View Full Version : ¡¡ Dsg Comes To End !! ... (OR MAYBE NOT.)

Hey all,

Now that the WEEKLY CONCEPT DESIGN (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74) forum is at full sail, we're ending the DSG.

It's been great participating (sporadically ;)) and moderating in this forum, but it's time to switch things around. For the moment at least, the Daily Sketch Group is caput.

Thanks to all who have participated -- it's been fun!

The WEEKLY CONCEPT DESIGN (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74) forum should definitely satisfy your conceptlust:

Whatever your design preference... INDUSTRIAL, CREATURE, ENVIRONMENTAL, or CHARACTER... You always have a topic available to you!

:yayca:

( I'll provide another week's worth of DSG topics, just so people have some time to notice this posting )

I would beg that when you shut down the DSG you save all the threads, so the DSG can still be a place of ideas and inspiration even after it's gone.

Well that's a huge bummer :(

I'll be very sad to see the end of the DSG. It was a lot of fun participating and seeing the many interpretations of ideas. I'll miss Hamsta's funny descriptions and some of the fantastic daily art that came out of the DSG.

Thanks very much for your great topics and for leading the DSG for the past while - it was fun while it lasted!

I don't want the end of that part of forum. It was my favourite one. I like daily visits here.
I hope that all of you will be posting your works on forum, at weekly part.

How about running on until we hit 1000 and have the DSG go out with a BANG! ? Aw, sad to see it go. Let's have a closer look at the weeklies, then.

Cant say as I like this idea very much. The DSG and the x.O.Ws are very different activities.

Dsg is a no pressure creative outlet for those who often have to budget their time.

The O.Ws are COMPETIONS where works are expected to be brought to a high level of finnish before presentation.

I see no benefit and some potential harm in lumping both groups of people into the later activity.

DSG was a wonderful activity, and personally I think that it offers something different than the Weekly Activities, one for completed works and another for sketches. Hopefully, the new activities will fill the gap. but it is still sad. Thank you for having provided it at all.

Here here, I agree. Can someone carry on the torch of the DSG? I don't want it to fade into obscurity... it is very different from the weekly activities.

Can nothing be done?

I would beg that when you shut down the DSG you save all the threads, so the DSG can still be a place of ideas and inspiration even after it's gone.

We can make a website with all the pieces submitted. I already had this idea a time ago for the COW's (If I remember correctly) but we didn't do something with it. Maybe we can do it with the DSG?

Anyway, I like the COW's etc a lot, but the DSG is special! For example, I don't like this weeks cow, then I can't/won't participate a complete week. (Please note I'm talking for others, because I don't participate much at all! I just look at them a lot.) The daily sketches are much easier to participate in, because it is a SKETCH. With the COW's etc you have to submit something finished.. I think it is completely different.

Why exactly can't we have them both?

Sunny

The DSG has helped me in my skill level as an artist I must say. It has been quite helpful to me and I am thankful for it. But I think this weekly project is sweet! it gives you a week to come up with something kickass instead of something you can only make in af ew short hours.

I think the DSG helped in getting peopel to sketch more but you all should start spending some time crafting your painting abilities and trying different techniques while coming up with complete projects.

Its a bit sad to see these come to an end, but the weeklies sound like a great oppertunity to create a more refined piece.

I thought it might be interesting to go back and look at one of my first DSGs way back when: http://www.members.tripod.com/carlbeu/61380f40.jpg

and heres 1 just recently (around 900ish, I dont label them anymore):
http://studentpages.scad.edu/~carbeu20/familyweb2.jpg

its funny, I started out doing DSGs when I was still in highschool, and its been interesting to see my style mature and evolve.. I still have a ways to go but I know that doing the DSG's has helped me expand my drawing vocabulary and challenged me to try new things. It also got me excited about drawing in a way I never had before.

Id like to personally thank Davi, the DSG bot, William and everyone else whos played a part in keeping this going! Also a shout out to all the fantastic artists who have posted on these over the years (sparth,sonja9,HPX, ect....) to help inspire us to see the idea in a whole new way.

so yeah, its been a blast!... see you in the weeklies!

Hello all,

I am fairly new here, only posted once, but have kind of 'silently' participated in the background, basically used the dsg as a place to spark the daily fire...Anyhoo.. I see the value/ necessity for something like this for me and others, so If enough of you are intersested... I would be more than happy to start something up, it would obviously be a different domain, but I could have something up and ready by this weekend to start on monday if enough of you are interested.

Drop me a line if this sounds like something you would be interested in..

I will continue to try and particpate in the weekly's, but I need the daily spark.

