hey, I was wondering if there are any schools that are considered "amazing colleges of art", or anything of that fashion in australia?

Sadly no... Monash Uni does a pretty solid fine arts/creative arts BA, the ANU has a very good fine art degree but they steer you more towards arty fartyness as opposed to hard skills. RMIT has the best Industrial Design and Architecture degrees in the southern Aus. But there are no exclusively awesome Art uni's around :(

I concur with Ruzkin. I can only speak for my observations of the ANU visual arts school (Where one of my relatives was teaching glasswork) but the general gist of the curriculum appeared geared away from developing a specific skill set and towards fostering style (or arty farty :D ). As ANU is Australia's premier university, it's probably the best available. This is not to say that the school doesn't produce great artists.

While in Sydney you could also check out the National Art School, which is excellent in many areas, especially Art History. It has a far stronger practical emphasis than the other university level art courses here. Ashton's is the best for technical painting and drawing skills, but is a private school and doesn't offer formal degrees.
