Calle:
Thanks. Of course there is thought behind these. I'm to tired at the moment, but tomorrow I will write down what these are for, and what I already learned through them.

Had a bad day today. A quick and dirty anatomy study while hearing some really cool songs from trail of dead:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/cuntsonmtv.jhpg
I'm not satisfied at all but gotta sleep now.

And another colorstudy:

cool shit man! the color studies are interesting, i was wondering if you are just randomly throwing pallettes together or going from a book or what. thanks, cool stuff once again.

Zaknafain
November 1st, 2005, 07:16 AM
Thanks for replying flaptraps.

Time to explain my color studies I guess.
The aim of my colorstudies is to learn how to use hue, saturation, value, texture and composition to achieve a certain mood or to make a special color "sing". It's not out of a book, its a training straight out of my head. The reason why I'm doing this is because Color (including hue, saturation and value) and texture and composition decide over the feeling of a painting.
Basically I start with a feeling and a color and then I try to get both into the painting. The first colorstudy I postet for example started with the Idea of having a warm and friendly blue (it was kinda difficult).

Today I was really inspired by this thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55170
Justin Sweet is the best illustrator ever!

So I tried to work on my brushwork to achieve the same looseness he has in his paintings.
10 minutes? a bit more perhaps. Still have to pratice that a lot.
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/blood.jpg
I also worked on the anatomy study, but it looks like crap so I'm not going to post it until its fixed.

krakel
November 1st, 2005, 08:27 AM
very nice indeed.. Id say you should concentrate more on the upper region (hair, arms for example) on that anatomy study.. otherways it looks fine to me.. keep doing those little studies though theyre sick

Again a crappy update. I hate those days :nohope:

Anyway here it is:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/crappy2.jpg
Another color/mood study, this time with a little bit of landscape study in it.

krakel:
Thanks for the crits. Your right. I already painted the face hair and the arms and I'm going to post the updated version soon. (probably ;) )

Calle:
Yop, thats basically what I'm doing. I learned quite a lot and its really fun figuring this stuff out. Additionally its a good warmup.

Edit: DAmn! I just noticed that the backround color of CA kills all the luminescent colors. \w/ Gotta add a frame...

Good stuff here too, funny how there is so much depth and things happening in the last one even though it is only b/w textures. It becomes interesting nevertheless. Shows me that it doesn´t necessarily have to be interpretable to readable. :D

I likes the punkposter! Nice setting, good colors and good design all around.

Cheers to Stuttgart!!!

oh and thanks for the replys!
Thx Hiipi your comment made me happy. I have to do those b/w texture studys again. Those were inspired by androids art btw. His art showed me that realism (or "representational elements" if this makes sense) isn't everything (although its one of the most important elements).
Skethin "D": I will post an updated version soon. (Only have to update it :frustrated: )

November 3rd, 2005, 01:01 PM
Really nice stuff here, are the color studies painted in photoshop? I'd be really interested to get a look at your process. If the girl in #12 is a "quick" study, then I'm definitely doing something wrong...spending hours and days on a painting and not getting anywhere near that kind of result.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

wow, du hast voll hammer brush strokes, kannst du mir verraten wie man dieses relativ fette beim painting hinbekommt? =)

November 5th, 2005, 04:34 PM
Panda: Danke, ich erklärs gleich auf Englisch wenns dich net stört. (sonst kann ichs auch noch auf Deutsch abtippen, aber vielleicht wollns mehr leute wissn).
max: No it's painter. I will post a progress soon.

Sorry for not updating that much. I'm drawing a lot lately and I don't have a scanner.
20 minutes speedpaint:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/ngona.jpg

I was asked twice about brushwork and brushstrokes so I will write down some of my thoughts:

- Brusheconomy: Paint with big brushes and try to have only usefull brushstrokes. A quote from Whitaker:
"A pretty good brush rule of thumb is to find the largest brush for the job, and then put it aside and use an even larger brush."
How many strokes do you need to paint an arm? 15? 50? 100?
Good brush economy will help you to keep your planes free and simple and it will increase your painting speed a lot.

- Form and Volume: Brushes should follow the form in order to make your image look more 3d. This can be practiced the best with rake brushes.