Thanks.

wow. yeah this is a shocker. i've not been round to the weekly gallery yet, but from what i see it's devoted more to the finished type of drawing than too the daily type of loose sketch idea type drawing.

a shame! i agree with the rest of whats been said, why is there no room for both? if it's a board-structure issue, can't you just slide th dsg into the weekly section as a kind of more relaxed aria for the daily sketchers and let the reast of the board be for the more serious?

well, i suppose weekly it will have to be, but nothing can replace the DSG. it really kicked me to know i had only 24 hours to do the thing, freed up my thought process.

it shall be missed. i still wonder why though. what's wrong with it as is?

Well, damn. This is disheartening.

The DSG is where I cut my teeth here on CA. I don't really want to see it end, and personally think that it does serve a purpose that the Weeklies don't offer. Not everyone has the interest in doing something that takes a week and is voted on. Sometimes just being able to take an open topic and crank a cool sketch out is it's own reward. I really fear that we, as a community, will seriously lose out if this does indeed take place.

I'd ask that you rethink your position and keep the DSG going. It's popularity is such that both CGTalk and (I believe) wetcanvas have their own versions of it as well - but the first, to the best of my knowelge, was here.

Please do not shut this institution down. It too good to let fall by the way side, and far too many people support it.

Though I think I only posted about once or twice in the DSG section, I visit it on a pretty regular basis. The topics are fun, and I like a lot of what is usually submitted. I think I can understand why there is plans for this activity to come to an end, since the weekly ones are fully active, but I also think it it also sucks...

If this is comming to an end, there are two people I want to say something about:

sonja9: I have no idea what happened to him. But he entered this activity guns blazing, did a lot of insanely awesome stuff and went out just like he entered. His sketches were absolutely amazing and inspirational, and the fact that he did them in an hour more or less.
I remember he was asked about his procedure once, and he answered something like "I dunno... I just do what I think works best fot the image". At another time, he was asked to post in other sections, to which he replied something like "I'm not really interested in posting in other sections, I just enjoy a daily sketch to loosen up". He then put on a site just to show his DSG's and his procedure for doing them. Fucking awesome.
Those freakin phrases are burned into my brain. I cannot tell you just how inspirational I think this person is, he is definatly on the level of the pro's here on the site and on the main page, its too bad not more people took notice. Wish he showed up again...

hamsta: on every DSG I've ever clicked, I think I saw your name and entry, and story to go with it. You've been doing this for a really long time I think... years... and some recent time ago, I think the topic was "Green" and I remember you saying it was your 1000th DSG. Congratulations on reaching 1000 and surpasing it. You've been at this for a freaking long time, never quiting. Thats tough, and something to recognize.

Same case for Hideyoshi and Goran, I love your entries, and I don't know how long you guys have been at this but I remember stuff by you from a pretty long time now.
And the same for a lot of DSG regulars, whose nicks I can't remember : S but you know who you are. Congratulations to you guys too.

Cheers for William, davi, and the dsg bot : ) and anyone else who was involved in running this activity.

And to every DSGer, regulars and non-regulars, Cheers!!

Cheers to William for the daily commitment of running this show.

But as a one-time participant of DSG, its a bummer to see it die! I think Conceptart was the pioneer in this whole daily sketch idea? Other sites just sort of followed suit, it would be such a shame to kill the original.

Drawing everyday is beneficial and a damn powerful tool for improvement. Having the DSG there is tremendous motivation.

Why don't we go back to the good ole' DSG BOT? Just feed him topics every month or so like we used to. The topic suggestion thread has a plethora of ideas we can mine from. Simpler topics from time to time (as opposed to the full sentenced topics) may also add to the fun and no-pressure vibe this activity is supposed to have.

Give DSG a chance! Breath life into the BOT! :yayca:

Yeaaaaah! Sweetness, alien colliseum or something.

I understand how much of a pain it must have been for you William, I think we need a few people to run it so no-one will take too much of a burden.

Taking it to a new forum is a bad idea and I don't think we could have just one thread for all these (i.e. the coloring book).

Yeah well, keep it open, I'll help out if I'm needed.

The DSG seems to have undergone something of a revival since William has been at the reigns following the DSG bot's untimely retirement. Much respect to you for that, Mr. Hand.

Like some others who have posted here, the DSG was the forum that attracted me to CA.org in the first place, and where I made my first art posts. I had a lot of fun with this activity for well over a year and although I've not been here for a long while, I'll be sad to see it end.

For those that don't know, there's an active and well moderated DSG over at CGSociety.com. The vibe is different, but it's somewhere to get your daily sketch fix if the doors here do close.

But I wouldn't wanna take away the glory that William B. Hand provided, if he decides he can no longer keep it up, I might step up but I might want to slightly change things up.

If people would still want this section to be run, and there is no one else to do it someone let me know and I'll see if I'm capable.

It would give me some motivation to sketch something every day, and to try and motivate others.

Mike C -

Mike, I think that would be fantastic. I know Mr. Hand has put in a lot of work on this, but I can't think of anyone more suited to take the reins, should he decide to retire, than yourself.

