be a reoccuring theme of people being devoured?

something good must have happened to you recently, there's definately some improvement going on.Stuff in post 223 and 224 is looking very good.I woudn't have coloured those lizard characters but (i would have just rendered them in pencil) but they look good.Nice to see some good studies and a better design sense.Keep on this way, its getting better and better ;)

I've watched all pages of your sketchbook. You have really good imagination. I especially like the dwarf with warhammer drawing.Try experimenting more with media. Maybe also do some drapery studies for shading practice.

Looking better Carni, but somehow I feel you rush things.
You should take a little more time on your work so that it looks a little less deconstructive and more solid.

Cheers pimpmeister.

thanx guys.
evil-you're absolutely right. as said,i'm currently not feeling so good, which leads to me disliking every pic i make halfway through and rushing through the other half.

yesterday i managed to draw a better one though. atleast i had fun enough to take time for it and ended up liking it. :)

Hey carnifex,

I like that first pic in your last post, but I see two things that could push it further: because of what's happening in the image, it would help to make the point of view from over the shoulders of the monsters, and if the woman is supposed to look totally defensive, her legs could be much closer together, trying to take up as little space as possible. Hmm, it would also be interesting for each monster to have very different expressions :)

thanx man (also for commencing page 5 here)
unfortunately I've been extremely unproductive the last few days. but on the other hand i met some old school mates of mine and we had a blast spending far too much money on drinks.
and while fighting a little hangover today i actually did something again. though,as i'm sure you can tell,i got bored (and rather unsatisfied) towards the end.:nohope:

hey there carnifex. i've been snooping around your SB for some time, but this is my first comment...

you're really showing some improvement. the sketch you posted yesterday has some great emotion and energy in the guy's face. you've got some great rendering in the face there; the nose is great and he really looks pissed about something.

you should consider doing some life studies of the way cloth folds and drapes. that will help you bring the clothing of your figure up to the same level as the head.

keep on truckin'!

hurri -i'm tryin workin on it :bashful:

ok,on to new stuff. the girl is a ref study from some catalogue, obviously rushed though. the hairdoes are from ref aswell (rushed aswell, just for testing purpose). second selfportrait is obviously in marker. did some more stuff of course, but i'm not gonna scan it because it looks awful (including some crappy anatomy studies).
thanx for lookin, thanx for c&c,and hope you like.:)