- Simplify: This does not only mean to concentrate on the big shapes and planes, also to keep them as simply as possible. Know how to use blenders. A common mistake is to blend everything.

Feel free to discuss if you don't agree with me :pirate:

krakel

As I said.. like those colorstudies.. although the second and third one are kind of a mistery to me.. That cityscape experiment is interesting too i think you should have some value difference in the tiny gaps between the windows though.. In my opinion they seem too solid.. tooo.. black.. I dunno. keeps it up!

The last one is a mood study. I'm currently fascinated by the urban "alone in the streets at night" mood. It's a strange feeling because it's neither negative nor positive but can still be really intense.
Well I will need to work even more on creating this feeling.

I really like all this. I can't say for sure because I don't know you, heh, but you appear to be very good at producing specific feelings with your work. That's a very good thing. Being good at drawing is one thing, but knowingly evoking emotions in your audience is the sign of a master.

it'd be nice to see one developed into a full illustration.
Keep up the life drawing and do some more technical anatomy studies- your photo ref figures lack structure and confidence.

Hey... Nice to see some more abstract artists here at CA. I really enjoy your color thumbs... I'd like to see them expanded into full pieces... but it would be really hard to keep the spontanaety and the simplistic quality you have on a larger scale... I suggest that you try it though, some of that stuff could go for good money at galleries if you marketed yourself well...

damn you're ripping it up in this sketchbook! As far as colour is concerened anyway, it would be cool to see some more life drawings from you.

I really like those pen portraits you did as well.

Just curious about the Black and white pic you have been working on. The shirt has stayed black the entire time while you've begun to give the face light sources. The hair also doesn't reflect the light sources you've put in. Nonetheless, it looks great!

Your colour tests and abstracts are great as well, I want to do some now! :)

Wegen Öl und Zeichnungen: Hab leider keinen eigenen scanner und der auf den ich ab und zu zugreifn kann der hat leider nen defekt und is zusätzlich zu klein für alles größer als a4 (also auch für alle öl sachn). So.. Im extremely impressed by the paintings of your friends! I dont really like the desaturated versions of them... But thats personal preference I guess- sky_002.jpg is very nice as well- Do you work with the color picker thing at all? Your colors are always so intense..

Concerning the SP.. I think you should rework the head and your right arm- push the lighting for example- right now it weakens the strong rest of the image.

keep working with hogarth...

Zaknafain
April 30th, 2006, 11:32 AM
krakel: thanks for the crits. I don't like the desaturated version at all but I blame it on the fact that I ran out of time. I can see why you don't like the arm but concerning the face, I'm pretty happy with it. I think to much contrast in the face would weaken the mood. Besides if theres only one face in a picture, theres no need for high contrast because it will always be one of the biggest focal areas. Anyway, I will take myself some time with this painting again.
Colorpicker: Yes I use it a lot. But only on my own images never on the refferences and never in places where the colors are important. The reasons for this are:
- photos have really boring colors compared with a painting (Jason Manley talks a lot about this in some of his color theory threads).
- I never use 100% opacity brushes and therefore I would always achieve a different color from the one I picked (which kills all subtle colors).

What was the idea behind the double-lines? It seems to work with the knee but especially on the first one, where the lines are parallel to each other it looks odd..

May 8th, 2006, 04:10 AM
Sorry I don't update that often the last few days. I'm having problems with my scanner yet again.
Matt: You are right, ink over pencil. I will look for the name of the inkpen soon. It was a pentell pen I think. And yes, there are complimentary colors in the last piece. ( Shame on you :D )
Zulle: thanks
krakel: You are right about the horizon. I was to lazy to care about it. And the double lines: If I draw every line twice, It makes the whole inking process more deliberate. It forces me to think about every line twice. Now that I see it, it looks really odd. But this was mostly for my personal learning experience, so...

Anyone noticed that I have problems with drapery? :D I will work on that soon.