That said, it's a huge commitment, and total respect to William b. Hand for doing such a fantastic job with this.

Something else that I'm thinking about, and would have to speak to a couple of others about, is folding the DSG into the Community Activities forum that we have weeklies in, which would raise it's profile some. It pains me to see it stuck out here like an unwanted step child... :[

If I were to run this, that would be my #1 change made. It would only become succesful if were moved to where all the weekly activities are. This would suffice the appotite for those who like to spend an hour or two at most sketching a new topic every day - over spending a whole week on a topic and waiting days before they can work on the next COW, or EOW.

There are a lot of people out there who get bored of topics quickly and a daily activity is definately needed. This is also where I got my start off when I first visited conceptart.org, partcipating in the dsg's here and there and it helped me out a lot.

That's really my thought on this as well, and why I'm so against it being shut down. I do think it absolutely needs to be moved (need to speak to Form about this, I think...) to where it's more accessible. Regardless, right now we have a redundency we need to address: we have "Activities" where the Weeklies are currently located, and then we have "Activities & Dailies", the soul occupant being the DSG. It just makes sense to me to bring it into the fold with the Weeklies since it is a related activity.

First off, many thanks to Mr. Hand for keeping the thread going. It's understandable that something like this takes a considerable administration factor and it's a big responsibility to keep it going.

The weekly sketch groups are an excellent idea, but a loss of the DSG would be a big detriment to the CA site. In terms of traffic, it's in the top six for postings (in the top third overall for CA) and it's probably one of the key ways CA is attracting new contributors. Hopefully this site will never adopt the model, but after visiting CA daily for the last 5 months (lurking mostly), I would consider paying real money for access and the DSG is one of the primary reasons.

If there's no way to get a resolution, could thread be kept open? Those of us who are more recent could still recycle the subjects, or maybe setup a way to contribute/vote on a daily subject for the next day and keep it going that way.

If worse comes to worse, here's another site that has a DSG for those of you who start to experience withdrawls... CA's DSG is/was better in my opinion (for ideas and contributions):

I have not participated in the DSG for over a year now, due to personal conflicts (3 kids and a full-time graphics job). But I loved it and still check it out whenever I can. The DSG is the reason I joined CA due mostly to the works that Davi, Mike C., Matt Dixon, and Oregano, etc. were pushing out. It was a fun way to practice and keep fluid while having fun.

I started out slow on that, but it made me want to draw more and brought me out of a 5-year drawing slump and I think has given my drawing skills the boost they needed to make me finally have some confidence with them (even though I have a long way to go with my goals).

I think that if someone didn't want to run it, even though a few of you have stepped up to the plate already, if the DSG Bot was ressurrected, then it would be self-running and wouldn't need to be taken out.

If the DSG goes, I would be sad and I see why, but still sad...

Okay..

At least for the moment, DSG will continue.

However, it's gonna be on something akin to probation...

Something that's been a real problem is people posting things that are of an inappropriately low quality. Sometimes it's because they only spent 15 minutes on it, and sometimes it's just because of under-developed skills.

Regardless, this is not meant to be a forum for thoughtless doodles or for beginner artists who are trying to learn how to draw. I have nothing against thoughtless doodling or beginner artists - I have been both - but this is not the place for either.

I do agree with what people have said about the DSG having benefits that the Weeklies section doesn't, and I would like to see it continue... But it cannot continue in the same "anything goes" way.

As distasteful a chore as this is gonna be, I will be editing some IMG postings into url links, effective immediately.

I'm not happy with the notion, and will explore other possible approaches, but for now that's what's gonna happen. My apologies to any who are offended by the IMG-to-LINK switching, but I just haven't come up with a better solution.

Well, I may abandon the img-to-link thing.

...That is, if I can come up with some alternate "picks of the week" thread or some other stop-gap measure.

Can't think about that tonight, though.

I'm trying to save the DSG from oblivion, but it has to change.

I , personally, do not think you should abandon that. Not everyone might be happy with it, but if you try to make everyone happy, noone will be. But you might only want to sent a message/reason to the folks that have been 'changed' (or maybe you are already doing that ) ....
2 reasons in favor :
1) You give a clear message to the poster of the image
2) They are not removed (although not immediatly visible).

It might actually be motivating for the people, to know that at a certain point (when they are not 'transformed' anymore ) they are 'accepted' at CA .

Owke...the rantings of a complete N00b on CA (lurking for several months though) ... but just my 2 cents...

I agree with everyone; I think the DSG forum should stay. Even when there are only a few posts, I know myself (and buddies of mine) go there daily to grab the topic, do their own, and check out what has been posted. What's the big deal with getting a bot with a zillion topics and automating it? That's the power of the internet...I think it should stay stay stay! And besides, my bday is tomorrow (Nov 7), this isn't what I want for my bday!! I'm with Hamsta. ;)
