Fascinating article. Great retrospective of images. Some work, some don't, but his reputation and success make his every stroke worthy of note.
Thank you for sharing this.

It does the heart good to see a modern artist making money on something other than grotesque installations or bizarre preformence pieces.
Perhaps the Avant guards strangle hold on the art world is beginning to slip.

I'm sorry, but I've seen better...why is he the richest?
I think all you gotta do is act a little crazy, tormented and boastful and you can fool anybody into thinking you're a genius. Intimidating people seems to be the key to success.
Lots of nipples and clevage equals good art, and money.....
I'd rather look at Syd Mead stuff......

Well- I think Avant garde should only be highly respected when you can use that skill with... Well, skill. When you do something differently to create crap, I say fuck you. If you can do something remotley interesting, then sure, I'll say you're Avant-Garde. Now why the heck did I just say that?

...this guy is a fucking idiot.
I don't hate him for making lots of money though, but I find it amusing that there are people out there who are willing to pay rediculous amounts for relatively low technical skill.

Because he thinks he's on par with Ruebens, Leonardo DaVinci, Rembrandt and is the last in line of the great artists and he has no next of kin...

Hmm, weird. I like some of his pieces, and I don't like some others. On balance, from my viewpoint, I'd say his works are fairly average.
I find it odd that in 40 years of drawing and painting, he doesn't seem to have improved at all.

No one has really mentioned that perhaps it's not so much the quality [which I personally don't hold in the highest regard, but it isn't the absolute pits, either], rather something else that is responsible for all his money. I think it has more to do with the quantity of work he manages to produce that is what stuffs his accounts full. And given that he does, in fact, have some 'street cred' as far as his schooling goes, tricking the Saudi’s into spending too much on something like this is a reasonable feat [His individual peices go from 25k to a million or so.] I think it's a much more of a right person at the right place at the right time sort of situation. Anyone else wouldn't have the [however falsely attributed] 'star appeal,' the sheer magnitude of product, or that sort of audience with so much excess money to exploit [oil money to be sure, so it's poetic in some way = he's selling the saudi's back their oil and in not too much better of a shape than they last had it.]
Regardless, he still sounds like a prick, and that last tidbit of information given his off time activities made it all worth while. He's by my account and for whatever reasons, a sad man at the end.

Yeah. I need to start selling my paintings to Saudi princes.
I'll be in the seat next to you on the plane ride over. I went to a painting workshop once and the teacher (Frank Covino) said, "if you want to be rich, paint for the rich." :} It doesn't get much richer than Arabian princes.

http://www.bwwsociety.org/images/vicari/lavigonade.jpg Drawing the subject matter and on the level of 16 year old girls. I used to draw things not unlike this when I was 12. And some people call concept art cliche! Some of his stuff isn't bad, but I'd rather be looking at any piece of art produced by a CA artist than this.

Same cast of characters: griping about the success of someone else.
Well, folks, i looked at this guy's site and I found many of his paintings gorgeous. His colors and the dynamic look of his style was amazing. Again, art is not about the rating of absolute technical skill you have. It's about how you move your viewers, how you tickle their imaginations. I saved back this guy's paintings and I will closely study how he achieved his effects: the color choices, the value comparisions and juxtapositions. This guy is excellent. Funny, every time I drop in this place I see the same smarmy group whining. Same people even.
I don't know how you all have been entertaining yourselves but I have been enjoying every millisecond and millimeter of New York City. What a delightful town. Chelsea is an art overload. There are sections of town where you can't even catch your breath from the number of galleries. Although I live on the West side within a few blocks of Central Park, I am looking into buying an apartment in Chelsea. That Elvis Costello song was wrong: I DO want to live in Chelsea.
My advice to you all? Η τοποθέτηση δεν είναι μια δικαιολογία για την πρωτοτυπία.
Regards,
F.

Is it really about art or how you socialize and make contacts?
Merit don't seem to make a difference.
People seem to be picking on Thomas Kinkade and Rob Liefeld, but somebody liked their stuff. Life ain't fair I tell ya.