Zaknafain
May 8th, 2006, 04:23 AM
Ha! found some art to post.
I'm trying to implement my colorstudies into my Illustration workflow. Heres the one for the last piece. I tried to have a wide range of skintones and of skin temperature. I also tried to get the right colors to make it feel like a rockconcert. You can see that both complimentaries are equal in the colorstudy (thats NOT good). In the final illustration there will be a lot more red and the green/cyan will be mostly dark.
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/paletter.jpg
After I did this one, I used painters "new color set from image" feature and sorted the colors "HLS". This way its easier to make sure you are painting with temperature and not only value.
And yes, the last one has no composition. But since I was going to use it as a palette, I didn't care.
In the end, the palette worked, but not the way I thought it would look like. Anyway, I learned a lot about temperature during this painting. I just have to learn to think about my values while making the palette.

Zaknafain

I will not stop updating because of lazyness. I promise. Sad thing is that my scanner died and I won't post sketches or oils for some time.
Anyway, new art:

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/235.jpg

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/236.jpg

It was one big colorstudy that sucked but it had nice areas so I made those three details out of it. Odd compositions, but I had fun finding shots that were different from the casual compositions.
It was a really odd painting process (and when I say odd, I mean REALLY odd), therefore the pixel problems and the blur.

colorstudy. I'm going to explain this one so you can better understandy why I'm doing these.
The topic of this study was optical colormixing. I discovered that the impressionists (for example monet) and some digital artists (especially craig mullins) paint with colors you can't lay down directly because they consist of many colors that mix optical. (but only to a certain degree)
example: http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=18626
this is quite new to me and I'm very interested in this subject. I'm calling those colors "complex colors"
here is the study:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/erhe.jpg
I don't like the overall feel of it (to many competing colors) but it has some nice areas.

another experiment about this topic:
complex color
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/wa1.gif
normal color (i just blended the first one)
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/wa2.gif

you get intersting colors when you mix complementaries that way.

Ho ho! Brother, you're really speaking my language on this last one!

Actually... come to think of it; looking through your sketchbook - your striking a similar tone with my thoughts mate. I Really appreciate the bold exploration and experiments I see in here. I think perhaps you love "light" and it's interaction with the world as much as I do hmm?

I think... we need to talk mate! Share info yeah? Cheers!

Zulle & Matt: thx, here is it.
not a good update today...
I was busy with fucking bureaucracy and the lms thunderdome piece. (Oh my god... I SUCK)

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/fhs_005.jpg

horse study from reference. (I tried to paint it with a simple and limited palette. It somewhat worked)
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/horse.jpg

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/abc2.jpg

two studies for my thunderdome piece. I had an interesting talk with adraude about references and unreferenced work (and how it effects the creative process). I will do my thunderdome without any direct reference now.
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/abc4.jpg
full resolution:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/abc3.jpg
the second study:

I hope I find more time to update now. Fucking bureaucrats. Fucking timestealing events.

Really nice as always!
Do you have any high res of any of your abstract pics? the one you're doing are what i'm looking for as a background, simple but effective =)
Anyway, keep posting, your stuff is great !

krakel

July 7th, 2006, 05:41 PM
recursive end: thanks... how about that: you send me a pm with the name of the images you want and I look what I can find.
krakel: danke man... we have to get the whole ssg to matts update speed.

stuff:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/asdf.jpg
study about black

some drawings. Made them late at night (early in the morning?) when I was really tired. I figured out that this is a great time to draw. You just let yourself go with the flow of the drawing. And you get 100 ideas at once. Sleep is overrated. I will push this experiment farther. I like nearly all of the drawings I did that night.

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/sotired.jpg

http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/funny...dontknowwhy.jpg
the next one is the worst:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/blackeye.jpg

a thumbnail for a comissioned placard. I like the idea quite a bit though there are some minor problems I have to fix when this gets painted (or if this gets painted. Difficult clients :D ).
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/thumb.jpg

so the next stuff is dedicated to idiot apathy... Some links and stuff I want to discuss with someone who has a potent color knowledge. I am at the moment waiting for him to go online. It's already late. But then again: sleep is overrated.
Anyway: here it is... this happend when I wanted to shut down windows with painter still open. The backround gets desaturated and a few seconds later the color wheel looks like that:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/strange.JPG
now it is not really special when windows is producing strange things, but this made me think: yellow and cyan are really bright while the hues between blue and red get really dark. This is what I always felt when looking at this colorwheel. Additional this is exactly what Ron Lemens Colorwheel looks like (valuewise of course)
So I experimented a bit. White on a yellow or cyan underpainting looks a lot brighter than white on a blue or purple underpainting. I discovered even more but the post is already to long. Interesting. Now sentences like:
- purple can substitute black
- yellow can feel brighter than white
make sense. Until now I thought it was just some esoteric artist babbling. I really want to find out more about this subject.
now the link: http://www.burdicklyon.com/
great artists. Have a look at their colors: Light is yellow, shadow is purple. I always liked the mood they achieve in their paintings. Now I begin to understand what makes it so powerfull.

