Normally, on beautiful day like today, the arena sections would be open to the sea so that the crowds could gather and watch the yacht races. But today was something new. A new being, from the outer rim, man I believe they are called, are racing beasts. Sometype of beast of burden. Magnificant as if carved from stone. Fast as the wind and as if they made thunder themsleves as the force their way around the stadium. What kind of being would sit astride something like this?

The recently completed pavillion was wrecked by the storm, despite its 'weatherproof' design by city engineers, local resident Mr. Sandford today spoke of local people's oppostion to the island scheme, "we toll'em t'weren't no good t'build on't south side.. tis t'wind see". Officials declined to comment.

Decided to go a little more fantastical with it.
Yes, those are giant serpents, unfortumately I feel it's too scattered and and dark.
Well, you live and learn...and cry.

CLOSE TO REJECTION

This round, broken spirit was close to rejection. You have no concept, and it says you left it at a wip stage. This will be the last round this will slide through.

Also, darkwolfb87 you came close to rejection also. It really only looks like a sketch... i hope we see you again next round, prove yourself!

Had to vote for Koshime. Great job, love the style, mood, and design. The runners up would be artkitty(nice colors) and bumskee(nice textures).

For me it was a close thing between bumskee and Sinix..

I went with Bumskee because the place he painted looks crisp, bright and clean, with soft comfortable lines and a lush green healthy environment. Just seems like a welcoming place to go chill out for awhile, and spend tons of money. :)

Sinix was a very close second for many of the same reasons. However the festive streamers in Sinix's seemed a bit out of place for that type of swank looking resort (at least for a daytime shot), and outside of the resort itself it seemed a bit rocky and barren, although it does feel almost like if you panned the camera to the left you would be looking at a jungle. :)

Everyone did a great job, but those stood out for me (artkitty and Koshime wow!)

Love your final version koshime!! <3 had to vote for yours

artkitty: excellent mood, i like the gentle shapes and colors

pootle: nice scene, but looks kinda unfinished, could turn out great!

bumskee: nice technique, textures, colors, but the whole image is a bit boring, maybe because of the compostition

davi: a straight horizon would help here i think :), the man in the front looks a bit wonky

cool work i hope to participate for the next one... not only giving lame crits :P

My favourites were:
bumskee: took me right back to childhood seaside holidays.
sinix: impression of quality of light/high reflectances and great rocks(!).
artkitty: detail and light

I went for bumskee on the vote.

I voted for Artkitty because it looks really idillic (can you use it like that in english?). It looks like it could be in a children's book, really well done!

Pootle.
Just beautiful and moody colors, simple yet powerful.

I voted for Sinix - love the fresh feeling colours. The composition bothers me a little though, as there is nothing for the eye to arrive at on the right hand side - it would have been better to split the comp up into 3 vertical sections and then have the structure resting on the third so the viewer travels through the scene and arrives at the point of interest.

Koshime - very nice colours and design

Hideyoshi - nice colours and reflections but again I feel the point of interest could have been placed better.

Sinix's Colors won me over.

IMO, the way to win this Challenge is going to be all aobut mood. Koshime's seemed so chaotic and less like entertainment and more like war. If he had used blues and whites and things, I definatley would have voted for him- But Sinix's concept as well as colors won me over. Good job to all!

EDIT: And art kitty- I loved yours. If this was a seaside Town then I would have picked you- But it doesnt seem very pavilionesque IMHO. Great style and mood!

EDIT2: Bumskee- Yours is miraculous as well. It would ahve been really close if you had lightened up the sky. The deep blue of it intimidates me, while I always thought of the sky as being open, it seems to block my way. Good concept though!

Sinix seemed to make it work for me. The atmosphere mostly. I likely the very painterly looking rocks and stuff. I felt the building was suppose be seeming large, but the scale of the people throws that off, at least to me. Overall I liked it most.

I like the anbiance of ArtKitty. Light, airy. that kind of thing.

Hideyoshi was very detailed, but a little dark for me.

and I agree with the comment that Koshime's was done well, but more war like than anything else.

Nice going all. On the next.

Ooh, some nice entries this time too!
Thanks for the comments on mine :3

a few thoughts on some of these:

davi - nice colors, I dig the loose painterly style, could stand some cleanup around edges of foreground elements though. Add more hard edges on the non-organic stuff. Also the criss-cross jet trails in the sky grab too much attention.

pootle - nice sky! I'd like to see more light and color from that in the water & on the structure's silhouette. Composition is unbalanced since the contrast & detail on the left grab more attention than the dark cloud on right. Feels like I'm missing the left half of the image!

Hideyoshi - nice use of limited color. The interior looks bright and festive, but the outside just isn't tacky enough for an asian theme park! ;3
The structures and lights in the foreground are the same scale as the building and bg elements- adding figures there really throws off the depth, too. Fix the foreground and this is a good portfolio piece.

bumskee - great texture, love the painty technique. Color palette feels too frigid to me- more like Maine than tropical beaches. Also the horizon line is right in the middle, really dividing the canvas. I like the sky area since it enhances the scale of the structure, maybe crop/compress the bottom some.

koshime - really cool structure designs! Also like the palette better than your usual enviroment stuff. Maybe too many colors muddying it up, though- play around with the hue and color balance in PS. Perspective is inconsistant, distort some elements to match a grid. The design and color feels more industrial than festive, to me.

sinix - nice design, I like the color in the organics. Not so keen on the colors you picked for the hanging lantern-thingies. Feels a bit left heavy compositionally, maybe you could compensate by angling more rocks and structure to the right, around the building. I like how the rocks in the ocean lead the eye back around. Could use more color in the building itself, it's bright but sterile. How about some more saturated reflected light from the sea?

Overall a nice set of concepts. Hope to see ya'll in round 3!

"more like Maine than tropical beaches"

That's exactly it. That's the perfect way to describe what I was trying to say!

Wish I have two votes. So hard to decide between artkitty's and sinix's entries.

Artikitty's so harmonic and peaceful, while sinix's has this waste land feeling to it.

I think I'll cast my vote on sinix.

Koshime - for awsome color job.
Artkitty - i just love cute design.. but i might enjoy even more if the concept had more depth. I like to discover things in a picture, especially in a n envir.
funny how we don't see the mechanics of the entertainment in almost none of the entries.

No forced perspective either.
Colors ussualy too saturated.
Damn... in few weeks i will be able to join you hopefully. Then.. you crit the hell out of my piece :)

I voted for Sinix, I really liked Hideyoshi's, Koshime's ArtKitty's and Bumskee's entries as well.

Form, sorry, I couldn't make it in time : S
That's why its unfinished and with no description... actually I thought it wouldn't go to the poll. I really appreciate that it did, but I agree that for future entries, images should be finalized and presented as such, so don't hesitate on letting the hammer drop if I screw it up again ; P

I actually liked the raw paints which allowed for better suggestion of form and lighting of Sinix's entree and hence choose it.

Artkitty's was a close second, however, it has a great stylised manga/game art feel. Perhaps the background mountains are a little flat (heck who am I to crit, I havent got my colour theory right yet :)

voted Sinix, reminds me of some famous illustrator who does lots of spaceships and stuff.

Artkitty was a very close second.
