Well, so I figured out I would like to start a sketchbook.

First a little information about me, I currently live in Houston (I'm from Norway) and are attending high school here.

My goals for this sketch book are developing my art and at least try to start to figure out my own style. I don't have a lot of time between school and friends :[ , but i will at least draw each day and make updates here two times a week or more.

Well, enough scnitt-scnatt, here are some of my old drawings, new ones will come later.

Do anyone know about a good color pencil tutorial? I have some pencils and I would like to just get a little introduction into the medium. :confident

Okey, I blew the update twice a week pretty fast. School and homework and that sort of things take a lot of time. I when i have the option of drawing for 20 minutes or scan a drawing and post it, I draw.
But finally some more sketches.

Again just some studies.

School takes a lot of time, and my lazyness for scanning my drawings keeps on going. My sketchbook do not fit my scanner in one scan, so i have to do it twice. This of course makes the scanning time twice as long.

Here is some recent gestures and figure drawings, and a little concept of a muslim wizard warrior.

But here is something new. Studied a bit body anatomy and tried it out.
It is really helpfull i must say. The thing everyone says about study antomy really pays off.

Looking good.. two quick crits: one, the arm looks a little short, it doesn't seem to be drawn back far enough to warrant that much foreshortening. Two, I think it'd add a lot to the piece if you were to emphasize the weapon and shield some more, both by size and detail. Here are two quick references off of google:

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I when i flip the image in photoshop I see what you are talkng about. Need to rise the shoulder part a little. If I have one tip to everyone it would be to look at their drawing in a mirror.

I'll try to fix the arm and not screw up the drawing completely.

As for the ref, thanks again, but I'm going for someting more historaical correct.

I'm not very good at this critquing thing, but I guess that's what this place is all about.

maybe try to use less busy broken lines and place them where you think they'll be more effective. You already know to keep studying anatomy so.....

Heya Njord. I dig the assembly line image, some nice perspective and a considerably gloomy atmosphere, I like it.
The legs on the leaping guy look a bit close together, like he's posing instead of lunging at someone, but I like his motion :)

I have a bunch of studies, 15-20 min anatomy everyday. I keep them in a seperate skechbook, and I don't see that much use for pages upon pages with them here in my skechbook. I might scan some someday, but there is other work I consider more important to show. The perspective drwaing is made with the messiest stuff ever. It's called graphite powder and it covered my whole desk by the end of the drawing.

Here is some more for your enjoyment.

nice control on the wet media, i always found those the hardest (is the black one ink?). I like the overlapping fingerprinty effects, very cool touch. Keep experimenting with the head from different angles and you're looking good!

Apocolypse Rex inspired me to mace some motion studies of the human body.
I have also added some charcoal life drawings and some other stuff. I think i will take a study week now. I need to build up my visual vocabulary.

And what is all the prejuce against wet media.
The fun with watercolor is that it is so expressive!

It is black ink iolarnula, and the worst kind, acrylic ink, messiest stuff ever.

henks for the comments. Yes, invincible wombat, I used a lot of time on it. The hover thingy I think i used 20 hours on. I posted these for you, just ask me if you have any questions. I'm not very good at 3D but i know some.

That is also the reason why i stopped with 3D. There were to many parameters and that sort of stuff. It took to much time and i ended up drawing more insted.
Sure it makes the perspective for you, but I felt it became to artificial working with it.

Here is todays sketches. And one word of advice; never buy Revees oil pastels, they suck. I did and I was really dissapointed.

bit of a touch small head on that last fella, but I like the tonal composition of the one above. Not too sure about the curved lines on the scrapers, they dont look precise enough to be fish-eye lens type goings-on, so im not quite 100% sure whats happening there, but overall I like that one a good bit. top stuff, and with the oil pastels as well, difficult buggers they are. :D

keep at it!

I was told by one of my teachers to never let oil pastels near anything that would go in a portfolio as a general rule, I guess because they're so goddamn tricky. I'm wondering whether a different colour media would be better for you at your stage - perhaps acrylics?
You're obviously thinking about musclature to a degree in that last pencil piece, proportions are your biggest problem at the moment though. Like Rex said the head is too small, and also the torso is very long. It almost looks to me like you've drawn in the long tunic first and then added the legs underneath and in doing so you've considered the end of the tunic to be closer to the waistline than the waist really is. What I mean is that you should construct your figures with simple shapes and get the proportions right before you go in for details or even clothing.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I did construct a body underneath and added the clothing later. I have been studying anatomy lately and I think the problem lays in all the information. Im trying to add in every muscle without really considering its position.
I have tried out some diffrent methods for body construction.
I guess I just have to go back to the old "head mesurment" and blocks and spheres. The result is better then apperently.