No more words from me for today. Idiot_apathy isn't online so I have to wait until tomorrow.

MattGamer
July 7th, 2006, 10:30 PM
yeay i feast on your updates! haha

love that talk about the colors. i really want to use colors like that and make it so that yellow is so bright and purple is blackest of blacks.

i read up on that stuff you gave me links on - i remember going to IdiotApathy's thread and doing stuff there. i like it a lot! :D

i love it when the night goes on and you cant stop getting awesome ideas. more more! haha

I am working on my lmstd piece. I hate it. I had a big composition about it and just lost interest and now its super simple and a big piece of shit. I'm a bad illustrator.
I hope I can update tomorrow with some stuff. Some colorexperiments are coming as well.

Idiot: thanks mate... I have something to discuss with you about colortheory... I'm sure you can help with it...
oddo: more traditional stuff is coming soon...

and here some newerstuff:
I was challenged to paint without ref, and here is my portrait of a guy I saw in a bus out of memory (man that was fun!)

good lord zak, you kick so much ass with colour already... i really have to catch up. thanks a bunch for your heart-warming words regarding the ideas. as i said, when we met, unwind your head, just dare to do.. i know you got it in you. but dont worry, i think it is something we have to learn, just as we have to learn to paint... its like talking in front of a crowd, to pint that inner thing, what gets you up and all...

take a step back, the less you care about the painting in reflection with your personal ego, the better your message might become... and ideas, heck, take a dump, they fly around, read the news... they are there, you just have to give it some eye-candy... haha...

man i have to do paintstudies, you're right. rock on my friend.

Hrmmmmmm? Color Theory shtuff?

Something I want you to try out too, I can never tell anymore but if you paint in PS try painting in LAB mode and tell me what you think of how it 'blends' paint.

Nice update, non-ref pic turned out great. You feel you learned some good things from having to think about it, conjure it up?

nice face on the first one- the torso looks a little odd though- a bit monochromous (i dont even know if thats a word) and i like "another crappy one" too! you really have to work on feet and how to root your characters in space if you know what i mean..

blog: haha my german isnt much better than yours... ;)
adraude: thanks man... your right... having other look through my (real live) sketchbook (and seeing all those bad ideas) feels a lot like talking in front of a crowd. Funny that you are mentioning news as inspiration... I often get ideas while reading them. Just having problems to paint them right now.
asoir: stars... oh well :confident
Idiot: I promise you to write my thoughts down soon. Tried that LAB things on those paintings and it did some nice things. soon... (why am I so busy?)
mattgamer: thx... but got a new page now anyway...
tigermilk: advice? Don't start with the default round brush... Take something more direct. the default round brush is the worst brush for beginners coming from traditional media (corel painter would be better for that anyway).
soja: danke man... halt einfach die Augen offen während du durch die Welt läufst... fast alles was ich über farbe weiss habe ich draussen gelernt...
Abstrakt zu arbeiten ist auch ein guter Einstieg in Farbe.
krakel: as always, your crits hit the mark. thanks for that.

wow great colour studies, the first one the bottom to fingers look almost real. the second one isnt as strong, i dont think the foreshortening worked as you had hoped, maybe its just the first one is alot more interesting. You have been doing some great work in here, well done.

cool color studies. hmm... how did you get that red? did you cut someone (or animal) open and let the blood flow then put your hand by it? Huh!? yeah and the green one, i dont even want to know how you did that! haha

idle.

Dagnabit boy. I love those color studies. Lovely. Now just inject some of that stuff rumblin in yer head and I don't see any problem of you not being accepted here in Kassel (except maybe me asking myself why as was accepted, lol).