As for the oil pastels, I like them so i will just stick to it. It is just practise.

those 10 min sketches are looking great, only thing toreally watch as was mentioned by cordy is that some of the figures look like they're off ballence and about to fall over, your sketches don't really look like you do an underdrawing underneath and some simple stick figures as kind of a skeletal system that you can erase later may help you out with that.

Hi there.
I like the colors used and the overall feel of the watercolor, but I have a few issues: first: the neck and hat of the guy on the right is a bit flat. And second: I don't see what the white area on the right shoulder of the guy in the middle is (around the cigarette).

I also have the problem that I start to shade too soon, and not look at proportions first. But hey, just keep going and it will be allright....

Cheers,
Arco

invinciblewombat
April 7th, 2006, 01:40 PM
as far as the watercolor goes it looks a bit flat becasue the shading on the faces and the background is very subtle. If you want more hard edges in your watercolor it may help if you use the variety that comes in a tube, it works almost just like goache and is good for mixing colors and gettting some contrast. The portrait on the toned paper is looking nice although some more emphasis on hilights wouldn't hurt it. the armor studies are coming along very nicley as well, they look very solid and have a good sense of how they wouold sit on the body.

Njord thx for your post earlier, i appreciate it.

I can see your studying your dynamics to get the lifely vibe into your action sequences too.

Thing is though, some of the sequences dont looked balanced out enough.
I don't know how to explain this properly, but what i found out when something is moving, it has a certain smooth flow to it, like a fish has in water or like a earoplain's wing has cutting through air.

Anyway what i would suggest is, practice using some general flow lines before starting to draw. So you create some guide that indicates what kind of action and in what gravity is going to take place, then use them lines to draw your figures matching the flow.

prolly doesnt make much sence, but hey, good luck:)

I feel as tho your pencil is to soft, and i beleave for a softer pencil range you should specialise in large sized pictures. I think you could push out the detail with a harder and sharper pencil, for example: the soldier, the collor, i would add some stiches into the clothing design and on the shoulder where the thing is soed together, maybe a putton, the pullet-belts i would of spend more time with that since that is one of the main things that jump into eye, more definition on the hands, are they muddy, have they got bruises fomr crawling in the mudd, the mask i definitely add detail on the design, since you can get real-life references on the net with ease, i could go on and on and on and on...

what im saying is detail builds a picture, the more detail the more it will have to say, and when something is told people will listen ...in our case, they will look

@Cordy: Thanks, man. Yep i know. The thing is i often focus in the heads and suordinate the body during realy quick gestures. When i dont mark aything up in the beginning it often turns out that way. Need ore practice though.

@invinciblewombat: Thanks, its actually inkwash. THen i went over it with a waterfast pen.

Here is the font file if anyone is interested in trying it. It' just basic letters. No special characters. I suppose it could be used for a comic.

Here is my secound try at making a poster. I like this one better than the first atempt.

invinciblewombat
October 18th, 2006, 05:16 PM
this poster is much more interesting compositionally and looks a lot more graphic-design-ey. the scribbles behind the figure in the foreground are distracting though, i think that the fact that she is a differnt color than the background is enough to draw attention and they are unnecessary

@hurricane: Thanks man, that is really encuraging.
@invisiblewombat: Thanks for the comment. Ive posted my new design now. See if you like that better.

Some more stuff from the last couple of days. I havn't been making a lot of sketches. I've been busy making a website and finishing up the TeenChallange and the poster. Here is the lates though. I did a remake of the property poster and fixed the one with the girl.

the new poster is looking much better, especially from a distance, your figures are coming long nicley but it seems like you're afraid to show much of their fingers, that gets a bit distracting especially in the smoking picture.

@...Invinsible: Point taken. I have done a few hand studies now.

Fist one is a little illustration for the poem "Red" by Ted Hughes.
Rest is hand, person and enviroment gestures. Hope they please you...

PS. Check out my new website if you have time. It is Simplified (http://simplified.awardspace.com). Also if you could give a crit on the design that would be nice.

invinciblewombat

the studies are looking good, one thing on your website all the links in the link section are leading to http://awardspace.com/partners.html from your site becasue they have "http://awardspace.com/partners.html" in front of the site where they're meant to go in the html code. other than that I like how clean and straightforward it is, a lot of times people go crazy with ther websites and make them way too complicated.

Step 1: Get some bamboo. You can buy it, find it, steal it from old ladies or as in my case get it from someone’s garden. It should be about the thickness of you pinkie.

Step 2: Get a knife and make a 35 degree cut on the bamboo. Remember the scout proverb; always cut away from yourself. I don’t really want anyone to end up with 9 and a half finger.

Step 3: Cut away a little bit of wood on the sides to form it into a proper nib shape. Also reduce the sharp point of the nib to a flat end with a width of 2-3 mm.

Step 4: Flick of a little bit of wood from the underside of pen. This should be some white hairy stuff. This is to avoid the ink soaking up the pen.

Step 5: Make one grove with the point of you knife on the top side of the pen. This should not go through the wood. Do the same on the underside. This is to make the ink flow downwards.

Congrats, you just made your own pen! Now you just have to cut it into proper length.
I personally like around 15 cm.

hey, the stuff on the last sketchbook page is looking good, the lighting in the bar in particular. It seems like a lot of your characters have short and wide/stumpy porportions, especially in the arms. It's something to fool around with.

Heh. I Like your environment shot of the robot factory, its strong. As for your drawings in general, they have a washy feel to them, which means there have know real contrast-line firmly gesturing the shape of the object reflecting the light. Except your black and white drawings, they do, but those lines appear to be wobbly which takes it back to the washy look, abit. Sorry.

Yes it is. Your right. Besides you are one of the few that actually improves their ability, this clearly is shown from the first page to only your third. Something you can be proud of, and it should help you to become even better in the next drawings to come.

@ Prothet: Im getting a wacom for christmas. I do enjoy tradizional though.

And finally after 2 moths, i get an internet connection. My family had to bribe one of the service guys with 20 euros and a bottle of wine, but finally we are on the web. Spain is a very relaxed country indeed.

Here is some of the work i have done the last two months. Some different work sketches made with the homemade bamboo pen, i love that thing by now, it has such a special mark. Some sketches for the Stylized Animal Challange. There are also some photographs of some garbage animals i have made. Ive been collecting junk around my house and glued it togheter.

Enjoy, hopefully.

good to see you're updating in here again, the garbage animals are very cool, the last one reminds me a lot of an article i saw somewhere about how scientists are attaching computers to insects nervous systems, all the photos were sort of cyborg bugs. looking forward to what you produce with the wacom.

Thanks Wombat, i was really unsure how they would turn out. Im trying a little bit of graphic design now. I need to improve my placment of objects and text togheter.

This is my teen challange and stylized octopus challange pieces. I had fun making these and the octopus one is inspired by a childrens book. In this book mice transform one of their own with a intricate pattern of flowers to a tiger mouse. Fun stuff.

that last bunch came out really great both in the rendering and the compositions, you've got a really good range of shades in the renders and the poses are all very dynamic and believable, only nit pick is to keep an eye on the perspective in the second to last one, some of the buildings seem a bit off.

Hey Njord, dropping by to say hello. :) Going through this SB, lots of good stuff going on and a nice variety of subjects. I really like your watercolor work, the animal studies, and especially the recent octopus piece. The sketches from life are the way to go..That recent set of concepts are nice as well, really dug the one with the lady on the roof and the dancer. Your sculptures as well are really creative, making stuff out of junk is fun as hell. Keep it up!

Very nice sb. Some pictures are exceptionally good, there is few cheesy ones as well ( that deer and landscapes) but overall it's all good quality stuff. Very inspiring. And such a great ideas! I love the idealogy behind almost every picture! Proves you have brains mate.

It strikes me that your style is quite similiar to mine... When I looked at some of the sketches I thought they were something I will do some day but haven't done yet and also maybe- 'me' in some parallel universe is drawing them right now...They just got transferred here to your head by the sudden twist of fate...
But I can't complain, I still have more my own ideas than time hehe:)

Cool water colour sketches, love the character designs and ideas. All though, I think you could draw from some more reference pics of the human body, to help you get more gravity in your anatomy, seems abit washy atm.

Over all cool progress, keep it coming.

Mighty fine sb you have going here.

Firstly I'd like to thank you for approving the fusion of our ssg's, I look forward to watching you develop further as an artist.

You have a lot variety of medium. Those scrap critters! What fun! I think its great the way you make them and then draw them. That takes an imaginative mind. I wouldn't have thought of that.

I'll be seeing you around.
